¡Por fin! ‘On My Mind‘, la tan esperadísima colaboración de Hedex y Modestep, sale a la venta esta misma semana en el nuevo álbum de Hedex ‘From The Rave’. Hablamos con ambos artistas sobre su estilo, esta colaboración, el álbum de Hedex, el momento que atraviesan el dubstep y el drum and bass y mucho más. Dicha colaboración fue incluida en nuestro artículo “Las IDs más esperadas“. Veamos qué nos dicen sobre ello.

Wololo Sound: Lo primero de todo, gracias Jack, Josh and Pat por darnos algo de vuestro tiempo. Vuestra colaboración sale este miércoles en el nuevo álbum de Hedex ‘From The Rave’. Es un tema muy esperado, así que nos preguntamos… ¿Cómo surgió la idea de una colaboración y cómo fue producir ‘On My Mind‘?
Hedex: Conocí a Josh y Pat hace un par de años en un festival en Austria. Son unos tíos geniales, conectamos y sentíamos que éramos colegas desde hacía años. Un día les pregunté de la nada, para mi sorpresa dijeron que sí y quedamos en su estudio de Wembley para escribir el tema en un día.
Modestep: Conocimos a Jack hace un par de años en un bolo. Siempre hemos sido fans de lo que estaba haciendo. A veces nos metemos en el estudio presionados por un sello o por el management, pero esta vez no fue así. Simplemente queríamos relajarnos y ver qué pasaba y ninguno de nosotros esperábamos que saliera algo tan potente.
Wololo Sound: First of all, thank you Jack, Josh and Pat for giving us some of your time. Your collab is coming out this Wednesday on Hedex’s new album ‘From The Rave’. It is a very long-awaited track, so we are wondering… How did the idea of a collab come up and how was the process of producing ‘On My Mind’?
Hedex: I met Josh and Pat a couple years ago at a festival in Austria, they are such cool guys, we clicked and it felt like we were boys for ages. I just randomly asked them one day, they said yes to my surprise and then we hang out in their Wembley studio and wrote the track in a day.
Modestep: We met jack a couple of years ago at a show, we’d always been fans of what he’d been doing. Sometimes we go into the studio with someone with pressure from management or a label to get a track done but there was none of that with this one, we just wanted to chill and see what happened and I don’t think any of us expected for this fire to come from it.
WS: ¿Es posible que, debido al éxito de ‘On My Mind‘, tengamos otra colaboración de Hedex y Modestep en el futuro? De ser así, ¿será dubstep o drum and bass?
Hedex: Sí, por supuesto. Hay una segunda colaboración que saldrá en 2020, confirmado al 100%. En cuanto al género, tendréis que esperar para verlo…
WS: Is it possible that, due to the success of ‘On My Mind‘, we get another Modestep & Hedex collaboration in the future? If so, would it be dubstep or drum and bass?
Hedex: Yeah definitely. There is a second collaboration coming in 2020, 100% confirmed, you will have to wait and see…
WS: Jack, esta pregunta es para ti. En tu nuevo LP tienes a artistas como Window Kid, Bou, Turno, Skywalker and Captain Bass. ¿Otro artista que te habría gustado tener? ¿Cuál es tu colaboración favorita de todas estas?
Hedex: Creo que el álbum está terminado, ¡así que no sabría donde encajar algo o qué habria cambiado! Todas las colaboraciones salieron genial, así que agradezco a todo el que ha estado involucrado. Habría sigo genial hacer un tema de drill, ¡así que creo que para la siguiente!
WS: Jack, this questions is for you. In your new LP you have artists such as Window Kid, Bou, Turno, Skywalker and Captain Bass. Any other artist you would have loved to have? Which is your favourite collaboration out of those ones?
Hedex: I think the album was finished so I don’t know where I could of fit something or what I would of changed it for! All of the collab/features came out so well, so shout out to everyone involved. It would of been wicked to do a drill track I think so maybe next time!
