Wololo Sound entrevista a Levela en su última visita en Sevilla, en la Sala Cosmos
Levela es uno de los artistas más destacados dentro del jump up drum and bass y el sonido roller que tanto se está poniendo de moda últimamente, aparte de ser uno de los más asiduos a nuestro país, en concreto Andalucía, en lo que a drum and bass se refiere. Le preguntamos por su relación con Andalucía, su cambio de estilo, sus nuevos proyectos y mucho más:

Wololo Sound: Vienes a España muy a menudo, en concreto a Andalucía. ¿Cómo ves esta región y cuál ha sido tu mejor bolo aquí?
Levela: Me encanta venir a España, los ravers y la gente es muy amable, les encanta el drum and bass y siempre me lo paso genial cuando vengo. Mi mejor bolo aquí ha sido probablemente Dub Elements & Friends, el festival Open Air, la primera vez que fue en Sevilla.
Wololo Sound: You come to Spain very often, especially Andalusia. How do you see this region and which one has been your best gig here?
Levela: I love coming to Spain, the ravers and the people are so friendly, they love drum and bass and I always have a great time. My best show here in Spain has probably been Dub Elements & Friends, the Open Air festival, the first time it was in Seville.
Wololo Sound: Aunque se te conoce por ser un artista de jump up hace poco has cambiado un poco el estilo, yéndote hacia un lado un poco más oscuro e inspirado en el roller, ¿cómo decidiste hacer este cambio? ¿Adónde crees que se dirige toda esta moda del “roller“?
Levela: He hecho jump up durante más o menos ocho años, bastante tiempo. Me encanta el jump up y siempre me va a gustar pero quería probar algo diferente, algo nuevo. Me gustaban los sonidos más oscuros y profundos y ahora mismo disfruto creándolos. Tengo muchos proyectos muy emocionantes, al igual que muchas cosas de deep. Ha sido un cambio muy natural para mí.
WS: Although you are known for being a jump up artist you recently switched a little bit going more into a deep and rolling sound, how did you decide to come up with this change? Where do you thing all of this “roller” trend is going?
Levela: I was making jump up for like eight years, for a long time. And I love jump up, I’ll always love jump up but I wanted to try something different, try something new. I liked the deeper and darker sounds and I enjoy making them at the moment. I have a lot of exciting projects coming up, a lot more deep stuff as well. It has been a natural change for me.
Wololo Sound: ¿Cuál es la mayor diferencia que ves entre el jump up belga y el inglés?
Levela: En Bélgica les gusta sobre todo el jump up chirriante, muchos sonidos agudos y se vuelven locos con eso. En Reino Unido están ahora mismo con esto de los rollers. Allí les encanta este tipo de jump up. Hay una diferencia muy grande entre Reino Unido y Bélgica pero ahora mismo no sabría cómo describirlo. Ambos son geniales y la gente que adora el drum and bass piensa igual.
WS: What’s the main difference you see about jump up in the UK and in Belgium?
Levela: In Belgium specifically they love screechy jump up, lots of high pitch sounds and they go crazy for that kind of sounds. In the UK there’s this roller thing right now. The UK loves this kind of jump up. There’s a different sound between the UK and Belgium and I don’t really know how to describe it. Both English and Belgian jump up are great, and people that love drum and bass feel it as the same.
Wololo Sound: ¿Cómo ves la escena de drum and bass en Europa y en el mundo ahora mismo?
Levela: Es muy sana ahora mismo. Hay muchos eventos en cada país, a cada lugar que voy el drum and bass se vuelve más y más popular, hay clubs más grandes, sitios más grandes, festivales enormes… Creo que ahora mismo el drum and bass está muy sano.
WS: How do you see the drum and bass scene in whole Europe and worldwide right now?
Levela: It’s really healthy at the moment. There’s a lot of events in every country, everywhere I go drum and bass is becoming more popular and there are bigger clubs, bigger venues, big festivals… I think drum and bass is very healthy right now.
Wololo Sound: Se te ha relacionado con Critical Music últimamente, el sello de Kasra, lanzando mucha música ahí y participando en sus eventos. ¿Cómo es tu relación con el sello?
