El mítico dúo neerlandés de hardstyle hace un recorrido desde sus inicios hasta hoy con el inminente estreno de su álbum ‘Enter Your Mind’
El hardstyle lleva tiempo fuera del underground, convirtiéndose en una de las corrientes principales a nivel internacional. Y al frente de ella están artistas como D-Block & S-te-Fan. Su histórico legado marca un antes y un después en la escena ya que el dúo fue cofundador del hardstyle tal y como lo conocemos ahora: enérgico, melódico y potente. Ello les ha conducido a elaborar algunas de las canciones más bailadas del subgénero como ‘Sound Of Thunder’, ‘Darkest Hour’ o el anthem de Defqon.1, entre otros. Su consolidado sonido lleva más de una década llegando a cada rincón del planeta y hoy tenemos el enorme placer de conocer a fondo todo ese amplio recorrido musical tratando temas como su alias Ghost Stories, su cuarto disco ‘Enter Your Mind’ o el rumbo de su carrera a partir de 2022.
Wololo Sound: ¡Hola Diederik y Stefan! No os hacéis una idea de lo ilusionados que estamos de tener a uno de los dúos más legendarios del hardstyle como invitados en esta entrevista. Nos gustaría empezar hablando de vuestros inicios. ¿Cuándo y cómo nace la fusión D-Block & S-te-Fan? ¿Por qué os decantasteis por el hard siendo nativos de un país tan rico en música electrónica?
DBSTF: La música hard para nosotros comenzó con los primeros momentos del hard house británico y el hard trance alemán de la mano de Cosmic Gate, Tom Harding, JP y Scot Project. Por supuesto, los holandeses pensaron que no era lo suficientemente “intenso”, así que nació el hardstyle.
Después de eso hubo muchos artistas antes que nosotros como Zany, Prophet, Deepack, Dana y Luna que allanaron el camino, pero echábamos de menos un giro melódico en la música. Cuando empezamos a producir hardstyle añadimos ese elemento, que se convirtió en el sonido principal del hardstyle por aquel entonces. Para nosotros ese fue el momento en el que también supimos que esta era nuestra música, y que lo sería durante muchos años.
Wololo Sound: Hi Diederik and Stefan! You have no idea how excited we are to have one of the most legendary hardstyle duos as our guests for this interview. We’d like to start by talking about your beginnings: when and how did the D-Block & S-te-Fan fusion come about? Why did you choose hardstyle even if you are native of a country so rich in electronic music?
DBSTF: Harddance music for us started in the early beginning with UK hardhouse and German hardtrance by the likes of Cosmic Gate, Tom Harding, JP and Scot Project. Offcourse the dutch thought it wasn’t “heavy” enough so Hardstyle was born haha.
After that there were many artists before us like Zany, Prophet, Deepack, Dana and Luna that paved the way, but we missed a melodic twist to the music. When we started producing hardstyle we added that element, which became the main sound of hardstyle back then. For us that was the moment we also knew that this was our music, for many years to come.
WS: Antes que artistas, suponemos que fuisteis parte del público. Con toda la experiencia que tenéis detrás, ¿qué creéis que ha mejorado y qué ha empeorado en la escena electrónica desde entonces? ¿Se ha perdido la “esencia” o simplemente se está creando una nueva?
DBSTF: Para ser sinceros, nuestro periodo como público/fans es de hace más de 15 años jaja. A veces incluso nos preguntamos cómo es hoy en día para los fans estar en el público y experimentar nuestra música de esa manera. También nos asusta saberlo, porque siendo músico y siendo una mente creativa, no quieres que te influyan demasiado sobre lo que es y no es bueno de tu música. Tener total libertad en el estudio aporta las mejores ideas.
En nuestra opinión, la esencia en particular del hardstyle nunca ha estado más viva. Tenemos muchos grandes y dedicados artistas en la escena que están trabajando duro para mantenerla en pie, aunque no es la escena con más exposición, reconocimiento mundial y los sueldos más altos, creemos que es la mejor escena de la que se puede ser parte. Nuestro público es como ningún otro.
WS: Before being artists, we suppose you were part of the crowd. With all the experience you have behind, what do you think has improved and worsened in the electronic scene since then? Has the “essence” been lost or is a new one just being created?
