Hoy tenemos el placer de entrevistar a Artur y Batish, más conocidos artísticamente como ARTBAT. El dúo ucraniano es actualmente uno de los más destacados dentro de la rama melódica del house/techno, prueba de ello son sus últimos estrenos que lo han hecho lanzar música en sellos del nivel de Afterlife, Watergate Records, Diynamic o Rukus, al igual que su alaba colaboración con Camelphat. ¡Vamos con la entrevista!
Wololo Sound: ¡Hola chicos! Esperemos que estéis bien, muchas gracias por atendernos. Empecemos hablando de vuestros orígenes. ¿Cómo os conocisteis? ¿Cómo fueron los primeros momentos de ARTBAT?
ARTBAT: Antes de nada, gracias por la invitación. Es un placer. Nos conocimos en una fiesta underground en Kiev. Unos amigos en común nos presentaron. Instantáneamente hicimos un click y simpatizamos -o mejor que la palabra “simpatizar”, fue una buena conexión.
Wololo Sound: Hi guys! Hope you are doing well! Thank you so much for having us. Let’s start talking about your beginnings. How did you meet? How were the first moments of ARTBAT?
ARTBAT: First and foremost, thanks for having us. It’s a pleasure. We have met at an underground party in Kiev. Common friends have introduced us. Instantly there was a click and sympathy. – let’s say no word sympathy, but good connection
WS: Sois de Ucrania, Woo York nos contaron que la escena solía ser más rápida y contundente. ¿Cómo es ahora? ¿Os enamorasteis de la música electrónica ahí?
A: Ambos somos amantes de la música y por supuesto nos enamoramos de la música electrónica en nuestras primeras raves allí. Pero hablando por lo general, ambos hemos estado siempre muy interesados en todo tipo de música. La escena global ha cambiado. El mejor ejemplo puede que sea Ibiza. Estamos contentos con el desarrollo y la escena musical dentro de Ucrania.
WS: You are from Ukraine and Woo York told us that the scene used to be faster and harder. How is it now? Did you fall in love with electronic music there?
A: We both are music lovers and surely fell in love with electronic music at our first raves there. But generally speaking, we were both always very interested in any kind of music. The global scene has changed. The best example might be Ibiza. We’re happy about the development and the music scene within Ukraine.
WS: Ahora, nos gustaría hablar de vuestra situación actual como artistas. El año pasado estrenasteis música en Afterlife, Watergate Records, Diynamic, Rukus y Embassy One, y recientemente lanzasteis uno de los mejores temas del 2020 junto a Camelphat. ¿Cómo veis vuestra carrera musical actualmente? ¿Cuáles son vuestros próximos objetivos? ¿Hay algo nuevo que nos podáis contar?
A: Gracias por las bonitas palabras. Nos encantó trabajar con todos ellos y siempre mantendremos una buena amistad. Cada uno de los sellos nos ha ayudado a crecer. De hecho, nos hace sentir muy orgullosos. Siempre buscamos mejorar, siempre hay cosas que puedes hacer mejor, ya sea en el estudio, en la carretera o en el lado privado. Por eso podéis dar por sentado que volveremos aún más fuertes y tenemos más canciones listas para ser pinchadas a todo volumen, cuando podamos. Tenemos muchas ganas de estar de gira otra vez.
WS: Now, we would like you to talk about your situation as artists. Last year you released music in Afterlife, Watergate Records, Diynamic, Rukus, and Embassy One, and you just released one of the best tunes of 2020 with Camelphat. How do you see your musical career right now? What are your next goals? Is there anything new you can tell us about?
A: Thanks for the kind words. We loved to work with all of them and will always keep a close friendship. Each and every label, has helped us to grow. It makes us very proud actually. We are always looking for improvement. There are always things you can do better. Let it be in the studio, on the road, or on a private side. So you can be assured that we will come back even stronger and have some more tunes ready to be played out loud. Once we are able to. We can’t wait to be on the road again.
WS: Sobre ‘For A Feeling’, ¿cómo surgió y cómo fue el proceso de producción? ¿Esperabáis un recibimiento y apoyo tan bueno?
A: CamelPhat son buenos productores y músicos. Lo que primero fue una buena impresión, se convirtió en algo muy especial. Durante el proceso nos hicimos amigos y nos invitaron a su noche en Hï Ibiza. Nos lo pasamos muy bien y tuvimos una mayor conexión con los chicos. Cuando escuchamos la voz de Rhodes, supimos que podíamos crear algo único. Cosa que esperamos haber hecho 🙂 Las primeras reacciones fueron fenomenales. Será especial escuchar ese tema ser pinchado en un gran escenario de algún festival o club.
WS: About ‘For A Feeling’, how did it emerge and how was the production process? Did you expect such a great feedback and support?
