Una semana más volvemos con nuestra entrevista de los lunes. Esta vez nos centramos más en el panorama mainstream para hablar con GATTÜSO. El DJ y productor israelí es una de las caras más visibles de Ultra Records y en poco más de dos años ha logrado ser uno de los productores más a tener en cuenta con su sonido vibrante y alegre. Hemos tenido la oportunidad de hablar con él para que nos cuente más acerca de su carrera, como afronta los futuros proyectos que tiene en mente y alguna que otra curiosidad más personal, como por ejemplo cómo aprendió a hablar español de manera fluida. Una entrevista que nos sirve para conocer más una de las figuras más en auge del panorama mainstream y que seguro muchos de vosotros disfrutáis su alegre música.
WOLOLO SOUND: ¡Hola Reem! Es un placer tenerte por Wololo Sound y entrevistarte por primera vez para nuestro medio. Esperemos que sea la primera de muchas veces. Lo primero, ¡feliz año nuevo! Esperamos que este 2021 sea mejor para todos nosotros y el virus desaparezca poco a poco. Respecto a ti ¿qué tal te encuentras? ¿Cómo has afrontado la pandemia y qué esperas de este nuevo año a nivel musical?
GATTÜSO: Hola y mucha gracias por invitarme, es un placer estar aquí con ustedes. Feliz año a vosotros también y os deseo todo lo mejor, ¡ojalá que el virus desaparezca lo más rápido posible! Gracias a Dios estoy muy bien, feliz y con mucha fuerza y energía. Es obvio que este último año ha sido difícil para mí, ya que me entristecí cuando se cancelaron mis shows y eso me sentó mal. Pero poco a poco entendí que había que aceptar la situación y me centré en hacer mucha música nueva, que es lo que me hace más feliz. No he parado y va a salir una nueva canción cada mes, me alegro de que las cosas estén funcionando tan bien para mí.
WOLOLO SOUND: Hi Reem! It is our pleasure to have you in Wololo Sound and to interview you for the first time. Hope this is the first of many. First and foremost, happy new year! Let’s hope 2021 will be better for all of us and that the virus will slowly disappear. About you, how are you feeling? How did you face this pandemic and what do you expect from this new year musically?
GATTÜSO: Hello and thanks for having me, it is my pleasure to be here with you. Happy new year to you too and I wish you the best, let’s hope the virus disappears as soon as possible! Thank god I am fine, happy, and with a lot of strength and energy. It is obvious that this last year has been difficult for me, I got really sad when all my shows got canceled and I felt really bad. Despite that, I slowly understood that we had to accept the situation and I focused on making new music, which is what makes me happier. I haven’t stopped and there will be a new song every month, I am happy that things are working so well for me.
WS: Sabemos que hablas español de manera fluida. ¿Cómo aprendiste el idioma? ¿Te interesa mucho la cultura española y latina?
G: He vivido algunos años en partes de Latinoamérica, y por supuesto aprendí español. Además también viví en Madrid ya que soy un fanático del Real Madrid y esto me ayudó a aprender el idioma. Y por supuesto, me encanta toda la cultura española, ¡la comida sobre todo!
WS: We know that you speak a fluent Spanish. How did you learn the language? Are you interested in the Spanish/Latin culture?
G: I have lived for a few years in several parts form Latin America, and of course I learned Spanish. I also lived in Madrid since I’m a huge Real Madrid fan, and that helped me learn the language. And of course, I love all the Spanish culture, especially the food!
WS: Otra pregunta que es obligada es acerca de tu nombre, ya que, si se nombra a Gattuso, los amantes del fútbol lo asocian al legendario jugador italiano. Sabemos que tu nombre no hace referencia a esto. Entonces, ¿cómo surgió este nombre?
