Marc Benjamin nos habla sobre su nuevo trabajo, su trayectoria, su futuro y mucho más
A pesar de la situación en la que estamos inmersos actualmente, son muchos los productores que están tratando de animarnos con su música. Uno de ellos es Marc Benjamin, DJ y productor neerlandés que el viernes pasado lanzaba al mercado su último trabajo de corte melódico junto a Able Faces. Hemos tenido la oportunidad de hablar con él sobre ‘Horizons’, su trayectoria musical, sus proyectos para este año y mucho más. Si quieres saber más, ¡sigue leyendo!

Wololo Sound: ¡Hola Marc! Gracias por darnos la oportunidad de hablar contigo. En primer lugar, ¿podrías presentarte a nuestro público español?
Marc Benjamin: Hola a todos, soy Marc y Benjamin es mi segundo nombre (el real). Empecé en un bar local como DJ en mi ciudad natal cuando tenía 13/14 años, más tarde me pidieron a través de mi hermana que era amiga de los promotores de un evento establecido en los Países Bajos, que fuera su DJ residente, que era un evento muy famoso para los jóvenes allí, esto fue cuando tenía alrededor de 17/18 años… Principalmente empecé a hacer giras por Europa hasta que cumplí 21 años. Luego me pidieron que fuera el DJ residente del club nocturno Escape Amsterdam los jueves por la noche, fui su residente durante 5 años, hasta 2016. Mientras tanto y después de un gran descanso de publicar música, volví a producir de nuevo y a publicar canciones en Dim Mak/Mixmash/Revealed alrededor de 2013. Entonces Tiësto cogió una canción mía y la pinchó en su programa de radio, por entonces yo estaba haciendo únicamente canciones de progressive y llegué a las listas de Beatport con mi canción ‘Riser’ en el sello de Afrojack, Wall Recordings… más tarde, en 2014/2015 hice dos colaboraciones con Laidback luke, también con Benny Benassi o Fedde Le Grand e hice remezclas para Zedd y más tarde empecé a publicar música en Size Records de Steve Angello, Spinnin, Protocol y finalmente mi debut en Heldeep con Wild Bill y el tema ‘Horizons’.
Wololo Sound: Hello Marc! Thanks for giving us the chance to talk to you. First of all, could you introduce yourself to our Spanish audience?
Marc Benjamin: Hi All, I’m Marc and Benjamin is my second real name. I started in a local bar as a DJ in my hometown when I was 13/14 years old, later on I got asked through my sister who was friends with the promoters of an established event in the Netherlands to be their resident DJ which was a very famous event for youngsters in the Netherlands, this was when I was around 17/18 years old… I mainly started touring in Europe until I turned 21. Then I got asked to be the resident DJ for the nightclub Escape Amsterdam on Thursday nights, I was their resident for 5 years, until 2016. Meanwhile after a big break of releasing music I started producing again and releasing songs on Dim Mak / Mixmash / Revealed around 2013. Then Tiësto picked up a song of mine that he played in his radio show, by then I was fully making progressive songs and hit the Beatport charts with my song Riser on Afrojack’s Wall Recordings.. later on in 2014/2015 I did two collaborations with Laidback luke, Benny Benassi, Fedde Le Grand and did remixes for Zedd and later started releasing music on Steve Angello’s Size Records, Spinnin, Protocol and finally my debut on Heldeep with Wild Bill and Horizons.
WS: Acabas de lanzar un nuevo sencillo en Heldeep Records, ‘Horizons’. ¿Qué puedes decirnos de tu nuevo tema? ¿En qué os habéis inspirado para hacerla? ¿Alguna anécdota?
MB: En realidad estábamos experimentando con este nuevo sonido melódico que me recuerda a los tiempos cuando empecé a producir y a mis raíces más cercanas al progressive. Cuando recibimos la parte de Able Faces, que era increíble, supe inmediatamente que era una gran combinación y simplemente sucedió.
WS: You have just released a new single on Heldeep Records, ‘Horizons’. What can you tell us about your new track? What was your inspiration for making it? Any anecdotes?
