Tras su paso por Nexus Festival y con motivo de una inminente nueva edición de Defqon.1, el mayor festival de hardstyle del mundo en el cual tendrán un papel protagonista con hasta 3 shows, hemos tenido la ocasión de charlar con los hermanos Boeren, Martijn y Jeroen, más conocidos como Sound Rush. ¡Vamos allá!
Wololo Sound – ¡Hola Martijn y Jeroen! Es un placer para nosotros teneros en nuestro medio. Para comenzar nos gustaría preguntaros por vuestros inicios. ¿Cómo descubristeis el hardstyle? ¿Cuáles fueron vuestros inicios con la producción y el DJing?
SR – Hola Wololo Sound, gracias por recibirnos. Descubrimos el hardstyle allá por 2007 por unos amigos que lo escuchaban en el instituto. Desde ese momento se abrió todo un mundo nuevo para nosotros.
El primer evento de hardstyle que visitamos fue Reverze en 2008. En cuanto pisamos el evento nos enamoramos de verdad de la música. Desde esa noche empezamos a soñar con estar también en un escenario así.
Aprendimos producción musical con tutoriales de YouTube en nuestra habitación. Lo típico jaja. Nos costó varios años de esfuerzo y dedicación perfeccionar nuestras canciones y alcanzar el nivel de calidad que deseábamos, ¡pero al final lo conseguimos!
Wololo Sound – Hello Martijn and Jeroen! It’s a pleasure for us to have you in our media. We would like to start by asking you about your beginnings. How did you discover hardstyle? What were your first steps in production and DJing?
SR – Hi Wololo Sound, thank you for having us. We discovered hardstyle way back, around 2007. We discovered it from friends listening to it on highschool. From that moment it opened a whole new world for us.
The first hardstyle event we ever visited was Reverze in 2008. The moment we set foot in the venue we really fell in love with the music. From that night on we started dreaming of being on such a stage as well.
We learned music production with YouTube tutorials in our bedroom. The classical way haha. It took us several years of dedicated effort to refine our songs and get on the level of quality we desired, but eventually we got there!
WS – En los últimos años estáis demostrando ser unos de los artistas más productivos en la escena. Son multitud los meses en los que os vemos lanzar más de un tema, ya sean singles, remixes, bootlegs… ¿Hasta qué punto creéis que es necesario que un artista lance nuevas canciones con regularidad?
SR – En nuestra opinión, es importante mantener una cierta consistencia tanto en la calidad como en la frecuencia de lanzamientos. Pero la calidad importa más que la cantidad, por supuesto. Nos pasa que tenemos mucha inspiración en el estudio, por eso podemos publicar tantos temas en un año.
WS – In the last years you are proving to be two of the most productive artists in the scene. There are many months in which we see you releasing more than one track: singles, remixes, bootlegs… In which way do you think it is necessary for an artist to release new songs on a regular basis?
SR – If you ask us, it’s important to have a certain consistency in both the quality and the frequency of your releases. But quality matters more than the quantity, of course. It happens to be the case that we have a lot of inspiration in the studio, that’s why we can release so many tracks in a year.
WS – Otro aspecto que os caracteriza es vuestra cercanía con los fans. A menudo soléis publicar en redes sociales cuáles serán vuestros próximos releases, nuevas collabs, proyectos… ¿Sentís que es importante estar tan conectados con vuestros seguidores? ¿Alguna vez habéis filtrado algo que no se debía publicar aún?
SR – Sí, pensamos que es muy importante. Pero sobre todo es porque nos gusta mucho mantener el contacto con nuestros fans. Parece como una familia. Nunca hemos filtrado nada grande o impactante, pero creemos que una vez en el pasado filtramos algo pequeño con nuestros fans por nuestro entusiasmo. Por desgracia, no recordamos qué fue 😉
WS – Another thing that distinguishes you is your closeness with your fans. You often post on social media about your upcoming releases, new collabs, projects. Do you feel it’s important to be so connected with your fans? Have you ever leaked something that wasn’t supposed to be published yet?
SR – Yes, very important, we think. But mostly it’s because we really like to keep in touch with our fans. They feel like family. We never leaked something big or shocking, but we think it once happened in the past that we leaked something small with our fans out of our enthusiasm. Unfortunately, we can’t remember what it was 😉
WS – Hace unos meses disteis un par de noticias preciosas en vuestras cuentas personales: ambos vais a ser padres próximamente. En primer lugar, nuestra más sincera enhorabuena. Ahora, es inevitable preguntarse cómo va a afectaros este cambio en vuestro estilo de vida en el aspecto más puramente profesional. ¿Pararéis vuestras giras durante un tiempo? ¿Se verá reducida vuestra actividad en el estudio también?
