Desde Wololo Sound siempre hemos intentado abarcar la gran variedad de subgéneros que componen la música que más nos gusta, entre ellos el deep house, un estilo cada vez más en auge capaz de transmitir sensaciones de paz y serenidad con sus melodías calmadas y elementos instrumentales. ¿Pero qué artistas realmente lo representan? Algunos como el alemán Rezident ya llevan tiempo apareciendo en labels como Anjunadeep o Spinnin’ Deep, y hoy nos cuenta a través de este Q&A su recorrido en la escena.
Wololo Sound – ¡Hola David! Es un placer para nosotros tenerte en este Q&A para hablar sobre tu trayectoria musical, muy ligada a algunos de los sellos más reconocidos de la industria. Pero para aquellos que no te conozcan, ¿quién es Rezident y qué es lo que le ha traído hasta la escena electrónica?
Rezident – Soy un productor/DJ del sur de Alemania. Mi sonido está muy bien descrito en mi biografía de Spotify y eso es genial porque me cuesta describirlo yo mismo. Diría que hago deep house, es melódico y relajado por lo general.
Siempre he pensado que la producción musical o los medios digitales en general son emocionantes. Cuando era más joven, la música electrónica ya se estaba haciendo muy grande y se pinchaba en todas partes. Desde que supe que se hacía en ordenador (y yo era un poco adicto al PC en ese momento) realmente quise averiguar cómo se hacía. Más tarde descargué FL Studio y para mí era como un videojuego más por aquel entonces. También me gustaban la animación y el modelado 3D/edición de vídeo, pero al final me quedé con la música porque me divertía mucho haciéndola.
Actualmente todavía hago un poco de trabajo de redes para el proyecto Rezident cuando hago livestreams o contenido de redes sociales en general, y eso también es siempre es divertido. Pero la música es, por supuesto, lo principal.
Wololo Sound – Hi David! It’s a pleasure for us to have you in this Q&A to talk about your musical career, which is closely linked to some of the most recognized labels in the industry. But for those who don’t know you, who is Rezident and what has brought him to the electronic music scene?
Rezident – I’m a producer/DJ from southern Germany! My sound is described very nicely in my Spotify bio and that’s great because I have a hard time describing it myself. I’d say I make deep house, it’s melodic and relaxed usually.
I’ve always found music production or digital media in general exciting. When I was younger, electronic music was already becoming really big and it was being played everywhere. Since I knew it was made on a computer (and I was a bit pc-addicted at the time) I really wanted to figure out how it’s done. Later I downloaded FL Studio and it felt just like another video game at the time. I was also into animations & 3d modelling / video editing but eventually stuck with music because I had most fun doing that.
Nowadays I still get to do a bit of media work for the Rezident-project when managing live-streams or social-media content in general, and that’s always fun too. But music is of course the main thing.
WS – Como todo artista, debes haber tenido a algunos productores y djs que te han servido de ejemplo y motivación para llegar a donde estás hoy. ¿Quién dirías que te ha inspirado más?
R – Han sido muchas personas en diferentes fases de mi vida. Por supuesto, todo comenzó con los grandes artistas del ‘EDM’: Avicii, Calvin Harris, David Guetta, etc. Probablemente tenía entre 11 y 15 años en ese entonces. Esto me llevó más tarde a deadmau5, que me introdujo en el progressive house/trance y es todavía de donde viene gran parte de mi base. Con el tiempo, indagué un poco más y descubrí diferentes subgéneros/estilos, algunos de mis artistas favoritos en ese momento fueron Hot Since 82, Stephan Bodzin, Bonobo, Bicep, Kiasmos, etc.
Hoy en día hay un montón de canciones particulares y artistas que me inspiran y siempre es una gran sensación pincharlos en mis sets. Creo que todo eso todavía se refleja de alguna manera en mi música en términos de composición, diseño de sonido o progresión/arreglos.
WS – Like every artist, you must have had some producers and djs who have served as an example and motivation to get where you are today. Who would you say has inspired you the most?
R – It’s been a lot of people in different phases of my life. Of course, it started with the really big ‘EDM’ Artists: Avicii, Calvin Harris, David Guetta etc. I was probably about 11-15 back then. This later brought me to deadmau5, which introduced me to progressive house / trance and it’s still where a lot of my foundation comes from. Eventually I dug a bit deeper and discovered different subgenres/styles, some of my favorite artists at the time were Hot Since 82, Stephan Bodzin, Bonobo, Bicep, Kiasmos, etc.
Nowadays there’s a lot of individual songs & artists that inspire me and it’s always a great feeling to play those records in DJ-Sets! I think all of that is still reflected somewhere in my music in terms of songwriting, sound design or progression/arrangement.
