Entrevista con Sophie Francis/ Interview with Sophie Francis

Wololo Sound: Hola Sophie.

WOLOLO SOUND: Hi, Sophie. It’s a pleasure to have the opportunity to interview you. Let’s start talking about your roots: Your original artist name was Sophie’s Choice and now we all know you as Sophie Francis. Why did you decide to change the artist name and which is the meaning for that?

SOPHIE FRANCIS: I decided to change my artist name because Sophie’s Choice has a lot of different meanings and I wanted to represent my name something like super positive. And that’s also why Sophie Francis; because Sophie Francis it also comes from St. Francis Bay, which is a city where I lived in South Africa when I was small, and those are like the best memories from my childhood. So that’s something that I wanted to get, something that makes me happy and sounds nice for all the people and easy to remember, so that’s why it’s Sophie Francis.

WS: You come from the Netherlands, a well-known country for being the ‘home’ of electronic music. Did you have any difficulties at the begging of your DJ carreer? What did you had to do in order to make a living as a DJ/producer?

SF: Many, many difficulties. Like, I think the main one is because I’m a girl and when you’re a girl you have to prove yourself at least twice as hard because you have to prove everyone every single time. But when you do that, they give you so much respect and I really love it. So that’s nice. Like the beginning it’s super hard.

I started when I was about 15, so that was quite young. I started in very local pub in my village, and then I went to a little festival that my village had and they asked me to play there. From there, I went to bigger festivals and bigger festivals. And in one of those festivals I found my manager Lia. It was actually insane. She came up to me saying: “Hey, do you need a manager?” and I didn’t even know what a manager was, because I didn’t think I was at the level that I could be managed. So she was like: “Hey, do you want me to manage you?” And I was like: “yes, of course” because she’s such a nice girl and has so much good energy. So she put me in the bests clubs of the world like I think two months after we met and from there it just went sky upwards and it’s nuts. That’s crazy.

¿Spinnin’ Records me quiere?

WS: In 2017 you were signed to Spinnin’ Records, what did it meant musically to you?

SF: It was insane and unexpected because they emailed me saying they wanted to sign me and my reaction was: “What? Spinnin’ Records wants me? It’s insane because it’s the biggest label ever!”. I grew up with that label, so it was my dream to release on Spinnin’. They give you so many cool writers that you can work with and they give you so much guidance like musicwise and what you can do , what’s better for your profile and what’s not. So, it was abosultely insane. Creativewise they give you so much to grow on and that was absolutely cool.

WS: You’ve now started a documentary series called ‘Beyond Fitness’, consisting in a weekly vlog in which you show your fans how you work out when you are not in a dj booth or at the studio. How did this brilliant idea came across?

SF: It was on the beginning of this year because of course when Avicii passed and then Hardwell stopped and then Nicky Romero stopped and all the mental problems that he was having… and all the DJs were having so much problems and they were struggling with touring. Me I was like, fuck this a very hectic and busy world. So, how can I improve my own mental health and become healthier and how can I atract other people to become healthier? Because (sport) it’s a really fun thing to do and people don’t realize how cool it is. So that’s why I wanted to show people saying you can work out, you can have so much fun and it’s mentally and phisically super good for you. So that’s why I created those documentaries, to give people more inspiration to start doing stuff.

WS: Which is your view about the growing presence of females dj’s in an electronic scene in which mostly (until a few years ago) it was formed by men? What do you think is doing well and what needs to be improved to contribute to an equal scene between women and men?

SF: I think it is slowly slowly improving, but it’s not as much. Because as I said earlier, girls have to prove themselves twice as hard at least. So many girls are so talented: they can write songs, they can sing, they can produce their own stuff… and they can DJ, mix. And they can do everything. And guys don’t wanna accept that and they try like to put you down always. Because they are like: ‘we are guys, we can do better’ and although girls can sometimes do even more than the guys do. So, it’s just the girls proving themselves. Keep proving ourselves and it would get better. It does, but it’s just a slow process. So prove yourself… and that’s better!

WS: About your facet as a producer: What elements can not be missing in a Sophie Francis production? Which have been your musical influences?

SF: Energy, energy, happiness, growingess and improveness. Because I really like giving energy in my tracks because I have energy I try to convey a lot of energy in my sets and that’s what I try to give in my tracks as well.

WS: You’re playing tonight in Opium Barcelona together with Martin Garrix, how does it feel to share stage with the number 1 DJ of the world right now?

SF: It’s insane. He’s such a nice guy and he’s so humble. When you get to share stage with him it’s like a ‘wow’ factor. I’m still speechless that I can actually play with Martijn.

WS: You’ve played a lot in Spain, especially in Mallorca. Which is your view about the Spanish electronic music scene? Do you think it’s in a ‘good health’ condition?

SF: It changes so much. Every single year there’s a different direction and there’s a different crowd like from different countries. So, I think if you just, it’s always good, like every single dancefloor is great; but it’s just changing. That’s ok. Like if you can adapt as a DJ, then you’re absolutely fine.

I think so, but as I see DJs here, instead of helping each other, they like compete with each other. In the Dutch music scene, Djs support each other. I think if they would work together, create a lot of music together, they’d become so much more apreciated, so much better. There’s so much talent here and if you just combine that, then I think they would be absolutely at the top. You guys go high with reggaeton and all that stuff, but if you guys do the same with electronic music, just work together, embrace each other… I think it will be insane.

¿Club o festival? Depende del público.

¿Show favorito hasta la fecha? Realmente no tengo uno.

¿Un artista infravalorado? Oh… esa es una pregunta difícil. Creo que, mirando desde una industria holandesa… Albert Neve. Está absolutamente loco. Debería estar en lo más alto.

¿Comida española favorita? Paella.

¿Deporte y equipo favorito?

WS: To end up with the interview, let’s go with some short questions:

A city to live? Cape Town.

Club or festival? Depends on the crowd.

Favorite show to date? I don’t really have one.

An underrated artist? SF: Oh… that’s a hard one. I think, looking from a Dutch industry… Albert Neve. Hes absolutely insane. He should be all the way up there.

Favorite Spanish food? Paella.

Favorite sport and team? SF: Field Hockey. The Dutch team.

Best hit of all times in your opinion? (whatever musical genre)There’s so many good music… Maybe at the moment I love Rosalia, she’s insane. I love her energy.

¡Gracias por tu tiempo, Sophie! / Thank you so much for your time, Sophie!
