Wololo Sound entrevista a Murdock, artista y DJ de drum and bass reconocido en toda Europa y una de las mentes tras Rampage, el mayor evento de dubstep y drum and bass del mundo
Rampage 2020 ya está en marcha. Y tras la última visita a nuestra tierra de Murdock, una de las mentes brillantes tras el proyecto que a día de hoy es la mayor fiesta de drum and bass y dubstep del mundo, no pudimos dejar pasar la oportunidad de hablar con Hans sobre su faceta artística y, por supuesto, organizativa. Su nuevo álbum ‘Stronger‘, su rol en Rampage, qué podemos esperar de esta nueva edición, también de su Open Air, los artistas más demandados… Todo esto y más, aquí abajo:
Wololo Sound: Hola Hans, muchas gracias por concedernos esta entrevista. En primer lugar, te tenemos que preguntar sobre ‘Stronger‘, tu álbum debut que acaba de salir. ¿Cómo te sientes respecto al resultado final?
Murdock: ¡Estoy contento de que finalmente haya salido! He pasado mucho tiempo trabajando en él y pienso que podría haber sido lanzado mucho antes, pero supongo que todo pasa por algo. Me gustaría que hubiese representado más facetas de mí como DJ y artista de drum & bass, porque siempre le doy muchas vueltas, y el álbum acabó siendo muy comercial y con una base flexible. Pero supongo que en la época actual era lo más inteligente que podía hacer. Ha habido mucho apoyo con el lanzamiento hasta ahora, así que estoy muy feliz con el hype que se está construyendo.
Wololo Sound: Hello Hans and thank you so much for giving us this interview. First of all, we have to ask you about ‘Stronger’ your debut album that just came out. How do you feel about the final result?
Murdock: I am happy it is finally here! It has been a long time coping and I feel it could have been released a lot earlier but I guess everything happens for a reason. I would have liked for it to represent more facets of me as a drum&bass dj and artist, because I always play across the board, and the album ended up being very dancefloor and liquid based, but in today’s streaming era I guess ut was the smart move. There has been a lot of support on the release so far, so I am very happy with the hype that’s been building.
WS: Aunque ‘Stronger’ es principalmente drum and bass, también podemos encontrar algunos toques de música house en ‘Panic Attack‘ y halftime hip-hop en ‘Dark Cloud‘. ¿Qué intentabas conseguir al producir este álbum?
Murdock: Todo eso pasó por casualidad. Me gustan muchos tipos de música y fue inevitable que algunos de ellos se colaran en el proceso de producción. Quería reunir una colección de canciones que realmente me representaran y ofrecieran suficiente diversidad para alguien que se siente a escucharlo (o que baile) de principio a fin, y tener algunas pequeñas excursiones (como el house o el hip-hop que) seguramente ayudaría a conseguirlo.
WS: Although ‘Stronger’ is drum and bass-based, we can also find some touches of house music in ‘Panic Attack‘ and halftime hip-hop in ‘Dark Cloud‘. What were you trying to get while producing this album?
Murdock: All of those are things that just happened. I love many different kinds of music and it was inevitable that some of them would seep into the production process. I wanted to put together a collection of songs that really represented me and offered enough diversity for anyone to sit through (or dance through) from the beginning till the end, and having a few little excursions into other territories (like house and hip-hop) would surely help accomplish that.
WS: Tenemos que preguntarte sobre nuestro país. Estuviste aquí hace apenas mes y medio para Dub Elements & Friends. ¿Cuál fue tu impresión de la escena de drum and bass aquí? ¿Habías oído algo antes sobre ella?
Murdock: Me lo pasé de lujo en Dub Elements & Friends. Gran localización, gran sistema de sonido e increíble ambiente. Me encanta muchísimo España: Barcelona, Madrid, Cádiz, Alicante, Bilbao y por supuesto Sevilla: la gente, el ambiente, la lengua, ¡y sobre todo la comida! He conocido a Dub Elements durante mucho tiempo, por supuesto, y España se coló en mi radar hace años cuando 10 fans españoles me sorprendieron en Tomorrowland llevando una camiseta que decía “Don’t panic, Murdock is mixing” cuando estaba pinchando en el escenario de Netsky & Friends. Es un momento que nunca olvidaré.
WS: We have to ask you about our country. You were here just a month and a half ago for Dub Elements & Friends. What was your impression about the drum and bass scene here? Had you heard something about our scene before?
Murdock: I had an amazing time at Dub Elements & Friends. Great location, great soundsystem, amazing vibes. I love Spain a lot: Barcelona, Madrid, Cadiz, Alicante, Bilbao and of course Sevilla: the people, the atmosphere, the language and definitely the food! I have known Dub Elements for a long time of course, and Spain got onto my radar a few years ago when 10 Spanish fans surprised me at Tomorrowland all wearing a shirt that said “Don’t panic, Murdock is mixing” when I was playing the Netsky & Friends stage. That’s a moment I will never forget.
