En nuestra nueva entrevista hemos tenido la oportunidad de charlar con uno de los dúos más conocidos dentro del progressive house: Matisse & Sadko. Muy unidos al sello musical de Martin Garrix, STMPD RCRDS, los hermanos rusos nos hablan, entre muchas otras cosas, sobre qué es la música para ellos, su último lanzamiento, la familia de STMPD RCRDS y, por supuesto, sobre algo que debe estar al caer junto al mismo Martin Garrix. Sin más dilación, os presentamos última entrevista.
Entrevista a Matisse & Sadko / Interview with Matisse & Sadko:
WOLOLO SOUND – ¡Hola! Es un placer para nosotros entrevistaros. Empecemos hablando de vosotros: ya conocemos a Matisse & Sadko pero ¿podríais contarnos algo acerca de Alexander y Yury Parkhomenko? ¿Quiénes sois?
MATISSE & SADKO – Bueno, somos dos hermanos de San Petesburgo cuya pasión es la música y estamos contentos porque nos encanta lo que hacemos y hacemos lo que nos encanta. La música nos da la oportunidad de viajar alrededor del mundo y compartirla con nuestra audiencia y nuestros fans.
WOLOLO SOUND – Hello! It’s a pleasure for us to interview you. Let’s start speaking about you: we already know Matisse & Sadko but could you tell us something about Alexander and Yury Parkhomenko? Who are you?
MATISSE & SADKO – Well, we are brothers from St. Petersburg who have passion for music and we are happy because we love what we do and we do what we love. Music provides us with an opportunity to travel around the world and share it with our listeners and fans.
WS – Entre hermanos, es bastante común tener discusiones absurdas. ¿Cómo es trabajar entre hermanos? ¿Es fácil para vosotros o soléis tener discusiones normalmente?
MATISSE – ¡Somos un dúo perfecto! Hablando de producción musical, cada uno de nosotros tiene sus propias responsabilidades. Yo [Matisse] soy bueno componiendo acordes, melodías principales y haciendo arreglos. Sin embargo, Sadko se encarga de la estructura del tema, fx, mezclas y mastering. Pero, de hecho, me encanta sacar de quicio a Yury cuando tengo la oportunidad de hacerlo. Afortunadamente, nuestras discusiones nunca han acabado en peleas. Siempre intentamos resolver cualquier conflicto de forma pacífica. Después de todo, somos hermanos.
WS – It is common between siblings to have absurd or silly arguments. How does it feel to work among brothers? Is it easy for you or do you normally have arguments?
MATISSE – We are a perfect duo! Each of us has his own responsibilities when it comes to music production. I’m good at composing chords, lead melodies and building arrangements around them. Sadko is in charge of the structure of the track, fx, mixing and mastering. But indeed I love getting on Yury’s nerves when I have a chance to do it. Fortunately, our arguments never ended up with fighting. We always try to settle any conflict peacefully. After all, we’re brothers.

WS – Acabáis de lanzar un nuevo single llamado ‘Fade Away’. Hemos leído que os entró la inspiración en un viaje a Ámsterdam, ¿es cierto? ¿Nos podríais contar algo más acerca de vuestro último trabajo?
SADKO – Ámsterdam es nuestro lugar favorito del mundo. La emoción que sentimos cuando sabemos que vamos a ir pronto es imposible de describir. Tiene una atmósfera mágica y especial, y un sentimiento de libertad. Y por supuesto, nos inspiramos muchísimo cuando paseamos a través de sus calles y canales. Muchos de nuestros amigos viven allí y siempre estamos contentos de poder verles. Un día estábamos tomando un café por uno de los canales y Alex me dijo que tenía una melodía en mente y que deberíamos intentar tocarla en el piano. Fue la melodía principal que vosotros ahora podéis escuchar en ‘Fade Away’. A veces solo es necesario pillar un buen momento y la melodía te vendrá sola.
WS – You have just released a new single called ‘Fade Away’. We have read that you got the inspiration from a trip to Amsterdam, is that right? Could you tell us something more about this last track of yours?
SADKO – Amsterdam is our favourite place in the world. It’s impossible to describe our excitement when we know we would go there soon. It has some special magic atmosphere and feeling of freedom. And of course we are inspired greatly when we walk along its streets and canals. Many of our friends live there and we’re always happy to see them. One day we were drinking coffee by one of the canals and Alex told me that a melody had stuck on his mind and we should definitely try to play this tune on the piano. It was the lead melody which you now can hear in ‘Fade Away’. Sometimes you just need to catch the right moment and the melody will come to you by itself.
WS – Os hicisteis famosos produciendo progressive house y aunque la mayoría de vuestros grandes temas son de este género, os hemos visto producir otros estilos como bass o big room. ¿Con qué género musical estáis más cómodos tanto a la hora de producir como de pinchar?
M&S – Sí, la mayoría de las veces estamos “catalogados” como productores de progressive house pero nos gusta experimentar con varios géneros. No podemos decir que este o aquel género es más o menos cómodo. Nos gusta la música en su totalidad y nos gusta hacerla y ponerla sin tener en cuenta el estilo. Por supuesto, cuando pinchamos en festivales, la gente se espera que pongamos temas de progressive house pero si es un show en un club, a veces tampoco nos importa poner tech house o incluso temas retro, sobre todo al final del set.
