Wololo Sound: First of all, thank you Ben for taking your time to answer our questions. You are here celebrating the release of ‘Sound Advice (Chapter 2)‘. It is a compilation of eight tracks that dive into different subgenres of Trance music. What is the story behind these series that you started?

Ben Gold: I’ve always wanted to write an artist album but the thought of sitting down in the studio and creating one huge piece of work that’s 15, 16, maybe even 20 tracks long, it just wasn’t appealing to me. If something’s not right creatively for you as an artist and an individual, the worst thing you can do is force it. Just because that’s what everyone else does, doesn’t mean you have to do it. The ‘Sound Advice‘ series may well be a whole bunch of different chapters as I go, who knows, but it’s a format that works really well for me and really gives me creative freedom to produce and evolve and explore sound without being restricted to the idea that you “must” make “x” amount of tracks for it to be an album.

WS: What encouraged you to do a sequel of the compilation? What is new from the first release?

BG: So ‘Chapter 1‘ of ‘Sound Advice‘ was based around the concept of live instruments. Every record had a live instrument in it. For ‘Chapter 2‘ I’ve gone back to the dance floor, with some incredible new talent featuring across the new tracks. It’s definitely a continuation of the theme of the first album but a new chapter, if that makes sense? I’m really happy with ‘Chapter 2‘, there are some absolutely massive singles on it, I’ve already been road testing them out on tour and the reactions have been beyond anything I expected, so it’s looking good, for sure 🙂

WS: Now that all is done, shared with the world, with this new perspective of “finished”, what is your favourite track of this newest compilation?

BG: Oh my goodness, that’s like trying to ask me which is my favourite child!! I know it sounds cheesy but they’re all special to me in different ways. It’s not an album where every single song sounds the same – each track has its own identity and they give me different feelings when I listen to them. Some of them are so euphoric – the Richard Durand collaboration ‘A Thousand Times‘ for example – they still give me goosebumps even after having listened to it so many times. Then there are some huge, big bangers like ‘The City Sleeps Tonight‘ that just keep on blowing up the dance floor every time I play them out, it’s incredible. And then you’ve got the Ruben De Ronde co-production ‘Ghost‘ which is unlike anything else on the album and I think lifts the whole thing to another level in terms of songwriting and depth. They’re all my favourite haha!

WS: Can we expect a ‘Chapter 3‘?

BG: I think it’s definitely in the works, for sure. Anyone that makes music or is involved with any other kind of creative focus will know that the dust never settles for long. Right now, I’m just enjoying the satisfaction of seeing ‘Chapter Two‘ out there and doing what I knew it was capable of doing but in a month or two I can pretty much guarantee that my brain will be ticking over brand new tracks, new production ideas, I’ll be getting inspiration and itching to get back in the studio.

WS: This new release reaffirms your good relationship with Armada. How do you feel about your relationship with the label and Armin Van Buuren towards you and your music?

BG: The Armada guys have been so inspirational to me in terms of pushing myself to the next level as an artist, a producer and a DJ. To have the support of such a massive and successful team who really know what they’re doing on every level of the music industry is absolutely priceless. And it’s not just that they’re great on a professional level – you couldn’t meet a nicer bunch of people. Armin is an amazing figurehead for the label but he’s also just a great guy too and really cares about everyone working there, from artists like me to juniors just starting out at Armada. It’s a family and I’m really happy to be a part of it.

WS: Let’s talk about Futurecode, your new alias together with Omnia. What does this new project mean to you as an artist? What is the most remarkable difference between Ben Gold and Futurecode once you get in the studio or jump up to the stage?

BG: FUTURECODE has been such a great creative project! It actually started around this time last year, at the Electronic Festival Family in Europe. Omnia and I played a back to back set which was so much fun, then the weekend after that we did the same thing at Untold Festival and had the same exact vibe. We decided if we did it again, to only play our own music, make our sets totally unique and completely different from anyone else’s. Then we got booked to play b2b at ASOT 900 – which is huge – and it just made sense for us to come up with an entirely new concept, a major show, all new branding and logos, and so FUTURECODE was born. We create new content all the time for the shows, whether it’s exclusive bootlegs, mash-ups, remixes or original singles, there’s a huge amount of work that we put into making sure fans are getting something new and fresh everything single time we play together. There’s no other way you can experience a FUTURECODE set other than seeing us play together live and I think that’s something really special.

WS: What is your opinion/experience about Spain and the electronic scene here?

BG: It’s always been a great scene in Spain, Spanish crowds know how to party and they expect the DJs to bring the heat in the mix. Any time I can get over there to play it’s always a real privilege, hopefully I’ll be back soon!
