Entrevista a Act Of Rage
Wololo Sound – ¡Hola Jacques! Estamos encantados de tenerte por fin en Wololo Sound para conocerte un poco más. Nuestro público escucha electrónica de todo tipo, por lo que para empezar nos gustaría que explicases que fue lo que te hizo enamorarte de esta música y cómo comenzó tu carrera.
Act Of Rage – ¡Buenas! Muchas gracias por invitarme 😀 Me enamoré del hardstyle por allá en 2007/2008. Escuchaba un montón de jumpstyle y ese género me puso en contacto con el hardstyle. Mis amigos empezaron a ir a fiestas de hardstyle, pero eran mayores que yo y no podía ir. Cuando ya fui “suficientemente mayor” (16 años) como para ir a eventos, el hardstyle se convirtió en una parte de mi vida cotidiana.
Empecé a producirlo también, pero me llevó mucho tiempo para verdaderamente aprender a dominar el proceso de producción, porque estaba cursando un grado universitario y un máster simultáneamente. Cuando mi música estuvo a un nivel de calidad suficiente, tuve la oportunidad de lanzar mi primer EP en Minus is More. Desde ese momento, mi carrera despegó.
Wololo Sound – Hi Jacques! We are pleased to finally have you in Wololo Sound to know you a little bit more. Our followers listen to many types of electronic music, so to start we would like you to talk about what made you fall in love with this music and how your career started?
Act Of Rage – Hi there! Thanks a lot for having me!! 😀 I fell in love with Hardstyle back in 2007/2008. I listened a lot to Jumpstyle and that genre brought me in touch with Hardstyle. My friends started going to Hardstyle parties, but they were older than me and I wasn’t allowed to go. When I was ‘old enough’ (16 years old) to visit the events, Hardstyle became a part of my everyday life.
I started producing it too, but it took me a lot of time to really learn to master the production process because I completed a bachelor and master study simultaneously. When my music was at a good enough quality level, I had the chance to release my first ever EP at Minus is More. From that moment on, my career took off.
WS – QAPITAL es uno de los mayores eventos de la industria, y hace no mucho produjiste ‘The Alpha State’, el himno oficial del show para este año. ¿Cómo fue la producción para un evento tan importante? ¿Te gustaría producir este tipo de canciones para algún otro?
Act Of Rage – Sinceramente, fue un proceso bastante caótico. Estuve lidiando con fechas límite ajustadas y Last Word perdió su voz durante el proceso de grabación (qué irónico xD). Afortunadamente, pudo recuperarse para hacer las vocales una vez más, exactamente como yo las quería. Acabó saliendo muy bien y al público parece encantarle ya que siempre cantan la letra.
Me encantaría hacer más himnos para eventos aún más grandes. Me encanta convertir la atmósfera del festival o de la fiesta en una canción. También valoro mucho los recuerdos que la gente crea cuando suena el tema en el propio festival, porque yo hacía lo mismo cuando iba a eventos como un asistente más.
WS – QAPITAL is one of the main events in the industry, and not long ago you produced ‘The Alpha State’, official anthem of the show for this year. How was the production process for such an important event? Would you like to produce this type of songs for any other events?
Act Of Rage – To be honest, it was quite a chaotic process. I was dealing with tight deadlines and ‘Last Word’ lost his voice during the recording process haha (how ironic xD)! Luckily, he managed to recover to do the vocals just one more time, exactly the way I wanted it. It turned out really great and the crowd seems to love it as they scream along with the vocals.
I would definitely like to make more anthems for even bigger events. I love converting the vibe of the festival or party to a track. I also really value the memories that people make during the track at the festival itself, because I did the same when I was going to events as a visitor.
WS – El pasado año lanzaste ‘Outrageous’, un álbum que dio mucho que hablar con colaboraciones muy acertadas. ¿Te sientes lo suficientemente inspirado para un estreno así pronto? ¿Qué se aprende a través de la producción de compilaciones como estas?
