La séptima temporada de Wololo Sound ya está en marcha y eso es sinónimo del regreso de las entrevistas semanales, cada lunes a las 22:00. Para dar el pistoletazo de salida hemos tenido el placer de contar con uno de los dúos de moda dentro de la vertiente más mainstream de la música electrónica. La unión entre David Guetta y MORTEN despegó hace un año escaso y su sonido, autodenominado como Future Rave, ya es reconocido por todo el planeta. Sin más dilación os dejamos con la charla que pudimos tener con ellos.
Entrevista a David Guetta & MORTEN / Interview with David Guetta & MORTEN:
Wololo Sound: ¡Hola, David y Morten! Lo primero de todo, esperamos que ambos estéis bien en estos tiempos tan extraños. Es un placer para nosotros poder entrevistaros con motivo de vuestro nuevo EP, titulado ‘New Rave’, en el que presentáis cuatro producciones inéditas con el sonido que habéis popularizado en los últimos 12 meses. ¿Podéis hablarnos sobre cómo surgió este cambio de sonido en vuestras carreras?
David Guetta: ¡Gracias por recibirnos! MORTEN y yo trabajamos en el estudio juntos hace un año y sentimos que debíamos elegir entre el techno que molase o el EDM. A mucha gente le gusta el techno, pero siento que cuando se pincha en el escenario principal de un festival no rompe la pista de baile como lo hacen las canciones de EDM. En mi opinión, los temas EDM han estado sonando igual durante los últimos cinco años, por eso queríamos unir los sonidos del mainstage y del underground de forma que mantuvieran la energía EDM. También es la primera vez que saco un EP, lo que verdaderamente me recuerda a cuando empecé, porque en aquel entonces no intentaba hacer grandes éxitos de EDM que atrajeran al público comercial, sólo quería producir la música que me gustaba y que me divirtiera tocando en directo.
Morten Breum: Sí, estábamos un poco atascados a la hora de hacer algo y una vez que nos metimos en este ritmo y empezamos a desarrollar el sonido ha sido extremadamente inspirador. Sólo queríamos hacer música que nos gustara de verdad, no por dinero ni nada de eso, y no podría estar más contento con cómo suena.
Wololo Sound: Hi, David and Morten! First of all, I hope you’re both well in these strange times. It’s a pleasure for us to be able to interview you for the occasion of your new EP, entitled ‘New Rave’, in which you present four unreleased productions with the sound you have popularized in the last year. Can you tell us about how this evolution of your sound came up in your careers?
David Guetta: Thanks for having us! MORTEN and I got into the studio together a year ago, and we felt like we needed to make a choice between techno which is ‘cool’ or EDM. A lot of people like techno but I found when it’s played on a mainstage at a festival it doesn’t kill the dancefloor the same way EDM tracks do. In my opinion, EDM tracks have been sounding the same for the last five years so that’s why we wanted to unite the sounds of the mainstage and underground in a form that maintains the energy EDM. It’s also the first time that I release an EP which really reminds me of when I first started because back then I was not trying to make big EDM hits that would appeal to the commercial crowds, I was only aiming to produce the music that I Iiked and that I would have fun playing live.
Morten Breum: Yes, we were a bit stuck on what to make and once we got into this groove and started developing the sound it has been extremely inspiring. We just wanted to make music we really liked, not for money or anything like that, and I couldn’t be happier with the sound.
WS: Hemos visto en vuestras redes sociales que acumulabais una gran cantidad de ID juntos y que por ello decidisteis juntar varias de ellas en este EP. ¿Alguna razón en concreto para quedaros con esas cuatro? ¿Cuántas más tenéis previsto publicar?
DG: Ambos estamos de acuerdo en que nuestro tema favorito es ‘Kill Me Slow’, así que ese siempre tuvo un lugar en el EP. Empecé a trabajar en esta canción con Eyelar en un campamento de composición. Cuando empezó el confinamiento se la envié a MORTEN y nos dimos cuenta de que era del mismo estilo que otra melodía que ya teníamos por ahí y que nos encantaba. De hecho, decidimos lanzar ‘Nothing’ en este EP porque la habíamos pinchado como ID en directo varias veces y había una gran demanda para lanzarla. Como teníamos muchos temas decidimos sacar un EP completo. No estábamos seguros de estrenarlo ahora porque los DJs no pueden pincharla en este momento, pero también nos dimos cuenta de que había un gran hype en torno a este sonido Future Rave y queríamos sacarlo para que la gente lo disfrutara, a pesar de que los clubes estaban cerrados.
