El pasado 1 de noviembre estuvimos en una nueva cita de elrow en Barcelona, con Joris Voorn a la cabeza del cartel. Minutos después de su actuación, nos desplazamos hasta Bridge_48, donde el holandés realizó una pequeña presentación de su nuevo álbum, que ya hemos analizado aquí, y posteriormente atendió a nuestro medio. Lo hemos perseguido durante mucho tiempo y por fin lo hemos conseguido: ¡Wololo Sound entrevista a Joris Voorn!
Wololo Sound – ¡Hola, Joris! Es todo un honor para nosotros poder entrevistarte con motivo del lanzamiento de tu nuevo álbum. Para empezar, ¿nos podrías decir cuál es el significado que hay detrás de ‘\\\\’? ¿Cómo nació ese nombre?
Joris Voorn – Realmente no hay nada detrás del título ‘\\\\’. Es solo una forma de darle un nombre. Pero la explicación sería que utilizaba una V para mi nombre y para mi logo y en el álbum iban a estar todos los singles, 4 diferentes… Pero realmente, al final se trata de la música. No se trata del título del álbum, es solo para darle un nombre.
Wololo Sound – Hello, Joris! It is a real honor for us to interview you for the release of your new album. Which is the meaning behind ‘\\\\’? How was the name born?
Joris Voorn – There’s nothing really behind the name ‘\\\\‘. That’s just a way to give it a name. It’s because I used a ‘V’ for my name and my logo, and there was going to be all the singles, four different singles… But it’s really about the music in the end. It’s not about the album title. That’s just to give the name.
WS – Han pasado cinco años desde ‘Nobody Knows’. ¿Cómo ves tu evolución musical desde ese momento?
JV – Creo que ‘Nobody Knows’ era mucho más orgánico, tenía más instrumentos naturales, más piano… bueno, este álbum también tiene piano pero en ‘\\\\’ he vuelto a utilizar un equipo Roland de la vieja escuela, sintetizadores como el Roland Juno-106, Roland SH-101, Roland TR-909 y 808, cosas como esas. Por lo que podríamos decir que es como volver a esos instrumentos musicales icónicos que dieron forma, creo, a mucho house y techno de la década de los 90.
WS – It’s been five years since ‘Nobody Knows’. How do you see your musical evolution since then?
JV – I think that ‘Nobody Knows’ was much more organic, it had more natural instruments, more piano… well, there’s some piano on this album as well but on ‘\\\\’ I’ve gone back to using more like old school Roland gear, synthesizers such as Roland Juno-106, Roland SH-101, Roland TR-909 and 808, things like that. So we could say it is a kind of going back to this iconic musical instruments that shaped, I think, a lot of the 90’s – probably – house and techno.

WS – Personalmente, ¿cómo fue la creación de este nuevo álbum para ti? ¿Has tenido muchos dolores de cabeza con la finalización de los temas o con la elección de cuáles deberías incluir?
JV – No se trata necesariamente de qué temas deberían estar incluidos porque el sello también me ayuda con esto. Les mandé unas cuantas demos y todos juntos, elegimos qué temas incluir (y se hizo muy rápido). Sin embargo, acabar las canciones fue mucho más difícil: llegar a un nivel en el que me sintiera seguro, un nivel que fuera a funcionar… eso fue bastante complicado. Quiero decir, cuando haces un álbum, intentas dar lo mejor de ti pero de todas formas, al final nunca estás del todo contento con el resultado por lo que esa es siempre la dificultad: estar contento con la música que haces. Poniendo todo el duro trabajo y todavía estás pensando en cosas como “podría haber hecho esto y esto de otra forma”, pero es importante que aceptes que ya no puedes cambiarlo y que con las elecciones que has hecho… el resultado es el que es.
WS – How was the creation of this new album personally for you? Have you got any headaches with the completion of the songs or when choosing which ones to include?
