En 2017 entrevistamos por primera vez a Sam Feldt. Este artista holandés fue toda una revelación con su sonido fresco que lo llevó a pinchar en grandes festivales por todo el mundo. Ahora, tres años después, nos volvemos a sentar con Sam para una nueva entrevista en el que nos cuenta su experiencia en los eventos de la nueva normalidad, sus planes de futuro o las tendencias actuales de la música electrónica. Sin más dilación, os dejamos con la entrevista a Sam Feldt.
Wololo Sound: ¡Hola Sam! Lo primero de todo, muchas gracias por atendernos de nuevo. La vida del DJ ha cambiado mucho en los últimos meses. En redes sociales hemos visto tu primer show post covid en Het Strand van 2020. ¿Cómo ha sido la experiencia? ¿Crees que el futuro pasa por eventos de ese estilo o que pronto volveremos a la normalidad?
Sam Feldt:Creo que realmente depende de la rapidez con la que podamos controlar el virus, y potencialmente distribuir una vacuna que funcione y sea 100% segura. Si ese fuera el caso, creo que tendríamos eventos normales de nuevo a mediados de 2021. Pero hasta entonces, tenemos que trabajar con lo que es posible y está permitido, ¡y creo que Het Strand van 2020 hizo un gran trabajo! Aunque todo el mundo tuvo que permanecer sentado y manteniendo la distancia social, creo que el ambiente fue muy bueno y pienso que a todo el mundo le encantó la oportunidad de asistir a un espectáculo de EDM después de estar tanto tiempo en cuarentena.
Wololo Sound: Hi Sam! First of all, thank you very much for having us again. DJ’s life has changed a lot in the last few months. On your social media we have seen your first post-COVID show on Het Strand van 2020. How has the experience been? Do you think the future is in events like that one or will we soon return to normality?
Sam Feldt: I think it really depends on how fast we are able to control the virus, and potentially distribute a vaccine that works and is 100% safe. If that is the case, I think we will see normal shows happening again somewhere in the middle of 2021. But until then, we have to work with what’s possible and allowed, and I think Het Strand van 2020 did a great job! Even though everybody had to stay seated and socially distant, I think the vibe was really good and I think everybody loved the opportunity to attend an EDM show after quarantining for so long.
WS: En cuanto a esta clase de eventos con gente sentada o en pequeñas parcelas, ¿crees que los subgéneros del house son más idóneos que otros estilos más “duros” como el big room, psy-trance o hard, que parecen más hechos para festivales de gran formato?
SF: Creo que si eres un gran fan de un género específico, irás a los eventos de todas formas. He visto a tíos como Headhunterz pinchar en festivales de hardstyle y todo el mundo parecía pasárselo en grande. Pero sí, creo que algunos géneros coinciden con el rollo de estar todos sentados mejor que otros. Además, tener una buena letra en los temas que tocas ayuda mucho, ya que cantar es casi lo único que puede hacer el público para demostrarte que lo están pasando bien, ¡jaja!
WS: Regarding this kind of events with people sitting down or in small plots, do you think that the subgenres of house are more suitable than other “harder” styles such as big room, psy-trance or hardstyle, which seem more suitable for big festivals?
SF: I think if you are a big fan of a specific genre, you will go see these shows regardless. I’ve seen guys like Headhunterz play sit-down hardstyle festivals and everybody seemed to have a great time! But yeah, I do believe some genres match the seated vibe better than others. Also having great vocals in the tracks you play helps a lot since singing along is pretty much the only thing the crowd can do to show you they are enjoying themselves, haha!
WS: En relación a esta situación, tu verano está siendo atípico sin shows. ¿En qué ha cambiado la vida de un DJ? ¿Cómo estás viviendo estos meses?
SF: Bueno, lancé mi propio sello Heartfeldt Records en marzo de este año, justo cuando la pandemia se estaba desarrollando. Así que para mí, eso ha ocupado gran parte de mi tiempo. Contratando nuevos artistas, aportando ideas de marketing y, por supuesto, produciendo nueva música de Sam Feldt. Mi empresa de tecnología Fangage también está preparando un gran relanzamiento en octubre, así que también dedico bastante tiempo a eso.
