Sus ritmos frescos y bailables le han convertido en uno de los artistas más destacados de la familia de Toolroom Records, un sello que le ha visto nacer y crecer. Nos hemos sentado a charlar con este productor y dj para traeros esta exclusiva entrevista a KC Lights para Wololo Sound
WS – ¡Muchas gracias por atender a nuestro medio en esta exclusiva entrevista a KC Lights para España! Antes de nada vamos a pedirte que describas rapidamente tu carrera como artista. ¿Quién es KC Lights?
KC: Soy un productor, DJ y músico de Glasgow, Escocia. La música ha sido una parte muy importante de mi vida desde que tengo uso de memoria, desde siendo un niño aprendiendo a tocar el saxofón a pinchar a lo largo de todo el mundo, es lo que siempre he querido hacer y ya no hay vuelta atrás.
WS: Thank you very much for attending our Spanish magazine in this exclusive interview! First of all, we are going to ask you to describe your career as an artist. Who is KC Lights?
KC: I am a producer, DJ & Musician from Glasgow, Scotland. Music has been such a significant part of my life for as long as I can remember, from a kid learning to play the saxophone to now DJing all over the world, it’s what I always wanted to do with my life and I’m not looking back now.
WS: Vamos a hablar sobre tu música. Resides en UK, donde el house y el tech-house está ganando terreno año tras año con artistas como Camelphat, Illyus & Barrientos o KC Lights. ¿En qué momento crees que se encuentra tu género y tu música?
KC: Creo que es importante tomar influencias de tu alrededor y es genial ver a la música dance en el Reino Unido en semejante estado de forma, pero intento no pensar de la música que hago como si perteneciera a algún género. Cuando estoy en el estudio tan solo escribo música que me gusta y que significa algo para mí.
WS – Let’s talk about your music. You reside in the UK, where house music and tech-house music are gaining ground every year with artists like Camelphat, Illyus & Barrientos or KC Lights. At what point do you think your genre and your music are?
I think it’s important to draw influence from around you and it’s great to see dance music in the UK at such a strong point but I try and not think of the music that I write as belonging to any genre. When I’m in the studio I just write music that I love and that means something to me.
WS: ¿Qué artistas británicos te han influido más y hacia qué tipo de sonido o género quieres que se dirija tu sonido en unos años?
KC: The Chemical Brothers han sido una influencia constante para mí. Fueron uno de los artistas que me metieron en la producción musical. He estado colaborando y experimentando mucho más este año, así que estoy muy emocionado por empezar a compartir un rango de estilos diferentes en mis próximos lanzamientos.
WS – Which British artists have principally influenced you? What kind of sound or genre do you want your music to be directed in a few years?
The Chemical Brothers have been a constant influence for me. They were one of the artists that drew me into music production. I’ve been collaborating and experimenting a lot more this year so I’m really excited to start sharing a range of different styles with my upcoming releases.
WS: Es imposible hablar de tu trayectoria sin preguntarte por Toolroom. ¿Cómo de importante ha sido el sello de Mark Knight en tu carrera?
KC: Trabajar con un sello tan legendario ha sido un sueño hecho realidad, pero los más importante es que cuidan mucho a sus artistas y su música.
WS – It is impossible to talk about your career without asking about the Toolroom. How important has Mark Knight’s Label been in your career?
Working with such a legendary label has been a dream come true, but more importantly they care so much about their artists and the music.
WS: ¿Cómo es trabajar con Mark y con todo el equipo de Toolroom?
KC: Todo el mundo en el sello es muy amable y es un placer trabajar con ellos, están muy comprometidos con la música. Saber que la música en la que has entregado cuerpo y alma está en manos de gente tan capaz y cuidadosa es muy importante para mí.
WS – What is it like to work with Mark and the whole Toolroom team?
Everyone at the label is really friendly and great to work with and they are really committed to music. Knowing the music you’ve poured your heart and soul into is in capable and caring hands is so important for me.
WS: El Reino Unido parece ser el país europeo que antes saldrá de la crisis del COVID, lo que significa también tener los primeros grandes eventos en vivo, y ya conocemos a muchos españoles que están fijándose en eventos como elrow, Creamfields, Parklife… ¿Qué les dirías a nuestros lectores para convencerlos de que Reino Unido es una buena opción este verano/otoño?
KC: El Reino Unido tiene una escena electrónica muy fuerte y los eventos a lo largo del año se reconocen como algunos de los mejores del mundo. Para mí lo mejor es la gente, ¡todos están ahí por la música y para pasarlo bien y no puedo aguantar más para volver y compartirlo con todos!
WS – UK seems to be the European country that will come out of the COVID crisis first, which also means having the first big live events, and we already know many Spaniards looking at events such as elrow, Creamfields, Parklife … What would you say to our readers to convince them that the UK is a good option this summer / fall?
The UK has such a strong electronic music scene and the events throughout the year remain some of the best in the world. For me it’s the crowds though, everyone is there for the music and a good time and I can’t wait to get back out there and share it with everyone!
WS: 2020 fue un año muy malo para todos, pero sin embargo tu hit ‘Girl’ se convirtió en uno de los temas más escuchados y bailados del año. ¿Qué crees que tuvo de especial este hit?
KC: Para empezar, estaba muy nervioso por lanzar ‘Girl‘ porque no estaba seguro de si funcionaría sin shows. Creo que hay un sentimiento tan feliz y positivo que conectó con mucha gente en una época muy difícil.
WS – 2020 was a very bad year for everyone, nevertheless your hit ‘Girl’ became one of the most listened and danced songs of the year. What do you think was special in this hit?
I was actually nervous releasing ‘Girl’ to begin with because I wasn’t sure how well it would do in the absence of shows. I think there’s just such a happy, positive feel to it though that connected with so many people going through a difficult time.
WS: Cuando alguien triunfa tanto con una canción, es inevitable que consiga repetir la formula. ¿Eres de los que piensa que si algo funciona, para qué cambiarlo, o por el contrario opinas que no es correcto intentar repetir una canción una y otra vez?
KC: Creo que ha veces se captura magia cuando se escribe un tema, esos suelen ser los que conectan tan bien y es imposible recrearlo así que es mejor seguir con el siguiente con ideas nuevas y frescas.
WS – When someone succeeds so much with a song, it is inevitable to repeat the formula. Are you one of those who thinks that if something works, why change it? or conversely… do you think that it is not correct to repeat a song over and over again?
I think that there’s sometimes magic that’s captured when writing a record, those tend to be the ones that connect so well, and that it’s impossible to recreate so its always best to move on to the next one with new and fresh ideas.
WS: ¿Qué planes o proyectos que nos puedas contar tienes para lo que resta de año?
KC: Tengo ya un par de lanzamientos programados y nunca he estado tan emocionado para que la gente oiga en lo que he estado trabajando. ¡Hay mucha más música que saldrá este año y también tengo muchas ganas de volver a pinchar en grandes eventos y festivales!
WS – What plans or projects that you can tell us do you have for the rest of the year?
I have the next couple of releases lined up already and I’ve never been more excited for people to hear what I’ve been working on. There’s lots of new music coming out this year and I’m also really excited to be back playing lots of great events and festivals!
