Volvemos un lunes más con una entrevista, y esta vez de alto calibre. Desde Rusia con amor y potentes drops llega a nuestro medio BYOR, una de las promesas y realidades más grandes del panorama del bass house. Gracias a su sonido característico ha conseguido en pocos años hacerse un hueco en la industria, siendo un fijo en Musical Freedom y con hits tan icónicos como ‘Feeling Right’, ‘Leave Me Again’ o ‘Feel That Way’.
Actual número 17 del Top 101 Producers de 1001 Tracklists y rompiéndolo con su track publicado en Tomorrowland Music, ‘Let It Drop’, hemos conseguido charlar con él acerca de sus inicios, la vuelta a los shows tras la pandemia, su relación con el sello de Tiësto, sus últimas collabs como ‘Downtown’ junto a VINNE o su variedad de registros que le hacen un productor tan brillante actualmente. ¡Pasen y disfruten de la entrevista de este lunes junto a BYOR!
WOLOLO SOUND: ¡Muy buenas George! Es un placer tener a uno de los artistas más prometedores de la escena club aquí en Wololo Sound. Lo primero de todo, ¿qué tal va todo? Tanto a nivel profesional, como a nivel personal.
BYOR: ¡Muchas gracias! Todo va bien. Me disculpo de antemano con todas las chicas, ya que hace un par de meses le propuse matrimonio a mi novia y nos vamos a casar muy pronto 😀 Profesionalmente, todo está guay, no sé ni qué decir. Me están entrevistando, ¡así que voy por el buen camino!
WOLOLO SOUND: What’s up George! It’s our pleasure to have one of the upcoming talents in the club scene with us here in Wololo Sound. First and foremost, how’s everything going, both personally and professionally?
BYOR: Thank you, everything is great! I apologize in advance to all the girls, but a couple of months ago I proposed to my girlfriend and very soon we will be married 😀 Professionally, everything is super, I don’t even know what to say here. I’m being interviewed, so I’m on the right track!
WS: Para quien no lo sepa, tu alias BYOR es en verdad el acrónimo de ‘Bring Your Own Rules’ (Trae Tus Propias Reglas). ¿Cómo de identificado te sientes con esta frase para decidir usarla como tu nombre artístico?
B: ¡Por supuesto! Muy a menudo, conozco en mi camino a gente que ha intentado cambiar mi forma de ver el mundo. Y cuando pienso en lo que quiero convencer a la gente en términos de mi ideología, es definitivamente que tienes que mantenerte fiel a tí mismo y marcar tus propiar reglas en el juego, y solo entonces podrás ser quien de verdad eres.
WS: For those who don’t know, your alias BYOR is an acronym that stands for ‘Bring Your Own Rules’. How important is that sentence to you to the point of using it as your artistic name?
B: Of course yes! Very often on my way, I met people who tried to change my view of the world. And when I thought about what I want to convey to people in terms of my ideology, it’s definitely that you need to be true to yourself and set your own rules in the game and only then you can be who you really are.
WS: El año pasado realizaste un ‘behind the artist’ en el canal de Musical Freedom muy interesante y curioso en el que, además de presentar a tu loro Pasha y a tu perro Nitka, hablabas de tu camino artístico hasta el día de hoy, pasando de bailar Can Can a realizar beatbox, y de ahí a adentrarte en el estudio. Lo primero, ¿qué tal están tus queridas mascotas? Y lo segundo, ¿Cómo ha sido el camino hasta decantarte finalmente por producir música y poder vivir de ello?
B: Gracias, están viviendo como reyes, o al menos intento hacer todo lo que puedo para que sea así.
La decisión de empezar a componer música fue bastante obvia en mi caso ya que siempre me ha tocado de cerca. Si te adentras en la historia, era un DJ local en mi ciudad, pinchando en todo tipo de bares y clubes, pero me dí cuenta muy rápido que quería ir más allá, y una ciudad no era suficiente para mí. Después de analizar todas las opciones de desarrollo, llegué a la conclusión de que debía probar a hacer música, y más ya que siempre he tenido mi propia visión de ella y a menudo hacía versiones de los temas añadiendo lo que creía que le faltaba. Por alguna razón siempre tenía miedo de empezar, pero gracias a cierta gente de mi entorno, me puse con ello.
