Wololo Sound – ¡Hola Tino! Encantado de saludarte. Lo primero, muchísimas gracias por atender a Wololo Sound en esta entrevista exclusiva. Tu carrera como artista ha evolucionado enormemente en los últimos años. Bajo mi punto de vista, este éxito se asienta bajo un sonido musical que has conseguido que sea característico. ¿Consideras que has creado un movimiento, o que has dado vida a un estilo que no estaba para nada en movimiento?
PDM: El disco es un género básicamente positivo, optimista y divertido: incluye canciones y grooves con los que todo el mundo se puede sentir identificado. Por eso encaja en muchos momentos de la vida de la gente – escuchándolo en casa, haciendo ejercicio y, por supuesto, bailando en clubes y festivales. De alguna forma, es música de baile melódicia definitiva. Pienso que siempre hay espacio para eso.
Solo trato de hacer música para el presente y el futuro inspirada en los sonidos clásicos que me influyeron pero con un toque moderno. En mis producciones más recientes, tomé la decisión de alejarme del sonido disco clásico de la década de 1970 y los sonidos boogie de la década de 1980 y exploré el legado de Italo Disco/hi-NRG, que también era una parte muy importante de la música disco. Siento que este fue un paso importante ya que este sonido era menos popular en la comunidad disco, provenía más de Europa que de los EEUU (aunque por supuesto hay figuras clave como Patrick Cowley o Bobby O, que eran americanos) y puede que esa haya sido la razón por la que mi música haya conectado tan bien en Europa.
En el futuro, también estoy buscando influencias sónicas más allá del sonido italo, aunque no lo abandonaré. Como en mi nuevo sencillo ‘Wake Up!‘.
WS: Your career as an artist has evolved quite a lot over the last few years. From my point of view, this success is cemented under a sound that you made unique. Do you consider you created a movement or that you turned back to life a style that was not that active at all?
PDM: Disco is a genre that is mostly positive, uplifting and fun: it incorporates songs as well as grooves and everyone can relate to it. Therefore it is relevant in many parts of people’s lives – listening at home, exercising and, of course, dancing at clubs and festivals. In a way, it is the ultimate melodic dance music. There is always a place for that I think.
I just try to make music for now and the future that is inspired by the classic sounds that influenced me but with a modern twist. In my more recent productions I made a decision to move away from the 1970s classic disco sound and the 1980’s boogie sounds and explored the Italo Disco/ hi-NRG legacy which was also such an important part of disco. I feel this was an important step as this sound was less popular in the disco community, came more from Europe than the US (although of course key figures like Patrick Cowley and Bobby O were American) and perhaps was a reason my music has connected so well in Europe.
Going forward I’m also looking at sonic influences beyond the italo sound , though I won’t abandon it. Like on my new single ‘Wake Up!’
WS: Estamos viviendo una nueva juventud de la música house/disco, como previamente hubo otros géneros que resucitaron de repente. ¿Crees que la música un ciclo? Que hoy triunfa un estilo, mañana otro, y que al final todo es una rueda?
PDM: La música disco ha existido durante quizás 45 años, por lo que es un género realmente asentado. Los gustos musicales de las personas cambian con el tiempo y muy a menudo, dentro de la música de baile, reaparecen sonidos del pasado. En este momento, la música disco definitivamente está de vuelta y estoy muy feliz de ser parte de ella. De hecho, creo que he ayudado con este regreso… Pero, por supuesto, es probable que la tendencia pase a otra cosa, pero como dije antes, la música disco es un estilo tan clásico de música de baile melódica que confío en que siempre habrá un lugar para él.
WS: We are living a new youth of house and disco music, the same as other genres already came back suddenly. Do you think music is a cycle? That a style is successful today, a different one will be tomorrow and everything is just a wheel?
PDM: Disco has been around for maybe 45 years, so it is a really established genre. People’s musical tastes change over time and very often within dance music sounds from the past reappear. Right now disco is definitely back and I’m very happy to be part of it. In fact, I think I might have helped with this return… But of course, it is likely that the trend will move on to something else, but as I said above disco is such a classic style of melodic dance music I’m trusting that there will always be a place for it
WS: En unos días podremos escuchar un nuevo super hit por tu parte titulado ‘Wake Up’. ¿Qué esperas, y qué podemos esperar de este single?
