Impulsado por la diversidad, la amistad, las ideas progresivas y la música bass, Koven es un doble acto lleno de pasión y talento nato. Compuesto por Max Rowat y Katie Boyle, el dúo se formó en 2014. Conocidos por su sonido potente y melódico, principalmente canalizado en el drum & bass y el dubstep, con incursiones en una variedad de otros géneros, su sonido ha acumulado un gran número de seguidores en todo el mundo. Koven ha construido su reputación sobre los cimientos establecidos por años de duro trabajo, giras y colaboración para ganarse una reputación. Con Katie al frente de las apariciones públicas y Max como cerebro detrás de los ritmos, el dúo está preparado para pasar a la siguiente fase de su floreciente evolución. Tras un año idílico para el dúo británico, en Wololo Sound no podíamos perder la ocasión de sentarnos a hablar con ellos, sobre sus proyectos de este 2023 que está llegando a su fin y que viene por el horizonte, para lo que sin duda es uno de los dúos más icónicos ya del drum & bass melódico.
Wololo Sound: ¡Hola Koven! Muchas gracias por concedernos esta entrevista, ¡es un placer teneros con nosotros! En primer lugar, me gustaría preguntarte, ¿cómo estás? ¿En qué momento creativo os encontráis ahora mismo y tras el lanzamiento de ‘Never Have I Felt Like This’ VIP?
Koven – ¡Gracias por invitarnos! Estamos muy bien y creo que estamos en nuestro mejor momento creativo. Estamos atravesando una de esas rachas realmente positivas que son bastante raras para los artistas: trabajando en un montón de maquetas que nos encantan, sintiéndonos seguros de lo que estamos haciendo y entusiasmados por terminarlos y lanzarlos.
Wololo Sound: Hi Koven! Thank you very much for giving us this interview, it’s a pleasure! Firstly, I would like to ask, how are you? What creative moment are you in right now after the release of ‘Never Have I Felt Like This’ VIP?
Koven – Thanks for having us! We are really good and I think we might be in our most creative moment yet. We are going through one of those really positive patches that are quite rare for artists – sitting on loads of demos we love, feeling confident about what we’re making and excited to get it finished and released.
Wololo Sound: Os habéis convertido en uno de los grupos más icónicos del drum and bass, ¿cómo os sentís al respecto?
Koven – Muy amable por vuestra parte, es una locura pensar que pueda ser verdad. Parece un logro de locos. Cualquiera que haya seguido nuestra trayectoria, sabrá que no ha sido fácil, ni rápido, así que nuestros niveles de gratitud son altísimos.
Wololo Sound: You’ve become one of the most iconic groups in drum and bass right now, how do feel you about?
Koven – Thats very kind, It’s mad to think that could be true. It feels like such a crazy achievement. For anyone following our journey, you will know its not be a quick or easy one, so our gratitude levels are crazy high!
Wololo Sound: Si hay un elemento que caracteriza a un artista, son sus influencias musicales, pero ¿qué os ha influido más a vosotros, el dubstep o el drum and bass? ¿O tenéis una conexión diferente con ambos?
Koven – Sin duda tenemos una conexión diferente con ambos géneros, además de con muchos otros. Ambos estamos muy influenciados por géneros fuera de la música de baile – rock, indie, pop, folk-pop. Sin embargo, creo que actualmente el drum & bass ocupa nuestro corazón. Es un género que ambos amamos desde hace mucho tiempo y desde que nos hemos centrado más en el drum & bass nuestra carrera se ha impulsado tremendamente. No fue una decisión intencionada, simplemente nos dimos cuenta hace unos 5 años de que hacíamos y publicábamos música, pero mucha de ella no era apta para los clubes, por lo que no teníamos suficiente música propia para pinchar en nuestros sets, así que decidimos centrarnos en los 174 bpm, y sin duda dio sus frutos.
Wololo Sound: If there is one element that characterizes an artist, it is their musical influences, But what has influenced you the most – Dubstep or drum and bass? Or do you have a different connection to both?
Koven – Definitely have a different connection to both, along with so many other genres. We are both very heavily influence by genres outside of dance music – Rock, indie, pop, folk-pop. I think currently dnb has our heart though, its a genre we’ve both loved for a very long time and since moving our focus to be more predominantly dnb its done so much for furthering our careers. This wasn’t an intentional decision, we just realised around 5 years ago we were making and releasing music but a lot of it wasn’t club friendly so we didn’t have enough of our own music to play in our sets, so we decided to make a 174 bpm focus, and it paid off.
Wololo Sound: Nos gustaría pediros que os imaginarais que pudierais organizar un festival desde el principio, completamente a vuestro gusto… ¿Qué elementos consideras esenciales para el éxito de un festival? ¿Qué DJs incluirías al 100% en el cartel?
