Wololo Sound: Me gustaría empezar mirando hacia vuestros orígenes. Quien no os conozca de hace años quizá se sorprenda al saber que empezasteis produciendo techno, ¿creéis que el haber tocado diferentes géneros os ayuda a la hora de lograr un sonido diferente?
Zonderling: Sí, creemos que esto marca una gran diferencia. Al final del día cuando intentas producir cierto tipo de canciones, siempre estás usando tus propias técnicas y enfoques. A raíz de ello, obtienes sonidos diferentes cuando las técnicas que usas provienen de diferentes géneros que has producido.
Wololo Sound: I would like to start talking about your origins. People who didn’t know Zonderling a few years ago, maybe are a little bit surprised when they realized that you started as Techno artists. Do you think that having produced different genres is an hability when you are trying to produce something new and fresh?
Zonderling: Yes, we think it makes a big difference. At the end of the day, when you try to write a certain kind of track, you’re always doing it using your own techniques and approach. This will result in a different kind of sound when the techniques you’re using come from having produced different genres.
Wololo Sound: Sois holandeses, ¿qué creéis que tiene la escena holandesa para que triunfen tantos DJs de allí?
Zonderling: La escena aquí en Holanda está muy separada de la escena fuera de Holanda, o al menos lo solía estar. Hoy en día, está todo un poco mas sobrepuesto. Es decir, los DJs que tienen éxito fuera de Holanda lo tienen aquí. Esto no siempre ha sido así. A parte de eso no hay ninguna otra diferencia obvia entre Holanda y otros países.
Wololo Sound: Both of you are from Netherlands and a lot of top DJs are from your country. What are the differences between Netherland’s scene and the other countries?
Zonderling: The scene here in The Netherlands is very separated from the scene outside of it. Or at least, it used to be. Nowadays it’s overlapping a lot more, meaning that dutch dj’s that are succesful somewhere else will likely also have some success here. That wasn’t always the case. Other than that there is no obvious differenc e between The Netherlands and other countries.
Wololo Sound: Pertenecéis a la escena mainstream de la música electrónica y en ella muchas veces se tiende a imitar sonidos que triunfan y no arriesgar con las producciones, ¿cómo se logra el equilibrio entre hacer algo que venda discos y que a la vez sea original?
Zonderling: Esto es muy difícil actualmente porque tienes que decidirlo muy pronto en el proceso de producción. No puedes cambiar un tema una vez ya ha sido publicado y tienes que meterte en la promo, hacer el videoclip… sin saber si la gente aceptará las decisiones que has tomado. ¡Asusta un poco!
Wololo Sound: Zonderling is a mainstream duo of djs and, in the mainstream scene, DJs sometimes copy or imitate the sounds that are working well and they don’t take risks with their productions. How do you find the balance between making something mainstream that works on the charts and finding a new and original sound?
Zonderling: This is very hard actually. Because you have to decide this early on in the production process. You can’t change a record once it has been released, so you go into promo and making a video etc without knowing if people will accept certain choices you’ve made. That’s kinda scary!
Wololo Sound: Dentro de dicha escena, ¿qué productores os inspiran más a la hora de producir?

Wololo Sound: Talking about that, what are the DJs that you think that make good stuff and inspire to you to make new music?
Zonderling: Eric Prydz, Don Diablo, Oliver Heldens, Stephan Bodzin and Jon Hopkins.
Wololo Sound: Pertenecéis a Spinnin’ Records, ¿cómo de importante es trabajar para un gigante como Spinnin’ a la hora de crecer como artista?
Zonderling: Definitivamente, sí. Hay mucha gente que hace música buena hoy en día y es muy difícil destacar. Si empiezas tu carrera trabajando en un sello potente como Spinnin’, tienes ventaja sobre todos aquellos que no están en un sello de este nivel.
Wololo Sound: You’ve worked with Spinnin Records, can you tell us your experience in such a big label like that? Is it easier to grow as an artist when you release your music at Spinnin Records?
Zonderling: Definitely. There are so many people making good music nowadays that it is really hard to get noticed. If you can start your career working with a big label, like Spinnin’, you have a major advantage over all those that don’t.
Wololo Sound: Algunos artistas como Martin Garrix, han apostado por crear un sello propio una vez que ya se habían ganado popularidad, ¿contempláis hacer eso en un futuro?
Zonderling: Actualmente no hay planes de crear nuestro propio sello, es demasiado pronto para pensar en ello.
Wololo Sound: Some artists have worked on the creation of their own labels as they’ve become more popular on electronic music scene. Are you planning to create your own one?
Zonderling: There are currently no plans, something like that it a bit early for our career if you ask us.
Wololo Sound: Recientemente habéis visitado nuestro país, España, ¿qué opináis de España y de sus clubes, festivales y DJs?
Zonderling: Tenemos muy buenos recuerdos en España. Pinchamos en Valencia un par de veces y una en Barcelona, en Opium. Uno de mis shows en club favoritos de lejos. Jaap también pinchó tres veces en Ushuaia Ibiza pero escuchamos que Ibiza no es considerada como “España” (risas).
Wololo Sound: You recently played at out country, Spain. Can you tell us your thoughts about the electronic music scene (club, DJs and festivals) here from your experience?
Zonderling: We had some good experiences in Spain, played in Valencia twice and one time in Barcelona. Played there at Opium. One of my favorite club shows so far. Jaap also played three times at Ushuaia Ibiza but heared that party-wise Ibiza is not looked at as being ‘Spain’ haha
Wololo Sound: Hace unos meses habéis posteado una foto en el estudio con Nicky Romero, ¿se viene una colaboración en los próximos meses?
Zonderling: De momento no. Jaap estuvo en su estudio como invitado en su programa de radio junto a Lost Frequencies para hablar de nuestra colaboración ‘Crazy‘.
Wololo Sound: Some months ago you shared a pic at your social networks at the studio with Nicky Romero. There will be a collab within the next months?
Zonderling: Not at the moment. Jaap was there just as a guest in Nicky’s radio studio together with Lost Frequencies to talk about our collaboration ‘Crazy’.
Wololo Sound: ¿Qué podemos esperar de vosotros los próximos meses?
Zonderling: Estamos trabajando en algunas nuevas canciones más enfocadas para club y un nuevo remix. No podemos decir nada más de momento.
Wololo Sound: What can we spect about Zonderling from here to the end of the year?
Zonderling: We’re currently working on some new tracks that are more for the club and a new remix. Can’t tell you anything just yet!
