Después de que hayan pasado por nuestro medio los últimos meses artistas de la talla de Ran-D, Aversion, D-Block & S-te-Fan o Phuture Noize y B-Front, en el día de hoy os presentamos una nueva entrevista muy, muy especial. Ellos son Wouter y Sjoerd Janssen, nada menos que Showtek, estrellas mundiales del panorama electrónico y leyendas del hardstyle, artistas que dejaron el género hace más de una década y que han vuelto a él con el estatus de absolutos iconos del mismo.
En este retorno en forma de World Tour, los hermanos hicieron una parada en Fabrik el mes pasado y tuvimos la ocasión de charlar con ellos sobre su próximo álbum ‘360 Blue’, sus nuevas colaboraciones, su vuelta en Knockout Outdoor y Qlimax, qué significa el hard para ellos… ¡y mucho más!
Wololo Sound – El año pasado hicisteis un sorprendente regreso al hardstyle, el género que todos amamos y el que solíais producir y pinchar hace más de una década. Nuestra primera pregunta es sencilla y complicada a la vez: ¿qué es para vosotros el hardstyle?
Showtek – El hardstyle significa muchas cosas para nosotros. Sí, nos marchamos un tiempo porque pensamos que sólo podemos hacer hardstyle cuando estamos inspirados y cuando realmente podemos aportar algo a la industria y a la escena. Nos tomamos un descanso porque no podíamos hacer nada nuevo. Era la misma melodía, los mismos sonidos, y pensamos que si nosotros nos aburríamos, la gente también lo haría. Y ahora nos parece inspirador ver tantos productores y sonidos nuevos.
Y sí, el hardstyle forma parte de nuestro ADN, de lo que somos, porque también es parte de nuestra historia y creo que tenemos algo que contar. Creo que venimos con algo realmente fuerte.
Wololo Sound – Last year you made a surprising return to hardstyle, the genre we all love and the genre you used to produce and play more than a decade ago. Our first question is simple and complicated at the same time: what is hardstyle for you?
Showtek – Hardstyle means for us so many things. Yes, we were gone for a while because we felt we can only do hardstyle when we’re inspired and when we can really give something to the industry and the scene. We took a break because we couldn’t do anything new. It was the same melody, the same sounds, and we thought that if we were getting bored, people would get bored too. And now we feel it’s inspiring to see so many new producers, so many new sounds.
And yeah, hardstyle is a part of our DNA, a part of who we are, because it’s also a part of our story and I think we have something to tell. I think we are coming with something really strong.
WS – Y aunque esta es una pregunta que mucha gente os ha hecho, nosotros también queremos saber la respuesta. ¿Por qué decidisteis volver al hardstyle?
S – Nos dimos cuenta que teníamos algo que añadir a nuestra historia de nuevo. Volvimos a encontrar la pasión y la alegría en nosotros mismos y, sinceramente, si no tienes la energía, la pasión o la creatividad para algo… ¡no significa que haya desaparecido! Simplemente no era el momento adecuado y ahora todo ha vuelto y nosotros también. En todos estos años hemos aprendido muchas cosas que podemos aplicar a la música. Puedes escuchar que tenemos nuevas ideas, ahora trabajamos con artistas americanos… así que creo que también podemos hacer una nueva aportación al hardstyle y eso es importante.
Y no hay que olvidar que decidimos volver con un álbum llamado ‘360 Blue’. 360 significa dos cosas. Una es la diversidad de géneros que hemos producido, del techno al EDM pasando por el hardstyle… así que el hardstyle forma parte de esos 360. Además, después de la pandemia tuvimos la oportunidad de empezar de nuevo, así que el círculo es redondo, como si fuera el comienzo de algo nuevo.
WS – And although this is a question a lot of people have asked you, we also want to know the answer. Why did you decide to come back to hardstyle?
S – We found out we had something to add to our story again. We found passion and joy in ourselves again and honestly, if you don’t have the energy, the passion or the creativity for something… it doesn’t mean it’s gone! It wasn’t just the right time! And now everything is back and so do we. In all those years we’ve learnt so many things that we can put back into music. You can hear we have new ideas, we work with American artists now… so I think we can also do a new input for hardstyle and that’s important.
And not to forget is that we decided to come back with an album called ‘360 Blue’. 360 stands for two things. One is the diversity of genres we have produced, from techno to EDM to hardstyle… so hardstyle is a part of 360. And also after pandemic we had a chance to start over again, so the circle is round, like it’s the start of something new.
