Wololo Sound entrevista a Kanine, uno de los artistas más en forma de la actualidad, en su paso por Sevilla para Dub Elements & Friends el pasado mes
Los fanáticos del drum and bass que lleváis mucho tiempo leyéndonos sabéis que en Wololo Sound somos muy devotos de Kanine desde hace bastante. Un artista que en los últimos años ha moldeado un sonido único y original, tomando todo tipo de influencias y con un ritmo y calidad de producciones espectacular. Se encuentra en un momento espectacular de su carrera y es, para muchos, el artista de moda en el drum and bass. Hace apenas un mes actuó por primera vez en Sevilla en la edición Open Air de Dub Elements & Friends, y no pudimos dejar pasar la oportunidad de hablar con uno de los artistas más en forma (si no el que más) de la escena de la bass music.
Wololo Sound: En primer lugar, gracias Fergus por concedernos algo de tu tiempo. Estás en un gran momento de tu carrera, con el apoyo de casi todos los DJs de drum and bass de la escena y lanzando un montón de música diferente y de calidad. ¿Te esperabas todo esto hace dos años? ¿Qué se siente?
Kanine: No, no me lo esperaba para nada. Solo quería divertirme y nunca planeé todo esto ni nada. La manera en que las cosas se han desarrollado durante los últimos años es porque he conocido a la gente adecuada, he tenido las oportunidades adecuadas y lo he sacado todo de ahí.
Wololo Sound: First of all, thank you Fergus for giving us some of your time. You are in a very big moment in your career, getting support from mostly every drum and bass DJ in the scene and releasing a lot of good and different music. Did you expect all of this two years ago? How does it feel?
Kanine: No, I did not it expect at all. I just wanted to have fun and never planned this much or anything. The way things have developped over the last few years is that I just met the right people, had the right opportunities and I just took it all from there.
WS: Eres considerado por muchos un artista de jump up. ¿Todavía te consideras un artista de jump up o solo uni de drum and bass que trabaja en diferentes géneros y coge influencias de diferentes sonidos?
Kanine: Creo que desde el principio nunca quise limitarme a un sonido o a un estilo. Me gusta mantener mi sonido para tener libertad creativa como artista pero aún así ser capaz de tener mi propio estilo o marca detrás de eso. Así que, aunque escuches cosas que hice hace años y que era en su mayoría jump up, todavía hacia drum and bass de todo tipo; por lo que siempre he sido así, y creo que seré así hasta el final, espero.
WS: You are considered by many people a jump up artist. Do you still consider yourself a jump up artist or just a drum and bass artist that works on different genres and take influences from different sounds?
Kanine: I think that from the start I never wanted to like limit myself to one sound or a style. I think I like to keep my sound so I can have creative freedom as an artist but still being able to have my own sound or brand behind that. So even if you listen to stuff I made years ago, although it was predominantly jump up I still made all types of drum and bass so I’ve always been like that and I think I will always be like that until the end, hopefully.
WS: ¿Cómo definirías la evolución de tu estilo desde hace tres años hasta ahora?
Kanine: ¡Esta es difícil! Pienso que eso viene con los años y la experiencia. Cuanto más tiempo paso como DJ, hago más tours y viajo, o pincho junto a otros productores, mi estilo evoluciona de forma natural y se refina. Así son las cosas.
WS: How would you define the evolution of your sound from three years ago until now?
Kanine: That’s a tough one! I think it just comes through the age and experience so that the more you DJ live, the more tour and travel, play alongside another producers my sound has naturally evolved and become more refined. That’s just the way it is.

WS: Hablemos de Distress Signal. K Motionz, Simula y tú empezasteis pinchando sobre todo en Bélgica y ahora estáis por toda Europa, e incluso Australia y Nueva Zelanda, juntos o separados. ¿Cuál piensas que es la clave de vuestro éxito?
Kanine: Creo que al final del día, lo que cuenta es que somos amigos, porque solíamos pinchar juntos un montón. Sobre todo cuando Bélgica era muy popular solíamos actuar juntos mucho, así que pasábamos fines de semana viajando juntos. Y nos hicimos muy buenos amigos, compartiendo música, ideas y eso. Por ello, tiene sentido que trabajemos juntos. Todo fue muy natural.
WS: Let’s talk about Distress Signal. K Motionz, Simula and you started playing mainly in Belgium events and now you are playing all over of Europe and even Australia and New Zealand, together or separately. What do you think that is the key of your success?