MB: Actually we were experimenting with this new melodic sound which reminds me of the times back when I started producing and my progressive roots. When we received the awesome topline from Able Faces I immediately knew it was a great match and it just happened!
WS: Retrocedamos un poco en el tiempo. Tu primer gran single fue ‘Riser’, lanzado hace casi ya 7 años en el sello Afrojack. ¿Cómo te sentiste al firmar tu canción con Wall Recordings? Además, una de tus colaboraciones más importantes es ‘We’re Forever’ con Laidback Luke. ¿Cómo fue trabajar en un tema que para muchos es considerado como su comienzo en el EDM?
MB: Yo conozco a Afrojack desde que empecé a pinchar y seguimos en contacto, siempre es amable y me da feedback acerca de mis producciones. Estoy muy feliz de que me diera la oportunidad de lanzar mi canción en su sello. Lo mismo para Luke, lo conozco desde que estuve en su foro de DJs y hemos pinchado en varios eventos juntos, estoy muy contento de tener la oportunidad de crecer en su sello mixmash, estoy muy agradecido de tenerlo como mentor en mi carrera.
WS: Let’s go back in time. Your first big single was ‘Riser’, released almost 7 years ago on Afrojack’s label. How did it feel to sign your track with Wall Recordings? Moreover, one of your most important collabs is ‘We’re Forever’ with Laidback Luke. What was it like working on a track that for many is considered as a beginning of EDM?
MB: I know Afrojack since i started djing and we’re still in touch until now, he’s always kind and gives me feedback on my productions. I’m very happy he gave me the opportunity back then to release my song on his label. Same thing for Luke, I know him since I was on his dj forum and we played several events together, I’m very glad to get the opportunity to develop myself on his mixmash label, im very thankful to have him as mentor in my career.
WS: Has lanzado temas en sellos como Size, Revealed y Spinnin’. ¿En qué momento consideras enviar una pista a un sello tan importante y por qué?
MB: Creo que todo importa en cómo suena y cómo quieres acercarte al oyente. Size, Revealed y Spinnin tienen su propio sonido característico. Si puedes hacer algo parecido a ese sonido, que les guste pero que aún así puedas darle ese toque personal y único pero a la vez ser así de creativo… Creo que eso es lo que me hace decidir enviarlo al sello correcto, para que mi canción pueda encontrar el hogar correcto, donde pertenece.
WS: You’ve released tracks in labels such as Size, Revealed and Spinnin’. At what point do you consider sending a track to such an important label and why?
MB: I think it all matters on how it sounds and how you want to approach the listener. Size, Revealed and Spinnin all have their own signature sound. If you can make something similar that is right up their alley but that you can still give it that personal unique twist and be creative like that… I think that’s what makes me decide to send it out to the right label, so that my track can find the right home, where it belongs.
WS: Ahora volvamos al presente. Este año has remezclado ‘Good Thing’ de Zedd & Kehlani y has editado cuatro singles (‘Wild Bill’, ‘I Got 5 On It’, ‘To The Top’ con Fedde le Grand y ahora, ‘Horizon’). ¿Qué podemos esperar de Marc Benjamin este año? ¿Alguna exclusiva que nos puedas dar?
MB: Mis próximos singles/temas serán todos ‘originals’ y más parecidos a ‘Horizons’. Quiero volver a mis raíces de progressive y darle un nuevo giro a mi música, manteniendo todo muy melódico. También tengo programados más temas para este año, ¡¡espero que os guste a todos!!
WS: Now let’s come back to the present. This year you have remixed Zedd & Kehlani’s ‘Good Thing’ and you have released four singles (‘Wild Bill’, ‘I Got 5 On It’, ‘To The Top’ with Fedde le Grand and now, ‘Horizon’). What can we expect from you during this year? Any exclusive information you can give us?
MB: My next singles will be all originals and more similar to ‘Horizons’ I want to go back to my progressive roots and give it a new twist while keeping it all very melodic. Also later this year I have a few covers lined up, really hope you all like it!!
