WS: Sois de Ucrania, ¿cómo es la escena allí y cómo empezó vuestra afición por la música electrónica?
Woo York: Empezamos nuestro viaje hace mucho, cuando eramos estudiantes en la universidad de aviación y en los fines de semanas salíamos para ir a las raves. Sólo había un club en la ciudad que traía importantes artistas de electrónica, Cinema Club. Estos fueron nuestros tiempos más locos, éramos jóvenes maximalistas listos para abrir y explorar el nuevo mundo del sonido. Toda la música era más rápida esos días, en su mayoría era hard techno y shranz. Empezamos a experimentar con la creación de música en Ableton tan pronto como fuimos a nuestra primera rave. Viviendo en un hostel, estábamos sentados juntos intentando crear al menos unos cuantos sonidos, todo era por una cuestión de curiosidad, nunca pensamos que esto nos llevaría tan lejos, nunca. Actualmente la escena en Kiev está completamente a otro nivel a diferencia de como era antes, ha crecido mucho y sigue habiendo un gran potencial.
WS: You’re from Ukraine, how is the scene there and how do you start to be in contact with electronic music?
Woo York: We have started our journey back in the times when we were students in the aviation university and on the weekends we went out for the rave. There was only one club that was bringing proper electronic artists to the city, Cinema Club. These times were the most crazy for us, we were young maximalists ready to open and explore the new world of sound. All the music was way faster these days and it was mainly hard techno and shranz. We started experimenting with music creation in Ableton as soon as we got to our first rave. Living at one hostel we were sitting together trying to create at least some sounds, and all it was just a matter of curiosity, we never thought it will bring us that far, never. Nowadays the scene in Kiev is totally on a different level then it was before, it grew so much and there is still so big potential.
WS: Con vuestro nuevo álbum habéis querido mostrar diferentes facetas, ¿cómo ha sido el proceso de producción? ¿Qué habéis querido transmitir con él?
Woo York: ‘Chasing The Dream‘ es nuestro álbum debut, antes sólo habíamos estrenado Eps, los cuales en su mayoría estaban relacionados con la pista de baile, con composiciones de potentes beats. Ir de gira con nuestra actuación live e inventar algunas combinaciones interesantes con sonidos desconocidos nos ha llevado al punto en el que entendimos, que tenemos tantas ideas para la música que son tan diferente del 4 x 4 común, es por ello que decidimos crear una auténtica obra de arte con la que transmitir diferentes tonos, estados de ánimo y lo que nos ronda en la mente al oyente. Básicamente, casi todo el álbum fue grabado usando sonidos e ideas que fueron creados durante nuestras actuaciones live y en nuestras sesiones de estudio.
WS: You wanted to show diferent facets in your new album, how was the creaton process? What do you want to transmit with it?
Woo York: Chasing The Dream is our debut album, before we released only EPs, which in most cases were dancefloor friendly compositions with straight beats. Touring with our live performance and inventing some interesting undiscovered combinations of sounds while jamming brought us to the point when we understood, that we have so many ideas for music that is different then just a common 4×4 format that we decided to record it in a complete piece of art that will transmit various shades, moods and grooves from our mind to the listener. That’s how the idea of an album appeared. Basically almost all of the album was recorded using ideas and sounds that were invented during our live performances and studio jams.
WS: Sabemos que estáis ligados fuertemente a Afterlife, ¿cómo empezó vuestra relación con el sello y con Tale Of Us?
Woo York: Estábamos trabajando con Matteo y Karm mucho antes de que se creara Afterlife. Para resumir, como cinco o seis años un día despertamos y descubrimos que Tale Of Us pinchó varios temas nuestros en su actuación en Timewarp,nos pusimos en contacto con ellos, les enviamos un poco de música y la bola empezó a rodar… y desde ese momento nos convertimos en parte de la familia. Un equipo grande, profesional y apasionado que ahora está detrás de Afterlife.
WS: We know you have a strong relatonship with Afterlife, how did the label and Tale Of Us know about you?
Woo York: We were working with Matteo and Karm way before Afterlife was created. To make a long story short – back in the days, like 5 or 6 years ago one we woke up and found out that Tale of Us performed several our tracks at their set at Timewarp, we got in touch with them, sent some music and the ball started rolling…. and since that times we were part of the family. Big, professional and passionate crew that is now standing behind Afterlife.
WS: Habéis sacado música en grandes sellos como Afterlife, Dystopian, Life & Death, y ahora estrenaís álbum, ¿cuál es vuestro próximo objetivo?
Woo York: Integrar y reconfigurar varios sintetizadores nuevos para nuestro show en live y grabado cosas nuevas. Tenemos algunas nuevas ideas para temas bajo la manga que a veces hemos tocado en nuestros live sets, pero las dejamos para más tarde y cuando sea el momento las grabaremos y lanzaremos.

