Hoy tenemos el placer de hablar con uno de los dúos más destacados de la escena techno actual. Con muy pocos años de carrera, su show es de los más valorados actualmente, lo que les ha hecho llevar su característico sonido acid alrededor de todo el mundo.
WS: Hablemos de vuestros orígenes, empezasteis muy recientemente, hace cerca de 4 años. ¿Cómo fueron vuestros primeros días, cómo os conocisteis? ¿Por qué elegisteis ese nombre?
99: Somos de la misma ciudad, Venecia. Ambos éramos DJs y productores en nuestra ciudad natal, tenemos gustos similares en la música y un día decidimos grabar algo juntos: aunque no tenemos la misma edad, congeniamos gracias a la motivación y los objetivos que tenemos en común.
“999999999” surge de la necesidad de no definir nuestro proyecto como algo claro y limitado. Sólo queremos que las personas se centren en nuestra música, no en quiénes somos detrás del proyecto.
WS: Let’s talk about your origins, you started very recently, almost 4 years ago. How were your beginnings, how did you meet? Why did you choose that name?
99: We are from the same city, Venice. We were both djs and producers in our hometown, we have similar tastes in music and one day we decided to record something together: even though we aren’t the same age, we matched thanks to the motivation and the goals we have in common.
“999999999” comes from the need to not define our project as something clear and “bounded”. We just want the people to be focused on our music, not on who we are behind the project.
WS: Después de esos casi cuatro años, sois actualmente una de las piezas más populares de la nueva oleada techno que está presente en la escena actual. ¿Cuál crees que ha sido el punto de inflexión de vuestra carrera? ¿Cómo os sentís en este momento? ¿Cómo veis vuestro futuro?
99: Lanzamos ‘000000002’, nuestro primer EP, y en menos de una semana se agotó. La respuesta de la gente ha sido inesperada, una gran respuesta: así que seguimos trabajando en nuestras cosas durante más de un año, creyendo en nuestro proyecto, y luego lanzamos más música. Comenzamos a ser solicitados por varios clubes y luego desde 2017 hemos estado viajando por todo el mundo haciendo nuestras sesiones en live. Ahora, por supuesto, no sentimos que hemos terminado, y también tenemos que trabajar duro para nuestro futuro.
WS: After those near 4 years, you are currently one of the most popular pieces of the new techno wave that is present in the current scene. What do you think that has been the turning point of your career? How are you feeling at this point? How do you see your future?
99: We released ‘000000002’, our first EP, and just in less than one week it went sold out. The feedback from people has been unexpected, such a great unexpected feedback: so we just kept up working on our stuff for over one year, believing on our project, and then we released more music. We started being requested from several clubs and then since 2017 we have been traveling around the world performing our live sets. Now, for sure, we don’t feel like we are done, and we need to work hard for our future as well.
WS: Ser una de las piezas populares de la escena actual hace que vuestra actuación en formato live sea una de las más alabadas actualmente. ¿Cómo tenéis todo preparado? ¿Qué no puede faltar en vuestros sets?
99: Realizamos tanto sets en live como DJs sets. Son completamente diferentes y ciertamente requieren diferentes tipos de esfuerzo. Durante la semana trabajamos en nuestra actuación en vivo y luego, mientras actuamos, cambiamos la música de vez en cuando dependiendo de cómo esté el público. La parte más importante de nuestros sets en vivo es la improvisación, de hecho, interactuamos con nuestras máquinas y hace que sea mucho más interesante que simplemente pinchar la música de otra persona. Por supuesto, lo que no puede faltar en nuestros sets en vivo son nuestro equipamiento analógico de acid.
WS: Being one of the popular pieces of the current scene means that your live performance is one of the most praised today. How do you have everything prepared? What can not be missing in your sets?
99: We perform both on live sets and djs sets. They are completely different and certainly it requires different kinds of effort. During the week we work on our live performance and then, while performing, we change the music time to time depending on how’s the audience as well. The most important part of our live sets is improvisation, indeed. We interact with our machines and it makes it way more interesting than just playing someone else’s music. For sure, what cannot be missing in our live sets, are our acid machines.