SR – Gracias. Los dos vamos a tener una niña, lo que lo hace aún más especial. Las giras continuarán, ya que somos un dúo y uno de nosotros puede salir de gira en solitario durante el periodo posterior al nacimiento. Pero lo más probable es que eso sólo pase en un par de shows.
WS – A few months ago, you gave a couple of precious news in your personal accounts: you are both going to be parents soon. First of all, our most sincere congratulations. Now, it’s inevitable to wonder how this change in your lifestyle is going to affect you on a purely professional level. Will you stop touring for a while? Will your studio activity be reduced as well?
SR – Thank you! We are both having a girl, which makes it even more special. The touring will continue as we are a duo and one of us can tour alone in the period after the births. But most likely, this will only be for a couple of shows.
WS – Estamos en plena época de festivales y el más grande de todos está a la vuelta de la esquina: Defqon.1. Si nos remontamos a la edición del año pasado, allí sucedió el que es, probablemente, uno de los highlights de vuestra carrera: vuestro tema ‘Transform’, junto a Sogma y Robin Vane, fue parte del Endshow del festival. ¿Tenéis pensado realizar próximamente más canciones como ‘Transform’? ¿Requirió más trabajo que una canción más habitual, debido a las características de la misma?
SR – Sí, sin duda fue lo más destacado. Definitivamente nuestro mayor highlight el año pasado. Defqon.1 es nuestro festival favorito y disfrutar de tu propia canción junto a más de 60.000 personas durante un espectáculo final del más alto nivel es algo que no se puede describir con palabras.
Nos encanta hacer canciones temáticas de vez en cuando. Para este año, hemos creado otro tema que cuenta una historia, que será el tema final de nuestros livesets. Eso sí, a 200 BPM’s.
WS – We are in the middle of the festival season and the biggest festival of all is just around the corner: Defqon.1 Weekend Festival. If we go back to last year’s edition, we can find probably one of the highlights of your career: your song ‘Transform’, together with Sogma and Robin Vane, was part of the festival’s Endshow. Do you plan to do more songs like ‘Transform’ in the future? Did it require more work than a more usual song, due to the characteristics of the song?
SR – Yes it definitely was a big highlight. Definitely the biggest from us last year. Defqon.1 is our favourite festival of the year and enjoying your own song together with over 60K people during a next-level endshow is something you can’t describe in words.
We love to do songs with a strong theme every now and then. For this year, we’ve created another strong story-telling track like this that will be the ending track in our livesets. Expect 200 BPM’s though.
WS – De cara a Defqon.1 2023 suponemos que habréis preparado nuevos ID’s y colaboraciones que nos sorprenderán. Precisamente una de vuestras canciones no lanzadas aún es ‘Destination’, la cual aparece como subtítulo de una de vuestras actuaciones en Defqon.1 este año. ¿En qué forma está relacionada esa canción con los vibes del festival? ¿Nos podéis contar alguna novedad más que presentaréis durante Defqon.1?
SR – El jueves vamos a hacer algo “secreto”. No podemos decir lo que es todavía, pero si eres un verdadero fan de Sound Rush, ¡tenemos algo muy guay que anunciar! Podemos prometer que el título #Destination forma parte de algo grande, que revelaremos durante nuestra actuación en el mainstage el sábado entre las 3 y las 4 de la tarde. ¡Daremos un adelanto de lo que está por venir durante nuestro directo #Destination el lunes 19 de junio a las 8 de la tarde en nuestro canal de YouTube!
WS – Looking ahead to Defqon.1 2023 we assume that you will have prepared new ID’s and collaborations that will surprise us. One of your unreleased songs is ‘Destination’, which appears as the subtitle of one of your performances at Defqon.1 this year. In which way is this song related to the vibes of the festival? Can you tell us any more surprises that you will reveal during Defqon.1?
SR – On Thursday there will be something “secret” that we are going to do. We can’t say what it is yet, but if you are a true Sound Rush fan, then we have something very cool to announce! We can promise that the addition of #Destination is part of something big, which we will all reveal during our set at the mainstage on Saturday between 3 PM and 4 PM. We’re already giving a sneak peak of what’s to come during our #Destination livestream on Monday June 19, 8PM CEST on our Sound Rush YouTube channel!
