El DJ y productor australiano Marcus Santoro es el protagonista de la tercera entrevista de nuestra temporada. Pasando por una segunda cuarentena en su ciudad, Melbourne, nos habla sobre su relación con grandes sellos discográficos y artistas como Armin van Buuren (Armada), Axwell (Axtone) y Nicky Romero (Protocol); cómo surgió su peculiar remix a Fangoria, y futuros lanzamientos, entre otros asuntos.

Wololo Sound: ¡Hola, Marcus! Es un placer para nosotros poder entrevistarte. En primer lugar, esperamos que tú y tus familiares estéis bien en estos extraños momentos. Sabemos que en algunos lugares de Australia habéis tenido que someteros a un segundo confinamiento. En tu caso, ¿cómo estás llevando la situación? ¿Te ha generado más bloqueos creativos de lo habitual o estás pudiendo trabajar a gusto?
Marcus Santoro: ¡Hola, chicos! Gracias por invitarme, es un placer. Igualmente, espero que todo el mundo se encuentre lo mejor posible durante estos tiempos tan impredecibles. Soy de Melbourne y actualmente estamos en la Fase 4 de confinamiento y ha sido increíblemente difícil por momentos en los que veíamos que le resto de Australia estaba casi abierta al completo. Aunque estoy siendo optimista, la inspiración para buscar la necesidad de hacer música fue dura al principio, ¡pero últimamente he estado trabajando sin parar, terminando un montón de canciones y estoy impaciente por enseñársela al público lo antes posible!
Wololo Sound: Hi, Marcus! It is a pleasure to have you with us. First of all, we hope you and your relatives are doing well in these odd times. We know in some places from Australia you have had a second lockdown. In your case, how are you dealing with this situation? Has it caused you more creative blocks or are you able to work comfortably?
Marcus Santoro: Hey, guys! Thanks for having me, it’s a pleasure. Likewise, I hope everyone is staying as safe as they can during these super unpredictable times. I’m from Melbourne and we are currently in a Stage 4 lockdown which has been incredibly difficult at times whilst seeing the rest of Australia almost all opened up. I’m being optimistic though… The inspiration to find the need to write music was hard at first, but lately I’ve been working non-stop on music getting loads done and I’m looking forward to getting these songs out to the people ASAP!
WS: Después de estar siguiendo tu recorrido durante varios años, hemos podido observar que 2020 está siendo uno de tus años con más lanzamientos, con más de 10 temas o remixes publicados a estas alturas. ¿Cuáles dirías que son las claves para mantener un ritmo de trabajo y programación tan altos?
MS: ¡Sin duda! 2020 ha demostrado ser un año remarcable para mi programación de lanzamientos y, definitivamente, creo que el efecto de la pandemia ha sido un gran factor a la hora de hacerlo posible. Por desgracia, sin la posibilidad de hacer tours, pensé que, en lugar de quedarme sentado sin hacer nada, era mejor ponerme las pilas con la música. Junto a mi equipo, hemos encontrado los proyectos adecuados para mí y no podría estar más contento con cómo está sonando todo ahora mismo. Creo que la clave para un ritmo de trabajo exitoso es planificar exactamente lo que quieres/necesitas trabajar y aferrarte a ello.
WS: After having followed your career for years, we have been able to see that 2020 is being one of the years you have been releasing the most, with more than 10 tracks or remixes released so far. Which would you say that are the keys to keep such a high rate of working and scheduling?
MS: Definitely! 2020 has proven to be a remarkable year for my release schedule and I definitely think the effect of the pandemic has been a big factor in making that happen. Unfortunately, with no ability to tour, I thought rather than sit around and do nothing, let’s go hard with music and together with my team, we’ve found the right projects for me and I couldn’t be happier with how it’s all sounding right now. I think the key to successful workflow is planning exactly what you want/need to work on and sticking to it.
WS: Sabiendo esto, imaginamos que los siguientes temas están a la vuelta de la esquina… ¿Alguna exclusiva que puedas dejarnos sobre dónde los lanzarás o los artistas con los que colaborarás?
MS: ¡Tengo un montón de material programado de aquí a finales de noviembre! Voy a lanzar un remix para mi buen amigo Enzo Ingrosso en septiembre y hay una colaboración muy emocionante que saldrá finalmente en noviembre en la que hemos estado trabajando como uña y carne durante dos años. También estoy trabajando en un EP con el que estoy muy entusiasmado, donde exploraré una dirección diferente a la de mis lanzamientos recientes. ¡Creo que es todo música muy fresca y evolucionada!
