Estamos hablando del neerlanndés Satori, que con su nuevo álbum ‘Dreamin Colours‘ recién sacado del horno y una visita a Nitsa Club a la vuelta de la esquina, se ha tomado el tiempo de responder a nuestras preguntas.

WOLOLO SOUND: Hola Djordje, gracias por tu tiempo para responder estas preguntas. Hay muchas cosas de las que queremos hablar contigo, pero empecemos con una pregunta simple: ¿cómo estás?
SATORI: ¡Estoy bien! Feliz de que el mundo vuelva a la normalidad y muy listo para un verano intenso pero fantástico.
WOLOLO SOUND: Hello Djordje, thank you for spending some time answering our questions. There are so many things we want to talk about with you, but let’s kick it off with a simple question: how are you?
SATORI: I’m good! I’m happy the world is returning to normal so I’m really ready for an intense but great summer.
WS: Una de las primeras cosas que nos gustaría saber es tu nombre. Estamos a una búsqueda de Google de descubrir el significado budista que se esconde tras él. Pero incluso sin saber eso, podemos sentir esa espiritualidad en tu música. ¿Cuáles fueron las inspiraciones tras Satori cuando empezaste este proyecto?
S: Me inspira muchísimo el budismo zen y el nombre Satori viene de ahí. Es una forma de relajarme y conectar conmigo mismo y me encuentro en un estado similar cuando produzco o actúo con mi música en directo.
WS: One of the first things that we would like to know more about is your name. We are one Google search away from discovering the Buddhist meaning that is hiding behind it. But even without knowing that, we can feel this spirituality in your music. What were the inspirations behind Satori when you started this project?
S: I’m really inspired by zen Buddhism and the name Satori derives from this. It’s a way for me to relax and connect with myself and I find a similar state when I produce or perform my music.
WS: Una de las cosas más curiosas de tu perfil es tu procedencia. Hay un gran contraste entre la frenética escena electrónica holandesa y la paz de tu sonido. ¿Cómo fue el camino para labrarse un nombre en un país con una influencia tan grande de la escena electrónica europea para sonidos tan nómadas como los tuyos?
S: Bueno, fue mi educación, lo bueno de los Países Bajos es que al escena es fuerte. Incluso en la ciudad en la que crecí había mucha actividad con gente como Moodymann, Derrick May y esas leyendas que pinchaban allí con frecuencia. Y después cuando fui a mi primer festival escuché a gente como Villalobos por primera vez. Aquí comenzó mi amor por la música electrónica y a veces siendo que aún es el eje de lo que hago. Siempre he recibido mucho apoyo de productores holandeses, hay muchos de ellos con una mentalidad muy abierta y el público es muy paciente y abierto de mente con nuevos sonidos.
WS: One of the most curious things in your profile is where you come from. There’s a big contrast between the frenetic Dutch Electronic scene and the peacefulness of your sound. How was the path of making a name in a country with such a big influence on the European Electronic Music Scene and with little space for nomad sounds like yours?
S: Well it was my education, the great thing about the Netherlands is the strong scene. Even in the city where I grew up there was so much going on with the likes of Moodymann, Derrick May and those legends would play there regularly. And then later when I went to my first festival I heard people like Villalobos play for the first time. This is where I started my love for electronic music and I feel sometimes it’s still the blueprint of what I do. And I’ve had a lot of support always from dutch promoters, there are so many of them that are forward-thinking and the crowd can be really patient and open-minded for new sounds.
WS: Es el momento de centrarse en el presente. Estás de gira, con fechas importantes en tu calendario como Coachella. ¿Cómo se siente el poder llevar tu proyecto por todo el mundo?
S: ¡Todavía es un sueño! Me hace muy feliz poder presentar lo que me gusta y contar con medios alrededor del mundo para traerlos. Pero a veces es surrealista experimentar las diferentes culturas y localizaciones, aunque la energía y las reacciones siempre son impresionantes.
WS: Now it’s time to focus on the present. You are now on tour, with important dates marked in your calendar such as Coachella. How does it feel to be able to bring your project around the world?
S: It’s still a dream! I’m so happy that I get to present exactly what I like and I get platforms around the world to bring this. But sometimes it’s just surreal to experience the different cultures and locations but the energy and reaction are always amazing.
WS: Próximamente estarás en Barcelona. Nitsa está acogiendo a muchis artistas diferentes este año, pero se te destaca por ser una de las pocas actuaciones en live que veremos. ¿Qué podemos experar de esta experiencia Maktub?
S: Me hace muy feliz poder traer este proyecto que he estado desarrollando durante mucho tiempo en la pandemia y será súper especial. Es mi experiencia audiovisual llamada Maktub. Será una actuación visual creada en directo y creo que tocaré la música en directo también.
WS: Coming up, there’s also Barcelona on the way. Nitsa is welcoming a lot of different artists this year, but you are highlighted for being one of the few live acts we will see. What can we expect from this Maktub experience?
S: I’m so happy to be able to bring this project I’ve been developing it a lot during Covid and it will be super special. It’s my audiovisual experience called Maktub. It will be specially created visual performances and I feel like I’m writing the soundtrack live.
WS: Hemos disfrutado mucho de tu último lanzamiento ‘The Gin Song, junto a MY BABY. ¿Qué nos puedes contar del proceso de creación de este tema?
S: Fue una sorpresa enorme, estaba escuchando Spotify y de repente escuché esta canción que tenía mucho gancho. Inmediatamente fui al estudio y diseccioné la canción para transformarla con mi toque personal. Después, contacté con la banda para ver si podríamos hacerla como colaboración y les encantó. El resultado final es muy especial para mi.
WS: We have been enjoying a lot your latest release ‘The Gin Song’, together with MY BABY. What can you tell us about the process of creation of this tune?
S: This came as a massive surprise, I was just listening to Spotify and all of a sudden I hear this song with such a catchy hook. I immediately went to the studio and dissected the song and morphed it into my personal flavor. Afterward, I contacted the band to see if we could do this collaboration and they loved it as well. The final track is really something special to me.
WS: Eres una persona ocupada, eso seguro. Pero nos gustaría saber: ¿qué es lo próximo? ¿En qué estás trabajando ahora mismo y puedes compartir con nosotros en exclusiva?
S: ¡Mucho ajetreo, la verdad! Actualmente estoy preparado dos grandes proyectos, uno es la residencia semanal en Chinois Ibiza, quiero llevar algo fresco cada semana así que estoy explorando con profundidad mi sesión en live. Y también, estoy en medio de un proceso de escritura con mi banda y preparándome para el tour mundial con ellos que empezará en octubre.
WS: You’re a busy person, that’s for sure. But we would like to know: what’s next? What’s in the making right now that you can share with us in advance?
S: Busy times indeed! I’m currently preparing two major projects, one being a weekly residency at Chinois Ibiza, I want to bring something fresh for every week so I’m exploring more depth in my current live set. And secondly, I’m in the middle of writing music with my band and preparing for the world tour with them that will happen to start in October.