WS: In relation to this situation, your summer is being atypical without shows. How has the DJ life changed? How are you living these months?
SF: Well, I launched my own label Heartfeldt Records in March of this year, just as the pandemic was unfolding. So for me, that has taken up a lot of my time. Signing new artists, coming up with crazy marketing ideas and of course producing new Sam Feldt music. My tech start-up Fangage is also in the process of preparing a big re-launch in October, so I spend quite some time on that as well.
WS: Ese ritmo de vida que solías vivir con tantos shows dejaba poco tiempo a la producción. ¿Crees que ahora habrá una sobresaturación en cuando a lanzamientos? ¿Tienes mucha música preparada para lanzar?
SF: Sí, tengo unas 20 pistas en las que estoy trabajando ahora mismo. Estoy considerando hacer otro álbum el año que viene para sacar todo eso. No creo que el mercado esté sobresaturado. Sí, se están lanzando muchos temas, pero los buenos seguirán siendo el centro de atención.
WS: That lifestyle that you used to have with so many shows left little time for production. Do you think that now there will be an oversaturation in terms of releases? Do you have a lot of music ready to release?
SF: Yep, I think I have about 20 tracks that I am working on right now. I am contemplating doing another album next year to get that all out. I don’t think the market is oversaturated – yes, a lot of tracks are being released but the good ones will still make it into the spotlight.
WS: En alguna de tus últimas colaboraciones te hemos visto acercarte a géneros como el slap house, un género muy de moda en plataformas como Tik Tok. ¿Cuál es tu opinión del género? ¿Crees que se asentará en el futuro?
SF: Como con cada tendencia, creo que seguiremos viendo elementos e influencias de ella en la música electrónica en los próximos años. Creo que es importante ser creativos y asegurarnos de que no nos sentimos demasiado cómodos lanzando el mismo estilo de música y/o el mismo drop todo el tiempo.
WS: In some of your latest collaborations we have seen you approaching genres like slap house, a very fashionable genre on platforms like Tik Tok. What is your opinion on the genre? Do you think it will settle down in the future?
SF: As with every trend, I think we will continue to see elements and influences of it in electronic music in the next couple of years. I do think it’s important to stay creative and make sure that we don’t get too comfortable releasing the same style of music and/or drop all the time.
WS: En 2017 pudimos disfrutar de 2 álbumes tuyos. ¿Veremos un nuevo álbum de Sam Feldt próximamente?
SF: ¡Posiblemente!
WS: In 2017 we were able to enjoy two of your albums. Will we get a new Sam Feldt album soon?
SF: Possibly!
WS: Ya para acabar, en España recordamos especialmente tu paso por el Daydream Barcelona en 2018. Te tocaba actuar en un buen horario y debido a problemas ajenos, te tocó abrir el festival. Lejos de enfadarte y negarte a tocar tan pronto, te lo tomaste con humor y diste lo mejor de ti. ¿Cómo fue esa experiencia? ¿Algún mensaje para el público español?
SF: ¡Estaba feliz de que todavía pudiéramos actuar! Todo era muy incierto debido a las condiciones climáticas y traje a toda la banda conmigo, ¡hubiera sido una pena cancelarlo, jaja! El único mensaje que tengo es que no puedo esperar a volver a España y a Barcelona en particular. ¡Os quiero y España es definitivamente uno de mis países favoritos para tocar!
WS: To conclude, in Spain we especially remember your visit to Daydream Barcelona in 2018. You were about to perform at a good time and due to problems of other artists, you had to open the festival. Far from getting angry and refusing to play so soon, you had a good mood and gave your best. How was that experience? Any message for the Spanish audience?
SF: I was just happy we could still play! It was very uncertain due to the weather conditions and I brought the whole live band with me which would have been a shame to cancel, haha! The only message I have is that I can’t wait to come back to Spain and Barcelona in particular. I love you and Spain is definitely one of my favorite countries to play in!