G: Esta es una pregunta que me hacen siempre. La verdad es que cuando estuve buscando un nombre artístico yo quería algo fuerte y potente. Entonces simplemente a mi mente llegó la palabra GATTÜSO y lo escogí, me gustó mucho como sonaba. No tiene ninguna relación con el legendario jugador del AC Milan.
WS: Another compulsory question to make is about your name, since anyone mentions Gattuso, football fans may associate it with the legendary Italian player. We know your name doesn’t come from there. So, how did you come up with it?
G: This is a question I always get asked. To be honest, when I was looking for an artistic name I wanted something strong and powerful. So simply the word GATTÜSO came to my mind and I chose it since I loved how it sounded. It has nothing to do with the legendary AC Milan player.
WS: Según tu perfil de Spotify, la quinta ciudad en la que tienes más oyentes es Madrid. ¿Recibes mucho apoyo en las redes sociales por parte de la comunidad española?
G: Pienso que la música es un idioma mundial, entonces puedo llegar a muchos lados con ella. Sé que mi remix a ‘Creep‘ junto a R3hab tuvo una gran acogida en España y les estoy muy agradecido por esto y por todo el amor que recibo por parte de mis fans españoles. También al ser muy hincha del Real Madrid, eso es un añadido que me vincula más a la ciudad.
WS: Your Spotify profile says that the fifth city your music has been listened in the most is Madrid. Do you receive a lot of support from social media from the Spanish community?
G: I think that music is a global language, so I can get to a lot of places with it. I know my ‘Creep‘ remix together with R3hab worked nicely in Spain and I’m really grateful for this and for all the love I receive from my Spanish fans. Also being a huge Real Madrid fan, it’s a bond that ties me closer to the city.
WS: Tu último tema ‘Bring That Back’, junto a Asketa & Nathan Chaim y Nadia Gattas, ha tenido muy buena acogida. El tema ya suma más de 500.000 reproducciones en Spotify a fecha de enero tras escasas 3 semanas desde su lanzamiento. ¿Esperabas tal acogida?
G: Yo siempre trato de hacer canciones que me vayan a gustar, y sobre todo que tengan buena vibra y un sonido moderno. Pienso que ‘Bring That Back’ cumple estas condiciones y es una canción muy alegre. Creo que es un tema muy divertido de cantar y gracias a Dios la gente piensa como yo, y por eso está teniendo un resultado tan bueno. Pero siempre pienso que hay cosas que se pueden hacer mejor y ya estoy centrado en mi siguiente canción. Tengo un excelente grupo humano que me acompaña y un sello que me apoya en todo. Eso más el trabajo duro son los causantes del éxito que estamos recogiendo, ¡pero solo quiero más y más!
WS: Your last track ‘Bring That Back’, together with Asketa & Nathan Chaim and Nadia Gattas, worked very well. The track has more than 500.00 plays on Spotify in January almost 3 weeks after its release. Did you expect this success?
G: I always try to make songs that I will like myself, and of course with good vibes and a modern sound. I think that ‘Bring That Back‘ accomplishes those conditions and it’s also a very happy song. I think it is a very fun track to sing and thank god people think the same way, and that’s why it’s having such a great result. But I always think that there are some things that can be improved and I’m already focused on the next song. I have an excellent human team that comes along with me and a label that supports me in everything. That, in addition to hard work, is the reason for the success we’re having, but I only want more and more!
WS: Una de las cosas que hace especial este tema es la manera que habéis tenido de hacerlo. Cada uno desde un país distinto (Estados Unidos, Rusia, Dinamarca y Bielorrusia si no nos equivocamos), y con reuniones a través de Zoom. ¿Nos puedes contar más acerca de esta experiencia?
G: Ha sido una canción muy difícil de terminar debido a la diferencia horaria entre todos los países y la dificultad de concretar una hora para reunirnos y trabajar, pero pienso todas las dificultades lo único que provocan es hacer más especial el resultado final. Personalmente no me gusta trabajar a través de Zoom porque no tienes el mismo sentimiento que si trabajas presencialmente con tus compañeros, pero es la manera en la que tuvimos que trabajar durante la pandemia y me acostumbré.
