WS: This new EP is your first release in a long time . What has been the reason for this wait ? What other areas have you been working on ?

JLF: In fact, I released EPs until 2013 on various labels (Boxon Records and A-Traction Records for example) then I continued with a few remixes including one for Moby. I actually did a lot of studio work, although I didn’t release much between 2014 and 2020.

Above all, I took a break from touring in 2014 because I needed to focus on my studio work, and at the same time, I started again my work in national education.

From that time, a lot of things will remain in my computer, but I know that I did not work for nothing because I regularly reinvest the techniques used them in these unpublished pieces.

Last year I released an EP called “Titanium” on A-Traction, which kicked off my comeback.

Finally, the stopping of my releases corresponds to 6/7 years in fact, so yes, there was a big gap, 10 years, but between my 2 albums, Supersonique, and the next one.

WS: We know that Vitalic is an artist who has greatly influenced on your creative process. How has he influenced in your music ?

JLF: At the very beginning of our meeting, around 1996, we went out to the same clubs, we both liked the techno of the time, we even did a few gigs together around 1998. Then, we took different routes then we met again in 2003 when I was starting to work on the John Lord Fonda project. I remember the few tips he gave me on how to work in the studio. For example, he told me at the time about the importance of having good monitor speakers and gave me some tips like jamming in your head with other musicians when you’re in need of inspiration. What I applied to the track “Music is not computer algebra” on my first album is Dave Clarke and Green Velvet in the studio actually haha!

It’s this kind of stuff that I remembered, it was important for me to move forward calmly.

Today, the distance means that we don’t see each other much anymore, we send each other messages from time to time. We took different routes musically, him more on disco, me more on melodic and sometimes industrial techno.

He trusted me again to release a new album on Citizen, his label, that’s what matters most. For this format, I mainly worked with The Micronauts, another flagship artist of the label, on the mixing and construction / production of some tracks, which was a big help.

WS: This new EP will not be the last you put out this year, in the final of 2021 you will present us your new studio album. What can we expect from it?

JLF: This album is quite different from the others: it is less pop (apart from one song), but much more techno. Today I feel closer to the hypnotic and mental side of techno, and its repetitive side, than to the new-wave and the disco rhythms that dotted my first 2 albums. Also, there are a lot less vocals, this album is almost instrumental. I still used sung voices, in choirs or monodies, most often without words.

There are also electronica tracks, inspired by the great productions of the WARP label. The album format allows this kind of songs, which are rarely found on a techno EP, more intended for the dancefloor. This is the kind of thing that I feel most comfortable with.

Generally speaking, it took me a while to find the right angle for this LP. I gave up using electro or discoid sounds, which were an integral part of my musical approach 10-15 years ago. This way of doing things, I put it aside, I don’t think of going back to it in the future.

WS: Ahora que has vuelto a lanzar música, ¿va a cambiar tu rutina?

WS: Now that you’ve released music again, is it going to change your routine? Have you set a new goal?

JLF: I’ve been planning this album for a while, I’ve been working on it since 2017, my life isn’t really messed up, I’m just getting ready for something else once it’s out. I just have to juggle between my work and the music, I have to be more organized and obviously less hanging around …

In general, I make music in an artisanal way: even if I am not a professional, I must remain rigorous in my work and put my guts into it the most! It is not always easy, moreover!

As for the objectives, they are still the same as at the beginning: to make the music that I like and share it with people. This is the most important goal in my eyes!

WS: Many people envy the musical quality that exists in France, hence the cohesion and quantity of genres and influences. What is your opinion about the current French scene ?

JLF: The French scene is lively and varied. Many different scenes progress, evolve, mix, with fashions. There were the 2 French touch waves, which marked me because I partied a lot at the time, even if it was far from the rave spirit that I liked. There is also a developed hardcore scene. The techno scene is rebounding right now, with artists like Kas:st and I Hate Models, who are very productive and inventive. We do not have to complain about the quantity and the musical quality. Many young artists are entering the electronic music niche and are bringing or will bring a necessary freshness.

It’s obvious, we know how to make very good music in France. However, the mainstream media shun us a bit, it’s a shame because this is not the case in other countries such as England, Belgium …

I hope that in the future this will change!
