La temporada de entrevistas continúa con una de las revelaciones inglesas del momento. La sensación del tech-house James Hype nos atendió en nuestro paso por WORLD CLUB DOME Winter Edition para contarnos más sobre sus skills como DJ, sus streamings y sus planes para la temporada 2023.
Wololo Sound – Hola James, ¡gracias por estar aquí en esta entrevista con nosotros! Estamos en WORLD CLUB DOME, uno de los mayores eventos indoor de Europa. ¿Cómo se presenta el set de hoy? Vas a pinchar a una hora bastante temprana… ¿Qué diferencias hay para un DJ cabeza de cartel entre pinchar al final de la noche a pinchar en uno de los shows a primera hora de la tarde?
James Hype – Cuando preparé mi set de hoy, sabía que siempre que pincho en Alemania… a la gente le gusta que la música pegue fuerte, así que me aseguré de incluir esos temas llenos de energía, porque mi set es bastante temprano. Tengo que asegurarme de que progresa de más calma a más energía al final. Va de lo más house a sonidos más fuertes al final del set.
Wololo Sound – Hi James, thanks for being here in this interview with us! We are at WORLD CLUB DOME, one of the biggest indoor events in Europe. How is today’s set looking for you? You’re playing at a pretty early time…What differences does it make for a headliner DJ to play at the end of the night to play instead in one of the early afternoon shows?
James Hype – When I was putting my set together today, I know that whenever I play in Germany…people like the music to hit hard, so I was making sure that I had those big energy tunes in there, because my set’s quite early. I need to make sure that it progresses from more calm to more energy at the end so that’s something as well. It goes from more housy to more big sounds at the end of the set.
WS – Tu música ha sido increíblemente bien recibida este año con hits mundiales como ‘Disconnected’ o ‘Ferrari’, que han causado furor en redes sociales. ¿Cómo calificarías este 2022 y que parte de culpa crees que tienen estas canciones en tu éxito en redes sociales?
JH – Creo que mi 2022 ha sido bastante bueno, probablemente mejor de lo que esperaba. Creo que el éxito de las canciones se debe a que realmente he descubierto cómo crear mi propio sonido. Pienso que antes de 2022 hacía música, pero quizá no tenía las habilidades necesarias para crear mi propio sonido. Y en el transcurso de 2020 y 2021, me volví realmente bueno en el arte de hacer mi propio sonido.
WS – Your music has been incredibly well received this year with worldwide hits like ‘Disconnected’ or ‘Ferrari’, causing a lot of hype. How would you rate this 2022 and do you believe these songs are the cause of your success on social media?
JH – I think my 2022 has been pretty good, probably better than I expected it would be. I think the success of the songs is due to me really figuring out how to make my own sound. I think before 2022 I was making music but I maybe didn’t have the set of skills to perfectly make my sound. And through the course of 2020 and 2021, I got really good at my craft of making my own sound.
WS – Creemos que fuiste uno de los DJ que salió reforzado de la pandemia porque tus streamings se hicieron muy virales. ¿Cómo crees que cambió tu vida en esos meses?
JH – La pandemia fue muy interesante. Antes de la cuarentena estaba muy ocupado, hacía muchos bolos y mucha música, pero durante la pandemia pude dejar de estar ocupado, así que descubrí lo que realmente quería hacer y lo que me importaba, y así pude conectar con mi público a través de los streamings en directo.
Y fui capaz de hacer música como la que hemos hablado, que es la música que tuvo éxito en 2022. Así que me permitió volver a la casilla de salida y trabajar en lo que quería hacer en este mundo de la música dance, y cómo hacerlo.
WS – We think you were one of the DJs who came out of the pandemic somehow stronger because your streamings became very viral. How do you think your life changed in these months?
JH – The pandemic was very interesting. Because I was busy before the pandemic, I did a lot of shows and I made a lot of music, but through the pandemic I was able to not be busy, so I was able to work out what I really wanted to do and what mattered to me, and through that, I was able to connect with my audience with the live streams.
And I was able to make music like we’ve discussed, which is the music that was successful in 2022. So it allowed me to go back to the drawing board and work out what what I wanted to do in this dance music world, and how to do it.
WS – Probablemente tu seña de identidad es la gran habilidad que tienes en los platos. ¿Sigues practicando y aprendiendo cosas nuevas? ¿Qué consejos le darías a un nuevo DJ que quiera aprender a mezclar como James Hype?
JH – Practico cosas nuevas si voy a grabarlas. Si voy a pinchar un set y voy a grabarlo, lo primero que hago es practicar. Pero otras veces me invento algo en el avión y lo hago por primera vez en el concierto. A menudo es así.
Si quieres aprender a pinchar como yo, tienes que aprender antes lo básico. Hay que andar antes de correr, así que hay que saber mezclar y seleccionar canciones antes de pasar al nivel avanzado. De lo contrario, es fácil que montes un gran desastre.
WS – Probably your hallmark is the great skill you have on the decks. Are you still practicing and learning new stuff? What tips would you give to a new dj who wants to learn how to mix like James Hype?
JH – I practice new stuff if I’m gonna film it. So if I’m playing a set and I’m gonna film the set then I’ll practice first. But other times, I will make something up on the plane and then do it for the first time at the show. You know, quite often it’s like that.
If you want to learn to DJ like me then you need to learn the basics before. You need to walk before you can run, so you need to be good at the basics of mixing and the basics of selecting records before you can then take it to the advanced level. Otherwise, it’s easy to make a big mess.
WS – Y por último, pero no menos importante, estamos a punto de dar la bienvenida a un nuevo año. ¿Qué retos te quedan por alcanzar en 2023? ¿Cómo se presenta este nuevo año para ti?
JH – Para mí, 2023 consiste en hacer música de la que me sienta orgulloso y que la gente siga queriendo escuchar dentro de 10 años. Si puedo hacerlo de forma que conecte con cientos de millones de personas como lo he hecho este año, entonces seré muy, muy feliz.
WS – And last but not least, we are about to welcome a new year. What challenges do you still have left to achieve in 2023? How does this new year look like for you?
JH – For me 2023 is about making music that I am proud of and that people will still want to listen to in 10 years time. If I can do that in a way that connects with hundreds of millions of people like I did this year, then I’ll be very, very happy.