WS: Claramente también tenemos que preguntarte sobre Rampage. Eres una de las grandes mentes tras la mayor fiesta de drum and bass y dubstep del mundo, que cumple 11 años en 2020. ¿Esperabas llegar a este punto con Rampage cuando empezaste?
Murdock: No, por supuesto que no. Empezó relativamente pequeño y sin ambición: simplemente una fiesta con los DJs adecuados y una buena mezcla de diferentes estilos de drum and bass y algo de dubstep. Pero funcionó y la gente adecuada se involucró, y en cierto punto alguien nuevo se me unió en la organización. Esa persona fue clave en llevarlo al siguiente nivel. Y cuando organizamos la primera en el Lotto Arena, con gran producción y mucha gente en el cartel, sentimos que de verdad estábamos creando algo.
WS: We obviously need to ask you about Rampage too. You are one of the big minds behind the biggest drum and bass and dubstep party in the world, which turns 11 years-old in 2020. Did you expect to go this big with Rampage when you started?
Murdock: No, of course not. It started out relatively small and unambitious: just a good party with the right DJs and a good mix of different styles of drum & bass and some dubstep. But it caught on and the right people got involved, and at some point someone new joined me in the organisation. That guy was instrumental in taking in to the next level. And when we first set up at Lotto Arena, with the big production and tons of people on the line-up, I felt we were really onto something.
WS: Después de un exitoso y gran décimo aniversario, ¿aún queda margen para crecer?
Murdock: Rampage Open Air será segurísimo mayor este año, y el del Sportpaleis va a agotar las entradas más rápido que nunca. Así que aún hay margen para el crecimiento, sí. Pero todo depende de lo que la gente quiera. Si hay más gente que quiera venir, intentaremos acogerlos. Pero crecer no es el objetivo; hacer que todo sea cada vez mejor es el verdadero reto.
WS: After such a successful and big 10th year anniversary, do you think there’s still room to go bigger?
Murdock: Rampage Open Air will surely be bigger this year, and the Sportpaleis show is going to sell out faster than before. So there’s still room for growth, yes. But it all depends on what the people want. If more people want to come, we will try to accommodate them. But growing is not the goal; making it better every time is the real challenge.
WS: Ya conocemos grandes nombres para Rampage 2020, como el show audiovisual de Virtual Riot o el b2b austriaco que traen Camo & Krooked y Mefjus. ¿Qué más podemos esperar?
Murdock: Para cuando salga esta entrevista, prácticamente todo el mundo está anunciado. Creo que es el mayor line-up que hemos tenido jamás. Muchas superestrellas de drum and bass y dubstep, y muchos de ellos están planeando shows especiales que solo los verás en Rampage, o exclusivas mundiales. Mucho de lo que va a pasar el 13 y 14 de marzo no se habrá visto antes y algunas cosas no se verán otra vez.
WS: We already know many big things for Rampage 2020, such as Virtual Riot’s audiovisual show premiere and the Austrian b2b that Mefjus and Camo & Krooked are bringing. What else can we expect?
Murdock: By the time this interview is released, pretty much everyone will be announced. I think it is the biggest line-up we have ever had. A lot of superstars of drum&bass and dubstep, and so many of them are planning special shows that will be unique to Rampage, or world premieres. A lof of what’s going to happen on March 13 and 14 will have never been seen before and some of it will never be seen again after it.
WS: Rampage ha empezado a ir de tour este año, con algunas fechas en Reino Unido. ¿Va a expandirse al resto de Europa? ¿Es posible que tengamos una fiesta oficial de Rampage en España?
Murdock: Mucha gente de España viene a Rampage – ¡cada año más! Así que quién sabe, si encontramos la combinación correcta de compañeros, localización y logística, podría pasar. Un gran club de Ibiza ha estado encima nuestra para que hagamos algo ahí, ¡así que quizás vayamos a una isla cercana el próximo verano! El tour de Reino Unido fue organizado por el territorio tan especial que es ese país, en lo que a drum and bass se refiere. Sentía que no teníamos el reconocimiento de nuestra marca que tenemos en otros países, así que ir de gira parecía una buena manera de plantar la bandera ahí.
WS: Rampage has started going on-tour this year, with some dates in the UK. Is it going to expand to the rest of Europe? Is it possible that we are getting an official Rampage event in Spain?
Murdock: A lot of people from Spain come to Rampage – more every year! So who knows, if we find the right combination of partners, location and logistics, it might happen. A big club in Ibiza has been on our case about doing something there, so maybe we’ll come to an island near you next summer! The UK club tour was mainly set up because of the special territory that country is, when it comes to drum&bass. I felt like we didn’t have the brand recognition over there that we have in other countries, so touring the country seemed like a good way to sort of plant our flag over there.

WS: Si pudieras hacer un line-up con solo cinco actuaciones (pueden ser más de cinco artistas pinchando juntos), ¿cómo sería?
