El dúo de referencia en el panorama bass house se sienta ante nuestro micrófono en esta entrevista exclusiva
Llevan años en la cresta de la ola, y eso no es para nada cosa del azar. Su inconfundible sonido sigue fresco como el primer día, y su buena racha no parece que vaya a frenar. Samir y Diego siguen al pie del cañón defendiendo el bass house como pocos, y su fidelidad al género les ha convertido en uno de sus estandartes. Es por eso que teníamos muchas ganas de tenerlos con nosotros, para preguntarles cómo es su ritmo de vida durante la tour life, cómo han vivido la pandemia, su punto de vista sobre el futuro de la escena mundial y, cómo no, por su música.

WOLOLO SOUND: ¡Hola, chicos! Gracias Samir y Diego por tomaros un tiempo para responder a nuestras preguntas. Lo primero es lo primero: ¿qué tal estáis? ¿Cómo habéis lidiado con la cuarentena?
MOKSI: En primer lugar, ¡gracias por recibirnos! Estamos bien, esperamos que vosotros también. Aunque son tiempos locos, la cuarentena era la mejor oportunidad para trabajar en nueva música y otras cosas. Poder descansar más y tener más tiempo libre para pasar con tus seres queridos te da en cierto modo más inspiración, lo que realmente ayuda a encontrar ideas buenas y frescas en general.
WOLOLO SOUND: Hello guys! Thank you, Samir and Diego, for taking the time to answer our questions. First things first: how are you? How did you deal with quarantine?
MOKSI: First of all, thank you guys for having us! We are doing fine, hope you guys too. Even though these are crazy times, quarantine was the best opportunity to work on some new music and other stuff. More rest and free time to spend with your loved ones really gives you more inspiration in a way, which really helps to come up with good and fresh ideas in general.
WS: Este escenario es nuevo para todos y parece que hay un aumento de nuevas formas de devolver los espectáculos a la gente. Twitch está en su apogeo, Instagram Live estaba casi saturado, pero fuisteis un paso más allá y pinchasteis un set en un show de drive-in en Alemania. ¿Cómo fue la experiencia?
M: Es tan taaan bueno estar de vuelta con el equipo, el show en el drive-in fue una locura y lo echábamos mucho de menos. Es genial ver que la escena está teniendo nuevas y creativas ideas para seguir haciendo lo que nos gusta. Pero para ser honestos, nada supera a los de verdad.
WS: This scenario is new for everybody, and seems there’s a rise of new ways to bring shows back to people. Twitch is on its peak, Instagram Live was almost saturated, but you went one step further and played a set at a Drive Inn show in Germany. How was the experience?
M: So soooo good to be back on the road with the team, the drive-in show was pretty sick and we missed it a lot! Cool to see that the scene is coming up with creative new ideas to keep doing what we love. But to be honest; nothing beats the real thing.
WS: Otra gran idea que comenzasteis fue ‘The Moksi Phone‘, donde los fans podían ponerse en contacto con vosotros a través de un número de teléfono, enviaros notas de voz para usarlas en vuestras canciones, recibir Facetimes o incluso nuevas canciones. ¿Cómo fue la respuesta a eso? ¿Os enfrentasteis a alguna situación incómoda o divertida mientras interactuabais con los fans?
M: Jaja, no, no hemos tenido ninguna situación incómoda todavía. Dondequiera que vayamos, tratamos de grabar notas de voz. A veces le pedimos a la gente que diga algo en su propio idioma o algo divertido en un club o en un after. Pero es brutal recibir tantas notas de voz de tus fans para que formen parte de una canción de Moksi. También vamos a incorporar este teléfono en futuros lanzamientos, y cuando estés en nuestra lista de WhatsApp, ¡significará que automáticamente serás el primero en escuchar los nuevos lanzamientos!
WS: Another great idea you started was ‘The Moksi Phone’, where fans could get in touch with you through a phone number, send you voicenotes to use them on your tracks, receive Facetimes from you, or even new tracks. How was the response to that? Did you face any awkward or funny situation while interacting with fans?
M: Haha, no we haven’t had any awkward situations yet. Everywhere we go we try to record voice memos. Sometimes we just ask people to say something cool in their own language or something funny at a club or an afterparty when they are turned af. But it’s so sick to receive so many dope voice memos from your fans, so they can be part of a Moksi song. We also gonna incorporate this phone in future releases, when you’re in our WhatsApp that automatically means you’re gonna hear first on new releases!
WS: ¿Cómo os sentís con el impacto de esta situación en vuestro trabajo? ¿Creéis que esto va a cambiar las cosas para siempre o es solo cuestión de tiempo que todo vuelva a ser como era hace meses?
M: Por supuesto que el impacto es enorme, hay muchísima gente involucrada en la industria de los eventos. Pero todas estas personas son muy creativas encontrando nuevas formas de entretenimiento. La industria del espectáculo en vivo ha pasado de ser un nicho a una práctica común en pocas semanas. Es increíble ver cómo evoluciona la escena.
WS: How do you feel about the impact of this situation on your job? Do you think this is going to change things forever or it’s just a matter of time that everything will get back to how it used to be months ago?
M: Of course the impact is huge, there are so many people involved in the event industry. But all of these people are very creative in finding new ways of entertaining. The live industry has moved from a niche to a common practice within weeks. Amazing to see how the scene is evolving.
WS: Mirando hacia atrás, habéis visitado España unas cuantas veces, principalmente para festivales y espectáculos en Ibiza durante el verano. ¿Cómo os sentís acerca de nuestro país, tanto como turistas como artistas?
M: Cada vez que vamos a España nos sentimos como si estuviéramos de vacaciones, buena comida, naturaleza increíble y gente guapa. La energía del público también es siempre real.