Koven – Ahh, esta pregunta es muy difícil. Supongo que tenemos que pensar en los sets que más nos han gustado en los últimos años o en la música de los que más nos gustan. En primer lugar, no sería un line-up todo drum & bass, tendríamos a Odesza 100%, Porter Robinson (aunque la última vez que lo vi tocar fue hace unos 8 años, así que imagino que sus sets han cambiado bastante). Camo & Krooked son siempre nuestros favoritos en los festivales cuando estamos en el cartel junto a ellos. Hace poco estuvimos de gira con ShockOne y Aktive (Aktive es el hermano de Katie), y fue muy divertido, así que sin duda los incluiríamos por su buen rollo y sus sets. Además de A.M.C por supuesto, su habilidad a los platos es inigualable.
Wololo Sound – We would like to ask you to imagine the choice of managing a festival, from the beginning, completely as you’d like… What elements do you consider essential for a successful festival? Which DJs would you 100% include on the line up?
Koven – Ahh this question is so hard – I guess we need to think back to what sets we’ve really loved one the last few years or who’s music we love. Firstly it wouldn’t be an all dnb line-up, we’d have Odesza on there 100%, Porter Robinson (although last time I saw him play was about 8 years ago so I imagine his sets have changed quite abit). Camo & Krooked are always a favourite to catch at festivals when we’re on the lineup along side them. We recently toured with ShockOne and Aktive (Aktive is Katie’s brother), and it was so much fun so would definitely add them on for the good vibes as well as banging sets. And A.M.C because his skill on the desk is just unmatched.
Wololo Sound: Habeis pasado estado muchos años tocando en España, sobre todo en Andalucía, Dub Elements, Bass Invasion o en Dreambeach. ¿Cómo fue vuestraexperiencia con el público español? ¿Sabías algo de Dreambeach antes de que os contrataran? Es un festival enorme.
Koven – ¡El público español es una locura! Cada vez que estamos allí tienen tanta energía…Especialmente en Dreambeach, tocábamos a las 5 de la mañana y allí seguían dándolo todo, fue una locura.
Wololo Sound: You’ve spent several years playing in Spain, mostly in Andalucía, at Dub Elements & Friends, Bass Invasion o Dreambeach festival. How was your experience with the Spanish crowd? Did you know something about Dreambeach before you were booked for it? It’s a huge festival!
Koven – Spanish crowds are insane!! Every time we are there they have so much energy. Dreambeach especially, when we were playing at 5am and they were still giving it everything – it was mad.
Wololo Sound: El drum and bass está en auge sin duda, y en el Reino Unido es como una religión, mientras tanto en España gana adeptos y en América empieza a asentarse cada vez más. ¿Qué creeis que hace la música drum and bass sea tan querida por los ravers? ¿Creeis que la comunidad drum and bass es diferente de las demás? ¿Creeis que el drum and bass se convertirá algún día en la corriente dominante?
Koven – Es una pregunta difícil. ¿Quizá las redes sociales tengan mucho que ver?… El drum and bass siempre ha tenido muchos seguidores en la escena underground, pero cada vez es más popular y atrae a más gente. Pero no lo vemos como algo malo.
Wololo Sound: Drum and bass is booming without a doubt, and in the UK it’s like a religion, meanwhile in Spain its gaining followers and in America it’s beginning to settle more and more. What do you think causes drum and bass music to be so beloved by ravers? Do you think the drum and bass community is different from others? Do you think drum and bass will become mainstream someday?
Koven – its a tough question, maybe social media has a big part to play in it? Drum and bass has always had a massive underground following but it is definitely becoming more mainstream and gaining more mass appeal. We don’t see this as a bad thing though!
Wololo Sound: ¿Cómo surgió la idea de la mezcla VIP de su clásico ‘Never Have I Felt Like This’?
Koven – En realidad empezó como una idea para la intro, porque es un tema épico, y estábamos intentando pensar en un tema nuevo para la intro de nuestros sets, ya que llevábamos tiempo usando el mismo. A Max se le ocurrió la idea de revisitar ‘Never have I felt this’ y creó algo tan genial que creímos qué debíamos lanzarlo.
Wololo Sound: Where did the VIP mix idea of your classic ‘Never Have I Felt Like This’ come about?
Koven – It actually started as an intro idea, because its such an epic track, and we were trying to think of a new track to have as our intro for ours sets as we’d been using the same one for while. Max came up with the idea of revisiting ‘Never have I felt this’ and he created something so cool we thought we should release this.
Wololo Sound: La gente sigue escuchando el ‘Never Have I Felt Like This’ original porque es un tema legendario, ¿qué hicisteis en particular para mejorar o cambiar la versión?
Koven – ¡Lo principal que hicimos fue darle un toque drum & bass! El bpm original rondaba los 160, así que lo cambiamos bastante. Además, nos centramos en esas cuerdas épicas para crear esa atmósfera.
Wololo Sound: People are still listening to the original ‘Never Have I Felt Like This’ because it’s such a legendary track, what did you do in particular to improve or change the rework?
Koven – The main thing we did was give it a dnb twist! The original bpm was around 160 so we changed it up quite a bit. As well as really honing in on those epic strings to create that release atmospheric build up.