MB: No queríamos dejar que la situación actual se interpusiera en el camino de este movimiento que está creciendo, así que realmente sacamos el EP por el feedback y la emoción que hemos estado recibiendo sobre el Future Rave. No sabemos todavía cuántos más lanzaremos, pero sin duda vamos a seguir trabajando juntos. ¡Seguimos estando muy inspirados con este sonido y tenemos un montón de ideas!
WS: We have seen in your social media that you were gathering a lot of IDs together and that’s why you decided to put several of them together in this EP. Any particular reason to keep those four? How many more are you planning to release?
DG: We both agree that our favourite record is ‘Kill Me Slow’ so that one always had a place on the EP. I started working on this song with Eyelar at a writing camp. When the lockdown started I sent it to MORTEN and we both realized that it was in the same key as another melody we already had laying around and which we really loved. We actually decided to release ‘Nothing’ on this EP because we had played the ID live several times and there was a huge demand around it. Because we had a lot of tracks we decided to put out a full EP. We weren’t sure about releasing it now because DJs cannot play it live at the moment but we also realized that there was a huge hype around this ‘Future Rave’ sound and we wanted to put it out for people to enjoy, despite the clubs being closed.
MB: We didn’t want to let the current situation get in the way of the movement that’s growing so we really put out the EP due to the feedback and excitement we’ve been getting around Future Rave. We don’t know how many more we’re planning to release yet but we’re definitely going to keep working together. We are still extremely inspired by this sound and we have a ton of other ideas!
WS: A pesar de que habéis lanzado varias canciones juntos en este periodo, ya teníais contacto por varios remixes en los que MORTEN había participado para David. ¿Cómo fue vuestro primer encuentro y cómo ha evolucionado vuestra relación hasta el día de hoy?
DG: Éramos amigos mucho antes de que empezáramos a producir música juntos. Pasamos mucho tiempo en Ibiza, pero sólo hace un año desde que decidimos trabajar en el estudio juntos y hemos estado desarrollando nuestro sonido desde entonces.
MB: En realidad nos conocimos en Tomorrowland en 2013 y luego seguimos encontrándonos en festivales de todo el mundo, ¡así que con el tiempo nos acercamos!
WS: Although you have released several tracks together during this period, you already had contact with several remixes which Morten had made for David. How was your first meeting and how has your relationship evolved until today?
DG: We were friends long before we actually started producing music together. We hung out a lot in Ibiza and only decided to go in the studio together last year. We’ve been developing our sound ever since.
MB: We actually met at Tomorrowland in 2013 and then we kept running into each other at festivals around the world, so we eventually got closer!
WS: Pregunta para David: Debido al COVID-19 has realizado dos shows benéficos para recaudar fondos y han funcionado realmente bien. ¿Cómo ha sido todo el trabajo que tú y tu equipo habéis realizado para estas iniciativas? ¿Crees que si los clubes y festivales tardan en volver a la completa normalidad, podrás hacer otro livestream en los próximos meses?
DG: Estoy muy contento con lo que mi equipo y yo hemos conseguido. Fue mucho trabajo, pero también es increíble ver lo que hemos logrado crear en tan poco tiempo. Con los dos livestreams recaudamos más de 1,5 millones de dólares para obras de caridad, lo cual está muy bien. Estoy muy agradecido por la generosidad de la gente. Aún no tenemos planes precisos para otro livestream, pero me divertí mucho haciendo los de Miami y Nueva York, así que me encantaría hacerlo de nuevo.
WS: Question for David: Due to the COVID-19 you have played two charity shows to raise funds and they have worked really well. How has been all the work that you and your team have done for these initiatives? Do you think that if clubs and festivals take a while to get back to complete normality, you will be able to do another livestream within the next months?