Act Of Rage – No tengo intención de lanzar un nuevo álbum pronto por la situación del Covid-19. La verdad es que necesito al público para poner en el mapa un álbum nuevo. Actualmente estoy trabajando en algunas colaboraciones y otras canciones en solitario, pero tengo planeado lanzarlas una por una durante estos momentos tan difíciles. Aprendí una lección durante mi primer álbum llamado ‘Sabotage‘.
Lo que es indispensable para mi es no poner demasiada presión y dejar que la creatividad fluya y vaya donde tenga que ir. Cuando llegue el momento, ya organizaremos todo el plan de marketing y fluiremos con él. Mi mayor lección es no apresurarse, sino mantener la calidad como máxima prioridad.
WS – Last year you released ‘Outrageous’, an album that was very well-received, with really good collaborations. Do you feel inspired enough to release something like that again soon? What are lessons you learn from the production of albums like these?
Act Of Rage – I’m not planning to release a new album soon because of the Covid-19 situation. I really need the crowd to put a new album on the map with me. I’m currently working on several new collaborations and some solos, but I’m planning to release them one by one during this difficult time. I learned a lesson during my first album called ‘Sabotage’.
What is key for me, is to not put too much pressure on it and let the creativity flow and go wherever it goes. When the time is right, it’s time to organize the complete marketing plan and vibe to it. My biggest lesson is to not rush it but to make quality the top priority.
WS – Sabemos que eres fan de los deportes extremos. Si tuvieses que ponerle ritmo a dichos deportes, ¿cuál de tus últimas canciones lo haría mejor? ¿Influencia este hobby a tu música de alguna forma?
Act Of Rage – Jajaja, esta es una pregunta bastante difícil, ¿pero supongo que ‘Let The Games Begin‘? Veo los deportes extremos como un juego en el que hay infinidad de posibilidades. Pasa lo mismo con la música. Si tienes las herramientas y habilidades adecuadas, las posibilidades son infinitas.
No estoy seguro si mi hobby influencia mucho mi música, pero la originalidad es un componente clave en ambos aspectos. En mi opinión, cada “truco” y “tema” debe contener algo guay y especial, y debe ser algo que no mucha gente haya hecho antes.
WS – We know that you are a fan of extreme sports. If you had the chance to put a soundtrack to those sports, which one of your latest songs would fit the best? Does this hobby influence your music in any way?
Act Of Rage – Hahaha this is a pretty difficult question, but I guess ‘Let the Games Begin’? I see extreme sports as a game in which endless possibilities are present. It’s the same in music. If you’ve got the right tools and skills, the possibilities are endless.
I’m not sure if my hobby really influences my music, but originality is a key component in both aspects. In my opinion, every ‘trick’ and ‘track’ has to contain something cool and special and has to be something that not a lot of people have previously done.
WS – Eres parte de algunos de los temas más escuchados en los últimos años, como ‘Let The Games Begin’ junto a D-Sturb o ‘Like That’ con Radical Redemption. ¿Qué colaboraciones dirías que te han marcado y cómo?
Act Of Rage – ‘Let The Games Begin‘ es definitivamente la que más me ha impactado a mí y a mi carrera. El tema hasta alcanzó a gente de fuera del mundo del hardstyle e hizo mucho por mi carrera. El remix que hice con Radical Redemption a ‘Forgot About Dre‘ también me sirvió mucho. Puso mi nombre ahí fuera y ayudó a que la gente tuviese un primer contacto conmigo y con mi música.
WS – You took part in some of the most listened songs of the latest years, like ‘Let The Games Begin’ with D-Sturb or ‘Like That’ with Radical Redemption. What collaborations would you say have impacted you and how?
Act Of Rage – Let the Games Begin has definitely impacted me and my career the most. The track even reached people outside of the Hardstyle world and it did a lot for my career. The ‘Forgot About Dre‘ remix I did with Radical Redemption also did a lot for my career. It has really put my name out there and helped people get in touch with me and my music for the first time.
WS – Siguiendo la anterior pregunta, ya podemos disfrutar de ‘REJECTOFRAGE’, tu nuevo track con Rejecta. ¿Qué nos puedes contar sobre este lanzamiento?