WS – ¿Cuáles son las diferencias entre el público y los fans del hard dance y del EDM?
S – Creo que lo más bonito del hardstyle es que los fans son muy entregados y activos. Siguen lo que haces, son fans más incondicionales. Yo diría que el EDM también tiene fans locos, pero es una industria más grande con más variedad de artistas. Y creo que el hardstyle podría ser más underground o similar, pero no lo creo. Hay mucho amor y pasión, es una comunidad más comprimida y es precioso. A la gente le apasiona y por eso siempre hay gente ahí, ¿sabes?
WS – What are the differences between the crowd and the fans of hard dance music and the EDM ones?
S – I think the most beautiful thing about hardstyle is that the fans are very dedicated and active. They follow what you do, they’re more die-hard fans. I would say EDM also has crazy fans but it’s a bigger industry with more variety of artists. And I think hardstyle might me more underground or similar, but I don’t think so. There’s a lot of love and passion, it’s a very compressed community and it’s beautiful. People really have a passion for it and that’s why the crowds are always there, you know.
WS – Volvisteis a los harder styles en Australia en el Knockout Outdoor. ¿Cómo se sintió estar en el escenario pinchando música que no habíais puesto en los últimos años?
S -Bueno, ya estábamos trabajando en el álbum, sabíamos que Qlimax estaba al caer… así que en Australia quisimos provocar al público. No tocamos demasiadas canciones nuevas porque queríamos guardarlas para Qlimax, ¡fue como un calentamiento! También nos encanta Australia y les gusta mucho el early hardstyle, así que fue como pinchar a nuestros fans en plan “¡Eh, estamos haciendo algo, no nos perdáis de vista!”.
Y sí, respondiendo a tu pregunta, pinchar esas canciones es genial, hacía tiempo que no lo hacíamos… pero la gente aún se las sabía, cantaban con nosotros, ¡así que fue muy especial!
WS – You made your return to the harder styles in Australia at Knockout Outdoor. How did it feel to be on stage playing music you hadn’t played for the past few years?
S – Well, we were already working on the album, we knew Qlimax was coming… so in Australia we wanted to tease the crowd. We didn’t play too many new songs because we wanted to keep them for Qlimax, it was like a warm-up! We also love Australia and they really like early hardstyle, so it was like teasing our fans like “Hey, we’re doing something, keep an eye on us!“.
And yeah, to answer your question playing those songs is great but we hadn’t played them for a while… but people still knew them, they were singing along, so it was very special!
WS – Vuestra otra gran actuación hasta ahora fue en Qlimax, donde volvisteis para hacer un set increíble, incluyendo música nueva y el anuncio de un nuevo álbum 100% de hardstyle: ‘360 Blue’. ¿Qué podemos esperar de este álbum? ¿Cuándo va a salir?
S – ‘360 Blue’ saldrá el 31 de mayo y va a ser una locura. Tenemos mucha música nueva, esta noche (en FABRIK) vamos a poner algunos temas nuevos… y sí, habrá algunas colaboraciones que todavía están en proceso. Estamos ultimando algunas canciones. Va a haber muchos vocalistas interesantes, nuevos sonidos, nuevos géneros… ¡va a sonar muy refrescante! Creo que nuestro trabajo siempre tiene un elemento sorpresa, ¡siempre es diferente y eso es lo que intentamos pensar de antemano!
Si escuchas a los Showtek antiguos, como nuestro anterior álbum ‘Analogue Players In A Digital World’, siempre intentamos implementar otros estilos como hip hop, rock, un poco de reggae… y eso es algo que siempre hemos hecho en cualquier género, así que lo repetimos para este álbum. La gente puede esperar un enfoque realmente agradable y fresco.
WS – Your other massive performance so far happened at Qlimax, where you returned and played an outstanding set, including new music and the announcement of a new 100% hardstyle album: ‘360 Blue’. What can we expect about this album? When is it going to be released?
S – ‘360 Blue’ is going to come out on the 31st of May and it’s going to be a crazy album. We have a lot of new music, tonight (at FABRIK) we are going to play some new tracks… and yeah, there will be some collabs which are still on the making. We are finalizing some songs. There are going to be a lot of interesting vocalists, new sounds, new genres… it’s going to sound very refreshing! I think our job always have a surprise element on it, it’s always different and that’s what we try to think of it ahead!
