Séptima entrevista de la sexta temporada en Wololo Sound. En esta ocasión, nuestro invitado de hoy es uno de los nombres más conocidos de la escena electro house y big room. Hablamos del DJ y productor belga Yves V, residente del mejor festival del mundo, Tomorrowland. En motivo de su visita a España el pasado mes de julio (Unite With Tomorrowland) tuvimos una pequeña charla con él sobre su carrera, su papel como DJ residente en el festival de festivales, sus últimos lanzamientos, así cómo el análisis que hace de la escena española. Sin más dilación, os dejamos con la entrevista:

Wololo Sound: Hola, Yves. Es un placer tener la oportunidad de entrevistarte. En primer lugar, ¿qué se siente al ser nombrado DJ residente de Tomorrowland?
Yves V: Es la mejor sensación del mundo y nunca se vuelve menos mágica.
Wololo Sound: Hi, Yves. It’s a pleasure to have the opportunity to interview you. First of all, how does it feel to be named a Tomorrowland resident DJ?
Yves V: It’s the best feeling in the world and it never gets any less magical.
WS: Has estado pinchando muchas veces en el festival; en tu opinión, ¿cuál es la verdadera magia de Tomorrowland?
YV: Creo que la gente y los fans que vienen de todo el mundo experimentan la magia. Ver todas las diferentes banderas nacionales en las multitudes cada año es increíble y muestra de que no importa de dónde seas. El poder de la música es universal.
WS: You’ve been playing so many times at the festival; in your opinion, which is the real magic of Tomorrowland?
YV: I think the people and fans that come from all over the world to experience the magic. To see all the different national flags in the crowds every year is amazing and shows that no matter where you are from. The power of music is universal.
WS: Participaste con tu propio escenario ‘V Sessions’ en Tomorrowland, ¿cómo logras construir el line-up y seleccionar a los invitados?
YV: Varía año tras año, pero generalmente es una combinación de personas en la escena en las que estoy realmente interesado en varios géneros, así como quizás compañeros con los que he colaborado o he querido involucrarme con V Sessions por un tiempo. Puede tomar muchas líneas de investigación y reducirlo puede ser difícil, pero tenemos mucha suerte cada año.
WS: You hosted your own stage ‘V Sessions’ at Tomorrowland, how do you manage to build the lineup and select the guests for it?
YV: It varies year to year but it’s usually a combination of people in the scene that I’m really into across a number of genres, as well as maybe peers I’ve collaborated with or have been wanting to get involved with V Sessions for a while! It can take many lines of research and to whittle it down can be difficult but we get very lucky every year.
WS: ¿Cómo ves la marca Tomorrowland en los próximos años? ¿Crees que este fenómeno global crecerá aún más? (Más festivales en el extranjero, asociaciones con marcas más grandes…)
YV: Creo que sí. Cada año trabajamos con nuevos socios, organizamos fiestas UNITE para reunir a los fans que no pudieron llegar a Bélgica y la producción del festival no conoce límites. Creo que como marca y un faro al que acuden personas y artistas, el futuro solo es brillante.
WS: How do you see the brand Tomorrowland in the next upcoming years? Do you think this global phenomena will be growing even more? (more festivals abroad, partnerships with bigger brands…)
YV: I think so – every year we work with new partners, host UNITE parties to bring together the fans who couldn’t make it to Belgium and the production of the festival knows no limits. I think as a brand and a beacon that people and artists flock to, the future is only bright.
WS: Hablemos de tus raíces. Vienes de Amberes, Bélgica, ¿cómo es la escena allí? ¿Tuviste dificultades para comenzar tu carrera de DJ?
YV: Sí, por supuesto, creo que cada DJ las tiene. En los inicios me era difícil conseguir conciertos regularmente y dejé una carrera estable como maestro para dedicarme completamente a la música, lo que fue un salto aterrador para cualquiera y, a veces, pensé “¿He tomado la decisión correcta?”. Cuando crees en ti mismo y confías en tu instinto, cualquier cosa puede suceder.
WS: Let’s talk about your roots. You come from Antwerp, Belgium, how is the scene there? Did you have any difficulties at the begging of your DJ career?
YV: Yes of course, I think every DJ does. In the early days it was difficult to get gigs regularly and I left a stable career as a teacher to pursue music full time, which was a scary leap for anyone and sometimes, I thought “Have I made the right decision?”. When you believe in yourself and trust your gut, anything can happen.
WS: ¿Cuáles han sido tus influencias musicales?
YV: Todos, desde grandes estrellas como Daft Punk, hasta artistas de trance belgas como Push y tipos como Jeff Mills. Escucho muchos géneros diferentes que creo que se alimentan, no solo de mis producciones, sino también de mis sets en vivo.
WS: Which have been your musical influences?
YV: Everyone from huge stars like Daft Punk, over to Belgian trance artists like Push and guys like Jeff Mills – I listen to a lot of different genres which I think feeds into not only my productions but my live sets, too.
