Wololo Sound entrevista a Sultan + Shepard

WOLOLO SOUND: ¡Hola Maurice!

Me va bien.

WOLOLO SOUND: Hello Maurice! Nice to have you here, thanks for spending some time with us. First things first: how are you? How’s life treating you lately?

OËSHA: Thanks for having me! I’m doing great. I’ve been focusing a lot on making music for my new project Oësha lately and I can say it’s going well. Everything is going great in my personal life as well! I have had a lovely girlfriend for over 2 years now and we have had a dog since earlier this year (we already had a cat). Best decision ever!

WS: Before we talk about your new artist project Oësha, we briefly like to address the huge change in your career over the last year. You’ve been part of the duo Magnificence since its beginning and now, after many years, you’ve decided to split and start a new solo project by yourself. What’s the main reason you guys decided to part ways?

O: We’ve created and published a 10-minute-long mini-documentary to answer most of the questions about the split and we had the chance to tell our story. But as you know, we started Magnificence 10 years ago based on our friendship. We experienced so many great things throughout the years, as we both developed ourselves as humans and creatives, we came to a point where we felt that we weren’t on the same page anymore. As we also experienced the downside of success firsthand, I wanted to choose for our friendship. My friendship with Robin is an important thing for me and I’m happy to say we are still best friends today. I support him 100% and I know he supports my new chapter as well.

WS: Enough melancholy for now. As we mentioned before, you are actually all alone with this new alias and we are really excited for what’s to come. For those who don’t know you yet, how would you describe Oësha?

O: Oësha is a project that I started a couple of years ago. I’ve always been a huge fan of the more melodic deeper side of house and that’s what I’ll be doing. Oësha is a project that I do for fun. That’s my main goal with this new project, to have fun and to create beautiful things that I like.

WS: You’ve just released your new single ‘Seminyak’ on Aly & Fila their Future Sound Of Egypt imprint. What is the inspiration behind the track and how did the relationship with FSOE happen?

O: I’ve been following Future Sound Of Egypt for a while and I love the music that they have released. My good friend Marcus Schossow from Gardenstate told me to send ‘Seminyak’ to them and that’s what I did.

Seminyak‘ is one of the first songs that I’ve started this year for my new project. I wanted a house, but also a progressive-orientated song that represents the sound that I’m going for with Oësha. I’m happy to release this one on Future Sound Of Egypt.

WS: Last summer you released your debut Oësha track called ‘Desire’ together with Almero. How do you feel about that track now it’s been out for a while? Are the upcoming releases following the same vibe?

O: ‘Desire’ is one of the first projects I’ve started as Oësha this year. Romain (Almero) grew to be a friend of mine and I’m happy that I could kick start this project together with him. Both ‘Desire’ and ‘Seminyak’ are quite good reflections of the creative direction I’m heading in the future, without limiting myself to one specific genre or vibe as I like to combine different influences. My upcoming releases have influences from multiple genres that I personally relate close to, like breakbeat, drum and bass, but also trance.

WS: The renowned Anjunabeats has been the first label you’ve trusted for this new chapter, with a release and a guest mix with them so far. Will this be a long-term relationship or shall we expect to see you in different places?

O: Well I do have releases at different labels right now, as I just released ‘Seminyak‘ on Future Sound Of Egypt. But Anjuna is an amazing label and I love what they do. I can’t tell too much about it right now, but let’s see what the future will bring 😉

WS: This melodic style you’re going for right now is more of an underground/club-based Progressive than the one we’ve seen you in before. This genre it’s been at its peak for the last few years, and we are wondering: what brought you to move from a festival and EDM-influenced Progressive to this new wave? What is inspiring you the most lately about it?

O: I’ve been playing this music already over the last 6 years at local underground parties, besides performing under the name of Magnificence, so for me, it doesn’t feel like I just made a switch. This genre is the closest to my heart and it just gives me the most pleasure while creating new songs at this moment in my career, and to me, that’s the single most important thing.

WS: Starting all over again means new everything. What’s the biggest challenge for you right now with this new alias? And what’s your dream goal to achieve with it?

O: Of course, it can be quite challenging heading down a new creative path by myself. There are new choices to make, finding my own new routine within this project as well as approaching new labels and artists to work with. My dream goal is actually quite simple. When I’m able to create the music that I love and when I’m able to create my own career, then I’m a happy guy.

And of course, I hope that people will connect to my new sound and follow me on my own journey.

WS: Since we’re looking at the future, what’s next? Can we expect more music and collaborations anytime soon?

O: I’ve just released my new single, ‘Seminyak‘, on Future Sound of Egypt their UV on the 5th of November. And I’m very happy how this is received and supported around the world. When looking into 2022, there is a lot of music finished and scheduled for release. There are around 9 new songs that I plan to release throughout 2022. Some of them are with some big artists, some are solo. The first ones are signed and scheduled, and some of them are in the process of finding the right home. But 2022 will be a year filled with new Oësha music.