WS: Looking back, you’ve visited Spain a few times, mainly for festivals and Ibiza shows during summer. How do you feel about our country, both as tourists and artists?
M: Everytime we go to Spain it feels like a holiday, good food, amazing nature and beautiful people. The hype in the crowd is always real too.
WS: Dejando el virus atrás, hablemos de lo que es importante: la música. Estáis listos para lanzar algunas cosas durante el verano, comenzando con un EP en Barong Family. ¿Qué nos podéis decir sobre ello?
M: Este EP incluirá 4 canciones con un toque clásico de Moksi. Nuestros fans saben que nunca hacemos la misma canción dos veces, así que esperan un nuevo ángulo del conocido sonido Moksi. Grandes tambores, melodías raras, grandes build ups y nuevos sonidos originales.
WS: Leaving the virus behind, let’s talk about what’s important: music. You are ready to release few things during summer, starting with an EP on Barong Family. What can you tell us about it?
M: This EP will feature 4 songs with a classic Moksi touch. Our fans know we never make the same song twice so they expect a new angle to the known Moksi sound. Big drums, weird melodies, big build ups and original new sounds.
WS: Justo antes, habéis vuelto a vuestro sello con un nuevo EP. El sonido es diferente a lo que habéis mostrado en vuestro último lanzamiento en Barong. ¿Cuál fue la inspiración detrás de esos temas?
M: Vosotros ya sabéis esas raves ilegales de antes, donde la música dance era aún muy nueva y underground. Ahí es donde se inspira este EP. Baterías crudas, melodías nostálgicas y grandes voces. Si conocéis ‘Moby – Feeling So Real‘ entonces entenderéis al 100% de dónde viene este EP.
WS: Right before, you were back on your label with a brand-new EP. The sound is different from what you showed on your latest release on Barong. What was the inspiration behind those tracks?
M: You guys know those illegal raves from back in the days, where dance music was still very new and underground. That’s where this EP is inspired by. Raw drums, nostalgic melodies, and big vocals. If you know ‘Moby – Feeling So Real‘ then you’ll 100% understand where this EP is coming from.
WS: Hace como un año, os adentrasteis en una nueva aventura al comenzar vuestro propio sello Moksi Family. Dos preguntas: primero, ¿qué os hizo dar ese paso adelante y hacerlo? Segundo, con todos esos lanzamientos en vuestro catálogo, ¿cómo os sentís al respecto? ¿Estáis satisfechos hasta ahora o todavía estáis en el camino de llegar a la meta que teníais en mente cuando lo empezasteis?
M: Realmente queríamos crear una plataforma para los nuevos productores de house. Hoy en día hay muchos buenos productores y todos ellos se merecen estar en el punto de mira. Además de eso, es genial tener tu propio sello musical y otra familia de la que formar parte. Estamos súper contentos con todos los lanzamientos hasta ahora y cada artista tiene su propio sonido identificativo, eso nos encanta. Hay mucho más por venir, ¡así que no perdáis de vista nuestro sello!
WS: About a year ago, you embraced a new adventure when starting your own label Moksi Family. Two questions: first, what made you take that step forward and do so? Second, with all those releases on your catalog, how do you feel about it? Are you satisfied so far or you’re still on the way to get to the goal you had in mind when you first started it?
M: We really wanted to create a platform for new house producers. You have so many good producers these days and they all deserve to be in the spotlight. Besides that – it’s dope to have your own music label and another family to be part of. We are super happy with all the releases so far and every artist has his own signature sound, we really love that. There is so much more to come so keep an eye on our label!
WS: Hablando de Moksi Family, el tema que dio inicio al sello fue ‘Good Idea‘, con el conocido productor de nuestro país, Slatin. ¿Cómo se produjo esta colaboración?
M: Llevábamos siguiendo a Slatin durante un tiempo y le conocimos durante el ADE. La cosa con Slatin es que realmente creó su propio estilo con sus sintetizadores modulares. Un diseño de sonido de locos, a veces un poco raro pero súper ghetto. Teníamos que trabajar con él. Estábamos contentos de que nos enviara la idea de ‘Good Idea‘. Inmediatamente supimos dónde llevar la canción. ¡Y estamos súper contentos con el resultado!
WS: Talking about Moksi Family, the track that kicked off the label was ‘Good Idea‘, with the well-known producer in our country, Slatin. How did this collaboration happen?
M: We followed Slatin for a while and we met him during ADE. The thing about Slatin is that he really created his own style with his modular synths. Crazy sound design sometimes a little bit weird but super ghetto. We just had to work with him. We were happy he sent us the idea for ‘Good Idea’. We instantly knew where to take the song. And we are super happy about the result!
WS: Por último pero no menos importante, sabemos que estáis acostumbrado a viajar por todo el mundo. ¿Hay alguna historia divertida que hayáis vivido que pueda describir lo loca que puede ser la vida nocturna para aquellos que no pueden vivir lo que vosotros vivís?
M: Las giras son como los deportes. Se trata de compensar el impacto del día anterior. Es súper intenso, pero con los ejercicios adecuados y la cantidad correcta de sueño es factible. La mejor parte de esto es la diversión que tienes con los amigos. Es el sueño de un niño el poder viajar y tener gente disfrutando de tu propia música. Es adictivo y no queremos que acabe nunca.
WS: Last but not least, we know you are used to touring up and down across the globe. Is there any funny story that you’ve lived that can describe how crazy can nightlife be for those who can’t live what you live?
M: Touring is like sports. It’s all about compensating the impact of the day before. It’s super intense, but with the right work-outs and the right amount of sleep its doable! The best part about it is the fun you have with friends. It’s a child’s dream to be able to travel and have people enjoying your own music. It’s addictive and we never want to stop it.