DG: I am really happy with what my team and I have put together. It was a lot of work but it’s also amazing to see what we managed to create in such a short period of time. With the two live streams we raised over $1.5 million USD for charities which is very humbling, I’m very grateful for the people’s generosity. We have no precise plans for another live stream yet but I had a lot of fun doing the ones in Miami and New York so I’d love to do it again!
WS: Pregunta para MORTEN: Recordamos que hace pocos años producías temas más orientados a la música bass. ¿En qué estado de forma ves ese género actualmente? ¿Dirías que la transición a este future rave que haces con David ha sido un cambio meditado o más un proceso natural?
MB: Es cierto que hace unos años estaba en todas partes, pero volví a mis orígenes y a la manera en la que solía producir música, y junto con David creamos el sonido Future Rave. Sentíamos que a la música de los mainstage de EDM le faltaba algo, así que queríamos hacer música que pudiéramos pinchar en nuestros sets.
WS: Question for Morten: We remember that a few years ago you were producing more bass music-oriented tracks. How do you see that genre nowadays in terms of quality and scene? Would you say that the transition to this Future Rave you are doing with David has been a meditated change or more of a natural process?
MB: It’s true a few years ago I was kind of all over the place, but I went back to my roots, and how I used to produce music, and together with David we created Future Rave sound. We felt like the music that was made for the EDM mainstage was missing something, so we wanted to make music we could play in our sets.
WS: Pregunta para David: En tu último álbum de estudio, ‘7’, tuviste grandes colaboradores de la escena mainstream, pero nos gustaría destacar el trabajo realizado bajo el alias Jack Back. ¿Echabas de menos jugar con la música house como hacías en los años 90? ¿Cómo valoras que tantos artistas hayan decidido apostar fuertemente por el tech house en los últimos dos-tres años? ¿Tienes algún tema nuevo que vaya a ver la luz dentro de poco bajo este pseudónimo?
DG: Jack Back ha sido un gran proyecto para mí, para volver a mis raíces y acoger la música que solía tocar cuando empecé mi carrera. El tech house es definitivamente lo que se considera más top en este momento y me encanta. También he colaborado con muchos artistas underground y seguro que habrá más lanzamientos por venir. Con el sonido Future Rave lo concebimos como un sonido rave que podría ser house, o un sonido rave que podría ser sexy.
WS: Question for David: In your last studio album, ‘7’, you had great collaborators from the mainstream scene, but we would like to highlight the work done under the alias Jack Back. Do you miss playing house music like you did in the 90s? How do you value that so many artists have decided to bet strongly on tech house in the last 2-3 years? Do you have any new tracks that will soon be released under this alias?
DG: Jack Back has been a really great project for me to go back to my roots and embrace the music I used to play when I first started my career. Tech house is definitely what is considered to be cool at the moment and I love it, I’ve also collaborated with a lot of underground artists and for sure there will be more releases to come. With the future rave sound we envisioned it as a rave that could be house, or a rave that could be sexy.
WS: Pregunta para MORTEN: Eres de Dinamarca y aquí, en España, no conocemos mucho la escena de tu país. ¿Podrías hablarnos sobre los estilos que más escuchan allí los fans de la música electrónica y recomendarnos a artistas que creas que lo están haciendo bien o tienen buena proyección de futuro?
MB: Para ser sincero, la escena dance en Dinamarca está bastante muerta, la mayoría de los artistas de electrónica hacen música para las listas de reproducción de Spotify y no para los fans. La música urbana es algo enorme en Dinamarca. Sin embargo, me gustaría señalar a Toby Green y Mike Hawkins. Los dos están petándolo, ¡y sin duda no hay que perderlos de vista!
WS: Question for Morten: You are from Denmark and here in Spain we don’t know much about the scene in your country. Could you tell us about the most popular styles within electronic music fans and recommend us some artists that you think are doing well or could have a bright future?
MB: To be honest, the Dance scene in Denmark is pretty dead, most of the electronic artists make music for Spotify playlisting and not the fans – urban music is huge in Denmark. I would however point out Toby Green and Mike Hawkins. They’re both killing it, and for sure are ones to watch!