WS: ¿Por qué decidisteis hacer acid y no otro estilo? ¿Cuáles son vuestras influencias?
99: Nos enamoramos de la música electrónica porque antes de pinchar también éramos clubbers y estábamos fascinados con este mundo, nos hemos inspirado en los viejos discos de acid techno de los 90 y en la música techno de la vieja escuela en general.
WS: Why did you decide to make acid and not another style? What are your influences?
99: We fell in love with electronic music because before playing we were also clubbers and we were fascinated by this world, we have been inspired by the old 90’s acid techno records and by the old school techno music in general.
WS: Hace varios meses desde vuestro último estreno, ¿habrá nueva música próximamente? ¿También veremos nuevos lanzamientos en vuestro NineTimesNine? ¿Acogeréis a otros artistas?
99: Estamos listos para lanzar un álbum el próximo año. Debido a que toma algún tiempo distribuir los vinilos, saldrá en dos o tres meses. Tenemos listos dos tracks con Parallax, y lo podréis disfrutar desde finales de febrero.
WS: Several months ago since your last premiere, will there be new music coming soon? Will we also see new releases on your NineTimesNine label? Will you accommodate other artists?
99: We are ready to release an album in the next year, because it takes some time to distribute vinyls, it will be out in 2-3 months. We have ready two tracks with Parallax, and you can enjoy it from the end of February.
WS: Habéis visitado España varias veces en el último año: Fabrik, HEX, Trax Club, Mondo Club, Crow, recientemente habéis actuado en Indoor Gijón y ya estáis confirmados para Aquasella, A Summer Story y Dreambeach. ¿Qué opinais de nuestro país y nuestro público?
99: Estamos muy emocionados y entusiasmados por nuestras próximas fechas en vuestro bonito país. Nos hemos divertido mucho en todas nuestras noches en España viendo como la gente muestra su amor por el techno.
WS: You have visited Spain several times in the last year: Fabrik, HEX, Trax Club, Mondo Club, Crow, recently you played in Indoor Gijon and you are already confirmed for Aquasella, A Summer Story and Dreambeach. What do you think of our country and our audience?
99: We’re thrilled and so excited for our next gigs in your beautiful country. We have had a lot of fun in all our nights in Spain seeing how people show their love for techno!
WS: Además, recientemente habéis pinchado en diferentes países como Italia, Polonia, Francia, Países Bajos, Alemania, Bélgica o Bulgaria. ¿Cómo fue la experiencia?
99: Hemos estado pinchando en casi todo el mundo: cada público es diferente pero siempre nos llevamos algo emocionalmente diferente de la gente que viene solo para vernos. Lo que más apreciamos es ver y hablar con gente que nos siguen en toda Europa, porque aman nuestra música y lo que hacemos.
WS: Also, recently you have played in different countries such as Italy, Poland, France, Netherlands, Germany, Belgium or Bulgaria. How was the experience?
99: We have been playing in almost all the world: audiences are different but we always get emotionally something different from people who came just for us. The thing we appreciate most is to see and talk with people that actually follow us all over Europe, because they love our music and what we do.

¿Club favorito?: Nos encanta la mayoría de los clubs en los que pinchamos pero sin duda Khidi Club, en Tbilisi, fue una de las noches más inolvidables de nuestras vidas. Pinchamos toda la noche, 12 horas sin pausa.

¿Si no fuerais DJs, que seríais?: Seguro que también habríamos estado trabajando con algo relacionado con la música. Antes de ser DJs, siempre nos había interesado este mundo: por ejemplo, uno de nosotros, Carlo, solía escribir artículos para soundwall.it durante mucho tiempo, y ciertamente eso nos ayudó a entender cómo funciona el mundo de la música.

Club or festival?: We love almost all the clubs where we play but with no doubts Khidi club, in Tbilisi, was one of the most unforgettable nights in our lives. We played all night long, 12 hours no stop.

If you were not DJs, what would you be?: For sure we would have been working with something concerning music as well. Before being djs we have been always interested in this world: for example one of us, Carlo, used to write article for soundwall.it for a very long time, and it helped us certainly to get how music world works.
