Wololo Sound entrevista a Phace, uno de los mejores artistas de drum and bass de la última década y un completo estandarte en el sonido neurofunk
El nuevo sonido de drum and bass viene definido por una serie de artistas, veteranos y jóvenes, que no paran de fusionar estilos y tomar influencias de diferentes géneros. Phace es uno de ellos, creando una nueva oleada de sonido neurofunk, del que es ya veterano con más de diez años siendo uno de los artistas más destacados de este sonido de drum and bass. Hablamos con él sobre el drum and bass en la actualidad, el futuro de la industria, la influencia de Noisia en su carrera y muchísimo más. Os dejamos con la entrevista a Phace.
Wololo Sound: En primer lugar, gracias Florian por concedernos algo de tu tiempo. Has sido uno de los mayores nombres del neurofunk en la última década. ¿Cómo dirías que tu sonido ha evolucionado desde que empezaste a producir neurofunk hasta ahora?
Phace: Hola y gracias por recibirme. Personalmente nunca planeé o sentí que estaba haciendo neurofunk en su definición per se, sino que simplemente traté de cumplir con mi propia visión en el drum and bass con influencias de techno. Nunca quise limitarme, o debería decir a mi sonido, a un género o ‘caja’ en la que la gente mete la música. Para mí, lo más vital en la vida es cambiar y seguir adelante. Repetirse es lo más aburrido, así que espero que mi sonido haya progresado desde que empecé a producir, al menos así lo siento yo. En mi opinión, ha progresado tanto musicalmente como tecnológicamente, es un camino sin fin, ya que no existe la perfección para mí. La perfección es sólo un momento muy breve, luego cambia y progresa cada día 😀
Wololo Sound: First of all, thank you Florian for giving us some of your time. You have been one of the biggest names of neurofunk in these past decade. How would you say that your sound has evolved since you started neurofunk producing until now?
Phace: Hello there and thanks for having me. I personally never really planned or felt like I was doing neurofunk in its definition per se, but simply tried to fulfill my own vision on techy dnb. I never wanted to limit me, or should I say my sound, to a genre name or ‘box’ that people put music into. For me the most vital thing in life is change and to move on. Repeating yourself is the most boring thing to do, so I do hope my sound has progressed since I started to produce, at least it does feel like this to me. In my view it has progressed both musically but also technologically too, it’s a never-ending path, as there isn’t something like perfection in my life. Perfection is only a very brief moment, but then changes and progresses again every day 😀
WS: Algo que a mucha gente le encantaría saber: ¿de dónde suele venir tu inspiración a la hora de hacer música?
Phace: Me inspiro literalmente en cualquier cosa, arte en forma de música, libros, pinturas, fotografía o incluso arquitectura. Además, el cine y las artes visuales son una gran fuente de inspiración. O una historia realmente buena, unas vacaciones geniales o pasar un rato divertido con amigos o familia. Las emociones en sí mismas también pueden ser una gran fuente de inspiración, dejarte caer en una emoción y escribir música enfrentándote a ella puede dar lugar a cosas muy guays y auténticas.
WS: Something that many people would love to know: where does your inspiration usually come from at the time of making music?
Phace: I draw my inspiration literally from anything, other art in form of music, books, paintings, photography or even architecture. Also, film and visual arts are a great source for inspiration. Or a really good story, a cool holiday or some fun time spend with friends or family. Emotions itself can be great for inspiration too, letting yourself fall into an emotion and write music confronting it can result in very cool and authentic things.
WS: El drum and bass está experimentando una nueva ola de artistas en muchos subgéneros, pero especialmente en este sonido techstep/neurofunk. ¿Qué piensas de este sonido de nueva escuela y la adaptación de los productores veteranos al mismo?
Phace: Vivir en Hamburgo a veces te hace sentir un poco aislado de la escena, así que no sigo demasiado lo que pasa. Por supuesto, siempre estoy buscando música nueva e interesante para las discográficas, y me alegra ver que hay algunos jóvenes talentos muy prometedores por ahí, haciendo cosas interesantes. Me gusta cuando la gente rompe las reglas y hace su propia interpretación de la música sin comprometerse demasiado. Una idea buena es lo más importante para mí. A menudo escucho música que suena como si estuviera solo ejecutada técnicamente. Cosas así me aburren. Para mí la idea y el ambiente son factores más importantes.
WS: Drum and bass is experimenting a whole new wave of upcoming artists on many sub-genres, but especially in this techstep/neurofunk sound. What do you think about this new school sound and the adaptation of veteran producers to this sound?
Phace: Living in Hamburg sometimes does make you feel a little isolated from the scene, so I actually do not follow what is going on too much. Of course, I am always on the search for cool and interesting new music for the labels, and I am happy to see there are some very promising young talents out there doing cool shit. I like it when people break rules and do their own take on smth without compromising too much. A cool idea is the most important thing to me. Often I hear music that sounds solely technically executed, stuff like that bores me, to me def the idea and vibe is a more important factor.
