¡Última entrevista del año 2020 en Wololo Sound! Parecía que este fatídico año no se acabaría nunca, pero estamos ya en las últimas semanas para entrar a 2021 por la puerta grande. Por nuestra parte tenemos un invitado muy especial para cerrar este año con vosotros, nada más ni nada menos que ¡Blinders! Hemos podido charlar con Mateusz acerca de su versatilidad musical, el ambiente y libertad de trabajo en STMPD RCRDS, sus famosos livestreams en cuarentena, su último lanzamiento ‘Motorsport’ y futuros proyectos que se avecinan.

WOLOLO SOUND: ¡Muy buenas Mateusz! Es un placer tener por Wololo Sound a un artista tan consolidado en el panorama actual y que tiene a su vez un futuro tan prometedor. Lo primero de todo: ¿Qué tal estás? ¿Cómo te sientes ahora con Blinders?
BLINDERS: Hey, estoy bien, ¡gracias! El proyecto de Blinders está yendo bien. Me centré en hacer más música que nunca este año ya que no hubo festivales. He tenido un montón de lanzamientos este año, incluyendo colaboraciones con Afrojack bajo su alias NLW, SWACQ o Cesqeaux.
WOLOLO SOUND: Hello Mateusz! It is our pleasure to have such an established artist in the actual scene, with such a bright future. First things first, we want to ask you: how are you? How do you feel right now with your Blinders project?
B: Hey, I’m good thank you! Blinders project is doing great. I was focused on making music more than ever as there was no festivals this year. I had a lot of releases this year including collaborations with Afrojack as NLW, SWACQ or Cesqeaux.
WS: Llevas ya algunos años publicando en sellos de alto nivel, primero Armada, después Protocol y desde hace unos años STMPD. ¿Cómo ha sido este viaje desde los inicios hasta el día de hoy?
B: Sí, ¡ha pasado un buen tiempo! Todos estos sellos son geniales. Estoy lanzando mis canciones en el sello STMPD RCRDS ahora mismo y me siento bien. Me dan total libertad y confían en mi nueva música.
WS: You have been releasing songs in top labels for the last few years. To name a few, Armada, Protocol and lately, STMPD. How has this trip been from the beginning until now?
B: Yes it’s been a long time! All these labels are great. I’m releasing my songs via STMPD RCRDS label right now and I’m feeling good. They give me total freedom and trust my new music.
WS: Tu último tema ‘Motorsport’ está inspirado en tu pasión por el mundo del motor, y a su vez por algunos de tus referentes como Gesaffelstein o Justice. ¿Es la canción con más significado para ti hasta el momento?
B: ¡Sí! En my juventud era muy fan de estos artistas. Escuchaba básicamente dirty electro / mid tempo como Gesaffelstein y Justice pero también The Chemical Brothers, The Bloody Beetroots, Boys Noize, Crookers, etc. Creo que me dieron mucha inspiración cuando creé ‘Motorsport‘.
WS: Your latest track ‘Motorsport’ is inspired not only by your passion for the motor world, but also by some of your idols like Gesaffelstein or Justice. Is this the song with more meaning for you until date?
B: Yes! In my younger ages I was a big fan of these artists. I listened mostly to dirty electro / mid tempo music like Gesaffelstein, Justice but also Chemical Brothers, Bloody Beetroots, Boys Noize, Crookers etc. I think it gave me a lot of inspiration when making “Motorsport”.
WS: Hablando de significado, hemos leído que algunos de los artworks de tus canciones están hechos por tu novia. ¿Cómo es el proceso creativo? ¿Os ayudáis el uno al otro en vuestros proyectos?
B: Efectivamente. Me gusta traducir mi visión también en el lado visual de cualquier tema que lanzo. Así que empezamos todas las ideas creando resúmenes/storyboards juntos antes de que Ada empiece a trabajar en su proyecto. Trabajar así ayuda a los diseñadores a entender lo que quiero contar con mi canción, de esta forma cualquier visual y música estarán cohesionados juntos mucho mejor que trabajando en proyectos separados.
WS: Speaking about meaning, we have read that some of the artworks for your tracks are made by your girlfriend. How is the creative process? Have you helped each other on your projects?
B: Indeed. I like to translate my vision also in a visual side of every track which I release. So we start every idea with creating briefs/storyboards together before Ada starts to work on her project. Working like this helps designers to understand what I wanted to tell with my song, so any visual and music will be glued together way better than working on projects separately.
WS: Con ‘Motorsport’ te has atrevido con el midtempo sin perder tu esencia de la música electro. En mayo entrevistamos a Watse de Jong y Steven Hiemstra, el equipo de A&R de STMPD RCRDS, y nos dijeron que el sello no se limita a un único género. ¿Piensas seguir experimentando con otros estilos?
B: ¡Por supuesto! Esto es lo que deberías hacer en mi opinión como artista, al menos de vez en cuando. De lo contrario te puedes quedar atrapado en tu propio estilo sin innovaciones, y te puede acabar pareciendo aburrido no solamente a ti, sino también a tus oyentes. Este año he probado con el drum and bass con mi remix a la canción de K-Pop ‘Yours‘, también he probado el mid tempo como has dicho pero no quiero parar y definitivamente experimentaré con más géneros en el futuro.
WS: With ‘Motorsport’ you have taken a shot with Mid Tempo without losing your style towards Electro Music. In May, we interviewed Watse De Jong and Steven Hiemstra, from the A&R team at STMPD RCRDS, and they told us that the label does not want to limit in terms of genres. Are you thinking of keeping experimenting with other kinds of music?
