Os ponemos en situación: estamos en Toulouse, horas antes de vivir el show que San Holo y compañía tienen preparado para el público francés, y en la misma sala en la que horas después se desató la euforia de los fans galos, nos sentamos cara a cara con uno de los protagonistas de la noche. He aquí nuestra cómoda entrevista a nuestro invitado, el joven y talentoso belga Taska Black.

WS: Primero de todo, Yoah, encantados de conocerte. Muchísimas gracias por atendernos. Ahora mismo estás de gira para promocionar ‘album1‘ de San Holo. ¿Cómo está yendo la gira? ¿La vida del “rockstar”?
TB: Gracias por invitarme. Sí… Algunos altibajos, ¡pero está yendo bien! He tenido un poco de tiempo libre (Enero, Febrero) para escribir nueva música, y tengo la oportunidad de probar un poco de ella durante estos shows. Así que estamos haciendo Europa durante un mes e hicimos Estados Unidos a finales del año pasado. Europa es un poco más tranquila para mí porque vivo en Europa y puedo ir y volver a casa. Vida de “rockstar”… No sé yo, hay altibajos… Es trabajo, ¿Sabes? Es divertido.
WS: First of all, Yoah, nice to meet you. Thanks for having us! So you’re here on tour to promote San Holo’s ‘album1‘. How’s been the tour so far? Rockstar life?
TB: Thanks for having me! Uhm… I mean, yeah. Ups and downs, it’s been great! Like I’ve had a little bit of time off (January, February) to write some new music, so I get to test a little bit of that during these shows. So we’re doing Europe for about a month now and we did US at the end of last year. So, Europe is a little more relax for me because I live in Europe so I can just fly back and forth from home. So, rockstar life… I don’t know, it’s just…ups and downs… It’s work you know?. Yeah, it’s fun.
WS: Hablando de bitbird: San, DROELOE y tú sois los principales rostros del sello, ¿Qué nos puedes avanzar sobre lo que está por venir?
TB: ¿Qué os puedo avanzar? Me temo que no mucho. ‘Gouldian Finch’ saldrá muy pronto. Creo que hay un par de singles más que saldrán pronto y luego ya soltaremos el álbum entero. Me temo que esto es todo lo que puedo decir acerca de ‘Gouldian Finch’. He escuchado el álbum entero hace como dos horas y es genial. Es algo diferente. En mi opinión, suena a algo que muchos sellos no están haciendo ahora mismo, es algo que es muy único para bitbird, entonces espero que la gente lo sepa apreciar.
WS: Talking about bitbird: San, DROELOE and you are the main faces of the label, what can you tell us about what’s coming up next on bitbird?
TB: What can I tease you? I’m afraid no much. ‘Gouldian Finch’ is like coming very soon. I believe there’s a couple more singles coming out soon and then we’re dropping the full album. I’m afraid that’s all I can say about ‘Gouldian Finch’, yeah. But I just listened to the full album like two hours ago and it’s great. It’s something different, for me it sounds like something that are a lot of labels are not doing right now, it’s something that is very unique to bitbird, so I think people will appreciate it.
WS: Y sobre tí, ¿Qué se viene? ¿Qué tienes entre manos?
TB: ¿Qué tengo entre manos? Estoy trabajando en mucha música, pero siento que estoy ahora inmerso en una época en la que quiero hacer cosas dando lo máximo de mí, así que estoy acumulando mucha música, solamente quiero hacerlo perfecto, coger las canciones adecuadas, lanzarlas en el momento adecuado y planear las cosas con tiempo. En cuanto a los shows, voy a seguir girando con San. Voy a EEUU otra vez con San para el tour del ‘album1’ en abril. Luego por supuesto actúo en Red Rocks, lo cual es una pasada, con San, y creo que esto es todo lo que puedo contar por ahora. Sí, algunas colaboraciones emocionantes sobre las que tampoco puedo hablar aún, pero estoy trabajando en un montón de música, hay movimiento en nuestro tour, haremos más shows este año…
WS: And about you, what’s coming up? What do you have in the making?