DBSTF: To be honest, our period as crowd/fans is well over 15 years ago haha. Sometimes we are even wondering how it is like nowadays for fans to be in the crowd and experience our music in that way. It also frightens us to know, because being a musician and being a creative mind, you don’t want to be influenced too much about what is and isn’t good about your music. Having total freedom in the studio brings the best ideas.
The essence of Hardstyle in particular has never been more vibrant in our opinion. We have many great and dedicated artists in the scene that are all working hard to keep it alive, although it is not the scene with the most exposure, worldwide recognition and the highest fees, we believe it is the best scene to be participating in. Our crowd is like no other.
WS: Otro de los puntos fuertes de vuestra carrera es la formación Ghost Stories, junto a Evelyn Bakker. ¿Cómo se inició esta unión y qué aportáis cada uno de vosotros a ella? ¿Tendremos música nueva bajo este alias antes de acabar el año?
DBSTF: Ghost Stories para nosotros es muy especial. En primer lugar, porque estamos trabajando con Evelyn, lo que aporta otro nivel de autenticidad a la actuación. Pero también porque nos estamos reinventando a nosotros mismos haciendo una actuación en vivo como esta. La primera vez que actuamos en Reverze, en Bélgica, volvimos a estar asustados y nerviosos, después de todos estos años sobre el escenario. La importancia de la sinergia en el escenario y fuera de él con los visuales y las luces aporta una nueva dimensión a nuestro show.
Vamos a hacer el cierre de Defqon 2022 con Ghost Stories, ¡así que esperad nueva música para ese momento con toda seguridad!
WS: Another highlight of your career is the formation Ghost Stories, together with Evelyn Bakker. How did this union start and what do each of you bring to it? Will we have new music under this alias before the end of the year?
DBSTF: Ghost Stories for us is so special. Firstly, because we are working together with Evelyn which brings another level of authenticity to the act. But also because we are re-inventing ourselves doing a live act like this. The first one we did at Reverze in Belgium we were actually scared and nervous again, after all these years being on stage. The importance of the synergy on stage, and off stage with the visuals and lights brings a next dimension in our act.
We are doing the closing of Defqon 2022 with Ghost Stories, so expect new music for that moment for sure!
WS: Aunque uno de vuestros principales proyectos sea con una vocalista mujer, todavía falta algo de representación femenina entre los grandes productores de la escena. ¿A qué creéis que se debe esto? ¿Es el hard un estilo “más masculino” que otros de la electrónica? ¿Qué chica o chicas podrían dar el salto a la fama en los próximos años?
DBSTF: Definitivamente no tiene nada que ver con la escena. No sabemos por qué ocurre esto, pero nos alegraríamos de que todo el mundo creara hardstyle y lanzara buena música. Seamos sinceros, hace falta ser un nerd para meterse de lleno en el ordenador y en la teoría del daw y la música para convertirse en productor, y no digamos ya para ser un productor de hard dance, que podría decirse que es aún más difícil de crear. Es todo especulación, pero quizás el interés de las mujeres en su adolescencia es diferente al de los chicos con sus ordenadores.
WS: Although one of your main projects features a female vocalist, there is still a lack of female representation among the big producers in the scene. Why do you think this is? Is hard music a “more masculine” style than other electronic music genres? Which girl or girls could make the breakthrough in the next few years?
DBSTF: It definitely has nothing to do with the scene. We don’t know why it is, but we wouldcheer for everyone creating Hardstyle and release great music! Let’s be honest; It takes a nerd to dive this deep into a computer and a daw/music theory to become a producer, let alone be a hard dance producer which is arguably even harder to create. It’s all speculation, but maybe the interest of woman in their teenage years is different then guys with their computers.
WS: El año está llegando a su fin, y si echamos la vista hacia atrás comprobamos vuestro alucinante nivel de lanzamientos durante el 2021, sobre todo con el inminente estreno de vuestro álbum ‘Enter Your Mind’. ¿Qué supone este release para vosotros? ¿Qué ha sido lo más especial de su creación?
DBSTF: Para nosotros ha sido un infierno, jaja. Decidimos lanzar el álbum de forma diferente a como lo haríamos normalmente. En primer lugar, debido a la pandemia en la que no tuvimos ningún show para promocionar nuestra música, y en segundo lugar porque añadimos el elemento de los vídeos a los lanzamientos con nuestra serie ‘Enter Your Mind’.