A: CamelPhat are great producers and musicians. What was a first good impression, turned into something really special. Throughout the process we got friends and they invited us on their night at Hï Ibiza. We had a great time and got an even better connection with the guys. When we heard the vocals from Rhodes, we knew we could create something unique. Which we hopefully did 🙂 First reactions are phenomenal. It will be special to hear that track being played on a big festival stage or club.
WS: El año pasado vuestro mayor hit fue el remix a ‘Return To Oz’, Cuando lo acabasteis, ¿esperabais que incluso DJs populares como David Guetta lo pincharían? ¿Pensáis que fue un paso adelante en vuestra carrera?
A: Buena pregunta. La respuesta sólo puede ser ‘tal vez’. Y por supuesto nos ayudó a llegar a un público más amplio. Estamos agradecidos a David, pero también a otros grandes artistas que apoyaron el tema. Fue por supuesto un paso hacia adelante y nos ayudó a crecer. Nunca olvidaremos el momento en el que pinchamos el remix en Cercle en lo alto de la Sugarloaf Mountain.
WS: Last year your biggest hit was the ‘Return To Oz’ remix. When you finished it, did you expect that even mainstream DJs like David Guetta would play it? Do you think that it was a step forward in your career?
A: Good question. The answer can only be ‘maybe’. And it definitely helped us to reach a wider audience. We’re thankful to David, but also other massive artists to support the track. It was surely a step forward and helped us grow. We will never forget to moment we played the remix at Cercle atop of Sugarloaf Mountain. That surely was special and helped us promoting the tune.
WS: Viendo vuestros últimos estrenos podemos decir que habéis encontrado un sonido característico. ¿Cómo de difícil es para un artista encontrar un sonido con el que se encuentre realmente cómodo?
A: No va sobre la dificultad. Al principio empezamos haciendo música para nuestras sesiones y es lo que seguimos haciendo ahora. Esta dinámica es nuestra pasión. Así es como encontramos nuestro estilo y nos gusta cómo fluye.
WS: Seeing your latest releases we could say that you have found a unique and characteristic sound. How difficult is it for an artist to find a sound with which he feels truly comfortable?
A: It’s not about the difficulty. In the beginning, we started from making music for our sets and that’s how we continue to do now. It’s our passion to be in this vibe. That’s how we found our style and we like its flow.
WS: Vuestro set en Cercle ha superado las 8.5 millones de visitas en un año. ¿Cómo fue la experiencia? ¿Pensáis que esto os ha dado más visibilidad?
A: Y los números siguen creciendo, lo cual es fenomenal 🙂 Fue una experiencia única en la vida. Algo verdaderamente especial, que nunca antes había ocurrido. Todo fue perfecto, desde el tiempo a la atmósfera, el escenario, la gente, la buena producción, la increíble hospitalidad/organización y el insuperable lugar. Todo perfecto. Siempre estaremos agradecidos a nuestros amigos en Cercle.
WS: Your set in Cercle has reached more than 8.5 million views in one year. How was the experience? Do you think this gave you more visibility?
A: And the numbers are growing which is phenomenal 🙂 It was a once in a lifetime experience. Something truly special, that has never happened before. Everything was perfect from weather, to vibe, the scene, to the crowd, the great production, the amazing hospitality/organization, and the unbeatable venue. All on point. We will be forever grateful to our friends at Cercle.
WS: ¿Cómo os sentisteis cuando Eric Prydz os pidió que pinchaseis en su show especial en Printworks?
A: Un gran honor, por supuesto. Eric es uno de los pioneros y un verdaderamente buen músico. Eric nos ha estado apoyando casi desde el primer día, así que ni lo pensamos dos veces.
WS: How did you feel when Eric Prydz asked you to play at his special Printworks’ show?
A: A big honor obviously. Eric is one of the pioneers and a real great musician. Eric supports us since almost day one. So it was a no brainer.
WS: Con la situación del COVID-19, ¿cómo de productivos os sentís? ¿El confinamiento está afectando a vuestra creatividad? ¿Cómo pensáis que vamos a salir después de esto?
A: Nadie sabe cómo será, solo podemos tener fe. Pensamos que con el tiempo todo volverá a la normalidad, con progresos en la inmunidad y medicina. Es otro reto para el mundo, pero creemos que al final somos lo suficientemente fuertes para superarlo y ganar esta batalla. Hablando sobre nosotros, hemos usado este tiempo para estar en el estudio y con nuestras familias y amigos. Ellos juegan un papel muy importante en cuanto a inspiración. Recemos para que todo esto termine pronto.
WS: With the COVID-19 situation, how productive do you feel? Is this isolation affecting your creativity? What do you think it’s going to come out of all this?
A: No-one knows how it will be, we can only hope. We think with time, everything will get back to normal, with some immunity and medicine progression. It’s one more challenge for the world, but we believe that we are strong enough to go through this and win the challenge in the end. Speaking for us we use the time for the studio, for resting with our family and friends. They play a big role when it comes to inspiration. Let’s just all pray that this is over soon.
