Hola chicos. En primer lugar muchas gracias por atender a nuestro medio y a los seguidores que tenéis en España.
WS: En primer lugar queríamos hablar un poco sobre vuestros inicios, y sobre cómo afectó el “boom” del EDM de 2011-2012 en vuestras carreras. ¿Nace Magnificence en aquel momento? ¿En qué punto o cuándo os dais cuenta de que podéis vivir de la música?
Magnificence: Este “boom” en la escena fue algo que afectó a toda la industria de la música. La música empezó a cambiar y la escena se fue hacia el lado mainstream. Cambió para todos porque se mantuvo evolucionando, pero nosotros no sentimos que nos afectara. Empezamos hace 8 años, así que seguíamos todavía en el comienzo de nuestra carrera en esos años.
Hey guys. First of all, we just wanted to thank you for having us today and for attending the followers you have in Spain.
– We would like to start speaking a little bit about your beginnings and ask you about the EDM ‘boom’ of 2011-2012. How did this boom affect your career? Was Magnificence born at that moment? When did you realize you could live off of music?
Hello everyone! And thanks Wololo sound for inviting us! The boom effect in the house scene was something that affected the whole music industry. The music started to change and the scene started to go mainstream. The music changed for everyone because it kept evolving, but we didn’t feel like it was holding us down. We started 8 years ago, so we were still in the beginning of our own process during 2011 – 2012.
WS: Hablemos de Progressive House. Este género parece que perdió un poco de fuelle desde 2015. ¿Cuál creéis que fue la razón? Parece que el regreso de Swedish House Mafia ha incitado al regreso del Progressive. ¿Cómo veis el futuro cercano para el género?
Magnificence: Creo que la mayoría de la gente en la escena y la mayor parte de los fans se cansaron del mismo sonido repetitivo que el progressive house tuvo en esos momento finales de auge. Realmente nos encanta el progressive house, pero la razón por la que hicimos una pausa fue porque queríamos encontrar nuevos impulsos y nuevas líneas creativas para expresarnos. Swedish House Mafia quizá fue la mayor influencia del género, así que sería algo más que lógico que fueran ellos los que lo revivieran de nuevo después de estos años, pero esto es algo que la escena tendrá que ver en un futuro cercano.
> Let’s talk about progressive house. It seems that this genre ran out of steam a little bit in 2015. Why do you think this happened? It seems as if the return of SHM has incited the return of progressive house. How do you see the near future of this genre?
I think that most of the people in the scene and most of the fans got tired of the same repetitive sound that progressive house had in the final moments of it’s peak. We really love progressive house, but the reason why we took a pause from progressive house is because we wanted to look for new impulses and creative ways to express our way of thinking. The Swedish House Mafia was perhaps the biggest influencer of this genre, so it would be more than logic that they would give this genre so much life again after all these years, but this is something that the house scene has to figure out in the near future!
WS: Seguimos hablando de SHM, ya que os pincharon dos IDs, ‘Cobra‘ y ‘Out Of My Mind‘, en un set que permanecerá en la historia por su importancia. ¿Cómo os sentisteis en ese momento? ¿Sabíais que esto iba a pasar antes del set o fue una sorpresa también para vosotros?
Magnificence: Nos llegó un vídeo desde Axtone donde Axwell /\ Ingrosso ponían nuestro tema ‘Fire‘ durante UMF Miami 2018 y nos emocionamos de ver tantas buenas reacciones. No sabíamos seguro el regreso de SHM, así que el momento en el que empezaron fue una gran sorpresa para nosotros también. Cuando reconocimos nuestro tema ‘Out Of Mind‘, nos miramos y nos volvimos locos. No podíamos creer que estuviera pasando, SHM fue una gran parte de nuestra motivación hace 6 años. Así que imagínate lo que pasó cuando también pusieron ‘Cobra‘… Nunca olvidaremos este sentimiento de logro.
> Let’s continue talking about SHM. They played two of your IDs, ‘Cobra’ and ‘Out Of My Mind’ in a set that will be forever remembered due to its importance. How did you feel in that moment? Did you already know that this was going to happen or it was also a surprise for you?
We got a video from Axtone that Axwell & Ingrosso played our track “Fire” during UMF Miami 2018 and we were psyched to see so many good reactions on this. We didn’t know for sure that SHM came back, so the moment they started was a big surprise for us too. From the moment we recognized our track “Out Of My Mind”, we looked at each other and went nuts. We couldn’t believe that this was happening, especially because SHM has been a huge part of our vision and motivation 6 years ago. With this feeling going on during the set you can imagine what happened when they played “Cobra” too… We will never forget this feeling of achievement.