Para nosotros era muy importante no defraudar a nuestros fans y dejar de lanzar música. Lo más fácil habría sido esperar con los lanzamientos hasta que pudiéramos volver a los escenarios. Pero queríamos dar a la escena algo que esperar en estos momentos de locura. Así es como se nos ocurrió la idea.
Además, queríamos demostrar que, aunque son tiempos raros, nuestra escena sigue unida. No sólo nuestros fans, sino también los fans de los demás artistas. Por eso añadimos otros artistas al concepto, para mostrar lo unida que está la comunidad y para dar también a la gente que no es específicamente fan nuestro, la oportunidad de ver un episodio con su artista favorito. Eso es lo más especial del álbum.
WS: The year is coming to an end and looking back, you have a mind-blowing level of releases during 2021, especially with the imminent release of your album ‘Enter Your Mind’. What does this release mean to you? What has been the most special thing about its creation?
DBSTF: For us it was a hell of a ride haha. We decided to release the album way different then we normally would. Firstly because of the pandemic where we didn’t have any shows to promote our music, secondly because we added the element of videos to the releases with our series of ‘Enter Your Mind’.
For us it was really important to not let our fans down, and stop releasing. It would have been the easiest way for us to just wait with the releases until we were able to be back on stage again. But we wanted to give the scene something to look forward to in these crazy times. Thats how we came up with the idea.
Besides that we wanted to show that although its a weird time, our scene is still united as one. Not just our fans, but also the fans of the other artists. Thats why we added other artists to the concept. To show how close the community is, and to also give people who are not specifically a fan of us, also the opportunity to see an episode with their favorite artist. That is the most special about the album.
WS: En esta producción os habéis mantenido fieles a la escena hard, a pesar de que otros veteranos de la industria estén apostando por tonos más mainstream. ¿Qué pensáis que aporta o quita este factor a la comunidad? ¿Pretendéis seguir siendo leales al hardstyle a medio y largo plazo u os gustaría experimentar con otros estilos?
DBSTF: Ya hemos pasado por eso. ¿Sabes cuál es la lección que consideramos más importante de hacer música como DBSTF? Esta escena es increíble tal y como es. Puede crecer, sería positivo crecer. Pero no metiendo a gente que sea un fraude. Claro que podemos crear canciones más comerciales si queremos, y quizá llegar a un público aún mayor, pero más grande no siempre es mejor. Míralo como una relación: sólo puedes mantener una relación si puedes ser tú mismo, y el otro te quiere por lo que eres.
Así que eso es lo que hacemos, intentamos mantenernos lo más cerca posible a nosotros mismos, con el sonido que tanto nos gusta. Si a la gente le gusta, se une a la comunidad. Si no, hay muchos más artistas por explorar.
WS: In this production you have remained loyal to hard, even though other industry veterans are moving towards more mainstream tones. What do you think this factor adds or detracts from the community? Do you intend to remain only in hardstyle in the medium to long term or would you like to experiment with other styles?
DBSTF: Been there, done that. You know what we find the most important lesson from doing DBSTF music? This scene is amazing as it is, it can grow, it would be healthy to grow. But not by bringing people in on false notice. Sure we can create more commercial songs if we would like, and maybe reach an even bigger audience, but bigger is not always better. See it as a relationship: you can only maintain a relationship if you can be yourself, and the other loves you for who you are.
So that’s what we do, we try to be as close to ourselves as possible, with the sound we love so much. If people love it, join the community. If not, many more artists to explore.
WS: A los ocho nuevos tracks del disco le acompañan ocho remixes de un selecto elenco de artistas como Sefa, Wildstylez o Phuture Noize. ¿En qué os basasteis para elegir a los protagonistas de las remezclas? ¿Cuáles os han sorprendido más?
DBSTF: Como sólo podíamos pedírselo a ocho, no utilizamos artistas de los que ya teníamos un remix, y además los artistas debían ser de habla neerlandesa. Apreciamos mucho que tantos artistas estuvieran dispuestos a trabajar con nuestro concepto. Esto demuestra una vez más lo buena que es la comunidad.