WS: You have released music in labels like Aferlife, Dystopian, Life & Death, and now you release your album, what is your next step?
Woo York: Integrate and reconfigure several new synthesisers to our live setup and record new compositions. We have some secret weapon tracks ideas which we already perform from time to time in our live sets, but we took them for later and as soon as it will be right time we will record and release it.
WS: Muchos sellos están apostando por el techno melódico, ¿pensáis que es un estilo que seguirá creciendo?
Woo York: Todo el tiempo que pasamos dentro de la música lo hacemos creandola, en vez de buscarla y no seguimos otros sellos, salvo con los que trabajamos, pero creemos que si eso pasa es bueno, y evolucionará todavía más
WS: A lot of labels are getting interested in melodic techno, do you think this style will keep on growing?
Woo York: All the time we spend on music we spend on actually creating it, rather then looking for it, we do not follow labels except those whom we work with, but we think that if it really happens it’s a good thing and hopefully it will evolve even more.
WS: Habéis estado varias veces en España, tanto en Barcelona como en Ibiza. ¿Cómo ha sido vuestra experiencia en nuestro país?
Woo York: Lo primero, Barcelona es una de nuestras ciudades favoritas del mundo y siempre es un placer estar allí, ya sea por vacaciones o por un show, pero por lo seguro hay un evento allí por el cual esperamos este año, el evento de Afterlife en la Off Week de Sonar. Has visto ese cartel? Es una locura. Ibiza también es genial, pero nos gustaría descubrir más, explorar preciosos lugares, visitar algunos lugares de interés histórico, etc., porque siempre que venimos es solo por una noche y no tenemos la oportunidad de disfrutarlo tanto como podríamos.
WS: You have been a few tmes in Spain, especially Barcelona and Ibiza. How has been the experience in our country?
Woo York: First thing – Barcelona is one of our favorite cities in the world and it’s always a big pleasure to be there, regardless if it’s a gig or a vacation, but for sure there is one event there which we wait so much every year and it’s defenetly Afterlife Sonar-Off. Have you seen this lineup? It’s just crazy. Ibiza is great as well, but we would love to discover it more, explore beautful places of power, visit some historical sights etc, because we always come just for one night there and have no chance to enjoy it as much as we could.
WS: Este año os estrenáis en Hï Ibiza en la residencia de Afterlife tras haber estado el verano pasado en Privilege, ¿cómo fue la experiencia el verano pasado? ¿Qué pensáis de este cambio a Hï Ibiza?
Woo York: La noche de Privilege fue increíble para nosotros, nos encantó el ambiente y la sala, especialmente por la mañana cuando sale el sol y ves ese panorama en la increíble isla, esperamos poder repetir algún día. ¿Qué podemos decir sobre Hï? Sabemos varias cosas…Es el lugar que se ha ‘construido’ en lugar del legendario Space, tuvimos la oportunidad de abrir la temporada de Afterlife hace dos años. Sabemos que hay gente detrás de Hï que ha invertido mucho esfuerzo para hacerlo un lugar genial, además albergará eventos de Afterlife, lo que significa que será increíble.
WS: This year you are making your Hï Ibiza debut in the Aferlife residence, right afer your summer in Privilege last year, how was the experience there and what do you think about this change to Hï?
Woo York: Privilege night was amazing for us, we did love the vibe and the room especially in the morning when the sun comes up and you see this panorama on the amazing island, hope some day we will repeat it. What we can say about Hi? We know several things… It is a venue that is “build” on the place of legendary Space, which we had a privilege to open Afterlife season two years ago. We know that people behind Hi invested a lot of effort to make a new place really cool, moreover it will host Afterlife events, which mean that it will be amazing.
WS: Muchos artistas piensan que la magia de Ibiza ha ido disminuyendo, ¿que pensáis sobre esto?
Woo York: Ibiza es una isla preciosa, no sólo por los clubs y toda esa mierda sino por la naturaleza y las personas que viven ahí. No estamos seguros a que tipo de magia se refieren esas personas cuando dicen que algo está bajando, no podemos juzgar, nos encanta todo. No somos tan mayores y no tenemos muchas experiencia en el pasado para hacer algunas suposiciones o comparaciones de como antes era mejor
WS: A lot of artists think that the magic of Ibiza is going down, what do you think about this?
Woo York: Ibiza is beautiful island, it is reach not only because of it’s clubs and all this shit around but because of nature and people that live there. Not sure which kind of magic are those people referring when saying that something is going down, we cant judge, we love everything. We are not that old and do not have much experience in past to make some assumtions or comparisons how it was better before 🙂