WS: Tienes una impresionante carrera discográfica, con lanzamientos en OWSLA de Skrillex, mau5trap de deadmau5, Vision de Noisia y muchos otros grandes sellos como Critical Music o Neü, también conocido como Neosignal, tu sello junto a Misanthrop. ¿Cuál es tu próximo objetivo como productor?
Phace: Mi siguiente objetivo lo alcancé hace unos días lanzando mi nuevo EP de cuatro pistas en solitario ‘Caged‘ en Vision, el sello de Noisia. Conozco a los chicos de Noisia desde hace tiempo y son como una extensión holandesa de mi familia. Así que para mí fue algo genial y muy divertido, especialmente ahora que han decidido terminar pronto con el proyecto de Noisia. Siento como si hubiese cerrado un círculo.
WS: You have a very impressive label career, with releases on Skrillex’s OWSLA, deadmau5’s mau5trap, Vision by Noisia and many other great labels such as Critical Music or Neü, also known as Neosignal, your label alongside Misanthrop. What is your next goal as a producer?
Phace: My next goal I actually did reach a few days ago, releasing my new four-track solo EP ‘Caged’ on Noisia’s Vision recordings. I know the Noisia boys for quiet a while and they are like a Dutch extension of my family. So to me it was a really fun and cool thing to do, especially now as they decided to finish the Noisia project soon. It does feel like a closing of a circle to me.
WS: Durante tu carrera, has estado muy unido con Noisia, con muchas colaboraciones y lanzamientos juntos. ¿Cómo dirías que te han influenciado y qué piensas del legado que están dejando en la escena del bass?
Phace: Si colaboras con artistas, casi siempre deja una influencia o un efecto en tu propio trabajo. Siempre intercambiamos métodos de producción y consejos, pero también nos aseguramos de pasar un buen rato juntos cuando estábamos en el estudio escribiendo música. Es triste que decidieran dejar el proyecto, pero las cosas siempre terminan un día y estoy muy emocionado por ellos, por todas las cosas nuevas que les esperan.
WS: During your career, you and Noisia have been very united, with many collabs and releases together. How would you say that they have influenced you and what do you think about the legacy they are leaving for the bass music scene?
Phace: If you collaborate with artists it pretty much always leaves an influence or an effect on your own work. We always exchanged production methods and tips, but we also always made sure to have a really good time together when we were in the studio writing music. It’s sad that they decided to quit the project, but things always come to an end one day and I am very excited for them for all the new things that will lay ahead of them.
Phace: Tu último álbum ‘Between’ salió en 2018. Desde entonces, has publicado mucha música en forma de EPs y singles. ¿Tendremos un proyecto más grande de Phace pronto?
Phace: Podría decirse que este ‘CAGED’ EP en Vision es/fue un proyecto más grande para mí ? Siempre estoy trabajando en música, pero no he planeado por el momento escribir un nuevo LP completo. Aunque esto siempre puede cambiar cuando la inspiración llega.
WS: Your last album ‘Between’ came out in 2018. Since then, you have released a lot of music in the form of EPs and singles. Are we getting a bigger Phace project soon?
Phace: You can say that this CAGED EP on Vision is/was a bigger project for me ? I am always working on music, but I haven’t planned smth like writing a new full-length LP atm. This can always change though when inspiration strikes.
WS: Hablemos de estos últimos meses. ¿Cómo has sentido el impacto de COVID-19 en la industria y cómo crees que serán los próximos meses o años? No sólo en los eventos, sino también en los artistas. Y ahora que los eventos no son una opción, ¿cuál crees que es la clave para que los artistas mantengan sus beneficios?
Phace: Por supuesto que lo he sentido. Todos mis shows en directo se han ido al garete, la mayoría de mi red de negocios musicales, yo incluido, está sufriendo todas las consecuencias que el distanciamiento social ha traído consigo. Son tiempos difíciles, pero no soy una persona que se queja y entierra su cabeza en la arena, sino que trata de sacar lo mejor de ella y veo la crisis como una oportunidad para el cambio, sin importar lo difícil que parezca todo. Todavía no sé qué es lo correcto ahora, ya que es demasiado pronto para decirlo, pero estoy seguro de que el tiempo lo demostrará y mostrará cómo la industria musical lo resolverá todo. Veo a mucha gente empezando a hacer streams, lo que personalmente no me gusta tanto porque a menudo me parece que es como hacer zapping en la televisión. Lo que yo hice fue crear un perfil en Patreon para tener una conexión más estrecha con mis seguidores y fans e intercambiar música e ideas con ellos en esa plataforma. Ha sido muy divertido hasta ahora y me ayuda a pasar este tiempo. Pero junto con todas las cosas relacionadas con el negocio musical en este momento, lo más importante es controlar este estúpido virus para poder salvar a la mayor cantidad de gente posible… Una vida humana para mí vale más que cualquier cifra económica.