If you listen to old Showtek, like our previous album ‘Analogue Players In A Digital World’, we always try to implement other genres like hip hop, rock, a little bit of reggae… and that’s something we always did in any genre so we repeated it for this album. People can expect a really nice and fresh approach.
WS – El primer single del LP fue ‘Dear Hardstyle’, una carta de amor dedicada al hardstyle. La recepción de los fans fue perfecta, y estamos seguros de que este track se convertirá en un himno atemporal del hardstyle. ¿Cuál fue el proceso creativo del tema? ¿Cómo se os ocurrió una idea tan buena para una canción?
S – ‘Dear Hardstyle’ es una oda a los fans, a la industria, a nuestra infancia. Para nosotros también significa algo especial. De niño era como un lugar seguro donde podías albergar todas tus emociones y pasar por cosas de adolescente. Creo que lo más bonito de la música es que puedes plasmar tus sentimientos en ella y compartirlos a través de ella. En este caso, sí que podíamos hablar de ello porque era una carta a nosotros mismos dándonos las gracias por lo que ha hecho posible en nuestra vida, como ir de gira por el mundo compartiendo lo más bonito que podemos hacer, y esperamos seguir haciéndolo durante muchos años más.
WS – The first single of the LP was ‘Dear Hardstyle’, a love letter dedicated to hardstyle. The reception of the fans was perfect, and we are sure this track will become a timeless hardstyle anthem. What was the creative process of the track? How did you come up with such a great idea of a song?
S – ‘Dear Hardstyle’ is an ode to the fans, to the industry, to our childhood. For us it means something special as well. It was like a safe place as a kid where you could harbor all your emotions and go through stuff as a teenager. I think the most beautiful thing about music is that you can put your feelings in it and share those through it. In this case, we could actually talk about it because it was a letter to ourselves saying thanks to what made our life possible, like touring the world sharing the most beautiful thing we can do, and we hope to continue doing it for many more years.
WS – En el álbum encontraremos algunas colaboraciones con artistas como Sub Zero Project, DJ Isaac o Wildstylez, que fueron estrenadas en Qlimax. Sabemos que puede que se vengan algunas más… así que, ¿podéis contarnos si lanzaréis otras collabs pronto?
S – No queremos contarlo porque aún no hemos terminado. Queremos causar impacto y sorprender a la gente. Podemos decir que el álbum será muy Showtek pero no habrá muchas colaboraciones. Como estamos de vuelta, queremos centrarnos en nosotros mismos, hacer un par de colaboraciones y ya veremos lo que viene después. Por ejemplo, con Sub Zero Project tomamos la decisión de trabajar con ellos porque les conocimos, son muy majos y nos pareció bien, pero de todas formas ¡tenéis que esperar y ser pacientes para ver lo que tenemos preparado!
WS – In the album we will find some collabs with the likes of Sub Zero Project, DJ Isaac and Wildstylez, which were premièred at Qlimax. We know some other might be coming as well… so can you tell us if there will be any other collabs coming our way soon?
S – We don’t want to tell it because we’re not done yet. We want to make an impact and surprise people. We can say the album will be very Showtek but there won’t be many collabs. As we’re coming back, we want to focus on ourselves, do a couple collaborations and we’ll see what comes after. For example, with Sub Zero Project we made the decision to work with them because we met them, they are really nice guys and it felt okay, but anyway you have to wait and be patient to see what we have in store!
WS – Este show en Fabrik es parte de vuestro Hardstyle World Tour. ¿Podremos veros en los festivales de hardstyle más grandes este verano?
S – Sí, empezamos nuestra gira en HSU (Knockout Outdoor), luego vino Qlimax, después Bullseye en América, FABRIK esta noche y luego EDC México. Y sí, definitivamente este verano haremos algunos shows más pero vamos a mantenerlo bastante exclusivo. Pero sí, si no te importa volar un poco, ¡podrás encontrarnos!
WS – This show at Fabrik tonight is part of your Hardstyle World Tour. Will we get to see you at the biggest hardstyle festivals this summer?
S – Yeah, we started our tour at HSU (Knockout Outdoor), then Qlimax came, then Bullseye in America, FABRIK tonight and then EDC Mexico. And yes, definitely this summer we’ll do a couple of shows but we’re going to keep it pretty exclusive. But yeah, if you don’t mind flying a little bit you will find us!