Murdock: Camo & Krooked (Mosaïk live) porque fue una barbaridad en Rampage – la combinación perfecta de drum and bass y techno y funk, ¡toda una experiencia! Infekt, porque para mí es el rey del riddim, puede hacer que la música más tranquila suene absolutamente brutal. ¡Pongámosle a pinchar en b2b con un icono como Benga o Caspa! DJ Marky, porque es uno de mis mayores ejemplos en el drum and bass: es muy versátil y un DJ de verdad que puede llevarte en un auténtico viaje por lo mejor del drum and bass. Caspa & Rusko con un set del tipo ‘Return To Fabric’ sería increíble. Lo presentaron en Rampage y me duele que no hayan continuado el proyecto. Y en noches así, me encantaría pinchar mi sesión también, ¡preferiblemente con Jenna G, Dynamite y MC Mota turnándose en el micro!
WS: If you could make a line-up with just five acts (it can be more than five artists playing together), how would it be?
Murdock: Camo & Krooked (Mosaïk live show) because that was just mind blowing at Rampage – the perfect combo of drum & bass and techno and funk, and such a trip! Infekt, because to me he is the king of riddim, he can make laid back music sound absolutely brutal. Let’s get him to play b2b with an icon like Benga or Caspa! DJ Marky, because he is one of my biggest examples in drum & bass, he’s very versatile, and a true dj that can take you on a proper journey through the best of drum & bass. Caspa & Rusko with a ‘Return to Fabric’ type set would be incredible. They premiered it at Rampage and I’m sorry that they haven’t continued that project. And on a night like this, I would love to play a set as well, preferably with Jenna G, Dynamite and MC Mota taking turns on the mic!
WS: ¿Cuáles son tus artistas de drum and bass y dubstep favoritos ahora mismo?
Murdock: Me encanta ver a artistas belgas que están empezando a destacar con sonidos únicos: D-Nasty, Andromedik, Danger, Used y Basstripper, ¡por nombrar algunos! ¡¡Y por supuesto mi buen amigo Doctrine!!
WS: Which are your favourite drum and bass and dubstep artists right now?
Murdock: I love how a lot of the Belgian acts are coming through with very unique sounds: D-Nasty, Andromedik, Danger, Used, Basstripper to name a few! And of course my main man Doctrine!!
WS: Ahora vamos con unas cuantas preguntas cortas:
Comida favorita: Cambia con el tiempo y depende de cómo me sienta, pero me encanta el aguacate y el marisco; y lo mejor que he comido últimamente son los Pinky Bratwurst del Vegan Junk Food Bar. De Cádiz, me acuerdo que la morcilla era increíble, y me encantan también las cachupas de Cabo Verde. También cualquier cosa hecha con batata, y el lomo de bife (pero solo en Argentina o Brasil), y un buen estofado casero es imbatible también. ¡La verdad es que me canta la comida!
Lugar favorito: Mi casa. Es donde tengo montado mi equipo de DJ, es donde están mi mujer y mi hija, y es donde puedo relajarme.
Ciudad favorita para vivir: De mis viajes Lisboa me ha impactado mucho como la combinación ideal de la eficiencia de Occidente y la relajación de África. Pero en serio, me encanta vivir en Bélgica, donde combinamos lo mejor de lo que nos rodea y lo que nos dejaron todo lo de los países que nos colonizaron en el pasado.
Clásico favorito de drum and bass: La verdad es que es una pregunta imposible. Pero el tema que me enganchó en 1994 fue ‘Original Nuttah‘, de SHY FX y UK Apachi.
Clásico favorito de dubstep: Esta es jodida también, pero voy a ir con ‘Cockney Thug‘ de Rusko.
Artista favorito para hacer B2B: Hmmm… Diría que con A.M.C, Cyantific o Maduk.
Subgénero de drum and bass favorito: Debo ir con liquid/dancefloor porque es el que más libertad me da, porque me encantan los rollers oscuros, un poco de neurofunk y también el jump up.
WS: Now let’s go with some short questions:
Favourite food: that differs from time to time and depending on mood, but I do love avocado and seafood, and the best thing I’ve eaten lately must have been the Pinky Bratwurst from the Vegan Junk Food Bar. From Cadiz, I remember the morcilla being incredible, and I love me some Capeverdian kachupa. Also anything made of sweet potato, and then there’s bife de lomo (but only in Argentina or Brasil), and good homemade stew is unbeatable too. I just really love food, to be honest!!
Favourite place: home. It’s where my DJ gear is set up, it’s where my girls are, it’s where I can unwind.
Favourite city to live: from my travels Lisbon has always struck me as the ideal combination of western efficiency and an African relaxedness. But really, I love to live in Belgium, where we combine the best of everything that surrounds us and everything the countries that colonised us in the past has left us with.
Favourite drum and bass classic ever: Impossible question really. But the track that got me hooked in 1994 was ‘Original Nuttah‘ by Shy FX and UK Apachi.
Favourite dubstep classic ever: very tough one too, but I’m going to go with ‘Cockney Thug‘ by Rusko.
Favourite artist to go B2B with: hmmm… I’d go with either A.M.C, Cyantific or Maduk.
Favourite drum and bass sub-genre: gotta go with liquid/dancefloor because it’s the one that allows for the most different vibes, because I do love me some dark rollers, bits of neuro and jump-up too.