Levela: Bueno, Kasra estaba pinchando un tema mío llamado ‘Exhale‘, que salió el año pasado. Cuando me enteré, le escribí y le mandé más música. Me dijo que escribiera un EP para Critical y pasé seis meses trabajando en mi ‘Cerebral EP‘, que salió hace unos meses. He hecho un par de remixes para Critical y estoy haciendo otro EP para ellos para final de año. Así que sí, ¡fue simplemente a partir de que él pinchara ‘Exhale‘ que le mandé más música y le gustó!
WS: You have been very linked to Critical Music lately, Kasra’s label, releasing a lot of music there and taking part in their events. How is your relation with the label?
Levela: Well, Kasra was playing a track of mine called ‘Exhale‘, which came out last year. When I found out he was playing it I messaged him and sent him some more music. He told me to write an EP for Critical and I spent six months making my ‘Cerebral EP‘, which came out some months ago. I’ve done a couple of remixes for Critical and I’m doing another EP for them at the end of the year. So yeah, it was just from him playing ‘Exhale‘ that I sent him some more music and he really liked!
Wololo Sound: ¿Cómo va tu sello MultiFunction?
Levela: El sello paró más o menos un año, no hemos lanzado nada en un tiempo pero vuelve a la carga el mes que viene. El tema con el que terminé mi sesión esta noche que tiene una vocalista de jazz sale en más o menos tres semanas y tenemos más música preparada para el resto del año.
WS: Seguís haciendo eventos, ¿no?
Levela: Sí, aún hacemos eventos en Inglaterra. De hecho tuvimos uno anoche, de modo que esta noche no he dormido nada. Los eventos funcionan muy bien, nos hemos cambiado a un recinto más grande, por lo que tenemos mayores fiestas y cada dos meses tenemos eventos en Brighton e Inglaterra.
WS: How is your label MultiFunction doing right now?
Levela: The label stopped for like one year, we didn’t release anything for a while but it’s coming back next month. The track that I ended my set with tonight that has got a jazz singer in it is coming out in like three weeks and we have more music lined up for the rest of the year.
WS: You are still doing events, right?
Levela: Yeah, we are doing events in England. We actually had one last night, I have had no sleep this last night as well. Events go really well, we just moved to a bigger venue too, so we have got bigger parties and every two months we have events in Brighton and in England.
Wololo Sound: ¿Cuáles son tus artistas y temas favoritos de drum and bass ahora mismo?
Levela: De jump up me encantan Upgrade y Annix, hacen una música muy buena y son muy buenos amigos míos también, buenos tíos. Mi tema favorito… Es una pregunta difícil, ahora mismo me cuesta pensar en uno, pero hay un tema de InsideInfo llamado ‘Airwaves‘ que he pinchado hoy que es buenísimo, una obra maestra de principio a fin. Es un tema espléndido.
WS: Who are you favourite artists and which are your favourite drum and bass tunes right now?
Levela: For jump up I love Upgrade and Annix, they make really cool music and they are really good friends of mine too, good guys. My favourite track… That’s a hard question, I can’t figure out a track now, but there’s a track from InsideInfo called ‘Airwaves‘ that I played today, that’s a really good track, a masterpiece from start to finish. It’s just a really great track.
Wololo Sound: Aparte de este EP que lanzas a finales de año en Critical, ¿hay alguna colaboración o trabajo que salga pronto a la luz?
Levela: Sí, tengo otro EP que sale el mes que viene en Souped Up Records, el sello de Serum, y también estoy trabajando en algo con Noisia, así que es otro EP para finales de año.
Wololo Sound: ¿En Vision?
Levela: ¡Sí, estoy muy emocionado!
WS: Apart from this EP you are releasing and the end of the year in Critical, any collaboration you have on the road or any works that are going to be released soon?
Levela: Yes, I have another EP coming out next month on Souped Up Records, which is Serum’s record label and I’m also working on something with Noisia at the moment, so that’s another EP coming at the end of the year.
WS: Vision?
Levela: Yes! I’m really excited!