Kanine: I think that in the end of the day we are just friends, because we used to play together quite a lot. Especially when Belgium was really popular we used to play together a lot, so we spent weekends together travelling. And became really good friends, sharing music and sharing ideas and stuff, so it makes sense that we work together. The thing was very natural, it felt a very natural thing.
WS: Los tres empezasteis pinchando en Bélgica pero sois de Reino Unido. Hay muchos DJs británicos de jump up que se volvieron famosos teniendo bolos en Bélgica, como Hedex, Upgrade, vosotros mismos y muchos más. ¿Podrías explicar por qué pasa esto?
Kanine: En la escena belga de drum and bass, incluso para eventos o presupuestos pequeños, es un gran aliciente tener a un headliner inglés, de Reino Unido, en el evento e incluso si eres poco reconocido, especialmente en Reino Unido, los promotores te siguen trayendo. Así que para muchos jóvenes productores, es prácticamente sus primeros grandes shows y eso en Bélgica. Creo que ha cambiado mucho pero asi fue para nosotros.
WS: The three of you started playing in Belgium but you are from the UK. A lot of British jump up DJs became popular playing a lot of gigs in Belgium, such as Hedex, Upgrade, yourself and many more. Could you explain why this happens?
Kanine: In the Belgian drum and bass scene, even for small events or small budgets, it is a big deal to have an English headliner, an UK headliner, in the event so even if you are small and not that well recognized, especially in the UK, Belgian promoters keep bringing you out. So for a lot of young producers, it’s pretty their first big shows and stuff in Belgium. I think it has changed now but that’s how it was for us.
WS: Este año has lanzado muchísima música, sobre todo singles, y podemos ver en tus redes sociales que tienes mucha música en camino. ¿Es posible que tengamos un álbum de Kanine pronto?
Kanine: No puedo decir nada aún. Tengo muchos planes para muchas cosas diferentes. Tengo muchos singles y un nuevo proyecto que sale en un par de meses, así que quién sabe qué pasará el año que viene.
WS: This year you have been releasing a lot of music, mainly singles, and we can see in your media that you have a lot of new music in the works. Is it possible that we get a Kanine album soon?
Kanine: I can’t say anything yet. I’ve got a lot of plans for a lot of different stuff. I’ve got lots of singles and a new project coming out in a couple months, so who knows what will happen next year.
WS: ¿Cuáles son tus artistas y canciones favoritas de drum and bass ahora mismo? ¿Y fuera del drum and bass?
Kanine: Dentro del drum and bass te diría que mi artista favorito sería Dimension, como productor. Mi tema favorito ahora mismo… Estuve pensando sobre esto el otro día y no creo que pueda nombrarlo, hay mucha música ahora mismo. Sinceramente, me gusta todo lo que ha salido en los últimos meses, me encanta de una manera u otra.
WS: Which are your favourite drum and bass artists and tunes right now? And your favourite ones out of drum and bass?
Kanine: Within drum and bass I would say that my favourite artist would be Dimension, as a producer. Favourite track right now… I was thinking about this the other day, I don’t think I could name it, there is so much music right now. Honestly I like anything that has come out in the past few months, I’ve loved it one way or another.

WS: De todos los productores con los que has colaborado, ¿cuál te ha ayudado más? ¿A cuál considerarías más creativo?
Kanine: Diría que tanto Turno como Annix en el estudio, para mí, porque cuando empecé a hacer música eran a lo que quería aspirar. Así que estar con ellos en el estudio y en el mismo ambiente de trabajo me permitió aprender de ellos y creo que son geniales. Annix tiene un sonido muy único, al igual que Turno, y trabajar con ellos ha sido una experiencia verdaderamente gratificante.
WS: Out of all the producers you have collaborated with, which one has helped you the most? Which one would you consider the most creative one?
Kanine: I’d say both Turno and Annix in the studio, for me, because when I first started producing they were the thing that I was looking up to. So being in the studio and being in the same working environment allowed me to learn from them and I think they both are great. Annix has a very unique sound, and Turno as well, and working with them has been a really rewarding experience.
WS: ¿Has oído algo sobre la escena española de drum and bass o artistas españoles de aquí?
Kanine: De la escena española tan solo sé que todo el mundo ama España. Todos dicen que las fiestas de Dub Elements son la leche y creo que aquí la escena está creciendo tío, espero venir más en el futuro.
WS: Have you heard anything about the Spanish drum and bass scene or about Spanish drum and bass artists?
Kanine: From the Spanish scene I just know that everyone loves Spain. Everyone says that Dub Elements’ parties are wicked and I think there’s a growing scene man, I hope to come more in the future.
