Han sido varias veces las que hemos charlado con Sunnery James & Ryan Marciano a lo largo de la historia de Wololo Sound (puedes echar un ojo aquí y aquí). Los holandeses derrochan carisma y simpatía y nunca han dudado en compartir unos minutos de su ajetreada vida de artista para responder a nuestras preguntas o, simplemente, interesarse por nosotros en algún festival. En esta ocasión volvemos a entrevistarles, algunos años después, para saber cómo se desarrolla su carrera y su sello, especialmente en estos tiempos difíciles provocados por el COVID-19. En esta entrevista nos hablan de cómo les ha afectado esta situación, de sus últimas producciones, eventos y mucho más.

Wololo Sound: Para comenzar la entrevista nos gustaría haceros una pregunta obligada, dada la situación económica y sanitaria que estamos viviendo por culpa del COVID-19. ¿Cómo os ha afectado esta situación? ¿Habéis aprovechado el parón para encerraros en el estudio y hacer mucha música?
SJ&RM: Por supuesto que nos ha afectado. Y ha sido devastador para nuestra industria. Sin embargo, a nivel personal estamos muy agradecidos de haber podido pasar tanto tiempo con nuestras familias. Hemos estado viajando sin parar durante más de 10 años, así que para nosotros esta oportunidad es algo que recibimos con los brazos abiertos. A nivel profesional hemos pasado mucho tiempo en el estudio pero también trabajando duro con nuestro equipo para reconsiderar nuestro negocio.
Wololo Sound: To start off, we would like to ask you this mandatory question, due to the current financial and health crisis that we are living in because of COVID-19. How has it affected you? Have you used this time to get in the studio and make a lot of music?
SJ&RM: Of course it has affected us. And it has been devastating for our industry. However on a personal level we feel blessed we got to spend so much time with our families. We have been on the road for over 10 years non-stop so for us both getting this opportunity is a welcome thing. On a professional level we did spend a lot of time in the studio but also working hard with our team to rethink our business.
Wololo Sound: Hace apenas unas semanas lanzasteis vuestro último trabajo, ‘Life After You’, que ha sido apoyado por multitud de artistas internacionales de primer nivel. ¿Qué hay detrás de este tema? ¿Queríais lanzar un mensaje al mundo en medio de la situación que estamos viviendo?
SJ&RM: El tema no estaba refiriéndose necesariamente a la situación que vivimos ahora mismo, sino un mero mensaje de esperanza. No importa lo que pase, ¡cree en ti y ve a por ello! Simplemente hazlo, nada es imposible, como nos dicen las grandes marcas ?
Wololo Sound: Just a few weeks ago you released your latest track, ‘Life After You’, that has been supported by many first-level international artists. What’s the story behind this track? Did you want to send a message to the world because of the situation we are living in?
SJ&RM: The track wasn’t necessarily referring to the situation we are living in at the moment, but mere as a message of hope. No matter what happens, believe in yourself and go for it! Just do it or impossible is nothing as the big sporting brands are telling us ?
Wololo Sound: A principios de julio sorprendisteis al mundo con un show muy especial en el Johan Cruyff Arena, de la mano de Sensation, con una producción espectacular. ¿Qué supuso este ‘Monument Of Light’ para vosotros?
SJ&RM: Fue maravilloso hacer eso. El equipo creativo de Sensation produjo algo verdaderamente espectacular. Pero la idea tras este concepto era honrar a la gente que nos mantuvo a flote durante lo más difícil de la crisis del COVID-19. Y para aquellos que mantuvieron la fe y vieron la luz al final del tunel. Ese mensaje resonó en nosotros y con suerte la gente pudo ver eso en nuestra actuación.
Wololo Sound: At the beginning of July, you and Sensation surprised the whole world with a very special show at the Johan Cruyff Arena with a spectacular production. What did this ‘Monument of Light’ mean to you?
SJ&RM: That was so awesome to do. The creative team of Sensation really produced something spectacular. But the idea behind this concept was to honor the people that kept us afloat during the peak of the COVID-19 crisis. And for those who kept the faith and saw the light at the end of the tunnel. That message resonated with us and hopefully people could see that in our performance.
