Hello Kenth, hello Marcus. We are very honored to have you here in our media. You always look very happy but how are you doing right now in a personal level but also in terms of motivation?
We actually started the year off kind of slow, which was nice for a change. Yeah. We’ve had in January, February, kind of quiet, had a lot of time to be at home, sleep in our own beds, and also spend a lot of time in the studio. So I would say overall happy, you know, it’s always nice to be able to start the year off fresh, recharge your batteries and prepare for the yearly madness that’s going to be starting right now. Usually when it comes to music, we’re always one step ahead, and I feel like this year we’ve been two steps ahead, so it’s very nice to have everything on point.
You are two of the most international artists in the hard dance scene, and what explains your success is that a Da Tweekaz set always puts a smile on your face. The vibes are sick and the atmosphere is amazing so which is the secret behind all this? What do you think it’s the element that people enjoy the most from your performances?
I think that one of the reasons that people enjoy the tweaker set is because we always have a great time on stage, and we’re not afraid to show it. We always like to interact with the crowds, we always try to think of new ways to interact with the crowd, and we treat our sets basically like we’re playing for a bunch of friends, and we’re trying to make it as fun as possible, as light hearted as possible, and at the same time represent the whole genre of hard dance. Everything from hardstyle to sometimes drum and bass, happy hardcore, just overall a pleasant vibe and just positive outcome for everybody
You premiered your brand new show ‘Zero Ducks Given’ at Reverze, and we were there to witness it. We liked it so much but the first question is a must: why ducks? Where did you get the inspiration for the whole theme of the show?
Well, the whole duck story goes back to the beginning of our careers, and basically, you know, the whole duck concept started with us being at an after party in Norway, hearing a duck sound on Spotify, thinking it would be so fun to make a song out of this, and we did, and people seemed to really like it. They started giving us ducks as gifts at the party, we’re talking more than 10 years ago now, and then at some point, we wanted to implement ducks in our sets as well, so we started giving out, handing out ducks, custom ducks at our shows, and the fans, they just absolutely loved it.
So we did that for a few years, got exhausted of it, so we decided enough is enough, we’re not going to be traveling with 200-300 ducks every weekend, so we called it off for a while, and then our management came up with this Zero Ducks Given project, and to be honest, in the beginning, we were not feeling it that much, but once we sat down and we gave these Zero Ducks Given characters
We wanted to take the ducks to the next level, have them mature a little bit, because obviously a rubber ducky can be looked upon as a little childish, but we wanted them to have a bit of balls, a little bit of modern vibe to it, at the same time be more warrior ducks, so they would feel like, like, there’s, it’s still, it’s something happy, it’s something that fits the tweakers, but at the same time be a bit more adult.
We gave them a name, we gave them a background, and they have their own universe where they thrive in, and it all came together so beautifully, and you can visually just see that on the screen as we’re playing, and it just feels like we’re taking on some, like, adventurous journey as we’re playing as Da Tweekaz, so it’s really something refreshing for us, and also for the crowd, and we really look forward to bringing this concept to all over Europe, and hopefully other places throughout the year
Algo con The Elite?
We could listen to some brand new tracks for the first time there. Apart from those singles and some collabs, what can we expect from Da Tweekaz this year in terms of productions? Maybe a new album? Something with The Elite?
I mean, when it comes to our music, and how we work in the studio, we’re not as strategic, we don’t plan months ahead what we’re gonna do, and especially not albums, because we already dropped some albums in the past, and it feels like in today’s, you know, society, with the short attention span, you want to leave a mark on every song, and if you release an album, that those 12 tracks are forgotten, and within a couple months, maybe there will be three or four, you know, bigger songs, but the rest will be forgotten, so we much more prefer to release one song per month at max, and then each song gets a little space to breathe, and get the attention that it deserve.
In terms of this year, we are very spontaneous producers, we travel the world, all of a sudden we bump into an artist, and we start chatting, and we decide to jump in the studio together, so it’s really, it keeps us on our toes as well, we never really know what we’re gonna do, but somehow it always turns out great
At Reverze you also premiered a brand new edit by Aversion to your track ‘Dragonducks’, also he was recently in Tweeka TV. Will we see a collab with him coming soon? And, talking about young artists, Who do you think are the ones to watch for this year?