WS: Let’s talk about these last months. How have you felt the impact of COVID-19 in the industry and how do you think that next months or years will be? Not only on events, but also on artists. And now that events are not an option, what do you think is the key for artists to keep their profits?
Phace: Of course I have felt it. All my live shows have broken away, most of my musical business network, me included, is suffering from all the consequences social distancing has brought with it. It’s tough times, but I am not a personality that moans around and buries his head in sand, but tries to make the best out of it and I do see the crisis as a chance for change, however it may look like. I don’t really know yet what is the right thing to do atm, as it’s still too early to say, but I am sure time will show and reveal how the music industry will work it all out. I see many people starting streams, which I personally do not feel so much as it does often feel to me like zipping through TV. I personally started a Patreon profile to create a closer connecting to my supporters and fans and exchange music and ideas with them on that platform. It has been really fun so far and it does help me to get through this time. But next to all the music business related things right now, it imo is the most important thing to get this stupid virus under control so we can save as many people as possible…. A humans life to me is more worth as any economic figure.

WS: ¿Cuáles han sido tus lanzamientos y artistas favoritos últimamente y qué artistas has descubierto recientemente y te gustaría recomendar?
Phace: Los artistas que actualmente me están gustando son, por ejemplo, The Caracal Project, Buunshin y Freshney.
WS: What have been your favourite releases and artists lately and what artists have you discovered recently and you would like to recommend?
Phace: Artists I currently do feel are for example The Caracal Project, Buunshin and Freshney, for example.
WS: Aunque, desafortunadamente, no vienes a España muy a menudo, has estado aquí unas cuantas veces. ¿Cómo fue tu experiencia, el público y cuál ha sido tu mejor momento aquí?
Phace: Fijándome en todos mis años de gira, he estado en España muchas veces. Así que tuve la suerte de ver muchas partes y áreas diferentes del país. Siempre lo he disfrutado, me gusta mucho la cultura, la gente y el país. Siempre estoy deseando ir allí. Espero que con toda esta situación de Covid-19 no tarde demasiado tiempo en volver. Aunque parece que no será antes del próximo año….
WS: Although, unfortunately, you don’t come to Spain really often, you have been here a few times. How was your experience, the crowd and what has been your best time here?
Phace: Looking at all my past years of touring I have been around in Spain indeed many times. So I was lucky to see many different parts and areas of the country. I always enjoyed it, I do very much like the culture, people and the country. I am always looking forward to get there. I hope that with all this Covid-19 situation it won’t take toooooo long for me to return. Although it does look like it wont be before next year…
WS: Ahora, unas cuantas preguntas cortas:
· Bolo favorito en el que hayas pinchado: Una vez hice un show en Edimburgo, era un lugar muy pequeño, fui el último set de la noche y el ambiente allí era una locura. Durante mi set la mesa casi se derrumbó dos veces mientras tocaba, fue muy enérgico, loco y abarrotado. Después de mi set sentí como si todo el mundo se fuera del local en una confusión total 😀
· Mejor ciudad del mundo para disfrutar del drum and bass: Para esto diría que Berlín, Londres, París o Los Ángeles.
· Canciones favoritas (que no sean de electrónica): Hay demasiadas como para nombrar sólo una, lo siento.
· Comida favorita: La cocina española, francesa e italiana están en lo más alto 😀
· DJ favorito para hacer un B2B: Me gusta pinchar sets con Mefjus, Misanthrop y Rockwell. Normalmente suelen ser divertidos 😀
· Mejor productor de drum and bass de todos los tiempos: Tengo que poner a Noisia ahí arriba, junto con Kemal cuando estaba activo. DJ Fresh también hizo algunas cosas que sonaban bien en su época. Es muy difícil de decir, con el tiempo siempre cambia y está bien que sea así.
· Tu clásico favorito de drum and bass: Tengo muchos para nombrar aquí pero Johnny L – Piper 😀
WS: Now let’s go with some short questions:
· Favourite gig you have played: Played a show in Edinburgh once, it was a really small venue, I played the last set of the night and the vibe in there was insane. During my set the DJ table nearly collapsed 2 times while I was playing, it was sooo energetic and crazy and packed. After my set it felt like everyone was leaving the venue in utter confusion 😀
· Best city in the world to enjoy drum and bass: For that I’d go with Berlin, London, Paris and LA
· Favourite songs (out of electronic music):Too many to name only one, sorry 😀
· Favourite food: Spanish, French and Italian cuisine is all up there 😀
· Best DJ to go B2B with: I liked playing sets with Mefjus, Misanthrop and Rockwell. They usually tend to be fun 😀
· Best drum and bass producer ever: Got to put Noisia up there, together with Kemal at the time he was around. Fresh did also some cool sounding things at his time. It’s really hard to say, over time it always does change and its good that way.
· Favourite drum and bass classic: I got many here too but name Johnny L – Piper here 😀
