Wololo Sound – Hello Mees, thank you very much for accepting this interview, we are deeply delighted to have you in our media! We would like to start by asking you about your beginnings. We know that you started in the music world when you were very young, and that you have used several aliases as a producer before your current one. Could you tell us about your path to where you are today?

Vertile – I started making music when I was 15 or so, mixing bands and mastering productions. I made the tracks for them. I started doing my own music in 2015 like future bass-ish, house-ish tracks, and then I discovered hardstyle for whatever reason. I went to some party, which I wasn’t sure if I’d like hardstyle even… and the rest is history.

I discovered hardstyle at a pretty late age actually. And yes, I had some other aliases before Vertile but they weren’t really serious or anything. Vertile was my first serious step on my career.

WS – In the last 2 years you have managed to make a name for yourself among the best artists on the hard dance scene. You’ve collaborated with giants like Headhunterz, Rebelion, D-Sturb… You’ve even released a couple of anthems for major festivals such as Shockerz and REBiRTH. What do you think has been the key to your success in such a short period of time?

V – I think coming from another genre kind of helped me to have a different take in this one, because apparently my vision is different. I just did the things on my own way, you know, and other people may have been doing stuff that had already been done before, but I wasn’t aware of that. I just did it and apparently people liked it. And then yeah, it reached more people and it became a style or something like that, so I think that’s the key to what I’m doing.

WS – What would you say was the song that helped you the most to become more known in the industry?

V – I think it would be ‘Together We Grow’, but before that it would be ‘Change This Place’ by 2020, yes, when D-Sturb played it at livestreams several times, because there were no parties back then because of corona. The first time I played it was at Reverze. It was pretty good, it was the first time I ever heard the crowd screaming.

WS – The followers of hard dance music are noticing that what we used to know as hardstyle is drifting towards rawstyle. What do you think about this new trend?

V – Well, I think hardstyle needs to exist on its own. Although I like hard, like hard kicks pumping, distortion and so, I really think the key to music in general is the musicality, the melody and the feeling of music. And when it all disappears, I don’t know what will happen to this genre but I will always try to keep the music in there for everyone that loves it, of course. And to answer to your question, I really like shifting to raw, but I really think hardstyle also needs to stay there for the base, you know.

No sería divertido.

WS – Also, within rawstyle in general and your music in particular, zaagkicks are emerging and they are getting all kinds of opinions. What is your opinion about them? Do you feel there is more love or hate towards them when you are on stage and see people on the dancefloor?

V – Well, the thing is in the crowd it’s a huge reaction, but online there’s people like trashtalking and stuff. I don’t really mind them having their opinions. As long as you don’t overdo it, you know, because you don’t want zaagkicks to be an hour long. It would not be fun. Just for edition for a track, that’s fun, you know. But I think there’s nothing after zaag, I think it’s the most extreme sound ever.

So yeah, they’re controversial but if you don’t overdo it, it’s fun, if you do it correctly, it’s fun. But yeah, we shouldn’t all jump on it. Like, I think that’s going to really make everything so loud and too much. I think people will walk away at some point. That’s why I wan’t to keep music as the core of what I do.

WS – El año pasado lanzaste ‘Before I Wake’, tu colaboración con Headhunterz.

WS – Last year you released ‘Before I Wake’, your collab with Headhunterz. What was it like for you to collaborate with a “childhood hero”, as you said in the caption on an Instagram post?

V – That was a joke actually! Do you know why? Willem actually voiced one of my childhood cartoons, which is Rocket Power! That’s why the face in the picture and nobody got it, although we thought some people might get it. He was actually voicing also some computer games which I played also, and I discovered that and it was like “Yo! Did you voice that? That’s f*king amazing!”. Most people be like “Yo! That’s Headhunterz!” and I was more like “Yo! Did you voice that cartoon?”.

WS – The next question is a must, after the rumours on the internet. Are you preparing a new collaboration with him?

V – That’s something you’ll discover really soon 😉

WS – After releasing ‘Simulation’ more than a year ago, you and Rebelion presented your new song together on Qlimax: ‘Numb’. This track has been released a few weeks ago and the reception from the public couldn’t have been better. Why did you decide to revamp this Linkin Park classic? What was the creative process of the track?

V – We did it because both Gary, Raymond and me all love that Linkin Park’s era of music and the rock back in the day, like the ‘Meteora’ album which was their first big success, which put them in the mainstages of all big festivals. ‘Numb’ was our childhood song so we had to do it, and we did it. About the creative process, it was a lot of back and forth between us because they were out of the country, me too sometimes. But yeah, we’ve never actually sat down or something. We just sent it back and forth.

WS – These songs I’ve mentioned have something in common: you are behind the vocals in all of them. At the last REBiRTH Festival you presented your new show ‘Dimension X’ in which, besides being on the decks, you took the microphone to sing your own songs, something never seen before on the hard dance industry. How did you come up with this idea? How did you feel before and after the performance? Will we see this liveact at other festivals this season?

V – Well, every single person told me like “You should do it”, and I was like nah… After the show it was a relief because it was so well received by the public, but before I was really nervous, like I didn’t talk, I was in my own world. At these bookings (Maniacs Festival) it does not happen so much, but for the bigger ones, when I present something on socials and people will come and they want to see it. What if you f*ck it up?

And yes, we’re going to do it a lot. All the ‘Dimension X’ sets will have the vocals. I really try not to sing in these ones (Maniacs). I want to do it, and everyone asks for it, but I want to keep it special.

WS – It is true that, as we have said, despite your short career as Vertile you are already at the top of the hardstyle world. What dreams do you still have to fulfil? Do you have any surprises in store for the short or medium term?

V – I really want to keep being successful of course, but I want to maintain being happy with the stuff I make, presenting it and making the crowd happy as well. If that makes me happy and the crowd also, it’s win win. That’s actually the feeling I want to keep.

About the surprises, you can expect many new collabs with really big artists 😉

V – He estado aquí cuatro veces.

WS – You just got off the stage of Maniacs Festival, at Sala Groove in Pinto. It’s the first edition of this festival, but the line-up and the attendees have been at the level of big events. What did you think of the Madrid audience?

V – I’ve been here four times. My first time was in January 2022 in Fabrik, and I’ve been also to Megapanic and Super Volt!, and every time I come here I see more people coming, and that’s really good to see that it’s also growing in other countries. You know, it’s growing on me and I’m growing on them. I really always like the Spanish crowd, and also the same thing with like individual people. You are really warm, and I like that.

WS – Muchas gracias por la entrevista. ¡Esperamos verte pronto de nuevo por España!

V – ¡Yo también! ¡Ha sido un placer!

WS – Thank you so much for the interview. We hope to see you again in Spain soon!

V – Me too! It was a pleasure!