PDM: Es un poco diferente de los lanzamientos anteriores de Purple Disco Machine ya que el estilo musical está influenciado por la música africana y latinoamericana en lugar de la disco estadounidense o la disco italo. Mis colaboradores son de Colombia y Benin… Pero sigue siendo el sonido PDM y espero que traiga momentos de euforia en fiestas y festivales este año.
WS: In a few days we will be able to listen to your new super hit called ‘Wake Up’. What do you expect and what can we expect from this single?
PDM: It’s a bit different from previous Purple Disco Machine releases in that the musical style is influenced by African & Latin American music rather than US disco or Italo disco. My collaborators are from Colombia and Benin… but it is still the PDM sound and hopefully will provide a good uplifting moment at parties and festivals this year.
WS: Al igual que ‘In The Dark’, este track sale a la venta en Sony Music. ¿Cuáles son las principales ventajas de trabajar con una ‘major’ como Sony?
PDM: Tengo un equipo increíble trabajando en Purple Disco Machine en Sony Music. Honestamente, puedo decir que sin ellos no hubiera tenido el increíble éxito en la radio o el streaming que he tenido en los últimos 3 años. Entonces, para mí, la verdadera ventaja son las personas excelentes que trabajan muy duro y hacen todo lo posible para comprender lo que estoy tratando de hacer. Estoy seguro de que ayuda que tengan mucho poder y recursos en comparación con otros sellos, pero eso no sería ninguna garantía a menos que fueran grandes personas, etc. En mi opinión.
WS: As well as ‘In The Dark’, this track is going to be released on Sony Music. What are the main advantages of working with a ‘major’ such as Sony?
PDM: I have an amazing team working on Purple Disco Machine at Sony Music. I can honestly say without them I would not have had the incredible success at radio or streaming I’ve had in the past 3 years. So for me, the real advantage is great people who work really hard and make every effort to understand what I’m trying to do. I’m sure it helps that they have a lot of power and resource compared to other labels, but that wouldn’t be any guarantee unless they were great people, etc. In my opinion anyway.
WS: A parte de ser un gran productor, eres probablemente uno de los ‘remixers’ más solicitados de la actualidad. Desde éxitos internacionales de Dua Lipa o Lady Gaga a clásicos de los 70s y 80s, tienes un don para darle tu forma a cualquier tema. ¿Cómo es tu proceso para crear una remezcla? Cómo te sientes más cómodo: ¿produciendo música original o remezclando canciones de otros?
PDM: Gracias. Siempre es un privilegio y un honor remezclar grandes discos y tengo la suerte de hacerlo con muchos artistas icónicos. Creo que, por alguna razón, estoy conectado a mantener intacta la canción original mientras agrego ese sabor de pista de baile, ¡por eso estas leyendas me siguen preguntando!
Me gusta hacer ambas cosas: originales y remixes. Por supuesto, presentan diferentes desafíos y recompensas. Mientras pueda conseguir lo que estoy produciendo o remezclando, ¡estoy feliz de hacerlo!
WS: Apart from being a great producer, you are probably one of the most demanded “remixers” nowadays. From international success with the likes of Dua Lipa or Lady Gaga to classics from the 70s and 80s, you have a gift to shape any kind of track. How is your process of creating a remix? How do you feel more comfortable: producing original music or remixing other people’s tracks?
PDM: Thank you. It is always a privilege and an honor to remix great records and I’m fortunate to do so with so many iconic artists. I think that for some reason I’m connected to keeping the original song intact while adding that dancefloor flavor which is why I keep getting asked by these legends!
I like to do both – originals and remixes. They present different challenges and rewards of course. As long as I can get with what I’m producing or remixing, then I’m happy to do it!
WS: ¿Qué podemos esperar de tu discografía en lo que resta de año?
PDM: Con ‘Wake Up!‘ hemos regresado deliberadamente a la pista de baile, ya que se prevé que este año sea un fuerte regreso a la fiesta en todos los sentidos. Así que para este año, más de este estilo más club, y luego ya veremos.
WS: What can we expect from your label for the remainder of the year?