Well, if you watch Tweeka TV with Aversion, where he showed us that Dragon Ducks edit, which is a really, really, really cool and loud edit of this, and if there’s anybody that would fit to make an edit of the song, it’s only him basically. Now, we talked about a call-up, but if he has time for us, we’ll see, because he’s pretty much making call-ups with everybody, so we need to fit into his busy schedule.
Speaking of young artists… Serzo. From Norway is doing really well at the moment, as far as, you know, the older we get, the a little less connected we feel to the younger DJs, so it’s really hard to keep up on who’s the new upcoming act to follow.
You know, in Holland there’s these hypes going on, but that music is not something that we usually play, so it’s hard to tell what’s gonna be the next big thing. But yeah, like Marcus says, Serzo, a guy from Norway, super talented. He’s got a nice balance between hard music and melodic sounds. That’s definitely one to keep an eye on.
You’ve been closing your sets with uptempo for years. Either with GPF edits, or now with Dimitri K or Lil Texas remixes, the uptempo closings are something your fans are very familiar with. What do you think about this genre? Will we see Da Tweekaz producing some uptempo tracks in the future?
Personally, I, Marcus, ¨hate¨ up-tempo. I don’t hate it. I think it’s fun. I think it’s a fun genre for a few tracks here and there. I remember in the beginning when GPF first did a quick edit of Frozen, it was the shock moment in the set for pretty much everybody. Now, today, it’s more standard. I think a lot of hardstyle DJs end their sets in 200 BPM, be it peep kicks or just normal up-tempo slash Frenchcore. I think it’s fun. It stands out in the set as a whole and it kind of puts this nice little cherry on the pie as a little quick finisher. Yeah, it just always leaves the next DJ with either a frowny face or a smile on his face. So it’s always fun.
No importa.
Continuing with your productions, one of the most famous and important releases of your career is probably ‘Jägermeister’. What does it mean to you, both the track and the alcoholic drink? What would you say are the most relevant tracks of your career apart from ‘Jägermeister’?
It’s the nature of life… Well, the whole Jägermeister thing for us has been an internal joke we have with a good friend from Holland. From the very beginning that we started DJing in Holland and Germany and Belgium, we quickly adapted Jägermeister into our, you know, party mode drinking style.
The year when we played Qlimax for the first time is the year that we decided that we needed something like a shocker in our set that we didn’t want to be the acts that played just a generic set. We wanted to do something stupid and fun and like to piss off the haters a bit. So Jägermeister, that idea kind of came that way because we already had done at the time, we had already done a vodka track and a tequila track. So Jäger became like a natural follow-up to those two. And we thought like, let’s make it as over-the-top as possible, you know, with yodeling and all these like German T-roller-style instruments. We just wanted it to be crazy. And I still remember to this day looking over at Marcus as we were playing and he looks down on the screen and he looks back at me and he says, well, here we go. And the audience just, they cheered it on. It was such a different vibe than everything else that was going on that night at Qlimax and it’s without a doubt the biggest track of our career.
And it’s timeless. Like we still get messages from people who’s at an after-ski somewhere up in the Alps or they’re at a carnival somewhere or they’re at, you know, like Oktoberfest. It doesn’t matter. Like Jägermeister will for always be this like timeless party track. And like our label manager says, he calls it our pension song, you know, because it’s gonna be endless. It’s gonna be around forever
And other tracks… obviously Disney remix. They will always work because everybody has a some sort of relation to Disney. But there’s one track that we keep playing all around the world and it’s a collab we did together with Refuzion. It’s called ‘Because of You‘ and it’s one of those question and answer songs basically where the melody plays one bit and then the crowd can sing the other bit and it always works pretty much since we made it and it works everywhere. That one and ‘Komon‘ because is a such a party track, party vibe, which has a combination of drum and bass and a slow part and it’s just, you know, a little bit of like a ragga style and it’s just all-around a pleasant festival track. And I think that’s one of the first tracks that fully got supported a lot from other DJs as well. I remember seeing a video of Wildstylez playing that song and he didn’t play any of our music before that.