WS – You became well known by producing progressive house and most of your big tracks are of this genre, but we have seen that you have produced other styles such as bass or big room. Which musical genre are you more comfortable with either producing or playing?
M&S – Yes, most of the times we are associated as progressive house producers but we like to experiment on various genres. We can’t say that this or that genre is more comfortable or less comfortable. We love music as a whole and we love making and playing music regardless of the style. Of course, when we play at festivals, people are likely to expect progressive house tracks from us but if it is a club show, sometimes we don’t mind playing tech house or even some retro songs especially at the end of the set.
WS – Habéis colaborado varias veces con Martin Garrix en temas como ‘Forever’, ‘Dragon’ o ‘Together’ y se rumorea que tenéis otra colaboración muy cerca. ¿Es esto cierto? Si es así, ¿nos podéis contar algo más acerca de ello? ¿Alguna información exclusiva?
M&S – Martin es un amigo cercano y nos encanta trabajar juntos en el estudio. Trabajamos en algunas ideas de colaboración durante el ADE sobre las que pronto escucharéis algo. ¡Creemos que ya sabéis de qué tema se trata jaja!
WS – You have collaborated several times with Martin Garrix in tracks such as ‘Forever’, ‘Dragon’ or ‘Together’ and it is rumored that you have another collab coming soon. Is this true? If yes, could you tell us something more about it? Any exclusive information?
M&S – Martin is our close friend and we love working together in the studio. We worked on a few collaborative ideas during ADE and you will hear something fresh in soon. We think you already guess what track this is haha!
WS – Sabemos que vuestra relación con Martijn es muy buena. ¿Cómo os conocisteis? ¿Cómo es pertenecer a la familia de STMPD RCRDS?
M&S – Conocimos a Martijn por primera vez en el Sensation White Festival en Rusia hará como 6 años. En el backstage, vino a donde nosotros para darnos feedback positivo acerca de nuestros últimos lanzamientos, fue totalmente inesperado. Unos días después, le mandamos algunas de nuestras ideas y le gustaron. Así es como elaboramos nuestras dos primeras colaboraciones – ‘Dragon’ y ‘Break Through The Silence’. En cuanto a STMPD, estáis totalmente en lo cierto. No es solo un sello, es nuestra familia y estamos muy contentos de poder formar parte de ella.
WS – We know that your relationship with Martijn is really good. How did you meet him? How does it feel to be in the STMPD RCRDS family?
M&S – We first met Martijn at Sensation White Festival in Russia around 6 years ago. He came up to us at the backstage and gave a positive feedback on our recent releases and it was totally unexpected. A few days later we sent him some of our ideas and he liked them. That was how we came up with our first two collabs – ‘Dragon’ and ‘Break Through The Silence’. As for STMPD, you’re absolutely right. It’s not just a label, it’s our family and we’re really happy to be a part of it.
Matisse & Sadko y Robert Falcon colaboran en ‘Another Side’
WS – Echando la mirada hacia atrás, colaborasteis con Steve Angello en ‘SLVR’, tema que fue el lanzamiento número 100 de su discográfica Size Records. ¿Cómo fue trabajar con un artista como Steve en un tema que era tan especial?
M&S – El progressive house se hizo popular gracias a Swedish House Mafia. Los temas de Steve siempre nos han inspirado. Por eso queríamos colaborar con él. Tenemos los mismos gustos musicales, por lo que fue fácil trabajar con él y esperamos que esta no sea nuestra última colaboración. Nos encanta su visión de la música.
WS – Looking back, you collaborated with Steve Angello in ‘SLVR’, which was the release number 100 of his label Size Records. How did it feel to work with an artist like Steve in a track that was so special?
M&S – Progressive house became popular thanks to Swedish House Mafia. Steve’s tracks have always inspired us. That’s why we wanted to collaborate with him. We have the same music tastes so it was easy to work with him, so we hope this is not our last collab. We love his vision of music.
WS – El ADE terminó hace no mucho y vosotros tuvisteis vuestra propia fiesta. ¿Cómo ha sido la experiencia de tener vuestro propio evento con artistas como Dimitri Vangelis & Wyman, DubVision, Arty, Magnificence…?
M&S – Fue nuestra primera experiencia siendo los anfitriones de una fiesta del ADE. ¡Ni nos esperábamos que las entradas de nuestro show se acabaran incluso dos semanas antes del evento! Dar las gracias especialmente a nuestros amigos cercanos y a nuestro equipo que fueron parte de la locura de esa noche. ¡No sería posible sin ellos! Después del show leímos cientos de comentarios positivos. Definitivamente, ¡tenemos que organizar otra para el año que viene!
WS – The ADE has recently finished and you’ve had your own party. What has it been like the experience of having your own party with artists such as Dimitri Vangelis & Wyman, DubVision, Arty, Magnificence…?
M&S – It was the first experience to host our own ADE party. We couldn’t even expect the show would be sold out two weeks before the event! Specials thanks to our close friends and our team who became a part of this insanity that night. It wouldn’t be possible without them! We read tons of positive comments after the show. We definitely have to arrange another one next year!
