No es ningún secreto que el drum n bass está viviendo una segunda juventud, casi de forma literal. Una nueva horneada de artistas está tomando el control del género, con una frescura a la producción que ha dejado boquiabiertos a fans y veteranos. Uno de estos nombres que están en la ola es sin duda Rohaan, quién desde Manchester parece que está cumpliendo múltiples hitos a través de sus producciones. Ha firmado por Mad Zoo de Mat Zo, Sable Valley de RL Grime, remezcla oficial a Ghastly y ahora ha estrenado su último tema ‘Laser‘ en UKF.
Su buen estado de forma, cómo la mentalidad “do it yourself” permite llegar muy lejos sin sellos, qué le depara su futuro y mucho más, en esta entrevista en exclusiva para Wololo Sound.
WOLOLO SOUND: ¡Hola Rohaan! Lo primero es lo primero, muchas gracias por tomarte tu tiempo para responder a las preguntas. Has estado muy ocupado últimamente, pero vamos a empezar con una simple pregunta: ¿Cómo estás? ¿Cómo te trata la vida últimamente?
ROHAAN: ¡Hola colega, gracias por recibirme! La vida ha sido buena últimamente, contando mis bendiciones día a día. Estoy en una buena posición en mi carrera musical, tengo un manager increíble, una familia que me apoya y una novia estupenda. Agradecido por todo ello.
WOLOLO SOUND: Hi Rohaan! First things first, thank you very much for taking your time to answer your questions. You have been very busy lately, but let’s begin with a simple question: How are you? How is life treating you lately?
ROHAAN: Hey mate, cheers for having me! Life has been good recently, counting my blessings day by day. I’m in a good position in my music career, I have an amazing manager, supportive family, and great girlfriend. Grateful for it all.
WS: Has tenido la oportunidad de trabajar con grandes sellos y parece que hay más por venir, pero para ‘Purity’, tu último tema, decidiste optar por un auto lanzamiento. Hoy en día, parece que sacar música por tu cuenta se está convirtiendo en algo, y vemos que cada vez más artistas dejan atrás la mentalidad de “necesito un sello para que mi lanzamiento tenga éxito”. Dos preguntas por aquí: ¿cómo ha sido el feedback de la canción? ¿Por qué, desde tu punto de vista, esta mentalidad de “hazlo tú mismo” está creciendo entre los artistas?
R: ¡El feedback fue increíble! Recibí un montón de mensajes diciendo cómo podían escuchar el estilo Rohaan en la canción, lo cual es un gran punto. Me alegra que la gente pueda empezar a identificar mi estilo en mi música.
Con el poder de las redes sociales, ya no es necesario un sello para llegar a un público más amplio. Puedes crear y lanzar una carrera musical al completo desde la comodidad de tu propia casa. Ya no necesitas que una discográfica convencional te dé ese alcance. Me entusiasma empezar a sacar más lanzamientos por mí mismo, hacer crecer mi fan base y ganar impulso de esa manera junto con los lanzamientos de los sellos.
WS: You’ve had the chance to work with big labels and it seems there’s more to come, but for ‘Purity’, your latest track, you decided to go with a self-release. Nowadays, it seems that putting out music on your own is becoming a thing, and we see more and more artists leaving behind the “I need a label for my release to succeed” mentality. Two questions over here: how was the feedback on the tune? Why is it from your point of view that this DIY mindset is growing amongst artists?
R: The feedback was amazing! I got a ton of messages saying how they could hear the ‘Rohaan’ style in the song, which is a great point to be at. Happy that people can start to identify my style in my music.
With the power of social media, you don’t necessarily need a label to reach a larger audience. You can create and launch a full music career from the comfort of your own home. You don’t necessarily need the conventional brick and mortar label to give you that reach anymore. I’m excited to start rolling out more self-releases, growing my core fan base, and building momentum that way alongside label releases.
WS: Hablando de sellos, hace poco anunciaste que te unías a Sable Valley, el sello de RL Grime, y parece que estás muy emocionado por ello. ¿Qué significa esto para ti? ¿Hay algún tipo de colaboración a largo plazo entre tú y el sello, además del próximo lanzamiento?
R: Estoy muy contento de formar parte de la Sable Family. ¡El lanzamiento se hizo de rogar! Después de un año trabajando junto a ellos para elaborar la demo perfecta, terminé enviando una demo que hice en 2019. Esa canción resultó ser ‘CCC‘. Es una gran sensación poder estrenar canciones allí.
WS: Talking about labels, you recently announced you joined Sable Valley, RL Grime’s label, and it seems you are really excited about it. What does this mean to you? Is there any long-term partnership between you and the label beside the upcoming release?