JV – It is not necessarily about which tracks should be included because the label also helps me with this. I sent them a whole bunch of demos and together we chose which tracks to include (and it was done very quickly). However, finishing the tracks was much more difficult: getting into a level where I felt confident, a level which was going to work… that was quite difficult. I mean, when making an album you try to give the best that you have, but, in the end, you are never really happy anyway so…that is always the difficulty: being happy with the music that you make. Putting in all the hard work and you are still thinking things such as “I could have done this and this different”, but it’s important you kind of accept that you can’t change it anymore, whatever the choices you made… that’s what it is.
WS – Durante estos últimos meses has estado enseñando algunos de los temas incluidos en el álbum. ¿Qué sensaciones está transmitiendo el público con estos lanzamientos?
JV – Realmente, muy buenas. Estoy sorprendido de que a tanta gente le gustara la música. Algunos de los temas los he estado pinchando en mis sets y otros no los he puesto. Pienso que hasta ahora a la gente le ha gustado mucho, como el último single que hice, ‘Messiah’, que es un tema que no suelo pinchar. Acabo de hacer diferentes versiones a piano y creo que (una) será lanzada en diciembre. He pinchado esa (versión), pero no la original, aunque la gente la ha estado escuchando y les ha gustado.
WS – You have been slowly showing some songs included in the album during these last months. What sensations is the public transmitting to you with these releases?
JV – It is actually really good. I’m surprised that lot of people really enjoyed the music. Some of the tracks I’ve been playing them in my DJ sets and some others I’ve not played. I think so far that people really liked them, like the last single I did, ‘Messiah’, it is a track I don’t really play. Just made a piano in different versions which is going to be released, I think, in December. So I played that one but I didn’t play the original but people have been listening to it a lot and they have really enjoyed it – which is great to hear.
WS – Vamos a pasar a hablar de actuaciones: A menudo podemos verte en eventos de elrow. ¿Qué crees que ha sido lo que le ha dado a la marca su actual reconocimiento mundial?
JV – He estado pinchando para elrow desde el principio. En realidad, creo que fui uno de los DJs que abrió el club original elrow 14, que quizá fuera en 2007. Por lo tanto, ¡lo he visto crecer! Cuando todo empezó, el club se dedicaba a las afterparties y se fue convirtiendo en algo más loco. Gente de todo el mundo empezó a enterarse y empezaron a viajar… Fue muy importante que siempre mantuvieran su… se dedicaban únicamente a ser un club after-hours que traía muy buenos DJs, DJs de primera, a pinchar en su afterparty. Después, su concepto cambió totalmente pero siguieron trayendo a DJs de muy buena calidad. Y creo que esto es también lo que les ha hecho tener tanto éxito. Así que es por la música en sí pero también es un equilibrio perfecto entre la música y la producción.
WS – Let’s talk about shows now: We can see you very often in elrow events. What do you think has given the brand his current worldwide recognition?
JV – I have been playing for elrow since the very beginning. Actually I think I was one of the DJs that opened the very original elrow 14 club, this was maybe on 2007. So I have seen it grow! When it all started, the club was an after party one and it became more and more crazy. People around the world started noticing, they started travelling… It was really important that they always kept their… they were based just as an after-hours club booking great DJs, A-list DJs, to come and play for the afterparty. Later on, their whole concept changed completely but they kept booking good quality DJs. And that is what I think that made them successful as well. So it is about the music itself but it is also a very fifty-fifty balance between the music and production.
WS – Aunque pinches frecuentemente en España, no hemos visto ninguna fecha de tu tour del álbum en nuestro país. ¿Tendremos buenas noticias cuando se anuncien nuevas fechas?
JV – 100%. Volveré muy pronto a Input con motivo del álbum. Solo hemos anunciado las fechas para este año y más tarde completaremos el resto de fechas.
WS – Despite the fact that you play frequently in Spain, we haven’t seen any dates of your ‘album tour’ in our country. Will be good news given when the next announcement of dates is made?
JV – 100%. I’ll be coming back to Input very soon, for the album. We only announced dates for this year, and later we will complete all the following dates.
