Un lunes más, tenemos nueva entrevista en Wololo Sound. Esta vez, nos sentamos a charlar con uno de los dúos más en forma de la escena musical electrónica mainstream actualmente. Ellos son Wardt y Willem, W&W. Con ellos hablamos sobre sus raíces, su alias NWYR o la escena electrónica española, entre muchas otras cosas. Además, ambos presentan nuevo tema junto a Timmy Trumpet y Will Sparks, llamado ‘Tricky Tricky’. Sin más dilación, os dejamos con la entrevista.

Wololo Sound: Hola Wardt y Willem. Es un placer tener la oportunidad de entrevistaros. Tenemos mucha curiosidad sobre vuestro dúo NWYR. ¿Qué queríais explorar y cuáles fueron vuestras motivaciones para comenzar con ese increíble proyecto?
W&W: Por supuesto que tenemos experiencia en el trance, es lo que nos llevó a los dos a la música dance. A pesar de que evolucionamos un poco hacia el sonido bigroom house, siempre nos gustó el trance y seguimos haciendo más cosas de trance. Mucha gente seguía preguntando al respecto y pensamos por qué no comenzar un nuevo proyecto para la gente que les gustaban las cosas más antiguas que hicimos. Resultó que a nuestros nuevos fans realmente les gusta mucho, ¡así que es genial verlo!
Wololo Sound: Hi, Wardt and Willem. It’s a pleasure to have the opportunity to interview you. We’re very curious about your NWYR duo. What did you want to explore and which were your motivations to start with that amazing project?
W&W: Of course we have a background in trance, it’s what got us both into dance music. Even tho we kinda evolved into a more bigroom house sound we always still liked trance and kept making more trancy stuff. A lot of people kept asking about it and we thought why not start a new project for the people who liked the older stuff we did. Turned out also our newer fans actually like it a lot so that’s great to see!
Wololo Sound: Hablemos de vuestras raíces. Sois de Holanda, un país conocido por ser el ‘hogar’ de la música electrónica. ¿Tuvisteis dificultades al comenzar vuestra carrera como DJ’s? ¿Qué tuvisteis que hacer para ganaros la vida como DJs / productores?
W&W: Ser de los Países Bajos hace que sea más fácil, pero también puede ser más difícil hacer una carrera de DJ. Por supuesto, hay muchos modelos a seguir y muchas grandes marcas en los Países Bajos, lo que facilita el contacto con ellos, pero también hay más competencia. Simplemente nunca nos rendimos y siempre hicimos nuestro mejor esfuerzo, y siempre hemos sido amables y respetuosos con todos en el negocio.
Wololo Sound: Let’s talk about your roots. You come from the Netherlands, a well-known country for being the ‘home’ of electronic music. Did you have any difficulties at the begging of your DJ career? What did you had to do in order to make a living as a DJs/producers?
W&W: Coming from the Netherlands makes it easier but maybe also harder to make a career out of DJ-ing. Of course there are a lot of role models and a lot of big labels in the Netherlands which makes it easier to get in contact with, but there’s also more competition. We just never gave up and always tried our best, and have always been nice and respectful to everyone in the business.
WS: ¿Cuáles fueron vuestros ídolos musicales?
W&W: Cuando comenzamos, Tiesto y Armin van Buuren siempre fueron nuestra mayor inspiración y todavía lo son. ¡Es asombroso ver cuánto tiempo llevan ambos en la cima y todavía lo siguen haciendo muy bien!
WS: Which were your musical idols back in the days?
W&W: When we started, Tiesto and Armin van Buuren were always our biggest inspiration and they still are. It’s amazing to see how long they are both already at the top, and still doing extremely well!
WS: En 2009 saltasteis a la fama con vuestra conocido tema “Mustang”, pensándolo dos veces, ahora que han pasado más de diez años, ¿qué significó esta canción musicalmente y personalmente para vosotros?
W&W: Es la primera canción que hicimos juntos, antes de que ambos estuviéramos haciendo cosas en solitario, pero esta fue literalmente lo primero que hicimos juntos. Es la canción que nos hizo firmar con Armada y desde entonces Armin nos ha estado apoyando mucho, así que es el comienzo de todo.
WS: In 2009 you ‘jumped’ into fame with your well known tune ‘Mustang’, thinking it twice, now that more than ten years have passed, what did this track mean musically and personally to you?
W&W: It’s the first song we ever made together, before that we were both doing stuff solo, but this was literally the first ever thing we did together. It’s the song that got us signed to Armada and since then Armin has been pushing us really hard, so it’s the very start of everything.
WS: El cambio del nombre de vuestro propio sello discográfico (de Mainstage Music a Rave Culture) ha supuesto un “nuevo capítulo” en vuestra carrera musical. ¿Cuál fue la razón de ese cambio?