R: Really happy to be a part of the Sable family now. The release was a long time coming! After a year of working alongside them to craft the perfect demo, I ended up sending a demo I made back in 2019. That song happened to be ‘CCC‘. Just a great feeling to be able to release there.
WS: Hablemos de la escena del drum and bass. Tú eres uno de los nombres de esta gran oleada de jóvenes artistas de drum and bass que se están abriendo paso últimamente. En cuanto a tu visión del drum and bass, ¿cuál es la principal diferencia entre artistas como tú y los veteranos del género?
R: Buena pregunta, no estoy seguro de la diferencia como tal. Considero que cada artista tiene su propio sonido, independientemente de la época. Dicho esto, definitivamente diría que veo mucha experimentación hacia lo underground y un pensamiento de avance descomunal en cuanto a mezclar géneros en el diseño del sonido del drum and bass “mainstream” más popular ahora mismo.
WS: Let’s talk about the drum and bass scene. You are one of the names of this huge wave of young drum and bass artists that are breaking through lately. Regarding your vision of drum and bass, what is the main difference between artists like you and the veterans of the genre?
R: Good question, I’m not sure of the difference as such. As I see each artist as their own sound in a way, regardless of era. That being said I would definitely say that I see a lot of left-field experimentation and crazy forward-thinking genre-bending sound design being at the front of ‘mainstream’ DnB now.
WS: A pesar de ser considerado por muchos como un “a los que no perder de vista” en el futuro de la escena DnB, has demostrado que tus habilidades de producción pueden llevarte fuera del género, como hiciste con ‘Fore’ y tu remix a ‘Help’ de Ghastly. ¿Podemos esperar más Rohaan fuera del DnB en un futuro próximo? ¿Cuáles son algunos de los géneros en los que te gustaría poner tu marca?
R: Sí, absolutamente, siempre he hecho gran variedad de música. Lo que pasa es que el DnB es el género que me gusta ahora mismo. Dicho esto, actualmente estoy trabajando con algunos artistas de pop / R&B en algunos remixes oficiales. Mi objetivo es introducir mi sonido en el mainstream.
Así que pronto habrá más música orientada hacia el pop 🙂
WS: Despite being considered for many as a “one-to-watch” for the future of the DnB scene, you’ve demonstrated that your production skills can bring you outside the genre, as you did with ‘Fore’ and your remix for Ghastly’s ‘Help’. Can we expect more non-DnB Rohaan in the near future? What are some of the genres you’d like to put your trademark on?
R: Yeah absolutely, I’ve always made such a wide range of music. It just happened that DnB is the genre I’m loving right now. That being said, I am currently working with some pop / R&B artists on some official remixes. I’m aiming to get my sound into the mainstream.
So more pop-oriented music is coming soon 🙂
WS: Estamos emocionados por saber hasta dónde puedes llegar experimentando en nuevos géneros, pero si hay algo que sabemos con seguridad es que tu encantador sonido está cautivando a la industria del DnB, tanto a los artistas como al público. Lo demostraste con el lanzamiento de tu primer álbum ‘Bleach’ en MAD ZOO el año pasado. ¿Cómo se te ocurrió publicar tu álbum debut en el sello de Mat Zo? ¿Cómo es tu relación con Mat?
R: Sinceramente ha sido una trayectoria increíble desde entonces, veo ‘Bleach’ como el álbum fundamental que lanzó mi carrera. Envié una playlist de demo a MAD ZOO en 2020, principalmente de halftime. Mat Zo respondió diciendo que le gustaba la dirección pero que las canciones necesitaban más trabajo. Entonces pinché en un show en Londres para Unchained Asia, empecé mi set con algunas canciones de halftime, y en cuanto empecé a poner DnB la gente se volvió loca. Fue ese concierto el que me hizo cambiar al DnB.
Volví al estudio y creé 8 nuevas demos… Se las envié a Mat Zo y BAM, decidió firmar cada una de ellas. El primer single, ‘Stay’, salió en la compilación. A partir de ahí, lanzamos el álbum. Sinceramente, me cambió la vida, Mat Zo y yo hicimos unos cuantos streamings en directo transmitiendo una colaboración en la que estábamos trabajando. La radio de Noisia estrenó mi trabajo y, a partir de ahí, el resto se difundió fácilmente.
Estoy muy contento.
WS: We are excited to hear how far you can go while experimenting on new genres, but if there’s one thing we know for sure is that your charming sound is captivating the DnB industry, both artists and crowd. You demonstrated that with the release of your first album ‘Bleach’ on MAD ZOO last year. How did you come up with releasing your debut album on Mat Zo’s label? How’s your relationship with Mat?