WS: En el álbum podemos ver temas muy esperados, aparte de ‘On My Mind‘, como ‘Littleman‘ ¿Qué tema es el más antiguo? ¿Cuántos de ellos fueron producidos hace años?
Hedex: ‘Littleman’ fue creada para mi show de Rampage, así que es la más antigua. El tema con Roxi probablemente sería el siguiente, hicimos esa hace algún tiempo – ¡muchas de ellas son de 2019 o finales de 2018!
WS: In the album, we can see a lot of long-awaited tunes, apart from ‘On My Mind’, like ‘Littleman’’ Which track is the oldest one? How many of them were produced years ago?
Hedex: ‘Littleman’ was made for my Rampage show so that’s probably the oldest. The track with Roxi is probably the next one, we did that a while ago now – a lot of them are 2019 or late 2018 tracks!
WS: Aunque eres del Reino Unido te hiciste muy popular pinchando en Bélgica, al igual que otros artistas como Kanine, Upgrade o Simula.. ¿Por qué tenéis tanto éxito en la escena belga?
Hedex: La verdad que pinché allí por primera vez hace seis años y desde entonces me ha encantado el ambiente. Durante muchos años enfoqué mi sonido en lo que pasaba allí. Una vez llegué a pinchar siete semanas seguidas, supongo que tuve suerte – ¡quiero mucho a Bélgica!
WS: Although you are from the UK, you became really popular playing shows in Belgium, as some other artists like Kanine, Upgrade or Simula did. Why do you have so much success in the Belgian scene?
Hedex: I actually played there first I think six years ago and ever since I loved the vibe and for so many years focussed my sound on what was going on over there. I used to play there like seven weeks in a row at one time, I guess I just got lucky – I have so much love for Belgium!
WS: Produces y pinchas en tus sesiones sobre todo jump up, pero has empezado a pinchar más rollers, una gran cantidad de clásicos y, en general, más variedad de géneros. ¿Cómo ves esto?
Hedex: Creo que estaba llegando a un punto en el que mis sesiones eran 90% temas míos, así que no había mucho hueco para encajar otra música. Me di cuenta de que estos otros géneros no solo aportaban algo diferente a las sesiones sino que me daba un respiro entre tanta de mi música. Aparte, hay muuuucha buena música ahí fuera y mis fans siempre me han apoyado sin importar mi rumbo, así que siento que en los últimos años soy más libre en términos de lo que puedo pinchar.
WS: You mainly produce and play jump up in your sets, but you have started to play some rollers, a bigger amount of classics and, in general, more variety of genres. How do you perceive this?
Hedex: I think it was coming to a point where my shows were 90% my tracks so I never really had much room to fit in a lot of other music, I started to realise that these other genres not only bring something different to the shows but give a break in between so much music from myself. Plus, there is sooooo much good music out there and my fans have always supported what direction I go in so I feel in recent years a lot more free in terms of what I feel I can play.
WS: Esta es para Modestep. Desde ‘London Road’, vuestro último álbum en 2015, vuestro sonido ha evolucionado y ahora sois parte de la familia de Disciple. ¿Cómo ha sido esta evolución?
Modestep: Ha sido una enorme curva de aprendizaje. Los chicos de Disciple están a un nivel de científico en lo que a ingeniería de sonido se refiere. Los aspectos de diseño de sonido que estos tíos están creando se aleja mucho de lo que habíamos visto hasta ahora. Siento que hemos aprendido más sobre producción con estos tíos que en todos nuestros años produciendo juntos. Nuestro sonido se ha vuelto más refinado y se decanta más por la electrónica que por el cruce que teníamos antes. Aún mantenemos elementos de ese cruce, pero tan solo sentíamos que queríamos enseñar a la escena de la electrónica de lo que somos capaces, al mismo tiempo que mantenemos elementos vocales y musicales por los cuales siempre se nos ha conocido. Estoy muy orgulloso de donde hemos llegado y de cómo encajamos en esta escena.
WS: This one is for Modestep. Since ‘London Road’, your last album out in 2015, your sound has evolved and now you are part of the Disciple family. How has this evolution been?