WS – Lo primero que llama la atención es tu creciente presencia en Anjunadeep, el label que acoge la rama deep house de Above & Beyond. ¿Cómo conseguiste hacerte un hueco en la destacada discográfica? ¿Te ha ayudado a conseguir más visibilidad?
R – Hice la canción ‘Pure’ y se la envié a algunos amigos/DJ’s y de alguna forma fue reenviada a Anjunadeep y acabó siendo mi primer lanzamiento ahí.
Llegar a los sellos puede ser difícil, ¡así que por supuesto que estoy muy feliz de que haya funcionado! Anjunadeep tiene una gran comunidad, y tuve la oportunidad no sólo de sacar música, sino también de hacer algunos dj-mixes y una sesión de producción para ellos.
WS – The first thing that catches our attention is your growing presence in Anjunadeep, Above & Beyond’s sublabel that hosts deep house. How did you manage to get a place in the prominent label? Has it helped you to get more visibility?
R – I made the track ‘Pure’ and sent it to some friends/DJ’s and somehow it was forwarded to Anjunadeep and ended up as my first release there!
Getting through to labels can be hard, so of course I’m really happy it worked out! Anjunadeep has a great community, and I had the chance to not only release music but also do some dj-mixes and a production session for them.
WS – Siguiendo la anterior pregunta, ¿cómo fue el proceso de producción de tu EP ‘Chapters’? ¿Podemos esperar más estrenos en Anjuna?
R – Mientras hacía el EP ‘Chapters’, me sumergí en el aspecto de la producción en directo y experimenté con controladores y sintetizadores MIDI. Los temas salieron sobre todo en sesiones de improvisación y es probablemente por eso que son un poco más minimalistas y de club que mis anteriores lanzamientos. Y sí, ¡hay más en camino!
WS – Following the previous question, how was the production process of your EP ‘Chapters’? Can we expect more releases in Anjuna?
R – While making the ‘Chapters’ EP, I was diving into the live-aspect of music production and experimenting with Midi-Controllers & Synths. The tracks came together mostly in jam-sessions and that’s probably also why they are a bit more minimalistic and clubbier than my previous releases. And yes, there is more on the way!
WS – También tu sonido ha dejado huella en otros como Spinnin’ Deep, con el release de tu compilación de dos temas llamada ‘Perspective’. ¿Qué nos puedes contar sobre él?
R – Sí, ¡también estoy feliz por ese lanzamiento! ‘Perspective’ EP salió a principios de este año, pero parece que hace mucho más. Ha sido un año extraño.
WS – Your sound has also left its mark on others such as Spinnin’ Deep, with the release of your two-track compilation called ‘Perspective’. What can you tell us about it?
R – Yeah, I’m happy about that release as well! The ‘Perspective’ EP came out in the beginning of this year! Feels a lot longer right now, it has been a weird year.
WS – Por último, nos gustaría hablar de tu país, Alemania, en el que cada día están más en auge subgéneros contundentes como el techno o el hardstyle. ¿Qué se siente al representar un estilo como el tuyo en un lugar en el que reinan otros “más potentes”? ¿Qué opinas sobre el ligero ascenso de los ritmos deep house y house a bajo tempo este pasado verano?
R – Creo que la música electrónica está bastante establecida en Alemania en general, especialmente en Berlín. Muchos fabricantes de hardware y software (Ableton, Native Instruments, etc.) tienen sus oficinas principales en Berlín también.
No creo que haya competencia entre los subgéneros en absoluto. Es más bien lo contrario: más música diferente es mejor para todos y para la comunidad en general. Por ejemplo, la mayoría de eventos probablemente no querrían hardstyle en hora punta, en todos los escenarios y todo el tiempo. En ese sentido, el deep house es genial porque puede ser relajante y bailable al mismo tiempo.
WS – Finally, we would like to talk about your country, Germany, where strong sub-genres like techno or hardstyle are on the rise. How does it feel to represent a style like yours in a place where other “more powerful” ones reign? What do you think about the slight rise of deep house and house rhythms at low tempo this past summer?
R – I think electronic music is pretty strong in Germany in general, especially in Berlin. A lot of hardware and software manufacturers (Ableton, Native Instruments, etc.) have their main offices in Berlin as well.
I don’t think there’s a competition between the subgenres at all though. It’s kind of the opposite: more different music is better for everyone and the community in general. For example, most events probably wouldn’t want to play peak-time hardstyle on all stages and all the time. In that sense deep house is actually great because it can be relaxing and dance-able at the same time.