Wololo Sound: Otro de los grandes eventos de este verano ha sido Tomorrowland Around The World, donde tuvisteis la ocasión de actuar ante millones de personas de forma virtual. ¿Qué podéis contarnos de esta actuación? ¿Fue difícil para vosotros grabar algo así sin sentir el calor del público?
SJ&RM: ¿No parecía algo real? Nosotros pensamos que era incluso raro de lo real que parecía. Aunque la atmósfera fuera totalmente diferente para nosotros sin el público. Pero no nos podemos quejar porque todavía estamos ahí pinchando nuestra música… Fue muy divertido para los dos volver a los platos de nuevo.
Wololo Sound: Another big event this summer has been Tomorrowland Around The World, where you played virtually in front of an audience of more than a million people. What can you tell us about this show? Was it difficult for you to record something like this without the feeling of the crowd?
SJ&RM: Didn’t it really look like the real thing? We thought it was bizarre how real it looked. Although the atmosphere for us was completely different without the crowd. But we must not complain because we were still out there playing our tunes… Which was great fun being behind the decks again with the two of us.
Wololo Sound: Hablando de eventos, como sabréis, en España estamos viviendo una situación muy difícil, con el mayor número de afectados por COVID-19 en toda Europa, lo que hace muy complicado que vuelvan los eventos musicales a nuestro país. ¿Cómo veis la situación en Holanda? ¿Cuándo creéis que se podrá disfrutar de nuevo de eventos de música electrónica en vivo con grandes multitudes?
SJ&RM: Ojalá pudiéramos decirlo, pero al igual que vosotros no tenemos ni idea. Con suerte el año que viene será diferente. Y de ser así, seguramente veamos muchos festivales al aire libre y quizá más pequeños. No estoy seguro de si volveremos a ver 50.000 personas todas apretadas de nuevo. Lo esperamos, pero de momento…
Wololo Sound: Talking about events, as you might already know, we are living in a very difficult situation in Spain, with the biggest amount of infected people by COVID-19 in all of Europe, making it difficult for musical events to come back in our country. How do you see the situation in the Netherlands? When do you think that they will be able to enjoy big festivals with big crowds?
SJ&RM: We’d wish we could tell, but we are absolutely clueless just like you. Hopefully next year can be different. And if so, I think we shall see a lot more outdoor festivals but perhaps smaller. Not sure if we will see 50.000 people packed again. We hope so, but still…
Wololo Sound: En vuestros últimos lanzamientos habéis colaborado con artistas de la talla de Hardwell, Armin Van Buuren, Afrojack, Magnificence… ¿Con qué artista con el que no hayáis trabajado os gustaría colaborar?
SJ&RM: Tenemos demasiadas favoritas para elegir, pero ya que hemos estado mucho tiempo en el estudio os sorprenderá con qué otros artistas hemos trabajado hasta ahora.
Wololo Sound: In your last releases you have collaborated with artists like Hardwell, Armin Van Buuren, Afrojack, Magnificence… Any other artists that you haven’t worked with yet and would you like to collaborate with?
SJ&RM: We have way too many favorites to pick from, but since we’ve spent a lot of time in the studio you’ll be surprised what other artists we’ve worked with so far.
Wololo Sound: Y hablando de lanzamientos… ¿Qué nos podéis contar sobre lo que viene los próximos meses?
SJ&RM: Nuestro nuevo tema ‘Devotion‘ salió el 18 de septiembre y tenemos un remix para Oliver Heldens que saldrá en unas semanas. Pero algo que vale la pena mencionar es el nuevo lanzamiento de nuestro sello SONO: ‘Emergency‘ de Sofi Tukker con Novak YAX.X. ¡Estamos orgullosos de tenerlos en nuestro sello!
Wololo Sound: And talking about releases… Can you tell us something about what is to come within the next months?
SJ&RM: Our new track ‘Devotion‘ came out on September 18 and we have a remix for Oliver Heldens coming up in a few weeks. But also worth mentioning is the new release on our own label SONO: “Emergency” by Sofi Tukker with Novak YAX.X . So proud to have them on our label!