Act Of Rage – Creo que la disfrutareis tanto como nosotros. Wesley, Rejecta, es un alma con una mentalidad muy parecida a la mía, con los pies en el suelo. Nos lo pasamos muy bien haciéndolo y creo que el tema se lo demuestra a la gente. Lo estrenamos en mi Diving Board Session Live Stream y eso fue también algo memorable.
WS – Following the previous question, we are already able to enjoy ‘REJECTOFRAGE’, your new track with Rejecta. What can you tell us about this release?
Act Of Rage – I think you guys will definitely enjoy it as much as we did. Wesley, Rejecta, is a like-minded soul just like me and really down to earth. We had a lot of fun making it and I think the track also shows that to the people. We premiered it at my Diving Board Session Live Stream and that was really memorable as well.
WS – Muchos artistas centran gran parte de su promoción en el ranking de DJ Mag. Tú, al contrario, has conseguido la posición 135 sin darle tanta importancia como otros. ¿Te esperabas algo así en este inusual año?
Act Of Rage – La única respuesta correcta es: no. No me esperaba esto para nada, me emocionó, ¡ser el número 135 del mundo! Aún sonrío cuando respondo a esto. Quién sabe, ¡a lo mejor estoy dentro el año que viene!
WS – Many artists focus most of their promotion on the DJ Mag ranking. You, on the contrary, have achieved the 135th position without requesting votes. Did you expect something like this in this unusual year?
Act Of Rage – The only right answer is: no. I did not expect this at all, it overwhelmed me, being number 135 in the world! I’m still smiling right now when I’m answering this. Who knows, I might just be in there next year!
WS – Ahora que tu nombre está establecido en la industria. ¿Cuál es el siguiente paso que quieres dar como artista? ¿Alguna exclusiva que nos puedas decir?
Act Of Rage – El siguiente paso es solamente divertirme y entretener a la gente. Me encanta asegurarme de que la gente se lo está pasando en grande. Un objetivo que tengo es actuar en el Gelredome, pero me centro más en pasármelo bien por el camino. Yo creo que puedes divertirte y el resto vendrá consecuentemente. Aparte de la música, también he empezado un proyecto de taller llamado ‘Act of Garage‘.
En él, monto subwoofers personalizados de Act Of Rage en coches, pero también puedes pedir tu nuevo equipo de sonido y montarlo tu mismo o que te lo monten en tu propio garaje. WS – Your name is very well-established in the industry now. What is the next step you want to take as an artist? Any exclusives you can tell us for new projects?
Act Of Rage – The next step is just to have fun and entertain people. I love to make sure people have a good time. A goal of mine is to play the Gelredome, but I pay more attention to having fun along the way. I believe that you can still have fun and the rest will follow. Besides music, I’ve also started a new workshop project called the ‘Act of Garage’.
Here, I build in custom Act of Rage Subwoofers in cars, but it’s also possible to just order your new sound system and build it in yourself or get it built-in at your local garage. WS – Por último pero no menos importante, nos gustaría saber su opinión sobre el acercamiento del hard a la música mainstream. ¿Cuáles podrían ser las ventajas y desventajas de esta difusión?
AOR – Creo que es muy bueno para el hardstyle y definitivamente ayudará a expandir el sonido. Una desventaja que le veo es que los grandes DJs de mainstream podrían tomar el protagonismo con música de DJs de hardstyle. Esto significa que los DJs/productores de hardstyle no podrían tener la oportunidad de presentar ellos mismos su propia música en los grandes escenarios. Pero ya veremos como van las cosas, ¡solo bailad! 😀
AOR – I think it’s really good for Hardstyle music and it will definitely help spread the sound of Hardstyle. A possible disadvantage could be that big mainstream DJ’s would steal the show with music from Hardstyle DJ’s. This means the Hardstyle DJ’s/Producers wouldn’t have the opportunity to showcase their music on the biggest stages themselves. But we’ll see how things go, just dance! 😀