WS: Axtone, Revealed, Spinnin’, DOORN, Code Red, Protocol, Zerothree, STMPD… ¿Cuál es el siguiente sello a conquistar y por qué?
Magnificence: Para nosotros no importa qué sello sea, para nosotros lo importante es la gente que trabaja ahí y cómo nos sentimos y trabajamos con ellos. Solo queremos encontrar nuestro propio camino creativo y eso esto todo. Axtone y STMPD son sellos con los que nos encanta trabajar porque nos movemos en la misma idea creativa.
> Axtone, Revealed, Spinnin’, DOORN, Code Red, Protocol, Zerothree, STMPD… What is the next label for you to conquer and why?
For us it doesn’t matter what “label” it is, but for us it’s all about the people that are working there and how we vibe and work with these people. We just want to find our own creative path and what works for us. Axtone and STMPD are labels that we love to work with, because we level on the same creative way.
WS: Acabáis de lanzar ‘Closer‘ en STMPD RCRDS (analizábamos este tema aquí), con una línea musical bastante similar. ¿En qué o quién os habéis inspirado para lograr este sonido que tanto os caracteriza ahora? ¿Cómo ha sido la experiencia de trabajar en el sello de Martin Garrix?
Magnificence: STMPD RCRDS es un sello fresco y novedoso y Martin es una gran persona. Nosotros contactamos con Martin y le enviamos algunas ideas y ‘Closer‘ fue una de las opciones que más le gustaron. La terminamos, se la enviamos y estábamos listos para el día. No queríamos que fuese solo un tema, sino algo más especial y que nuestros seguidores se dieran cuenta de algo. Con la campaña #Closer intentamos que la gente pasara más y mejor tiempo juntos y (re)empezar a mirarnos entre nosotros en vez de estar con la pantalla del móvil. Fue genial hacer esto con el equipo de STMPD RCRDS.
> You have just released ‘Closer’ in STMPD RCRDS, with a pretty similar musical line. To achieve this sound that nowadays characterizes you, which has it been your source of inspiration? How was the experience of working in the label of Martin Garrix?
STMPD RCRDS is a fresh label and Martin is a great person. We had contact with Martin and we sent him some ideas and “Closer” was one of the drafts that he really liked. We finished it up, send it over and we were all ready to go! We wanted to do something special with this release, because we didn’t want to just release the record, but we wanted to let our followers realise something. With the “#Closer” campaign we try to activate people to take more quality time together again and (re)start lookng at eachother instead of only your phone screen, it is great to do this together with the team of STMPD RCRDS.
WS: Como hemos mencionado antes, habéis pasado por gran variedad de sellos de grandes artistas como Axwell, Hardwell, Nicky Romero, Martin Garrix… ¿Cuáles han sido los artistas que más os han ayudado a ser quienes sois ahora?
Magnificence: Habría que poner a todos los que mencionáis aquí, porque son los artistas que tienen o tuvieron mucha influencia en la escena dance y que nos dieron las oportunidades en nuestra carrera a su vez… Para nosotros es importante cómo sentimos y vemos la música, cómo trabajamos juntos y cómo evolucionamos desde ese momento. Creo que esta es nuestra clave. Nuestro crecimiento personal y el crecer como amigos nos ayuda a convertirnos en lo que somos y marcar unos objetivos que queremos alcanzar.
> As we have previously mentioned, you have releases in labels of big artists such as Axwell, Hardwell, Nicky Romero and Martin Garrix… which artists have helped you the most to become who you are?
It would be all of the artist you mention here, because these are the artists that have or had so much influence on the dance scene and gave us oppertunities in our career as well.. For us it’s all about how we feel and see music, how we work together and how it kept evolving from that moment. I think that’s the most important key for us. Our personal growth and the growth that we have as friends helps us to become who we are and the set the goals of what we want to achieve.
WS: ¿Planeáis a corto-medio plazo la producción de un álbum completo? ¿Alguna primicia que nos podáis adelantar sobre próximos lanzamientos?
Magnificence: Obviamente tenemos nuestros objetivos futuros marcados. Nos encantaría crear un álbum pero no hay anuncios respecto a eso. Tenemos algunos interesantes lanzamientos para salir de los que estamos orgullosos, remezclas y originales. Podemos decir que estamos muy felices con las cosas que nos están pasando en este momento y estamos disfrutando cada segundo.