Let’s talk about Disney, because you’ve made a lot of remixes of several Disney movies’ soundtracks that have become really viral and famous. Why did you decide to start doing that? Related to this, do you think it is important to connect with the inner child we all have inside? And a bit off-topic… with which Disney character do you identify the most with?
It is. I think the first one we made was ‘Healing Incantation‘ . Yeah, that one didn’t get picked up that much. It didn’t create like a shocker effect. It is a beautiful song. It is a nice song and we did play it for like a couple years. But then when we did ‘Frozen‘, that’s when we really rocked the boat because that was, at the time, Hardstyle was very serious and here we come with our Disney Hardstyle.
And it was really like a hated or loved thing. Like we attracted so many new fans when we did that track Frozen, but we also created a lot of haters, you know. But it all in all, it really defined us as these like thinking outside the box. Not everything has to be super serious. We’re gonna have fun on stage. We’re not gonna be limited to follow like a certain expectation as to what a Hardstyle DJ should be. We’re gonna be the weird Norwegians that didn’t have the same influence that like everybody else. We’re gonna do our own thing. And the Disney songs, they really reflect on that because I mean nowadays, there’s a big hit on the radio. The next day you can see three Hardstyle remixes on YouTube, you know. But back when we started doing that, no one else dared to do those things.
So it feels good to be one of the first that actually you just said, you know what, fuck it. We’re gonna remix some Disney songs because we are big Disney fans. And if we hear a cool soundtrack, even nowadays, if we hear a cool soundtrack from a Disney movie, you can be sure that we’re gonna, you know, put a little Tweeka twist on it.
That is a tough question. Yeah, because there are so many Disney characters out there. You have to pick one, I guess. Um I guess Kuzco from The Emperor’s. It’s a cartoon about an emperor becoming a llama. And he’s just selfish and funny until he learns a lesson about life. And then he becomes friends with everybody and he gets a pool and it’s a cool dude. He’s funny. I like his humor.
TWEEKA TV!
No obligamos a nadie, mira a Warface.
TweekaTV! We love your streams, but we would like to ask how did you come up with the idea of doing them? Can you tell us some behind-the-scenes anecdotes?
Well, TweekaV, before the pandemic was basically just us with a hand cam walking around. So the name was already easy to to revive, but during the pandemic we were so bored. We have this, we need to have this outlet of insanity and energy and to basically entertain, because that’s what we’re used to. We love to make music and play it for people, but during the pandemic when everything shut down, we couldn’t do anything and we had just bought this new studio, this new building.
And we had a room that we didn’t really use either. So we decided to turn it into the stream room. It was a time when everybody started streaming, basically. But we did not think that we would sit here and make 86 episodes of TweekaTV and that it would be such a… Trademark thing for our name. We’ve had everybody in the scene, almost, as guests, and they all rock up voluntarily. They all get drunk voluntarily. We don’t force anybody look at Warface.
And it’s so nice to see that everybody in the Hardstyle scene are willing to step up and to show the fans who they really are on Tweeka TV. It’s very nice. We do have a few anecdotes, but they’re… There are a lot of them that we just cannot share with the public. We’re talking about pants off and, you know, things happening.
Maybe you could say a story and not mention the person.
Yeah, yeah. Honestly, there’s already a lot of craziness going on in front of the camera, but also behind the camera. We’ve had a person roll down the stairs and leave a pool of blood on the floor because he was so drunk. Luckily, he didn’t die. We had another DJ who walked around naked, waving his dick around after Tweeka TV was done.
You know, and I’m just… I’m so surprised that our office is still standing and we have no damages on the actual building. There’s just, you know,a few broken things here and there,
But all in all, like Marcus said, we were so bored and that show, absolutely saved our mental health throughout the pandemic.Like, we had so much fun with our colleagues and friends and… It felt fun to make music again. And like, we come from this background in Norway where we didn’t go clubbingbecause the music was fucking shit. So we ended up having these home parties where we would put up decks and just play music, have fun with our friends, grab some drinks and just be silly. And it really felt like we reincarnated that vibe of growing up and having home parties, but just in front of a camera with Tweeka TV!