TB: What do I have coming up? I’m working on a lot of music, but I feel I’m in a time right now where I wanna do things to the best of my ability, so I’m sitting in a lot of music, I just wanna make it perfect, I just wanna take the right songs, put them out at the right time for me and plotting things ahead. On the show side, I’m doing more touring with San. I’m going to the US again with San on the ‘album1’ tour in April. Then we’re obviously playing Red Rocks which is amazing, with San, and I think it’s pretty much all I can announce for now. Yeah, some exciting collaborations I also cannot talk about it yet, but a lot of music I’m working on, there’s movement on our tour inside, we’re doing more shows this year…
WS: Haces música electrónica-indie, pero alguna gente la etiqueta como “future bass”. ¿Cómo te sientes respecto al género hoy en día? Porque parece que hay un cambio de prioridades en la escena del EDM…
TB: No lo sé. No escucho demasiado cuando la gente etiqueta mi música. Nunca lo he hecho yo y nunca he pensado si mi música es “future bass”. Ya hacía cosas antes si quiera de saber qué era el “future bass”, ni tan solo lo escuchaba, conocía algunas canciones pero todo era música para mí, así que empecé a hacer cosas que pensé que estaban bien. Y entonces, aparentemente mucha gente lo empezó a llamar “future bass”. Pienso que a día de hoy sigo haciendo lo mismo, no me muevo por géneros. No me gusta etiquetar la música, así que sinceramente ignoro un poco a la gente, no pienso que sea algo malo, puedes etiquetar y está bien pero en mi cabeza, solo me centro en hacer lo mío.
WS: So, you do like electronic indie stuff, but some of the people may tag it as “future bass”. So how do you feel about the genre nowadays? Because there’s a change of priorities in the EDM scene…
TB: I don’t know. I don’t really listen when people are categorizing my music. I’ve never done that myself and I’ve never thought about my music being future bass. I also like just did stuff before I even knew what future bass was, I didn’t even listen to future bass, I knew a few songs, but it all just sounded like music to me, so I just started doing things that I thought were right. And then, apparently a lot of people starting calling it future bass. So I think today I’m still doing the same thing, I’m just not going by genres… I don’t like to categorize music, so honestly I just kind of ignore people, not that I think it’s a bad thing, like you can categorize and it’s fine but in my head, I just focus on doing myself.
WS: Sobre la situación de la escena EDM ahora mismo, ha aparecido una nueva y reciente ola de ‘tech house’. ¿La has explorado? ¿O quizás consideras jugar un poco con ella?
TB: Estoy definitivamente experimentando con otros tempos como los del house y demás, le estoy como dando mi propio toque a ello, pero no estoy muy familiarizado con esa escena – como también la escena techno, no estoy super familiarizado con ella. Definitivamente la aprecio, especialmente pienso que es fantástica. Estoy experimentando con ella, pero a mi manera de entenderla. No voy a cambiarme a un género porque ahora esté muy de moda, ¿sabes?
WS: So about the EDM scene right now, there’s this new tech house wave. Are you digging that? Are you maybe considering to play a little bit with it?
TB: I’m definitely experimenting other tempos like house tempos and stuff, I’m kind of giving it my own touch to it, but I’m not super familiar with that scene – like also with techno scene, I’m not super familiar with it. I definitely appreciate it, especially for life I think is amazing. And I’m definitely experimenting with it, but kind of my own way of it. I’m not gonna jump into any genre because it’s hot right now, you know?
WS: Después de ver toda la experiencia de San con su primer álbum, ¿estás planeando también el tuyo propio quizás?
TB: Algún día, pero no será en breve. No lo sé. Cuando el momento sea el apropiado, definitivamente haré un álbum, pero no creo que sea para dentro de poco. Pienso que es demasiado pronto.
WS: After watching all these San’s experience with his first album, are you planning also your own album maybe?
TB: One day, but it’s not gonna be anytime soon. I don’t know. When the time is right I’ll definitely do an album, but I don’t think it’s for a very soon. I think it’s too early.
WS: ¿Para cuándo la colaboración San Holo x Taska Black?
