Wololo Sound – ¡Hola Sophie y Tucker!

Wololo Sound – Hi Sophie and Tucker! The fact of having the opportunity to interview one of the most popular duos in the electronic music scene right now is an honor for the Wololo Sound team. For those that still don’t know you, who are you and how did you join together?

Sofi Tukker – We are Sophie & Tucker, two very different people with different influences but who are now best friends. We met in college. Tuck was a house music DJ at the time and Soph was making Brazilian bossa nova style jazz music. We met at an art gallery where we were both performing that night, and Tuck ended up remixing Soph’s song on the spot. We haven’t stopped working together ever since.

WS – We could say you made your step onto international success with ‘Drinkee’, the song that gave you a Grammy nomination. How was all of this to you?

ST – When we wrote ‘Drinkee’, we were still in college. It was the first song we ever released. We definitely didn’t have expectations, we thought it was just a weird art thing that few people would hear. It was a surprise when it got the Grammy nomination, we didn’t even know that was possible! It was surreal.

WS – You have remixed some big artists like Billie Eilish, Katy Perry or Dillon Francis. What would you say is the main difference between a remix for a huge popstar or one focused on a more electronic artist?

ST – We don’t really approach remixes differently. We’re just trying to make something that we love and using the elements of the original song that inspire us!

WS – We must not forget your big step with ‘Best Friend’, that was part of the iPhone X’s advertising campaign. How do you develop a project for such a famous company as Apple? Will we see more collaborations with the Nervo twins?

ST – We made the song for fun not even knowing if we would put it out, but then Apple heard it and offered us the opportunity! It was really fun to make the song because it was just a song about friendship and a collab with friends. We love Mim & Liv and are def open to collabing more!

WS – We are conscious of how popular you are in TikTok as well. How has this platform helped you? Will it become, as an artist, the best way to make your music reach the whole world?

ST – Haha! We don’t feel like we are very popular on Tiktok at all… we have dabbled in it but haven’t always prioritized making videos, even though we do love it when we do it. It’s definitely a good way to share music and seems to be really powerful for a lot of new artists, and in fact we would like to use it more.

WS – Let’s talk about your talent on stage. Your flashy shows combine electronic music with instruments, but you also sing live. How do you combine all of these factors on stage? Is a DJ set easier?

ST – The live show and the DJ set are just super different. The live show probably requires a lot more out of our bodies because we run around the whole stage singing and playing – Soph on the guitar, Tuck on the book tree (our giant tree sculpture that’s like a midi drum controller). Also in the live show, we are playing all original music, whereas in the DJ set we play a wide range of music we love, including ours.

WS – Following the previous question, your style is also characteristic because you sing in different languages. Where do you get these rich cultural influences? What places have inspired you the most at the time of creating music?

ST – Brazil is definitely the place that continues to inspire us the most. The language, the spirit, the natural landscape… all really resonate with us. But as we travel a lot, we are constantly making friends and hearing different rhythms and languages that we end up incorporating and being inspired by.

WS – We recently got the news about your eConcert which will take place next December. What can we expect from this initiative?

ST – We are so excited!!!!! Even though we’ve been livestreaming our DJ set daily, we haven’t played our live show in so long!! We are so excited to return to the stage and really share what we do. But even cooler is that it’s not just a one-way performance. We chose to do this concert with Yoop because they have a technology like no other — we will be able to interact with people WHILE we are performing live. We will see their faces, hear their voices, and be able to choose people to talk to and bring onto the main stage with us — all virtually, with no lag time. We couldn’t be more excited.

ST – Queremos estar evolucionando constantemente…

WS – We would now like to ask you about your future. After releasing an album and having been present in some of the biggest labels of the industry, what are the next steps you would like to take as artists?

ST – We constantly want to be evolving… to be making the best music we can make, and putting on the best show we can. It’s important to us that our music is a part of building a sense of togetherness, so mostly we hope to grow and strengthen our community.