WS: Knowing this, we suppose that the next tracks are right around the corner… Any exclusives that you can tell us about where are you going to release them or the artists you are going to collab with?
MS: There’s lots of material scheduled in from now up until late November! I’m releasing a remix for my good friend Enzo Ingrosso in September and there’s a very exciting collaboration that will finally be released in November which we’ve been working on for a better half of 2 years. I also have an EP in the works which I’m very excited about where I’ll be exploring a different direction than my recent releases, it’s all very fresh and forward-thinking music I believe!
WS: Los géneros más habituales tanto en tus producciones como en tus sesiones son el progressive house y el trance, por los que llevas muchísimos años apostando mientras que otros artistas parecen haberse bajado del barco porque ya no están de moda. ¿Cuál es tu visión sobre el estado actual de estos estilos y qué es lo que te hace seguir apostando por ellos?
MS: Creo que el motivo de que me haya mantenido firme a ese sonido durante la mayor parte de mi carrera es porque he ido encontrando maneras de mantenerlo interesante/emocionante. Últimamente he estado produciendo un montón de progressive house más profundo/melancólico, pero sigo manteniendo ese aspecto melódico entre mi música y eso es lo que me mantiene ahí. Para mí, esos géneros son de los que surge la música electrónica más melódica con los que me puedo identificar a nivel personal. Recuerdo estar con Axwell en Road to Ultra de Melbourne en 2018 y hablar sobre cómo mantener el sonido vivo, y él dijo que simplemente hay que encontrar algo diferente y fresco; el resto sigue sólo.
WS: The most common genres both in your productions and sets are progressive house and trance, which you’ve being betting for for many years while other artists seem to have got off the boat as they aren’t trendy anymore. How do you see the current stage of these genres and what makes you keep betting for them?
MS: I think the reason why I’ve stayed true to that sound for most of my career is because I’ve been finding ways to keep it interesting/exciting. Lately I have been writing a lot deeper/moodier progressive house but still keeping that melodic aspect within my music and that’s what keeps me there. For me, those genres are where most melodic electronic music stems from and it’s what I can relate to on a personal level. I remember talking to Axwell at Road to Ultra in Melbourne in 2018 and we were talking about how to keep the sound alive and he said you just need to find something different and fresh; the rest will follow.
WS: Mantienes una buena relación con grades sellos discográficos como Armada, Axtone o Protocol, en los que cuentas con varios lanzamientos recientes. ¿Cómo lograste ponerte en contacto con referentes como Armin van Buuren, Axwell y Nicky Romero para que escuchasen tu música y quisieran firmarla? ¿Puedes hablarnos sobre tus encuentros en persona con ellos?
MS: Todavía me parece surrealista saber que tengo una especie de conexión personal con estos ídolos míos. Nunca pensé que llegaría el día, siempre lo vi como un sueño que nunca se haría realidad. Al final, simplemente probé suerte como el resto de productores y DJs. Envié un email de demo a Armin, pinchó unas cuantas canciones mías en ASOT y, cuando vino a Australia para el evento Istoria, le conocí y mantuvimos el contacto.
En 2017 fui a ADE (Amsterdam Dance Event) por primera vez y me presentaron al equipo de Axtone cuando fui a una fiesta. Nos sentamos, tuvimos una reunión y seguí desarrollando mi relación con el sello, que de repente me permitió enviarle música directamente a Axwell.
El contacto con Protocol/Nicky fue a través de mi manager en aquel entonces, quien vino a mí con la oportunidad de remezclar el tema ‘My Way’ de Nicky Romero (¡acaba de alcanzar casi 6 millones de reproducciones!). A partir de ese momento, seguí enviando demos al sello y, de nuevo, desarrollando mi relación con ellos y ahora puedo decir orgullosamente que soy parte de la familia de Protocol. Simplemente se necesita tiempo, determinación y pasión. Si tienes todo eso, puedes lograr cualquier cosa.
WS: You have a good relationship with great music labels such as Armada, Axtone or Protocol, in which you have many recent releases. How did you manage to get in touch with role models like Armin van Buuren, Axwell and Nicky Romero so they could hear your music and wanted to sign it? Can you tell us about your meetings with them?
