Ummet Ozcan, holandés de ascendencia turca, comenzó su carrera en 2006 con el Trance como protagonista, estilo que poco a poco dejó de lado para centrarse principalmente en Electro-House y Big Room. El productor cuenta con colaboraciones con W&W, R3hab, NERVO, Calvin Harris y un largo etcétera, aunque sus grandes éxitos han llegado yendo de la mano de Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike.
Hoy entrevistamos a este artista y le preguntamos por su relación con los belgas, su nuevo sello OZ Records, y muchas cosas más. ¡Conozcamos un poco más a Ummet Ozcan!
WS: En primer lugar, muchas gracias por atender a nuestras preguntas. Primeramente vamos a presentarte un poco más para el público español. ¿Quien es y cuales son las influencias de Ummet Ozcan? ¿Algo que no podamos encontrar en Wikipedia sobre tus inicios o de tu carrera?
Ummet Ozcan: Ummet Ozcan es un productor y DJ con una gran pasión por la música electrónica. Tiempo atrás, cuando tenía 14 años descubrí lo divertido que podía ser crear música. Supongo que la chispa se encendió ahí y todavía lo disfruto mucho. Sinceramente, nunca miro mi Wikipedia así que ni idea de si está completo o no.
WS: First of all, thank you very much for attending us. First we will present you a little bit more for the Spanish public. Who is Ummet Ozcan and what influenced you the most? Is there anything not included in sites like Wikipedia about your beginnings or your career?
Ummet Ozcan: Ummet Ozcan is a producer and Dj with a big passion for dance music. Back in the days when I was 14 years old I discovered that making music could be great fun. I guess it sparked there and I am still enjoying it very much. I honestly never look at my Wikipedia, so not a clue if it is complete or not.
WS: Has trabajado varias veces con Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike. ¿Que tal es la relación con los hermanos?
Ummet Ozcan: Somos buenos amigos y siempre disfruto estando con ellos. Son muy determinados y apasionados con su música. Supongo que esa es la actitud que lleva al éxito. ¡Todo trabajo tiene su recompensa!
WS: You have worked several times with Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike. How is the relationship with the brothers?
Ummet Ozcan: We are good friends and it always great hanging out with them. They are very determined and passionate about their music. I guess that’s the right attitude to be successful. Work hard, play hard!
WS: Con ellos trabajaste en ‘The Hum’, una de la canciones más sonadas de la historia del Big Room. ¿Como fue la producción de este tema? ¿De quien fue la idea, o la inspiración, de basarse en el frame de la película ‘Wolf Of Wall Street’ para este tema?
Ummet Ozcan: Ambos coincidimos en que este himno podría encajar muy bien con un tema guay. El cántico tiene una especie de magia y es muy enérgico. Fue un proyecto bastante grande con la locura de vídeo que grabamos en LA. Podemos recordarlo como algo extraordinario: el vídeo, la canción, la posición en los charts… ¡Misión cumplida! 🙂
WS: With them you worked on ‘The Hum’, one of the most famous songs in the history of the Big Room. How was the production of this track? Who had the idea or inspiration of relying on the frame of the movie ‘Wolf Of Wall Street’?
Ummet Ozcan: We both coincidentally figured out that this anthem would be a great fit for a cool track. The chant has a kind of magic and is very energetic. It was quite a project with this crazy video we shot in LA. We can look back at something extraordinary, the video, the song, the chart positions. Mission accomplished 🙂
WS: Seguimos hablando de Big Room. No es un secreto que el género, ya no es lo que era en 2013. ¿Crees que hubo una masificación de este estilo? ¿Consideras que puede volver a la primera línea en unos años?
Ummet Ozcan: No me siento enlazado al big room pero me gusta porque funciona muy bien en festivales. Los géneros van y vienen, masificados o no, y todo me gusta. Tan solo hago y pincho la música que me gusta en ese momento y espacio concretos 🙂 Y cuando quiero probar algo diferente tan solo lo hago, no vivo en una caja.
WS: Let’s keep talking about the big room. It is not a secret that this genre is not like it was on 2013 anymore. Do you think there was a massification of big room? Do you think you can go back to the first line in a few years?
Ummet Ozcan: I am not bound to big room, but I have an appetite for it as it always works great at the festivals. Genre’s come and go, massification or not, all good with me. I just make and play the music I love at a certain point in time and space 🙂 And when I want to try something else I just do it, I am not living in a box.
WS: ¿Te planteas a corto o medio plazo la producción de un álbum completo?
Ummet Ozcan: Lo estoy pensando, pero todavía no me he aclarado. Eso es algo para el futuro.
