Wololo Sound: Hello Tobias and Jakob and thank you for giving us some of your time for this interview. First of all, we want to talk a little bit about this moment of your career, which revolves around the release of ‘Vanity Fair’, your second album. How would you say Neonlight is doing right now?

Neonlight: Happy, exhausted and curious what the near future holds for us! It has been a long run in the end. All these little things that had to be done – apart from music. We invested a lot of time an energy in the whole project. It is not only a bunch of tracks! It is a piece of art for us, and pretty personal as well! We hope that at least a tiny little bit of our concept ideas swapped over to the listeners.

Wololo Sound: Your first album, ‘My Galactic Tale’ (2016), was a huge milestone in your career and made you way more popular within the drum and bass scene due to its quality and innovation. What would the difference be between this first album and ‘Vanity Fair’, your latest one?

Neonlight: ‘My Galactic Tale’ is very story driven. A science fiction tale, where we are just a side note. ‘Vanity Fair’ places us into the center. It reflects our experience with society over the last few years. And of course, our song writing and production skills have evolved again. We wanted to make more “music” than just “sound”. That most of tracks turned out to be pretty perfect for the dance floor is a nice side effect.

Wololo Sound: You have released this album on Blackout, a label that you have been a part of for years. How important has the label been not only for this release but also throughout your career?

Neonlight: Working with Blackout is always a pleasure! We became good friends over the years. They always gave us room for our ideas, trusted in our skills and criticized in the right moment too. And all three boys from Black Sun Empire are soooo kind – there are always good vibes when meeting them on the road!

Wololo Sound: Apart from Blackout, you created your own label Diascope back in 2019. How has the project been doing so far and what was your goal at the time of creating it?

Neonlight:
Diascope is sort of a playground for us. First, we wanted to re-release old but gold tunes from Neonlight back catalouge. Then we started releasing music from other artists as well, because we liked their tunes. It was never intended to be a concurrency for Blackout or similar labels we have been working together in the past. We wanted to support at least the more musical side of neurofunk and be a platform for up and coming artists.

Wololo Sound: Are you thinking about taking a few months of rest after the release of the album or are you working on some new projects already?

Neonlight: Haha! No time to rest, to be honest. We want to keep the level high and use the momentum of the album release. There is more cool stuff in the pipe for the next months! But we do not want to reveal too much for the moment.

Neonlight: Esta pregunta nunca envejece.

Wololo Sound: How do you see the drum and bass scene nowadays in terms of genres, innovation and creativity?

Neonlight: This question never gets old. (smile) It is crazy, how much good drum and bass is out there! Even if we have our taste, the quality and innovation is respectable. People like Buunshin, The Caracal Project, Gyrofield as well as Noisia’s last album show the development in sound design, songwriting and switching sub genres of electronic music. After that long break of parties and festivals, it is good to see people coming back! And there are always new and young DnB heads, whatever place we re-visited over the past years.

Wololo Sound: You have been to our country, specifically Andalusia (Southern Spain), a few times for gigs such as Dreambeach or Dub Elements & Friends. How do you see the scene here and what is the best experience you remember in our country?

Neonlight: Playing at Deambeach was one of the most powerful moments! The funny thing behind this is the management switched the play time of Spor and Neonlight just one or two hours before! So over 8k people where quite surprised (I think positively, haha!) about the different set. And basically, the crowd is always on fire – and keeps it! Like on a long barbecue.

Wololo Sound: ¿Qué artistas habéis descubierto recientemente y os gustaría recomendar? Drum and bass y también no-drum and bass.

En el drum and bass siempre prestamos atención a Myselor, The Caracal Project y Moon Addict.

Wololo Sound: What artists have you discovered recently and would like to recommend? Drum and bass and also non-drum and bass.

Neonlight: Micronaut from Germany writes really cool music. We know him for many years now because he used to be a DnB DJ. I (Jay) am a big fan of Trifonic and Mad Zach presently. In DnB we keep an eye on Myselor, The Caracal Project and Moon Addict.

As mentioned above – Buunshin is one of the most impressive new names to the Drum & Bass scene to me (Tobi) since Mefjus hit the scene with his first album “Emulation” in 2014. But there are so many more artists to discover nearly every month. I really enjoy the music of Tinlicker. They are totally no newcomers but they do just great music.
