Hemos tenido el placer de hablar con dos de las personas que han cabalgado la ola del mejor progressive house de los últimos diez años. Ellos son Stephan y Victor, integrantes de DubVision. Durante todo este tiempo su sonido ha madurado mucho sin perder su esencia y parte de su éxito se basa en ello. Han colaborado con Martin Garrix, Alesso, Afrojack… ¡y tienen grandes cosas para el futuro entre manos!

Wololo Sound: ¡Hola, Stephan y Victor! Es un placer para nosotros poder entrevistaros tras tantos años en un muy buen estado de forma en la industria musical. Muchos os conocerán por ‘Turn It Around’ o vuestras colaboraciones con grandes artistas de los que hablaremos más tarde, pero pocos por vuestros inicios. ¿Cómo recordáis esta época en la que comenzasteis a hacer música y a pinchar?
DubVision: Antes de nada, ¡gracias por invitarnos, chicos! Hacer música es lo que empezó DubVision. ¡Es lo que más nos gusta! Ser capaces de hacer música y pincharla en directo ante un público es el motivo por el cual empezamos como DJs. Queremos ver la reacción de la gente a la música que creamos, ¡es una adicción!
Era un momento muy guay cuando empezamos hace quince años o así. Verdaderamente queríamos firmar por algún gran sello y que grandes DJs y productores como Axwell se percataran de nuestra existencia. Él fue, y sigue siendo, nuestra mayor inspiración. Cuando hicimos ‘All By Myself’ nuestros sueños se hicieron realidad. Axwell nos conoció y pinchó el tema. Desde entonces, nuestra carrera empezó de verdad. ¡Fue un momento super emocionante!
Wololo Sound: Hello, Stephan and Victor! It is our pleasure to get to interview you after all these years in the top of the musical industry. Many people may know you from ‘Turn It Around’ or from other collaborations with other big artists that we will discuss later, but a few people will do from your beginnings. How do you feel when remembering the time when you began making music and DJing?
DubVision: First of all, thanks for having us guys! Making music is what started DubVision. It’s what we like the most! To be able to make music and play it live for an audience is why we started djing. We want to see people’s reaction on the music we make, it’s an addiction!
It was a really cool time when we started 15 years ago or so. We really wanted to get signed to a big label and get noticed by big DJs and producers like Axwell. He was, and still is, our biggest inspiration. When we made ‘All By Myself’, dreams came true. Axwell noticed us and played the track. From there on our career really started. It was a super exciting time!
WS: No es nada raro ver a dos hermanos juntarse para formar un dúo de DJs/productores, tenemos vuestro ejemplo y también otros como Matisse & Sadko o Nervo. ¿Qué ventajas y desventajas creéis que ha supuesto esto para vuestra carrera? ¿Qué soléis hacer para daros un respiro mutuamente cuando habéis pasado demasiado tiempo juntos?
DV: Creemos que no hay desventajas, ¡solamente ventajas en nuestro caso! Nos encanta trabajar juntos en música y compartir momentos en el escenario, explorando el mundo.
WS: It isn’t strange to see two siblings teaming up to create a DJ/producer duo, we have not only you as an example but also Matisse & Sadko or Nervo. What advantages and disadvantages do you think this has supposed to your career? What do you do when you need a break from each other?
DV: We think there is no disadvantage, only advantages in our situation! We really like working on music together and share moments on stage, exploring the world.
WS: Y hablando de pasar mucho tiempo juntos, recientemente tuvisteis que hacer cuarentena en un hotel en Tailandia para poder actuar allí. ¿Qué nos podéis contar de esta convivencia, la experiencia de volver a los escenarios y de cómo están viviendo la situación con el COVID en ciertos países de Asia y Oceanía en los que ya son más libres?
DV: ¡Tailandia fue verdaderamente espléndido! Tienen todo en orden para no esparcir el COVID. La cuarentena estuvo bien, nos quedamos en un buen hotel y pudimos hacer música y entrenar en la habitación. Volver a la cabina fue un sueño: ¡¡echábamos mucho de menos a nuestros Visionairz!! Esperamos que pronto, tanto nosotros como el resto de DJs, podamos volver a pinchar alrededor del mundo.
WS: And talking about spending time together, recently you had to be quarantined in a hotel in Thailand in order to play there. What can you tell us from that experience, going back to the stages and how are they dealing with the COVID situation in certain countries in Asia or Oceania where they have more freedom?
DV: Thailand was really awesome! They have things in good order to not spread COVID. The quarantine was nice, we stayed in a nice hotel and we could make music and workout in the room. Getting back on stage was a dream: we missed our Visionairz so much!! Hope we and all other DJs can play soon everywhere around the world.
WS: Entrando ya a hablar sobre música, lleváis años siendo unos de los estandartes del big room progressive house y, aunque es un género que ya no está en su mejor momento, habéis sabido adaptaros bien y mantener vuestra esencia dentro de él. ¿Cuál ha sido la clave para vosotros para no “venderos” a otro estilo más de moda como han hecho otros artistas?