A question we always like to make to the artists is about touring and the pressure and stress that come with it. How do you deal with it? What would you say it’s the best and the worst of all this touring?
Two of the best things about touring is obviously meeting or seeing clubs and crowds all over the world. To be able to perform for people that cannot necessarily go to festivals in Europe and all the good food amazing food all over the world. As we are sitting here with bellies full of food doing this interview. Literally just had barbecue and good food, right?
The worst is the jet lag. Yeah, the jet lag and like… The waiting. Yeah, most of the time, like Marcus says, Sometimes you cannot avoid like this 9 a.m. flight and you basically got back from the venue at five in the morning. So you just basically pack up, take a shower and go straight to the airport. And a flight cancellation combined with a little cozy hangover on top of that
We assume a lot of strange moments must have happened to you at backstages. Could you tell us any fun story that happened to you recently?
Well, maybe not recently, but we have a friend from Norway. He was with us in Finland. Um… And he got pretty drunk. He got pretty rowdy at the backstage. And I remember him standing up from the couchand just falling over the glass table and shattering a glass table all over the backstage. And that was the last time we were invited to that venue. So that was great.
You are the definition of PARTY so is a must to ask you what elements the ¨perfect festival¨ need in terms of the time of the year, the stages, the venue, the DJs…?
You need a good, good sound system, you gotta you gotta have the pumping crowd, probably in summertime, from like 2pm till midnight, that’s absolutely perfect, then we can sleep off the hangovers.
If you’re wondering which Colleagues we’re talking about here, then you can easily look at later on this year, we’re having some hostings festivals, and we’re doing some zero ducks given events around the world. And we will bring the colleagues there. So basically, these are the people that we have a click with, these are the genuine people that feel the ones that we feel are genuine towards us. And the ones who just create a good vibe, so you got to surround yourself with friends to have the perfect vibe.
No dije nada.
No paró.
Let’s end up asking about Spain. What do you think about how we Spanish people party? Do we live up to the party level a Da Tweekaz set need?
Honestly, I feel like the Spanish people can party harder than us because your party’s lasts so long. I remember one of the first times we played in Spain. And I just remember that it was the drinking in the parking, we enter the club and it was not very full. And I was a bit worried. I didn’t say anything. And then five minutes before I went on stage, everybody came in at the same time. And the vibe was just nuts.
And then it was nuts until 10 in the morning. It just didn’t stop. And it’s I don’t think you see that a lot around Europe is I feel like it’s mainly the Spanish crowd that can go hard from basically either beginning until the sun is well above the horizon.
Finally, some short questions:
A must in your suitcase: Nintendo Switch ans earplugs
The best performance of your life: Twomorrowland Main Stage 2019 and Defqon last year
Your favourite food: All, we love good food
A dream yet to be fulfilled: I feel like the dream for every year is to visit new pet places to conquer new stages that we’ve never played before.
An advice for a young artist: Yeah, we actually do get this this question a lot. And the answer is always the same. Just never give up. Just continue to pursue your dream. Stand by your sound find your own identity in music and love what you do and also if you feel like it sounds bad if you’re working against the wall are you hitting a wall keep in mind that we’ve all been there. It happens to everyone. Persistence, persistence is key.
An advice to be happy: Jagger?… Everyone has a different definition of of happiness your your definition. Yeah. Uh, like I can always I can only speak for myself obviously. But, you know, I think that the, to be able to have your work or your passion to be your work, being able to travel the world and make music and be so independent and not rely on anyone else is the most freeing and happy feeling that I could ever achieve. Because what we’re doing is you can’t compare it to any other profession. So for me, that that is what makes me happy. Also don’t
care what people think. Like, yeah, if you’re if you’re happy, you’re happy. People will always find a way to make fun of you. Doesn’t matter if you’re happy. You’re happy.
Ok guys, thank you and see you soon! Thank you Wololololo, and good luck typing all this stuff