WS: One of the things that makes this track special is the way you made it. Each of you from a different country (United States, Russia, Denmark, and Belarus if we’re not wrong) and through Zoom meetings. Could you tell us how was this experience?
G: It has been a very hard song finish due to the time difference between countries and the difficulty to schedule some time to meet and work together, but I think that all the obstacles make the final result more special. Personally, I don’t like to work through Zoom since you don’t have the same feeling as if you do face to face with your colleagues, but is the way we had to work during the pandemic and I got used to it.
WS: Para quien no lo sepa, tu carrera empezó relativamente pronto. En 2018 sacaste tu primer single, ‘Who We Are?’, y actualmente tus canciones son éxitos en las plataformas. Además, en 2020 has llegado a colaborar con artistas de la talla de Laidback Luke y R3hab. ¿Cuál crees que es la razón para haber alcanzado todo esto en tan poco tiempo?
G: Lo primero de todo muchas gracias, siempre es bonito escuchar estas palabras. Realmente si te paras a pensar todo ha pasado muy rápido ya que empecé hace poco más de 2 años, pero creo que la clave para llegar hasta aquí ha sido mucho trabajo, mucha fuerza y una visión clara de donde quería estar pronto. He tenido la suerte de que mi música ha hecho buenos números de reproducciones y ha tenido mucho apoyo desde muy pronto, eso hizo que los artistas más grandes se fijaran en mí y ese trabajo me abrió las puertas a trabajar con ellos. Laidback Luke y R3hab son dos artistas muy grandes y estoy muy feliz de haber podido colaborar con ellos.
WS: For those who don’t know, your career began pretty soon. In 2018 you released your first single, ‘Who We Are?‘, and nowadays your songs are successful on all platforms. Also, in 2020 you got to collaborate with big artists such as Laidback Luke or R3hab. What do you think is the main reason to have achieved all this in such a short amount of time?
G: First, thank you very much, it is always nice to hear those words. If you think about it, it has indeed been all so fast since I started approximately two years ago, but I think the key to getting here has been a lot of work, a lot of strength, and a clear vision of where I wanted to be soon. I have been lucky enough that my music has made some great numbers in plays and has had a lot of great support really early, and that made bigger artists keep an eye on me and that work opened the doors to be able to work with them. Laidback Luke and R3hab are both very big artists and I am very happy to have collaborated with them.
WS: Llevas ya bastante tiempo junto a Ultra Music, un sello que apuesta por ese estilo EDM tuyo tan fresco. Muy agradable al oído y a la vez perfecto para clubs y festivales. ¿Es el mejor socio que podías tener para acompañarte en tu carrera musical?
G: Puedo decir claramente que Ultra Music era un sueño que tenía desde hace mucho tiempo, y cuando logré firmar con este sello fue como ¡wow! Me siento muy bien aquí y con muchas ganas de mostrar que es mi hogar musicalmente hablando. Quiero devolver a todos ellos la confianza que depositaron en mí y la ayuda que recibe mi proyecto día a día. Sé que en este mundo las cosas son muy dinámicas y nunca sabes que puede pasar mañana, pero lo que yo quiero es quedarme en Ultra Music y lograr el éxito con ellos.
WS: You’ve been involved with Ultra Music for some time already, a label that supports such a fresh EDM as yours. Not only pleasant to listen to but also perfect for clubs and festivals. Is it the best partner you could have to join you in your career?
G: I can clearly say that Ultra Music was a dream I had for a very long time, and when I got to sign with the label I was like “wow!”. I feel very good here and very motivated to show that it is my home musically speaking. I want to give back to all of them the trust they gave me and the support my project receives day after day. I know that in this world things are really dynamic and you never know what will happen tomorrow, but what I want is to stay in Ultra Music and be successful with them.