DV: Al igual que la música en general va cambiando de vez en cuando, los géneros musicales también lo hacen. Intentamos preservar los aspectos clave del progressive house, pero poniendo una salsa distinta tras unos cuantos temas. Estar haciendo exactamente la misma música, con los mismos build ups y los mismos instrumentos se haría aburrido, tanto para los Visionairz que están ahí fuera como para nosotros como productores.
WS: Regarding to music, for the last years you have been one of the referents in the Big Room Progressive House scene, and even though the genre is not in its best moment, you have adapted very well and maintained your essence inside it. What is the key for you to not “sell out” to trendier styles as other artists have done?
DV: Just as music in general changes from time to time, music genres do aswell. We try to maintain the key aspects of Progressive House, but put on a different sauce after a certain amount of tracks. Always making the exact same music, with the same buildups and the same instruments will get boring, for the Visionairz out there and for us as producers.
WS: Como comentábamos al principio, habéis trabajado con grandes artistas como Martin Garrix, Alesso, Afrojack… ¿Qué es lo más valioso que habéis aprendido de ellos tanto como productores como en su faceta más personal y desconocida para todos nosotros? ¿Tenéis algo nuevo entre manos con alguno de ellos u otro gran nombre a destacar?
DV: ¡Son todos grandes productores y seres humanos! Es un privilegio trabajar con artistas tan grandes e inspiradores. Justo ahora estamos trabajando con un par de grandes artistas, pero no podemos adelantar mucho sobre eso, sólo seguidnos en nuestras redes @DubVisionMusic y seréis los primeros en saberlo 🙂
WS: As we previously mentioned, you have worked with huge artists such as Martin Garrix, Alesso, Afrojack… What’s the most valuable thing you have learned from them, both as producers and from their personal version which may be more unknown for all of us? Are you working in any new project with them or with any other big artist?
DV: They are all great producers and human beings! It’s a privilege to work with such big and inspiring artists. We are working with a couple big artists at the moment but can’t say to much about that, just follow us on our socials @DubVisionMusic and you’ll be the first to know 🙂
WS: No nos podemos olvidar de otro dúo con el que tenéis una buena relación desde hace años: Firebeatz. En el EDC Las Vegas 2018 realizasteis por sorpresa vuestra primera actuación conjunta como METAFO4R y desde entonces también nos habéis mostrado música bajo ese alias. ¿Cómo surgió la idea de juntaros cuatro personas a hacer música y pinchar? ¿Por qué con ellos y no con otro artista? ¿Qué tienen de especial para vosotros?
DV: Ambos teníamos un montón de música por ahí que no encajaba con nuestras actuaciones principales, DubVision y Firebeatz. Así que decidimos crear un nuevo proyecto alrededor de esa música. Hemos sido buenos amigos durantes muchos muchos años, quedamos con ellos tanto cuando estamos de tour como en nuestra vida privada. Con suerte haremos más shows como METAFO4R en el futuro cercano.
WS: We don’t forget about another duo with whom you’ve been very close to for many years: Firebeatz. During EDC Las Vegas 2018 you debuted by surprise your new project METAFO4R, and after that you even released music under that alias. How did the idea of four people teaming up to make music and DJ? Why with them and not with other artists? Why are they special to you?
DV: We both had a lot of music laying around that didn’t suit our main acts, DubVision and Firebeatz. So we decided to build a new act around that music. They’ve been good friends for many many years, we hangout with them while touring aswell as privately. Hopefully we get to do some more METAFO4R shows in the near future.
WS: También habéis publicado temas juntos, pero sin usar ese alias, como por ejemplo ‘Lambo’. ¿Podríais explicarnos exactamente hacia qué tipo de sonidos queréis enfocar el proyecto de METAFO4R y hacia cuáles el de DubVision?
DV: METAFO4R se enfoca a los sonidos más duros y rave. DubVision es más melódico emocionalmente hablando.
WS: You also released music together, but not under that alias, like you did with ‘Lambo’. Could you please explain what kind of sounds are you looking for to define METAFO4R’s project and which ones for Dubvision’s?
DV: METAFO4R is more rave and harder. Dubvision is more melodic in an emotional way.
WS: El tema de los álbumes es algo que nos llama bastante la atención y con todo este tiempo alejados de los escenarios imaginamos que habréis empezado muchas nuevas ideas, terminado otras que ya estaban en proceso… ¿Las veremos en un álbum debut o preferís seguir apostando por el formato single?
DV: Hemos hablado del tema álbum, pero no es exactamente a lo que aspiramos por ahora. Pero por supuesto llegará en algún momento en el futuro, ¡esperamos que estéis listos!
WS: The album topic is something that is really appealing, and with all the time you have had far from the stages, we can imagine you must have started a lot of new ideas, finished others that were in progress… Can we expect a debut album from you or do you still prefer the single format?
DV: We did talk about an album, but it’s not what we are aiming for at the moment. But it’s gonna happen for sure somewhere coming time, hope y’all ready!