WS: Last year you were featured in a very interesting Musical Freedom’s ‘behind the artist’, in which apart from introducing your parrot Pasha and your dog Nitka, you talked about your artistic journey until today, from dancing Can Can to beatboxing, and from there getting into the studio. First, how are your lovely pets doing? And secondly, how was the road to finally deciding to produce music and make a living of it?
B: Thank you, they are living their best life, at least I try to do everything to make it so.
The decision to start writing music was quite obvious in my case since I was always close to it. If you go into history, I was a local DJ in my city, playing in all sorts of bars and clubs, but I realized very quickly that I wanted to go further and one city was not enough for me. After analyzing all the development options, I concluded that it was time to try myself in writing music, especially since I always had my own view on it and I often made different edits to tracks in which I thought something was missing. For some reason, I was always afraid to start, but thanks to certain people from my environment, I started doing it.
WS: Musical Freedom se podría decir que, aunque has publicado también en otros sellos, es tu hogar musical por todo lo vivido hasta el momento. ¿Qué tal es la relación con el sello de Tiësto? ¿Sientes que es el mejor sitio posible para seguir creciendo?
B: ¡La relación es genial! Creo en su equipo, y su equipo cree en mí, así que definitivamente sí. El equipo de Musical Freedom trabaja mucho en mis temas y en el crecimiento de mi nombre. ¡Estoy muy agradecido a todo el equipo por creer en mí!
WS: Despite having been released on many labels, we could say Musical Freedom is your musical home for what you’ve lived with them so far. How’s your relation with Tiësto’s label? Do you feel it’s the right place to be in order to keep growing?
B: The relationship is great! I believe in their team, and their team believes in me, so definitely yes. The Musical Freedom team is doing a lot of work on my tracks and on the growth of my name. I am very grateful to the whole team for believing in me!
WS: Tu potente estilo a la hora de producir, destacando sobre todo los leads y basslines, es una marca personal tuya. Pero de vez en cuando también produces tracks más emotivos y melódicos como ‘The Cure’. Cuando te sientas enfrente del ordenador para comenzar un tema, ¿qué pasos sigues para estructurar tu idea? ¿Te cuesta mucho plasmarla o sueles fluir con facilidad a la hora de crear tu música?
B: De hecho, siempre es distinto, pero a menudo depende de mi humor. Cuando no te apetece nada en concreto, quieres experimentar y hacer algo inusual. Cuando sí, solamente quieres hacer un rompepistas para clubes y festivales. Y por supuesto, hay veces que nada sale y tienes que trabajar en una misma idea durante días, y otras que acaba saliendo todo y queda hecho en 2-3 horas. Si te soy sincero, ni yo sé cómo funciona 🙂
WS: Your powerful style of production, mainly known for its leads and basslines, is like a personal signature. Despite that, you also make more emotional and melodic tracks such as ‘The Cure’ from time to time. When you sit in front of the computer to start a track, what steps do you follow to structure the main idea? Is it difficult for you to write it down or do you flow smoothly when creating music?
B: In fact, it’s always different, but it all depends on the mood most often. When there is no mood, you want to experiment and do something unusual. When there is, you just want to make a dance floor banger for clubs and festivals. And of course, sometimes nothing happens and you have to work on one idea for several days, and sometimes everything turns out to be done in 2-3 hours. To be honest, I don’t know how it works 🙂
WS: Aunque habías publicado en varios sellos anteriormente desde el 2014, aquí en 2019 lanzaste tu primer gran éxito a nivel mundial ‘Feel That Way’. ¿Qué se siente cuando ves que tu trabajo de tantos años traspasa esa barrera que te eleva al siguiente nivel dentro de la industrial?
B: En ese momento, me pareció una señal llegada de arriba, porque justo llevaba cinco años haciendo música y me dije a mi mismo que si nada especial pasaba entonces, entonces probablemente acabaría haciéndolo, porque eran momentos difíciles y la música no me daba nada de dinero. Pero mirando atrás, estoy muy orgulloso de haber tenido la fuerza y espíritu de pasar por esto. No ha sido un camino corto.