R: It’s honestly been an amazing journey since then, I see Bleach as the pivotal album that launched my career. I sent a demo playlist to MAD ZOO back in 2020, mostly halftime. Mat Zo replied saying he liked the direction but the tunes needed more work. I then played a show in London for Unchained Asia, I started my set with some halftime tunes, then as soon as I started dropping DnB people went nuts. It was that show that made me make the switch to DnB.
I went back to the drawing board and created 8 new demos… Sent them to Mat Zo and BAM, he decided to sign each one of them. The first single ‘Stay’ went out on the compilation. Then from there, we rolled out the album.
It honestly changed my life, Mat Zo and I did a few live streams together streaming a collab we were working on. Noisia radio premiered my work then the rest rolled out very easily from there.
Very happy.
WS: ¿Cuál crees que será la gran tendencia dentro del drum and bass en 2021? ¿Sonidos más oscuros? ¿Sonidos melódicos? ¿Tal vez algo más técnico?
R: Veo que la gente se está pasando a otros géneros. Personalmente, creo que vamos a ver un montón de temas más experimentales y progresistas en lo “mainstream”. Ahora vemos más canciones de 130bpm / house de productores de DnB, lo cual mola mucho.
WS: What do you think will be the big trend within drum and bass in 2021? Darker sounds? Melodic sounds? Maybe something more technical?
R: I’m seeing people shift into other genres now. So I personally feel we will see a ton more experimental, left-field tunes break into the ‘mainstream’. Seeing more break 130bpm / house tunes from DnB producers now which is cool.
WS: Uno de los acontecimientos más destacados y recientes de la comunidad de la música electrónica fue Secret Sky, el festival online de Porter Robinson que ha presentado a varios artistas al mundo entero. Parece que allí se pinchó música inédita de Rohaan. ¿Qué se siente al vivir ese tipo de apoyo a través de una pantalla, en lugar de poder ver a la gente reaccionando en directo?
R: Ha sido bastante guay. Paso mucho tiempo volviendo sobre mis pasos y viendo de dónde vengo. Comparar al Rohaan de 16 años con el de ahora es una locura. Se habría vuelto loco sabiendo que estas cosas iban a suceder (ese tema inédito saldrá muy pronto).
WS: One of the recent highlights of the Electronic Music community was Secret Sky, the online festival by Porter Robinson which has showcased several artists to the entire world. Seems that there was some unreleased Rohaan music played there. How does it feel to live that kind of support all through a screen, instead of being able to watch people live-reacting to it?
R: It was pretty dope. I spend a lot of time retracing my steps and seeing where I came from. Comparing 16-year-old Rohaan to now is crazy. He would’ve been going crazy knowing that these things would be happening (that unreleased tune is out very soon).
WS: Hablando de actuaciones en directo, aquí en España hay una escena de drum and bass establecida en la parte sur (Andalucía). ¿Has escuchado algo sobre ella o sobre artistas españoles?
R: ¡Oooo eso suena genial! ¡No he oído hablar de la escena en el sur de España, pero me encantaría unirme!
WS: Talking about live acts, here in Spain there is an established drum and bass scene in the Southern part (Andalucia). Have you heard anything about it or about Spanish artists?
R: Oooo that sounds great! I’ve not heard about the scene in the south of Spain but I would love to come join!
WS: Antes de irnos, es inevitable hablar de la pandemia. Ha habido artistas que han aprovechado la cuarentena para empujarse a trabajar en un montón de música, otros que se han tomado un merecido descanso… ¿Cómo ha afectado esta situación a tu carrera?
R: Para ser sincero, creo que me lo he tomado bien. Tuve el COVID en marzo de 2020, justo cuando íbamos a anunciar mi primera gira internacional, después de eso, pasé los siguientes 12 meses en el estudio produciendo música para un año. ¡Ahora ya tengo todo el año programado! Así que me he tomado algo de tiempo libre recientemente y he disfrutado viajando a algunos lugares geniales para acampar y nadar en la naturaleza en el Reino Unido. ¡Looovleh!
WS: Before we go, it’s inevitable to talk about the pandemic. There’ve been artists who have used quarantine to push themselves to work on loads of music, others who took a well deserved rest,… How has this situation affected your career?
R: To be honest, I feel like I’ve taken it on the chin well. I got COVID back in March 2020 just about when we were going to announce my first international tour, after that, I spent the next 12 months in the studio producing a year’s worth of music. My full year is now locked and scheduled! So I’ve been taking some time off recently and enjoying traveling to some cool camping and wild swimming spots in the UK. Looovleh!