B: Of course! This is what you should do at least from time to time as an artist in my opinion. Otherwise you can get stuck in a trap of your own style and without any innovations it may became boring for you but also your listeners. This year I tried drum and bass with my remix of K-Pop song “Yours”, I tried also mid-tempo as you said but I don’t want to stop and I will be definitely experimenting with more genres in the future.
WS: Una de tus canciones con mayor impacto fue ‘Breach (Walk Alone)’ junto a Martin Garrix. ¿Qué es lo que se te pasa por la cabeza cuando trabajas con el DJ número 1 del mundo por aquel entonces?
B: Fue un gran honor, por supuesto. Pero al mismo tiempo tenemos una relación muy guay y amistosa, sentía que estaba trabajando en algo con mi buen viejo amigo. Él es una persona muy positiva y aporta mucha buena energía al proceso de producción musical.
WS: One of your songs with the biggest impact was ‘Breach (Walk Alone)’ together with Martin Garrix. What is on your mind when you get to work with the number one DJ of that moment?
B: It was a big honor of course. But we’re in a very cool, friendly relationship so at the same time I felt like I’m working on something with my good old friend. He’s a very positive person so it brings a lot of good energy to the process of making music.
WS: Desde 2017 llevas vinculado al sello de Martin, STMPD RCRDS, y muchos de tus amigos como Julian Jordan, TV Noise o Sikdope son asiduos en el sello. ¿Consideras STMPD RCRDS y la gente que lo rodea como tu familia musical?
B: ¡Definitivamente! Actualmente el sello me dió la oportunidad de conocernos aún mejor, por ejemplo en algunas sesiones en los estudios de grabación de STMPD, o en backstages de festivales donde STMPD RCRDS tenía sus propios escenarios. Este sello tiene una gran cantidad de gente increíble.
WS: You have been close to STMPD RCRDS since 2017, and many of your colleagues like Julian Jordan, TV Noise or Sikdope are also really close to Martin’s label. Do you consider that STMPD RCRDS and the people around it are like your musical family?
B: Definitely! Actually the label gave me a chance to get to know each other with these guys even better, for example during some studio sessions at STMPD recording studios, or at festival backstages where STMPD RCRDS had their stages. This label has a crazy number of amazing people.
WS: En este parón de shows por culpa del coronavirus te hemos visto muy activo haciendo livestreams. Uno por tu cumpleaños, otro por el lanzamiento de tu single ‘Right Behind’, participaste en el festival online de STMPD RCRDS. ¿Te gustaría continuar haciendo livestreams una vez todo vuelva a la normalidad?
B: De hecho estuve más activo con esto al principio del COVID-19. Está bien hacer livestreams, pero después de algún tiempo me di cuenta de que quiero concentrarme en las ideas para mis próximas canciones. Además, el tiempo de confinamiento fue perfecto para ello, así que bajé el ritmo en otras cosas para centrarme únicamente en la música. Pero definitivamente haré más livestreams en el futuro.
WS: During this break from gigs because of COVID-19, we have seen that you were pretty active doing livestreams. One for your birthday, another one for the release of your single ‘Right Behind’, you also took part in STMPD RCRDS online festival,… Would you like to keep doing them once everything goes back to normal?
B: Actually I was more active with this at the beginning of COVID-19. It’s good to do livestreams, but after some time I realized that I want to focus my mind on ideas for next songs. Also the lockdown time was perfect for it, so I slowed down a bit with other things to focus on music only. But I will definitely do few more livestreams in the future.
WS: Además de estos livestreams, tuviste la idea de realizar ‘Blinders & Friends’, un mini festival alquilando una casa en junio con tus amigos tras el confinamiento en Polonia que se retransmitió a través de tu canal. ¿Cómo surgió la idea? ¿Tienes pensado repetir la fiesta el próximo año?
B: Eché mucho de menos los bolos y pensé que todos los DJs sentirían lo mismo. Por eso decidí invitar a mis amigos DJs a un apartamento, para lanzar una pequella house party, para poder volver a sentir esa “vibra” por unos instantes. Entonces pensé que por qué no retransmitirlo y conectar con mis fans. Algunos de mis amigos: TV Noise, Julian Jordan, Todd Helder,… estaban demasiado lejos para unirse a la fiesta, así que hicimos excepciones y grabamos sus sesiones desde sus casas. De todas formas, ¡me lo pasé muy bien y espero que podamos repetirlo en el futuro!
WS: Apart from those livestreams, you had the idea of creating ‘Blinders & Friends’, a mini-festival in which you and your friends rented a house in June after the quarantine in Poland, and you went live on your channel to broadcast it. How did you come up with the idea? Do you consider repeating the event next year?
B: I missed gigs a lot and I thought that every DJ had the same feeling. So I decided to invite my DJ friends to an apartment and throw a small house party, so we could feel “that vibe” for a moment. Then I thought why not to stream it and connect with fans. Some of my friends: TV Noise, Julian Jordan, Todd Helder were too far to join the party, so we made an exception and they recorded their DJ sets from their places. Anyway it was a great time and I hope we can repeat it in future!
WS: Ahora que 2021 está a la vuelta de la esquina y, esperemos, sea mejor que 2020. ¿Hay algún proyecto musical que nos vaya a sorprender? ¿Te veremos por España cuando la situación lo permita?
B: Quiero venir a España, por supuesto, ¡así que crucemos los dedos! Y sí, definitivamente tendré algunas sorpresas con mi música para el año que viene, ¡así que estad atentos!
WS: 2021 is around the corner, and let’s keep our fingers crossed and hope it will be better than 2020. Is there any musical project that will surprise us? Will you come to Spain once the situation improves?
B: I want to come to Spain of course, so fingers crossed! And yes, I will definitely have some surprises for the next year with my music so stay tuned!