WS – Otro de vuestros sets ese fin de semana será el de 2△1, junto con Atmozfears. El mes pasado lanzasteis vuestro primer EP en conjunto, y el segundo de ellos vendrá más tarde este año, según contasteis en redes. ¿Cómo surgió el proyecto en común con Tim?
SR – Sí, acabamos de lanzar el EP 1 y también recientemente la continuación de ‘Country Roads’, llamada ‘My Heart Will Go On (Titanic)’. Y esto no es todo, ya que durante Defqon.1 presentaremos otro tema. Tenemos planes para lanzar el EP 2 este año o el que viene, pero aún no tenemos la fecha exacta.
WS – Another one of your sets that weekend will be 2△1, together with Atmozfears. Last month you released your first EP together, and the second one is coming later this year, according to what you announced in your socials. How did the project with Tim come about?
SR – Yes, we indeed just released EP 1 and also recently the follow-up of ‘Country Roads’, called ‘My Heart Will Go On (Titanic)’. It doesn’t stop there, yet another track will be premiered during Defqon.1. We have plans to release EP 2 this year or next year, but we don’t have the exact release date yet.
WS – Precisamente una de las canciones que más reacciones han levantado es vuestro rework de la banda sonora de Titanic, la cual es un tanto… especial. ¿Estáis trabajando en nuevos temas tan divertidos y que tanto gustan a vuestros seguidores?
SR – Nos gusta trabajar en canciones divertidas de vez en cuando. Pero bromas aparte, nos aseguraremos de que habrá suficientes canciones “serias” también.
WS – Actually one of the songs that have raised the most reactions is your rework of the Titanic soundtrack, which is a bit… special. Are you working on new songs that are so much fun and that your fans like so much?
SR – We like to work on funny songs every now and then. But all jokes aside, we’ll make sure there will be enough “credible” tracks as well.
WS – Otra de las noticias que os han rodeado últimamente fue vuestra salida del sello Art of Creation, donde veníais sacando parte de vuestra música los últimos años. ¿Cuáles han sido los motivos para dejar esta discográfica? ¿Está en vuestros planes firmar por alguna otra, o preferís no encasillaros en una concreta y lanzar vuestros temas en la que os parezca más oportuna cada vez?
SR – Creemos que es el momento adecuado para empezar algo nuevo y fresco. Estamos muy orgullosos y contentos de lo que hemos conseguido durante nuestra etapa en Art of Creation, con un montón de lanzamientos muy interesantes, tanto en solitario como colaboraciones. La guinda del pastel fue nuestro primer álbum, que publicamos en 2020. Siempre estaremos agradecidos a Headhunterz y Wildstylez por las oportunidades que nos han brindado y, sin duda, seguiremos en contacto con ellos. Pronto se sabrá qué nos depara el futuro en cuanto a lanzamientos.
WS – Another news that has surrounded you lately was your departure from the Art of Creation label, where you have been releasing most of your music for the last few years. What were the reasons for leaving this label? Are you planning to sign for any other label, or do youprefer not to stick yourselves in a specific one and release your songs in the one that seems most appropriate for you each time?
SR – For us it feels that this is the right moment to start something new and fresh. We are really proud and happy of what we achieved in our Art of Creation time with a lot of exciting solo releases and collabs. The cherry on top was our first album that we released in 2020. We will always remain thankful to Headhunterz and Wildstylez for the opportunities they gave us and we will definitely stay in good contact with them! What the future will hold for our music releases, will become clear soon.
WS – Después de tantos años en la escena habéis sido capaces de colaborar con algunos de los mejores artistas de hardstyle, habéis pinchado en los mainstages de los mejores festivales… ¿Os queda aún algún sueño por cumplir? ¿Cuáles son vuestros objetivos a corto y largo plazo?
SR – Nuestros sueños y objetivos serán revelados pronto. Como dijimos antes, un pequeño anuncio tendrá lugar el jueves por la noche. Muy exclusivo. El gran anuncio se hará durante nuestro set en el escenario principal del RED.
WS – After so many years in the scene you have been able to collaborate with some of the best hardstyle artists, you have played on the mainstages of the best festivals… Do you still have any dreams to fulfill? What are your short and long term goals?
SR – Our dreams and goals are soon to be revealed. As we said before, the small announcement will be held on Thursday night. Very exclusive. The big announcement will be done during our mainstage set at the RED.