Modestep: It’s been a huge learning curve. The kids over here at disciple are all on scientist levels of audio engineering, the aspects of sound design that these guys are creating is so far ahead of what we were experienced with before. I feel I’ve learnt more as a producer since working with these guys than all the years of producing combined. Our sound has become more refined and definitely falling more on the electronic side now and less crossover than it has been before. We still keep the crossover elements in, but we just felt we really wanted to show the electronic music scene what we were capable of, while still keeping the musical and vocal elements that we have always been known for. I’m very proud of where we’ve come and how we now fit in the scene itself.
WS: ¿Cómo veis la escena del dubstep a nivel mundial y en Europa ahora mismo? ¿Y de la escena drum and bass mundial? Especialmente en América, donde muchos promotores quieren hacerlo avanzar, pero parece que será una tarea difícil.
Hedex: El dubstep y el drum and bass son grandes en prácticamente todos los lugares en los que pincho. Pongo unos cuantos temas de dubstep y riddim en mis shows. Sobre América, no os puedo decir mucho pero a los DJs que me encuentro cuando estoy de gira les encanta el sonido drum and bass.
Modestep: Cuando comenzamos en el dubstep, Reino Unido y Europa lideraban la escena. América estaba intentando lo mismo durante muchos años, hasta que experimentamos un gran descenso en el dubstep mainstream más o menos en 2015. Desde entonces, creo que Estados Unidos ha sido la fuerza impulsora para traer al género de vuelta y ahora ,cuatro años después, es Estados Unidos el que está liderando la escena y lo está llevando de nuevo a Europa. Es algo genial para nosotros, como apasionados del género creemos que cualquier visibilidad es buena. El drum and bass siempre ha tenido su lugar, y se ha mantenido firme desde que soy niño. En Estados Unidos todavía necesita un giro para ser aceptado, y cuando ocurra, todo el mundo debería prepararse para que todo se convierta en algo más grande.
WS: How do you see the dubstep scene worldwide and in Europe right now? And what about the drum and bass scene worldwide? Specially in America, where a lot of producers want to push it forward but it looks like it’s going to be a tough job.
Hedex: Dubstep and drum and bass is big in pretty much all the locations I play. I play a couple tracks of dubstep/riddim in my shows I can’t say about America though but a lot of the DJs I meet on tour love the drum and bass sounds !
Modestep: When we started out in the dubstep scene, the UK and Europe was really dictating what the sound was. America was following suit for many years until we all saw a huge decline in any mainstream dubstep around 2015. Since then, I feel the US has been the driving force in bringing the genre back, and now 4 years down the line, its the US who is dictating the sound and it is bleeding back into Europe. It’s a great thing for us to see, as lovers of the genre we believe any exposure is good exposure. Drum and Bass has always had its place, and it has been steady since I was a kid. It’s still pretty tough over here in the states, I feel a huge shift has to happen for it to be accepted here, and when it does happen, everyone should be prepared for it to become something else.
WS: ¿Cómo calificaríais al dubstep que está saliendo últimamente? ¿Pensáis que hay muchos productores a los que les falta originalidad e innovación?
Hedex: Me encanta el nuevo estilo de dubstep que Svdden Death está haciendo. ¡El chico es una absoluta bestia!
Modestep: Como en cada género, hay un montón de gente que sigue modas, y el dubstep no es una excepción en este caso. Hay un montón de canciones que suenan igual, pero junto a ello se ha desarrollado una nueva ola con un sonido de diseño innovador. Todavía hay muchas personas que apoyan el sonido original de 2010, más de las que había en 2010, y la calidad de algunas producciones han alcanzado niveles que jamás se habrían previsto. Producir es más accesible que nunca, y con ello aparece mucha música nueva: buena y mala.
WS: How would you rate all of the dubstep coming out at the moment? Do you think that there are a lot of producers that lack freshness or innovation?
Hedex: I love the new style of dubstep that Svdden Death is doing. That guy is an absolute beast!