> Do you plan, in a short-medium term, to produce a full album? Any scoop that you can give us on upcoming releases?
Obviously we have our future goals set. We would love to do an album, but no big announcements on that part. We have some exciting releases coming which we are really proud of, both originals and remixes .We can say that we are really happy with all of the things that are happening at the moment and we enjoy every single moment of it.
WS: Holanda es sin duda uno de los países con mejor cultura musical de Europa. ¿Cómo veis la escena allí en este momento? ¿Cuál crees que es la clave de su éxito?
Magnificence: La escena en Holanda está muy desarrollada, empezó en los principios de los 90 con la música house. Ha progresado desde un movimiento underground hasta expandirse genéricamente. Esto significa que cada vez más niños están conociéndolo y algunos de esos niños empiezan a tempranas edades a pinchar o producir en vez de empezar con instrumentos clásicos como el violín, la guitarra o el piano. Después del movimiento EDM de estos años la escena holandesa está volviendo a esos sonidos underground, más house, más bass, más percusión. Creemos que es genial ver estos cambios porque está volviendo a sus raíces. Personalmente nos gustan más el ambiente de un club íntimo, las raves y el hecho de que es todo por la música. Esto es lo que hace la escena auténtica y pura.
> Without a doubt, Holland is one of the countries that has the best musical culture of Europe. How do you see the scene there nowadays? What do you think that is its key of success?
The scene in The Netherlands is so well develloped, started in the early ’90 with house music. It developed from a underground movement to a widely spread musical genre. This means more and more young kids are drawn to the genre. And some kids even start at a young age with dj/producer lessons, instead of taking on he classic instrument lessons like violin, guitar or piano. After the big EDM movement over the last years, the Dutch scene is going back to the more underground vibe, more house, more bass, more percussion. We think that it’s great to see this changes, because it’s partially going back to it’s roots. We personally love the intimate club vibes, the raves and the fact it’s all about the music. This is what makes the scene authentic and pure.
WS: Dentro de poco es el ADE (Amsterdam) donde estaréis en el evento de REVEALED. ¿Qué significa esta semana para gente “de la casa” como vosotros?
Magnificence: Cada año el ADE es un gran momento para quedar con amigos de la industria, seguidores, otros artistas y socios. Hay tantas cosas ocurriendo en esa semana que se crea un caos. Hay muchísima gente que no ves con frecuencia así que es bueno poder quedar durante el ADE. Este año encabezamos la Revealed Night y durante el día daremos una masterclass sobre nuestras técnicas de producción. Es genial actuar en el evento Revealed, el año pasado fue un descontrol.
> It will be ADE (Amsterdam) in no time, where you will be performing at Revealed’s event. How do artists from your country (as you) live this special week?
Every year ADE is a great moment to catch up to our friends from the industry, our followers, other artists and global partners. There are so many things happening in this week, so it’s also a huge chaos! There are lots of people that you don’t see that often, so it’s nice to finally meet up again during ADE. This year we do a headlining Mainstage show case at the Revealed Night and during the day we’ll give a masterclass about our production techniques. We love to perform at the Revealed event, last year we had a blast too!
WS: ¿Conocéis algo la escena española? ¿Algún festival o DJ que sigáis? ¿Os gustaría actuar pronto en nuestro país?
Magnificence: Para nosotros lo que más conocemos de España es Ibiza, pero no estamos muy al tanto de la escena española. El año pasado fuimos a Ibiza junto a Sunnery James & Ryan Marciano y nos enamoramos con el ambiente que allí había. Nos encanta la forma de vida española, la relajación, la calidez y lo acogedor de la gente y la energía para ir de fiesta. Obviamente hay más de España que solo Ibiza, vemos grandes festivales en Barcelona, Bilbao, Madrid o Valencia, así que esperamos descubrir el resto por nosotros mismos en los próximos años.
> Do you know something about the Spanish scene? Is there any festival or DJ that you follow? Would you like to perform in our country?
For us the best known scene in Spain is Ibiza of course, but we aren’t too familiar with the Spanish scene so far. Last summer we went to Ibiza together with Sunnery James & Ryan Marciano for a few days and we fell in love with the whole vibe that was going on. We really like the Spaninsh way of live, the relaxed, warm en friendly people and the on going energy to party together. Obviously there’s more to Spain than only Ibiza, we see great festivals throughout the entire country, from Barcelona to Bilbao, from Madrid to Valencia, so we hope to discover the rest of Spain in the upcoming years for ourselves!