W&W: Mainstage lo estaba haciendo realmente muy bien, y tenía seguidores muy leales, se sentía más como una familia o cultura. Entonces, cambiarle el nombre a Rave Culture fue realmente porque los fans ya lo hicieron sentir así.
WS: The change of the name of your own record label (from Mainstage Music to Rave Culture) has led to in fact, into a whole “new chapter” in your musical career. Which was the reason for that change?
W&W: Mainstage was doing really well, and had a really loyal following, it felt more like a family or culture. So rebranding it to Rave Culture was really because the fans already made it feel like that.
WS: ¿Cuál es vuestra opinión sobre la creciente presencia de DJ’s femeninas en una escena electrónica en la que principalmente (hasta hace unos años) estaba formada por hombres? ¿Qué creéis que está funcionando bien y qué hay que mejorar para contribuir a una escena equitativa entre mujeres y hombres?
W&W: Creemos que estas cosas deben suceder naturalmente, y ahora afortunadamente lo son. Los DJ’s deben contratarse en función del talento individual, no por su género. ¡Es genial ver a las chicas del techno hacerlo tan bien!
WS: Which is your view about the growing presence of females DJ’s in an electronic scene in which mostly (until a few years ago) it was formed by men? What do you think is doing well and what needs to be improved to contribute to an equal scene between women and men?
W&W: We think these things need to happen naturally, and now luckily they are. DJ’s should be booked based on individual talent, not because of their gender. It’s great to see the techno girls doing so extremely well!!!
WS: Sobre vuestra faceta como productores: ¿Qué elementos no pueden faltar en una producción de W&W / NWYR?
W&W: ¡Grandes reverbs jaja! Siempre nos gusta la sensación abrumadora de un gran lead con mucha reverberación, esa es definitivamente una de nuestras firmas.
WS: About your facet as producers: Which elements cannot be missing in a W&W/NWYR production?
W&W: Big reverbs haha! We always like the overwhelming feeling of a big lead with lots of reverb, that’s definitely one of our signatures.
WS: Hay toda una remezcla de NWYR al clásico de Safri Duo “Played a Live” (junto con Willem de Roo) y otra al “Lethal Industry” de Tiësto, ¿cuál fue la historia detrás de esos remixes a auténticos clásicos como esos? ¿Tenéis en mente lanzarlos en un futuro cercano?
W&W: ‘Played a Live’ es un bootleg. Willem nos envió un setup y nos gustó mucho, así que trabajamos en ello un poco más. ¡Nos encanta tocar ese en vivo! Lethal Industry
en realidad nunca la hemos remezclado ni hecho ningún bootleg. Sin embargo, tocamos un mashup de esa canción con una canción inédita de Rave Culture.
WS: There’s a NWYR’s remix banger of Safri Duo’s classic ‘Played a Live’ (together with Willem de Roo) and Tiësto’s ‘Lethal Industry’, which was the story behind those remixes to true classics like that? Do you guys have in mind releasing them in the near future?
W&W: Played a live is a bootleg. Willem sent us a setup for it and we really liked it so we worked on it a little more. We love playing that one live! Lethal Industry we actually never remixed / bootlegged. We do play a mashup of that song with an unreleased Rave Culture song though.
WS: Venís a tocar muy a menudo a España. ¿Cuál es vuestra opinión sobre la escena musical electrónica española? ¿Creéis que está en una condición de “buena salud”? ¿Algo que nos queráis sugerir para mejorar?
W&W: ¡España es increíble para nosotros! ¡Nos encanta venir a España y tocar para la increíble multitud allí! Por lo que podemos ver, definitivamente está en buenas condiciones, ¡en realidad algunos de nuestros shows favoritos de este año fueron en España! Lo único que a veces podría mejorarse es la configuración técnica jaja! A veces hemos tenido un par de apagones y equipos de DJ que no funcionan bien, ¡pero el ambiente increíble te hace olvidarlo por completo!
WS: You come to play really often to Spain. Which is your view about the Spanish electronic music scene? Do you think it’s in a ‘good health’ condition? Anything you would suggest us to improve?
W&W: Spain is amazing for us! We love coming to Spain and play for the amazing crowd there! For what we can see it’s definitely in a good condition, actually some of our favourite shows this year were in Spain!! The only thing sometimes could be improved is the technical setup haha! We’ve had a couple of power outages and malfunctioning DJ gear sometimes, but the amazing vibe makes you completely forget about it!

Combinación de ambos. Después del verano anhelamos los clubes, después de todos los espectáculos de clubes anhelamos los festivales nuevamente.
¿Show favorito hasta la fecha?
Imposible elegir uno, pero Tomorrowland este año fue definitivamente TOP 5. ¡En realidad, también BBF este año fue increíble!
¿Un artista infravalorado?
Will Sparks.
¿Comida española favorita?
Paella.
¿Deporte y equipo favorito?
Fútbol. Equipo: Feyenoord (Rotterdam, Holanda)
