Wololo Sound: Hola chicos.

Wololo Sound: Hi guys! First of all, thank you for answering our questions in this exclusive interview with Wololo Sound. You are part of the new generation of House/Tech House artists from the UK, one of the countries with the best scene around these genres. How much has belonging to this country helped you? How was the beginning and what artists did you look up to?

Illyus & Barrientos: Our taste is very varied, and we’re just lucky enough to come from the UK but more specifically Glasgow. We should mention we come from an incredible city filled with musical history, especially in dance music. Guys like Slam and Optimo paved the way and opened doors for the likes of us, Denis Sulta, Jasper James and so on. In the beginning, getting anywhere was always tough because a lot of rejection comes with the territory but we love what we do so there is no such thing as giving up. Our taste has always helped us be creative. Guys like Erol Alkan and Detroit Swindle are names we used to follow, but there is also the hip hop generation of DJ Premier and J. Dilla that just created amazing beauty in a totally different style.

¡o house tech!

WS: We do not know if musically speaking you would define yourselves as “Tech House” artists. Nowadays this genre is in great shape in terms of popularity, but it is also being heavily criticized for turning into something too generic. What’s your opinion about that?

I&B: We see ourselves as House… or house tech! Music with a soul but made for clubs. Our opinion is always the same when it comes to these sorts of debates. Good music is good music! Everyone do their own thing and hopefully, it makes you and the people around you happy.

I&B: Sinceramente, ¡no lo sabemos!

WS: What does a Tech House hit need to have in order to stand out and reach a high position in the charts?

I&B: To be honest we don’t know! We just make what feels good to us. Maybe that’s the secret?! If you’re new to all this, just make sure you make music you love and would play out yourself. Otherwise, what are you doing it for?

WS: Some “mainstream” artists such as David Guetta or Calvin Harris are making their own paths towards more underground sounds. What do you think about this? Does the fact of stars like them sharing stages and charts with artists of the genre is, in some way, taking away part of the spotlight from you?

I&B: We have never really looked at this that way until you asked the question. It goes back to our earlier answer: good music is good music, so there’s not much point in denying the world of it. To us music is all about inclusivity, was that not what it all was built on? So the more people that come together and enjoy this, the better.

WS: If we think about Illyus & Barrientos we immediately relate it to Toolroom Records. How have Mark Knight and Toolroom helped in your career? What is the “Toolroom family” like?

I&B: It’s all in the name ‘family’. These guys are amazing all the time. People like Matt, Vicky, George, Mikey,… Literally too many to mention. But the people in the background are the heart and soul of Toolroom Records, and we’re sure Mark would say the exact same.

WS: How is the COVID-19 crisis affecting you professionally? When do you think that everything will get back to normal?

I&B: To be honest we have no idea when it will go back to normal. We’re just guys that make and play music, so even thinking about how it affects us isn’t a concern for now as there are so many people struggling. We just really hope everyone stays safe in these testing times.

WS: What musical projects do you have for this 2020? Any exclusive that you’d like to share with us?

I&B: We never stop working, so there is plenty in the pipeline but we can’t reveal anything other that there’s a new Ultra record coming out as well as a brand new banger on Toolroom!