WS: Despite having been released on many labels from 2014, in 2019 you released your first worldwide success called ‘Feel That Way’. After all these years, how does it feel when you see your work crossing boundaries and getting you onto the next level into the industry?
B: At that moment, it became a sign from above for me, because at that time I was doing music exactly 5 years ago and decided for myself that if something special doesn’t happen now, then most likely I will finish doing it, because then there were difficult times and music didn’t bring money at all. But looking back, I am proud that I had the strength and spirit to go through this. Not a small path.
WS: Desde ese tema, has lanzado varias grandes canciones como ‘Feeling Right’, ‘Leave Me Again’, ‘Keep On Dancin’, o tu último éxito ‘Downtown’ junto al brasileño VINNE. Este track ha recibido mucho apoyo por parte de artistas como Martin Garrix, CID o Morten y llegó a estar el número 1 en Trending Tracks de 1001 Tracklists incluso antes de su lanzamiento. ¿Cómo surgió esta colaboración? ¿Te esperabas tal apoyo y buen recibimiento?
B: Siempre he pinchado temas de VINNE en mis sesiones, ¡y cuando me ofrecieron colaborar con él accepté sin dudarlo! VINNE es un productor muy guay y talentoso, me encanta su estilo y, por supuesto, por el tipo de persona que es tenemos una buena conexión. ¡Estaba claro, esperaba un buen recibimiento porque es una bomba para las pistas de baile!
WS: Since that track, you have released other big tunes such as ‘Feeling Right’, ‘Leave Me Again’, ‘Keep On Dancin’, or your last ‘Downtown’ together with VINNE. This track has received lots of support from many artists such as Martin Garrix, CID, or Morten, and it ended up being number 1 on Trending Tracks at 1001Tracklists even before its release. How did this last collaboration happen? Did you expect such a warm welcome and support?
B: I have always played VINNE tracks in my sets and when I was offered to make a collab with him, I agreed without hesitation! VINNE is a very cool and talented producer, I really like his style and of course, the kind of person he is, we are in good connection with him! Of course, I expected such a warm welcome, because it’s a cannonball for the dance floors!
WS: Mencionando a CID, la temporada pasada tuvimos el placer de charlar con él y nos contó que tiene una gran relación contigo e incluso le mandas vídeos de Pasha bailando, y que te augura un futuro brillante por delante. También nos confesó que tenía echado el ojo a un par de temas más tuyos para lanzarlos a través de su sello ‘Night Service Only’, pero que al final decidiste sacarlos por otro sello. ¿Ha tenido una gran influencia tu relación con CID en tu crecimiento como artista? ¿Te veremos de nuevo por su label?
B: Claro que sí. Carlos es uno de los primeros productores y DJs que dio un gran apoyo a mi música y por supuesto me dio la oportunidad de lanzar mi música en su sello, me acuerdo de ese momento. Estaba muy feliz de empezar a contactar con una leyenda como él, ¡por lo cual tiene mi respeto de por vida! Y creo que sí, algún día volveré a su sello con nueva música, o tal vez con una colaboración con él 🙂
WS: Talking about CID, last season we had the pleasure of chatting with him and he told us that you both have a good relationship and he foresees a bright future for you. He also told us that he had an eye on a couple of your tracks to release them on his label Night Service Only, but that you finally chose to sign them on other labels. Did this relationship with CID influence you in your growth as an artist? Will we see you on his label again?
B: Definitely yes. Carlos is one of the first producers and DJs who gave huge support to my music and of course gave me the opportunity to release my music on his label, I remember that time. I was very happy to start communicating with a legend like him, for which he has my lifelong respect! And I think yes, one day I will return to his label with new music, or maybe even a collab with him 🙂
WS: En pocos años te has convertido en uno de los productores referencia del panorama del bass house y de la música club en general, entrando directamente el año pasado hasta la posición 16 en el Top 101 Producers de 1001 Tracklists. ¿Te sorprendió recibir tanto apoyo de tus compañeros de profesión como para alcanzar este puesto tan privilegiado del ranking?
B: ¡Por supuesto me sorprendió! Estoy muy satisfecho de que mi música haya tenido el apoyo de una cifra tan alta de DJs alrededor del mundo. Pero no puedo ignorar el trabajo del equipo de Musical Freedom, que sigue haciendo excelentes campañas de promoción para mi música.