MS: It’s still surreal knowing that I have a some-what personal connection with these idols of mine now. I never thought I’d see the day, it always felt like a dream to me that wouldn’t come true. In all, I simply just tried my luck like the rest of aspiring producers & DJs. I had a demo email that I sent music to Armin and he played a few of my songs on ASOT, and then when he came to Australia for the event Istoria, I met him and we stayed in contact.
Back in 2017 I attended ADE (Amsterdam Dance Event) for the first time and I happened to be introduced to the team at Axtone whilst attending a party, from there we sat down – had a meeting and I kept on developing my relationship with the label, which eventually led me to sending music directly to Axwell.
How I came into contact with Protocol / Nicky was via my manager at the time who came to me with an opportunity to remix Nicky Romero’s single ‘My Way’ (which has now hit almost 6 million streams!). From there I kept sending demos to the label and again developed my relationship with them and now I can proudly say that I’m part of that Protocol family. It just takes time, determination and passion. If you have all those behind you, you can do anything.
WS: Somos un medio español y nos vemos obligados a preguntarte por el remix que hiciste para ‘De todo y de nada’ de Fangoria, una banda icónica de nuestro país. Cuéntanos la historia que hay detrás de esta canción, ya que imaginamos que serían desconocidos para ti y a nosotros nos pilló totalmente por sorpresa, ¡pero el resultado nos encanta!
MS: Fue bastante aleatorio, ¡pero aun así fue emocionante! Warner Music España contactó con mi manager, él me pasó la oferta de remezclar a Fangoria y, tras discutirlo, sentimos que podría ser una idea muy guay versionar una canción con una letra completamente extranjera, ya que nunca había hecho algo así. ¡Me alegra que acabara haciéndolo, ya que horas después del lanzamiento se convirtió en el número 1 de las listas dance de iTunes en España!
WS: We are a Spanish press media so we feel compelled to ask you about the remix you made of Fangoria’s ‘De todo y de nada’, an iconic band from our country. Tell us the story behind this remix, as we can imagine that they were strangers for you and it was a huge surprise for us, but we love the result!
MS: It was pretty random, yet exciting! Warner Music Spain approached my manager, who forwarded me the offer to remix Fangoria and after discussing it we felt it could be a cool idea to remix a song with completely foreign lyrics as it was something I hadn’t done before. I’m glad I ended up doing it, as 24 hours after releasing it was the #1 song on the iTunes dance charts in Spain!
WS: Y, al igual que te preguntamos por nuestro país, queremos preguntarte por el tuyo. Tenéis artistas muy talentosos y con un recorrido increíble, como RÜFÜS DU SOL, Dirty South o Flume, entre otros muchos. ¿Podrías decirnos cuáles crees que son los jóvenes que algún día estarán entre estas leyendas?
MS: Todos esos artistas son grandes inspiraciones para mí, sobre todo Dirty South… ya que él fue la razón principal de que quisiera empezar a hacer música. Hay un montón de talento increíble que está saliendo de Australia y que creo que le abrirán el camino a la siguiente generación… WILL K, EDDIE, JaySounds, Cassian, Lastlings, Dave Winnel, Jleo y muchos más.
WS: And as we ask you about our country, we want to ask you about yours as well. You have many talented artists with an incredible path, like RÜFÜS DU SOL, Dirty South or Flume, among many others. Could you tell us who do you think that are the young ones that will be among these legends in the future?
MS: All of those artists are big inspirations to me, Dirty South specifically, as he was the main reason why I wanted to start writing music. There’s lots of incredibly talent that’s coming out of Australia, which I believe will pave the way for the next generation… WILL K, EDDIE, JaySounds, Cassian, Lastlings, Dave Winnel, Jleo and heaps more.

WS: Tu objetivo como artista es… – MS: Inspirar a la gente, para que sepan que todos nosotros somos capaces de cumplir nuestros sueños y aspiraciones. Quiero darle a la gente esperanza de que cualquier cosa puede pasar y además hacerles felices. Al final del día, eso es lo que realmente importa. La música de otros artistas ha cambiado mi vida de formas que no puedo explicar, y quiero ser capaz de devolver el favor.

Other artists’ music has changed my life in ways I can’t explain, and I want to be able to return the favor.