Modestep: As with any genre, there are tons of people who jump in on fads, and dubstep is no exception to that. There is lots of stuff that sounds the same, but with that has come a whole new wave of innovative sound design. There are tons of people still waving the flag for the original 2010 sound, more so than there was in 2010, and the quality of everyones productions have reached levels I could have never predicted. Producing is more accessible than ever, with that tons of new music; good and bad.
WS: De todos los productores con los que habéis colaborado, ¿cuál os ha ayudado más? ¿Cuál consideraríais más creativo?
Hedex: Yo sinceramente diría que la sesión con Josh y Pat. Ver a Josh escribir la intro en 15 minutos y poder volver a lo que éramos fue increíble.
Modestep: Tengo que decir que este honor se lo debo a dos productores. Tuve la oportunidad de trabajar con Culprate hace mucho, cuando estábamos trabajando en ‘London Road’, y realmente me inspiró para llevar nuestras producciones a otro nivel. Desde que me mudé a Los Ángeles, Virtual Riot también me ha inspirado para ver la producción de forma más libre y ha respondido a muchas preguntas que tenía en mi mente en cuanto a diseño de sonido y bajos. Ambos son verdaderos innovadores y genios creativos a su manera.
WS: Out of all the producers you have collaborated with, which one has helped you the most? Which one would you consider the most creative one?
Hedex: I would probably genuinely say the session with Josh and Pat. Watching Josh write that intro in 15 minutes and being what we actually used was pretty sick.
Modestep: I’d have to say that I owe two producers this honour. I got to work with Culprate for a long while when working on ‘London Road’ and he really inspired me to take our productions to a next step on that record. Since moving to LA, I’ve got to hang and work with Virtual Riot who has also inspired me to look at production in a much more free-thinking way and has answered a lot of questions I had in my mind in regards to sound and bass design. They are both absolute innovators and creative geniuses in their own right.
WS: ¿Cuáles son vuestros temas de dubstep y drum and bass favoritos ahora mismo? ¿Y vuestros favoritos fuera de la bass music?
Hedex: Ahora mismo hay una gran cantidad de productores tremendos, la verdad. Está este nuevo tema de Simula que es ID y que es la hostia, no te podría decir el nombre ahora mismo.
Modestep: Me encanta todo lo que está sacando Svdden Death, sobre todo su proyecto Voyd. Es raro que un artista de con el concepto adecuado hoy en día, y él ha dado justo en el clavo. Fuera de la bass music me está gustando mucho una banda de hardcore llamada Knocked Loose, tienen una intensidad inigualable por cualquiera de las bandas que he escuchado últimamente.
WS: Which are your favourite dubstep and drum and bass artists and tunes right now? And your favourite ones out of bass music?
Hedex: There are so many good producers right now to be honest, there’s this new Simula tune that is really fire I couldn’t tell the ID though.
Modestep: I’m loving everything Svdden Death is putting out, especially with his Voyd project. Its rare that artists get a concept right these days, and he’s hit the nail on the head. Outside of bass music I’m loving a harcore band called Knocked Loose, intensity that seems to be unmatched by any other bands I’ve listened to in recent times.
WS: ¿Habéis oído algo de la escena de drum and bass y dubstep en España o de sus artistas?
Hedex: La última vez que estuve en España para Dub Elements el público fue la leche, España siempre es la hostia la verdad – ¡público loco y gente encantadora!
Modestep: Desde que nos mudamos a Los Angeles hemos podido hacer nuestros primeros shows en Mexico y eso le ha abierto las puertas a muchos artistas españoles que no había visto antes. Vi por primera vez un set de Jessica Aiduffred el mes pasado y fue la hostia.
WS: Have you heard anything about the Spanish drum and bass or dubstep scene or about Spanish artists?
Hedex: Last time I was in Spain at Dub Elements the crowd was insane, Spain is always so fire if I’m honest – crazy crowds, lovely people!
Modestep: Since moving to LA I’ve got to do my first ever shows in Mexico and that opened the doors to a lot of Spanish artists I’d never seen before. I got to catch Jessica Audiffred’s set for the first time last month and that was straight fire.