WS: In a small period of time you’ve become one of the top producers in the Bass House scene and in club music in general, sneaking into last year’s Top 101 Producers from 1001Tracklists right into the 16th position. Were you surprised to receive such big support from your colleagues to the point of reaching this privileged place in that ranking?
B: Of course I was surprised! I am very pleased that my music is supported by a large number of DJs around the world! But I can’t ignore the work of the Musical Freedom team, which continues to make an excellent promo campaign for my music.
WS: Por cierto, hablando de rankings, estamos a las vueltas de la esquina para que se conozca tanto el Top 100 de DJMag como el Top 101 Producers de 1001 Tracklists. ¿Qué sensaciones tienes respecto a los resultados? ¿Crees que volverás a estar arriba en el ranking de 1001 Tracklists?
B: Mi opinión es la misma que la de todos los demás, que el Top 101 Producers es una valoración honesta de ciertas figuras, mientras que el DJ Mag Top 100 tiene una valoración más cuestionable ya que de las posiciones 50 al 100 apenas conozco a nadie 😀 Y respecto al hecho de que si voy a llegar ahí o no, mi equipo y yo estamos trabajando en ello y haremos lo que podamos para no perder la oportunidad.
Actualización: BYOR ha quedado el 17º este año en el Top 101 Producers.
WS: By the way, talking about rankings, DJ Mag and 1001Tracklists’ are around the corner. What’s your opinion on both lists? Do you feel you’ll be up there again on 1001’s?
B: The opinion is rather like everyone else’s, Top 101 Producers is an honest rating based on certain figures, DJ Mag Top100 is a dubious rating for me since in 2021 I hardly know anyone from 50 to 100 places 😀 And as for whether I will be there again or not, my team and I are working on it and will do our best not to give up positions!
Update: BYOR has been ranked 17th on the Top 101 Producers of this year.
WS: Y a lo que ya no tenemos que esperar es a poder disfrutar de bailar de nuevo en las pistas de baile. En España todavía estamos arrancando de nuevo, pero a ti ya te hemos visto en varias fiestas por Moscú, Kazan y en tu ciudad natal Nizhni Nóvgorod. ¿Cómo estás llevando esta vuelta a los escenarios? ¿Había ganas de poder reencontrarte con el público después de todos los problemas que ha causado el COVID?
B: Si te soy sincero, las restricciones relacionadas con un alto porcentaje de gente infectada han empezado de nuevo en Rusia y estamos otra vez confinados. Estoy deseando que termine todo y finalmente pueda venir a España, por ejemplo 🙂
WS: What we cannot wait any longer is to enjoy and dance again on the dancefloors. In Spain, it’s starting to come back, but we’ve already seen you at a few parties in Moscow, Kazan, and in your hometown Nizhni Nóvgorod. How are you dealing with the return to the DJ booth? Were you looking forward to meeting the crowd again after all the problems COVID caused?
B: To be honest, restrictions related to a high percentage of infected people have started again in Russia and now we are again in quarantine. I’m looking forward to when it’s all over to finally come to Spain, for example 🙂
WS: Ahora que todo está volviendo poco a poco a la normalidad, suponemos que tendrás un arsenal de lanzamientos preparados para hacernos bailar. ¿Hay algo que nos puedas adelantar en exclusiva para Wololo Sound?
B: Desafortunadamente, no puedo adelantar nada de los próximos temas, ¡pero puedo asegurar que hay un montón de cosas interesantes esperándoos! Aunque bueno, haré una excepción especialmente para Wololo Sound: mi remix del tema Burak Yeter – Oh My My, que ha acabado siendo un sonido muy experimental para mí, debería salir pronto. Así que atentos a las noticias.
WS: Now that everything’s going back to normal, we bet you’ll have lots of releases ready to make us dance. Is there anything you can tell us in advance exclusively for Wololo Sound?
B: Unfortunately, I can’t provide information on the following tracks yet, but I can assure you there are a lot of interesting things waiting for you! Although okay, I’ll make an exception especially for Wololo Sound: my remix of the track Burak Yeter – Oh My My, which turned out to be like an experimental sound for me, should be released very soon. Therefore, follow the news.