El remix de JDX de ‘Ghost Stories’ es probablemente el que más nos ha sorprendido, ya que es un viaje musical. Es como escuchar un tema de James Bond. La producción es una locura, pero para ser justos estamos muy emocionados con todas las remezclas ¡Nadie nos decepcionó!
WS: The eight new tracks on the album are accompanied by eight remixes from a select group of artists such as Sefa, Wildstylez or Phuture Noize. What did you base your choice of the remix-makers on? Which ones surprised you the most?
DBSTF: Because we could only ask 8 we did not use artists who we already had a remix from, and also the artists needed to be dutch speaking. We really appreciate that so many artists were willing to work along with our concept. It shows once again how cool the community is.
The JDX remix of ‘Ghost Stories’ probably suprised us the most, as it is just a musical journey. Like listening to a James Bond theme song haha. Insane production, but to be fair we are really excited about all the remixes. No one dissapointed!
WS: Con tantas canciones bajo vuestra marca, ponemos la mano en el fuego de que no serán pocas las que alcanzarán buenas posiciones en el Top 100 de Q-Dance. ¿Cuáles apostáis que llegarán más alto y por qué?
DBSTF: Es muy difícil de decir jajaja. Hemos publicado 18 canciones en 2021. Con una lista de las 100 mejores canciones como esta, quizá sea mejor tener solo 1 o 2 canciones en las que centrarse. Todos tus fans elegirán estas canciones y así es más fácil alcanzar una posición más alta en el ranking. Nos sentimos muy honrados cuando tenemos canciones que llegan a esta lista, porque es una lista legítima, a diferencia de otras. Algunas de las canciones que publicamos en el álbum tienen mensajes muy potentes, por ejemplo ‘Fearless’ o ‘Gates of Paradise’. Pero otras destrozarán las pistas de baile cuando podamos volver a los escenarios. Quizá deberíamos pedir a los votantes que voten por la canción que da título al disco, ‘Enter Your Mind’, si les ha gustado lo que hemos hecho en 2021, ¡jajaja!
WS: With so many songs under your name, we are sure that more than a few of them will reach good positions in the Q-Dance Top 100. Which ones do you bet will reach the highest positions and why?
DBSTF: It is so hard to say haha. We have released 18 songs in 2021. With a top 100 list like this one, it maybe better to have only 1 or 2 songs to focus on. All your fans will pick these songs and it is easier to reach a higher ranking. We do really feel honored when we have songs reach this list, because it is a legit list, unlike some others. Some of the songs we released on the album have some really powerful messages, for example ‘Fearless‘ or ‘Gates of Paradise‘. But others are about to destroy dance floors when we are able to be on stage again.. haha. Maybe we should just ask the voters to vote for the title track ‘Enter Your Mind‘ if they enjoyed what we have been doing in 2021 haha!
WS: Por último, nos gustaría que os mojaseis y nos contéis qué planes o proyectos tenéis para el 2022. ¿Colaboraciones inesperadas? ¿Os aventuraréis a crear un sello propio tras tantos años de recorrido?
DBSTF: No tenemos planes de crear nuestro propio sello, seguimos estando contentos con nuestra música saliendo en Scantraxx. Respecto a nueva música, tenemos mucho en la recámara. Acabamos de hacer algunas colaboraciones de locos con DJ Isaac, Sefa y Frontliner, y en 2022, si todo se abre, finalmente revelaremos y lanzaremos la colaboración más esperada de la historia del hardstyle… 🙂
Además de eso, vamos a trabajar mucho en nuevas canciones de Ghost Stories para nuestro set de Defqon, ¡así que también nos esperan muchas cosas para 2022!
WS: Finally, we would like you to tell us about your plans or projects for 2022. Unexpected collabs? Will you venture to create your own label after so many years on the road?
DBSTF: We have no plans to come with our own label, we are still happy with our music being released on Scantraxx. In terms of new music, we have a lot in store. We just made some crazy collabs with DJ Isaac, Sefa and Frontliner, and in 2022, if everything opens up, we will finally reveal and release the most awaited collab in Hardstyle history… 🙂
Besides that we are gonna work a lot on new Ghost Stories songs for our Defqon set, so a lot is in store for 2022 as well!