PDM: With ‘Wake Up!’ we’ve deliberately returned to the dancefloor as this year is predicted to be a strong return to the party by all accounts. So for this year more in this club style and then we will see.
WS: Otro punto difícil en tu carrera ha debido ser convencer a promotores y festivales que tu música y tu estilo también tiene cabida en un gran festival. ¿Cómo adaptas tus sesiones dependiendo del stage donde actúes?
PDM: Tengo mucha suerte de no tener que hacerlo. Siento cada vez más que la gente viene a ver Purple Disco Machine y que tengo que cumplir con eso. Para ser honesto, incluso mientras comenzaba, me mantuve fiel a mi sonido y estilo.
WS: Another difficult point of your career must have been persuading promoters and festivals into thinking that your music and your style have a spot in a big festival. How do you adapt your sets depending on the stage you are playing?
PDM: I’m very lucky that I don’t have to. I feel more and more that people come to see Purple Disco Machine and that I have to deliver on that. To be honest even as I was coming up I stayed true to my sound and style.
WS: ¿Te has planteado alguna vez tocar géneros más “contundentes” en directo, pese a dejar de lado temas propios, para poder abarcar un mayor número de registros?
PDM: No. Eso no tiene ningún sentido para mí. Creo que mis “registros” son bastante saludables sin cambiar de estilo. De hecho, no entiendo a esos productores que no quieren tocar la música que hicieron en sus sesiones de DJ.
WS: Have you ever thought about trying “harder” genres live, despite leaving some of your tracks behind, to be able to gather a larger amount of registers?
PDM: No. That doesn’t make any sense to me. I think my “registers” are pretty healthy without changing styles I actually don’t understand those producers who don’t want to play the music they made in their DJ sets.
WS: Te hemos visto varias veces en España, por ejemplo en Ibiza estarás en numerosas ocasiones este verano. ¿Qué opinas de la escena ibicenca y sus clubes?
PDM: Es genial y me siento honrado de ser residente en Hi Ibiza con Glitterbox durante unos 5 años ya. También tocaré en Pacha y Ushuaia este año. Pero la escena española no es solo Ibiza para mí ahora. Mis temas como ‘Hypnotized‘, ‘Dopamine‘ e ‘In The Dark‘ han sonado mucho en la radio española, así que cuando toqué en Barcelona recientemente, por ejemplo, fue maravilloso ver que la gente venía a verme tocar y escuchar mi música.
WS: We have seen you in Spain a couple times, for example, you will be in Ibiza on numerous occasions this summer. What do you think of the Ibiza scene and its clubs?
PDM: It’s great and I’m honored to be a resident at Hi Ibiza with Glitterbox for some 5 years by now. I also will play at Pacha and Ushuaia this year. But the Spanish scene is not just Ibiza for me now. My records like ‘Hypnotized’, ‘Dopamine’ and ‘In The Dark’ have been played a lot on Spanish radio and so when I played Barcelona recently for example it was wonderful to see that the people came to see me play and hear my music.
WS: Sin embargo nos está costando mucho verte por ejemplo en Madrid. ¿Tienes ganas de conocer la capital y actuar aquí?
PDM: Sí, por supuesto. Espero pinchar más por aquí. Como dije antes, ahora la escena española ya no es solo Ibiza para mí.
WS: However, it is being hard to see you in Madrid, for example. Are you looking forward to meeting the capital and playing here?
PDM: Yes of course. I hope to play here more. As I say above the Spanish scene is not just Ibiza for me nowadays.
WS: Generalmente los jóvenes productores arrancan sus carreras ligados al sonido que está de moda en ese momento. ¿Qué podrías decirles sobre la música disco house o qué consejos creativos les darías en estos inicios?
PDM: No le voy a hablar a ningún productor joven sobre el disco house, ya que deben tomar sus propias decisiones sobre el género. Pero lo que puedo decir es que deben encontrar un sonido que les encante, producir y pinchar en sesiones y luego tratar de convertirse en el mejor haciendo en eso.
WS: Generally, young producers start off their careers linked to the trendy sound at that time. What would you tell them about disco house or what creative tips for you give for these beginnings?
PDM: I’m not going to tell any young producer about disco house as they must make their own choices of the genre. But what I can say is find a sound you love to produce and play in DJ sets and then try to become the best person at it.