TB: No tenemos nada planeado ahora de hecho, pero me encantaría. Me refiero, estoy dispuesto a hacer una colaboración, quizás, la deberíamos hacer de hecho. Sí, quizás en un futuro.
WS: When’s the San Holo x Taska Black collab coming?
TB: Actually we don’t have anything planned right now, but I’d love to. I mean, I’m down for a collaboration, maybe we should do it actually. Yeah, maybe sometime in the future.
WS: Has estado en Bilbao y desconozco si también has estado en otras partes de España, alomejor de turismo. ¿Qué te parece España como país y respeto al público español?
TB: Fui a Barcelona durante una semana hace un par de meses. Sí, hace dos meses fui a Barcelona una semana de vacaciones. Así que sí, me encanta Barcelona, quiero decir, me gusta España en general me encanta el tiempo, por ejemplo Bilbao era mi primera vez en Bilbao y comí unas buenas tapas ahí (me encantan), ¡es un buen lugar!
WS: You’ve been in Bilbao and I don’t know if you’ve been before to other places in Spain, maybe as a tourist. How do you feel about Spain as a country and about the Spanish crowd?
TB: I went to Barcelona for a week like a couple of months ago. Yeah, two months ago I went to Barcelona for a week for a vacation. So, yeah I love Barcelona, I mean, I like Spain in general I just love the weather like Bilbao was also my first time in Bilbao and I had some great tapas there (which I love), so I mean, great place!
WS: Y sobre la cultura ahí, ¿Cómo viviste tu experiencia como músico? Sobre el público… ¿Qué recuerdas?
TB: Creo recordar que Bilbao fue el primer show del tour europeo del año pasado y girar era algo muy nuevo para mí entonces. Ese fue uno de los primeros shows en el que pude hacer una sesión entera de Taska Black y conectar verdaderamente con los fans de Taska Black, y flipé. Era una sala muy pequeña, no había mucha gente, pero estaban dándolo todo, algunos estaban sobre los hombros de otros, cantaban juntos las letras,… Flipé con cómo la gente interactuaba con la música y cómo sentían la música y cómo me conocían en un país totalmente distinto. Eso me pareció una locura.
WS: And about the culture there, how do you feel about your experience as a musician? The crowd… What do you remember?
TB: I think Bilbao was the first show last year of the Europe tour that we were doing and like touring was really new for me back then. That was one of the first shows where I got to do a full Taska Black set and really like connect with Taska Black fans, and I was blown away. It was a really small venue, there were not a lot of people, but they were going crazy, like they were sitting on top of each other shoulders, they were singing along the lyrics… I was blown away by how people interacted with the music and how they felt the music and how they knew me like in a completely another country. That was insane to me.
WS: Antes de terminar, queremos hacer un pequeño juego contigo: ¿Una pregunta que te quieras preguntar a tí mismo?
TB: Wow, necesito pensarla un segundo… ¿Debo responderla?
WS: Sí, alguna pregunta que creas que pueda ser interesante preguntarte a tí mismo.
TB: Tengo un montón de preguntas, pero no tengo la respuesta a ellas, ¿eso vale?
WS: Hagamos una cosa: Hazte una pregunta y en la siguiente entrevista deberás contestarla. Talvez algo que te cambie la vida, una trascendental,…
TB: ¡Oh Dios mío! Ok, intentaré responderla. Mi pregunta era: ¿Cómo sonará mi música en cinco años y cómo se verá mi live show en cinco años? Pero obviamente, no sé la respuesta de eso.
WS: Before we end up, we are going to do a little game with you: a question you want to ask yourself?
TB: Wow, I need to think about it for a second… Do I need to answer it?
WS: Yes, some question that you might find interesting to ask yourself.
TB: I have a lot of questions but I don’t know the answer to them, is that ok?
WS: Let’s do a thing. Ask yourself a question and in the next interview you’ll answer it. Maybe a life-changing question, a trascendental one,…
TB: Oh my God! Ok, I’m gonna try and answer. Like my question was: what would my music sound like in five years and what would my live show look like in five years. But obviously, I don’t know the answer to that.