WS – En relación a esto, ¿cuál es tu punto de vista acerca de la escena musical de música electrónica en España? ¿Consideras que esté en buenas condiciones?
JV – Una de las cosas buenas que tiene pinchar en España es que la gente tiene mucha pasión por la música y son gente de mente abierta, algo verdaderamente refrescante porque a veces, cuando vas a otros sitios, la gente puede estar de pie en un lado, hablando. Sin embargo, aquí la gente solo disfruta de la música y baila, y también muestra su amor hacia la música a través del baile, algo que no se ve en todas partes. Eso es lo que siempre he apreciado de España, que la música es parte de su vida. Hay muchísimos sitios diferentes, pueblos más pequeños, ciudades más grandes, festivales pequeños, festivales grandes… la gente está disfrutando de la música y van al 100% por ello.
WS – Regarding this, which is your point of view about the Spanish electronic music scene? Do you think it’s in a ‘good health’ condition?
JV – One of the great things about playing in Spain is that people have a real passion for music and I think people are very open-minded, which is really refreshing because sometimes, when you’re going to other places, people might be standing on a side, speaking. Here, however, the people just really enjoy the music and dance, and they also show the love for the music through dancing – which isn’t the case everywhere. That’s what I’ve always appreciated about Spain, that the music is part of their life. There are so many different places, smaller towns, bigger cities, small festivals, big festivals…people are loving the music and they go completely 100% for it.
WS – Finalmente, después de un gran 2019 donde la parte musical ha ido sin problemas, ¿cómo quieres preparar el 2020? ¿Ya tienes algo en mente para un futuro cercano?
JV – ¡Por supuesto! Voy a seguir de tour con ‘\\\\’ unos cuantos meses más en 2020 y luego ya será verano. ¡Esto significa que Ibiza vuelve a empezar y también la temporada de festivales! Ahora mismo estoy muy centrado en el álbum y en su tour. Además, ya estoy haciendo nueva música para el siguiente álbum, los siguientes singles… solo intento hacer algo diferente. Hacer música es algo que siempre me ha gustado y seguiré haciéndolo.
WS – Finally, after a huge 2019 where the musical part has gone smoothly, how do you want to prepare 2020? Do you already have something in mind for the near future?
JV – Of course! I’m going to keep touring ‘\\\\’ for another few months on 2020 and then it’s going to be summer already. This means that Ibiza starts again and the festival season too! At the moment I’m very focused on this album and touring it. Moreover, I’m already making music for the next album, next singles… just trying to do something different. Making music is something I’ve always loved doing and I will keep doing that.
WS – Para acabar, unas preguntas cortas:
WS – ¿Un artista infravalorado? // JV – Steve Rachmad, ha estado haciendo música durante más de treinta años y ha creado algunos de los mejores temas de techno.
WS – ¿Club o festival? // JV – Club, creo.
WS – ¿Show favorito hasta la fecha? // JV – Si tuviera que elegir solo uno… Awakenings, ¡me encantó!
WS – ¿Deporte y equipo favorito? // JV – El skateboard, pero no hay un equipo necesariamente. Ahora no me acuerdo de ningún nombre y no me sé los nombres de los nuevos skateboarders, ¡pero hay algunos realmente buenos!
WS – ¿El mejor hit de todos los tiempos (de cualquier género musical)? // JV – Creo que el ‘Another Brick In The Wall’ de Pink Floyd es increíble.

WS – An underrated artist? // JV – Steve Rachmad, he’s been making music for more than thirty years and he’s made some of the very best techno tracks ever.
WS – Club or festival? // JV – Club, I think.
WS – Favorite show to date? // JV – If I had to pick only one… Awakenings, I really loved that one!
WS – Favorite sport and team? // JV – Skateboarding, but there is no team necessarily. I can’t remember any of the names anymore and I don’t know names of the new skateboarders, but there are really good guys!
WS – Best hit of all times (Whatever musical genre)? // JV – I think ‘Another Brick In The Wall’ from Pink Floyd is amazing.