WS: Are you considering about working on a complete album in a short or medium term?
Ummet Ozcan: I am considering it, but haven’t made up my mind yet. That’s something for the future.
WS: Hablemos un poco de España. No te hemos visto demasiadas veces en nuestro país. ¿Hay algún evento, sala o festival que te llame especialmente la atención y donde te gustaría actuar?
Ummet Ozcan: ¡He pinchado en algunos muy buenos ya! Medusa, Fallas de Valencia, Electromar y docenas de bolos en Ibiza. Me han hablado muy bien del ambiente de A Summer Story y Barcelona Beach Festival, así que me encantaría pinchar ahí 🙂
WS: Let’s talk a bit about Spain. We haven’t seen you pretty much in our country. ¿Is there any event, festival or club where you would like to perform?
Ummet Ozcan: I have played a few nice ones actually! Medusa, Fallas Valencia, Electromar and dozens of Ibiza bookings. I heard about the good vibes at A Summer Story and Barcelona Beach Festival, so I might be up for that 🙂
WS: ¿Qué te motivó a lanzar tu propio sello? ¿Fue una iniciativa tuya o Spinnin’ Records te lo propuso?
Ummet Ozcan: Después de casi 10 años lanzando en Spinnin Records, sentía la necesidad de establecer algo más personal. Es por ello que comencé OZ Records. Será más fácil organizar mis lanzamientos, así que el resultado probablemente será mejor. En cuanto al lado creativo de las cosas, Spinnin siempre ha sido muy cooperativo, pero supongo que ahora tengo incluso más libertad para elegir mi propio rumbo. Sin embargo la cooperación con Spinnin seguirá siendo muy cercana ya que es un trabajo en equipo conjunto. Tan solo intentamos lanzar buenos temas que pueden valerlo, así que hay bastante espacio para marcar la diferencia.
WS: What motivated you to launch your own label? Did you decide to take the initiative or was Spinnin’ Records who proposed it to you?
Ummet Ozcan: After almost 10 years of releases on Spinnin Records I felt the need to establish something more personal. That’s why we’ve started OZ Records. It will become easier to schedule my releases, so the output will probably increase. Regarding the creative side of things Spinnin has always been very cooperative, but I guess now I’ve got even more freedom to choose my own direction. However the cooperation with Spinnin will remain very close as it’s a joint team effort. We just try to release good tracks that generally stand out, there is plenty of room to make a difference with it.
WS: ¿Qué artistas encontraremos próximamente en OZ Records en los lanzamientos a corto plazo?
Ummet Ozcan: En un futuro cercano queremos lanzar varios temas de Ummet Ozcan primero y después de eso lanzar material de otros artistas, así que estad atentos.
WS: What artists will we find next on OZ Records in the short-term releases?
Ummet Ozcan: For the near future we are looking to release a few new Ummet Ozcan records first and after that we will take on material from other artists. So keep an eye out for it.
WS: ¿Cuál es tu intención con OZ Records? A parte de contener tu sonido clásico, ‘Krypton’ suena más alejado de la escena mainstream. ¿Enfocarás al sello a determinados géneros?
Ummet Ozcan: Me gustan varios estilos y géneros así que podéis esperar lanzamientos muy diferentes, seguro.
WS: What is your intention with OZ Records? Besides containing your most classic sound, ‘Krypton’ sounds farthest from the mainstream scene. Will you focus the label on certain genres?
Ummet Ozcan: I like various styles and genre’s so expect some different releases for sure.
WS: Además de los nuevos hits que lleguen en OZ, ¿en que otros proyectos o colaboraciones estás trabajando?
Ummet Ozcan: Bueno, ¡hace poco lancé mi nuevo single ‘Change My Heart’ en Spinnin Records! También planeo hacer sesiones de estudio algo más creativas con cantautores, vocalistas y músicos. Solo con gente que sea experta en lo suyo. Es un poco acercarse a algo nuevo, lo cual me encanta. Hay mucho talento ahí fuera. También en 2018 veremos algunas colaboraciones con artistas ya establecidos, pero eso aún es secreto.
WS: In addition to the next releases in OZ, which other projects or collaborations are you currently working on?
Ummet Ozcan: Well, I recently released my new single ‘Change My Heart’ on Spinnin’ Records! I am also planning to do more creative studio sessions with songwriters, vocalists, and musicians. Just with people who are experts in their fields. It’s a bit of new approach, which I definitely like. There is so much talent out there. Also 2018 will see a few collabs with established artists, but that remains to be secret as of yet.