WS: Este año 2019 lanzaste una re-versión de un todo un “clásico”: ‘Teenage Crime’ de Adrian Lux, ¿cómo surgió esta idea y cuál fue el proceso creativo para esa canción?
YV: Fue realmente nuestra interpretación moderna la base del proceso creativo. Darle una nueva toma fue un proceso que realmente disfruté, pero fue importante para mí no hacerlo completamente irreconocible. Me encanta el clásico, muy progresivo y lo convertimos en una melodía house con big room, ¡muy divertido!
WS: This year 2019 you released a future house re-version of a ‘classic’: ‘Teenage Crime’ by Adrian Lux, how did this idea came across and which was the creative process for that track?
YV: It was really our modern day interpretation that was the basis of the creative process. To give it a fresh take was a process I really enjoyed but it was important for me to also not make it completely unrecognizable. I love the classic, very progressive and we flipped that into a house-meets-big-room tune – so much fun!
WS: Como productor, solías ser conocido en el pasado por temas ‘big room’ y ‘electro house’ muy potentes como ‘Madagascar’, ‘WOW’, ‘That Big’ y muchos otros. El ‘future house’ está realmente presente en tus últimas producciones, ¿por qué decidiste jugar con otros géneros musicales? ¿Cómo te sientes al cambiar y hacer cualquier otro tipo de música electrónica?
YV: Creo que pueden coexistir muchos géneros diferentes; muchos DJs que tocan música house ahora también tocan big room o trance, y es genial que ahora podamos crear de esta manera y hacer que nuestros sets y producciones sean variados, es simplemente algo positivo para la industria.
WS: As a producer, you used to be known in the past by very powerful big room and electro house tracks such as ‘Madagascar’, ‘WOW’, ‘That Big’ and many others. Future house music is really present in your latest productions, why you decided to mess around with other musical genres? How do you feel by changing and making any other kind of electronic music?
YV: I think a lot of different genres can coexist; a lot of DJs that play house music now also play big-room or trance, and it’s great that now that we can create this way and make our sets and productions varied – it’s only a positive thing for the industry.
WS: El pasado 27 de julio actuaste en la ciudad de Barcelona para Unite With Tomorrowland… ¿cómo te sentiste al regresar por tercer año consecutivo para tocar en un espectáculo tan increíble en España?
YV: Me divierto mucho en España, vuestro público está loco y siempre me muestran mucho amor cuando os visito, así que representar a mi familia de Tomorrowland allí fue un gran espectáculo.
WS: The last 27th July you played in the city of Barcelona for the Unite With Tomorrowland show… how did you feel to come back for the third year in a row to play at such amazing show in Spain?
YV: I have so much fun in Spain, your crowds are crazy and always show me so much love when I visit, so to represent my Tomorrowland family there made for a great show.
WS: Tu nuevo sencillo con Afrojack e Icona Pop llamado ‘We Got That Cool’ lo lanzaste hace un par de meses, ¿cuál ha sido la recepción o la reacción de tus fans hasta ahora?
YV: ¡La recepción ha sido muy abrumadora! Nos está yendo súper bien en toda Europa con muchos de los grandes shows, alcanzamos varias listas de éxitos con ello y recibimos mucho apoyo de artistas durante la temporada de verano. Sigue rodando y rodando y estoy realmente orgulloso de este tema, conseguir que tanto Afrojack como Icona estuvieran en el lanzamiento fue increíble y para todos mis fans que lo transmitieron, ¡gracias!
WS: Your brand new single with Afrojack and Icona Pop called ‘We Got That Cool’ was released about a couple of months ago, which has been the reception or the reaction of your fans to it so far?
YV: The reception has been so overwhelming! We’re doing super well across Europe with a lot of the huge breakfast shows, reaching various A-lists with it and getting a lot of support from artists across the summer season. It keeps rolling and rolling and I’m really proud of this one, to get both Afrojack and Icona on the release was amazing and to all my fans streaming it, thank you!
WS: ¿Cómo ves la escena de la música electrónica española? ¿Crees que goza de un buen estado de salud?
YV: Totalmente, España siempre ha tenido una escena musical muy vibrante. Disfruto de tipos como Chus y Ceballos, son súper geniales, así como Dosem y luego Danny Avila, y lo ha hecho muy bien siendo un artista tan joven. ¡Ah, y Brian Cross es un súper DJ! Los eventos también ayudan, Mad Cool y Primavera son vistos como algunos de los mejores del mundo.
WS: How do you see the Spanish electronic music scene? Do you think it’s in a ‘good health’ condition?
YV: Very much so – Spanish has always had such a vibrant music scene. I enjoy guys like Chus & Ceballos, they’re super cool, as well as Dosem and then Danny Avila, and he’s done so well for such a young artist. Oh and Brian Cross is a super DJ! The events also help, Mad Cool and Primavera are seen as some of the best in the world!
