Poca gente estará en desacuerdo si decimos que son la pareja del momento, uno de los estandartes del hardstyle a nivel mundial y de las figuras internacionales más visibles de este subgénero. Ellos son Thomas y Nigel, y juntos son Sub Zero Project. Antes de Defqon.1 Weekend Festival 2023 tuvimos la ocasión de charlar con ellos sobre su impacto en la escena, su himno del festival, ¡y mucho más!
Wololo Sound – ¡Hola Nigel y Thomas! Es para nosotros un placer teneros en nuestro medio. Para comenzar nos gustaría preguntaros, ¿cómo estáis? ¿Preparados para una nueva temporada de festivales?
Sub Zero Project – Gracias por recibirnos. Nos va muy bien y estamos más que preparados para la temporada de festivales de este año. Tenemos una agenda repleta de shows, ¡así que estamos deseando visitar todos los países!
Wololo Sound – Hello Nigel and Thomas! It is a pleasure to have you in our media. We would like to start by asking, how are you? Are you ready for a new festival season?
Sub Zero Project – Thank you for having us! We’re doing very well and we’re more than ready for this year’s festival season. We got a packed agenda, so we’re very excited to visit all the different countries!
WS – Sois dos artistas que lleváis lanzando música juntos durante prácticamente una década. En todo este tiempo hemos podido observar una gran evolución en vuestro sonido. ¿Cómo describiríais el camino de Sub Zero Project desde sus inicios hasta hoy en día?
SZP – Sentimos que todo ha sucedido muy rápido desde que empezamos hasta ahora. Hoy en día viajamos mucho y pinchamos en tantos festivales y eventos increíbles que a veces necesitamos un momento para darnos cuenta de adónde nos lleva nuestra música. Estamos muy contentos de cómo han ido las cosas hasta ahora y eso nos mantiene motivados para seguir trabajando en el futuro.
WS – You are two artists who have been releasing music together for almost a decade. In all this time we have been able to see a great evolution in your sound. How would you describe the path of Sub Zero Project from its beginnings to nowadays?
SZP – From the moment we started until now, we feel everything has gone by so fast. Nowadays we travel a lot and play at so many amazing festivals and events, that we sometimes need a moment to realize where our music brings us in the world. We’re very happy with how things worked out until now and it keeps us motivated to keep pushing for the future.
WS – En los últimos años habéis estado envueltos en diferentes proyectos, prácticamente anuales: ‘Contagion’, ‘Rave Into Space’, ‘Renaissance of Rave’ y ahora ‘Psychodelic’. ¿Qué diferencia a cada uno de ellos del resto? ¿Si tuvierais que elegir uno de ellos, cuál sería? ¿Sería posible un crossover de todos ellos en un mismo evento en el futuro?
SZP – Cada “episodio” tiene su propio tema, argumento y, por supuesto, música característica. Intentamos crear una experiencia completa en nuestros espectáculos. Esto se refleja en las visuales, que van acompañadas de la música compuesta para ese “viaje” concreto. Es difícil elegir el que más nos gusta. Todos tienen un significado especial para nosotros. ‘Renaissance of Rave’ fue muy especial, ya que simbolizó el regreso de los eventos en vivo tras la pandemia. ¿Y un único evento con todos los proyectos en uno? Imagina…
WS – In the last few years you have been involved nearly every year in different projects: ‘Contagion’, ‘Rave Into Space’, ‘Renaissance of Rave’ and now ‘Psychodelic’. What would you say are the main differences between all of them? If you had to choose one of them, which one would it be? Would a crossover between all of them in a single event be possible in the future?
SZP – Each “episode” has its own theme, storyline and of course signature music. We try to create an all round experience in our shows. You can see this back in the show visuals that are accompanied by the music that’s written for that specific “journey”. It’s hard to choose which one sticks out for us. They all have a special meaning to us. The ‘Renaissance of Rave’ was something extra special, as it symbolized the comeback of live dance events after the pandemic. And a single event with all the projects in one? Imagine that would happen…
WS – Es un hecho que, en la actualidad, es probable que Sub Zero Project sea una de las formaciones de hardstyle que está llegando a más personas, rozando el mainstream. ¿Hasta qué punto sentís que esto es cierto? ¿Pensáis que tenéis cierta responsabilidad como “representantes” del subgénero?
SZP – Toda la música que lanzamos procede exclusivamente de ideas creativas. Así que nunca tenemos en la cabeza un planteamiento estratégico para que la música sea “mainstream”. Dedicamos toda nuestra música a la pista de baile. Somos conscientes de que esto ha hecho que lleguemos a un público más amplio, ¡lo cual es increíble, por supuesto! Pero no nos vemos como “representantes” ni nada por el estilo. En general, creemos que el interés por el EDM más duro entre los asistentes a los festivales ha crecido mucho en los últimos años. Nuestro sonido parece encajar bien con esa tendencia en estos momentos.
WS – It is a fact that, at the moment, Sub Zero Project is probably one of the names in hardstyle that is reaching the most people, bordering the mainstream. Do you feel this is true? Do you think you have a certain responsibility as “representatives” of the sub-genre?
SZP – All the music that we bring out, comes purely from creative ideas. So there’s never a strategic approach in the back of our heads that wants to make the music “mainstream”. We fully dedicate our music to the dancefloor only. We are aware this has turned out to reaching a bigger audience, which is amazing of course! But we don’t see ourselves as “representatives” or anything. In general we feel the interest in harder EDM among the festival goers has grown a lot over the past years. Our sound seems to match well with that trend at the moment.
WS – Esto que comentaba se refleja en vuestra presencia en festivales como Ultra Miami, el hosting de un escenario en Tomorrowland, o incluso vuestras colaboraciones con gigantes de la electrónica como W&W, Timmy Trumpet o Hardwell. Hace unas semanas lanzasteis ‘Judgement Day’, vuestra colaboración con este último, la cual era esperadísima por vuestros fans. ¿Cómo surgió un proyecto tan especial como este? ¿Con qué otros artistas de EDM os gustaría poder colaborar?
SZP – Llevamos tiempo en contacto con Hardwell. Después de su set de regreso en Ultra Miami nos encontramos con él y fue entonces cuando decidimos crear algo juntos. El tema se terminó bastante rápido y es increíble ver que ha habido tanto revuelo en torno a ‘Judgement Day’. Ahora mismo estamos trabajando en más temas con otros grandes artistas, pero aún no podemos decir con quién…
WS – This is reflected in your presence at festivals like Ultra Miami, hosting a stage at Tomorrowland, or even your collabs with EDM giants like W&W, Timmy Trumpet or Hardwell. A few weeks ago you released ‘Judgement Day’, your collaboration with the latter, which was eagerly awaited by your fans. How did such a special project like this one come about? What other EDM artists would you like to collaborate with?
SZP – We’ve been in contact with Hardwell for a while already. After his come back set at Ultra Miami we bumped into him and it was then we decided to create something together. The track was finished pretty quickly and it’s awesome to see that there was a lot of hype around ‘Judgement Day’. Right now we’re working on some more tracks with other big artists, but we can’t say yet who…
WS – Este año habéis sido los responsables de producir una de las canciones que más hype generan a lo largo del año: el himno de Defqon.1, el festival de hard más importante del mundo. ¿Cuándo supisteis que seríais vosotros los que crearíais la banda sonora del festival este año? ¿Sentisteis presión cuando os pusisteis manos a la obra con el tema, o simplemente os dejasteis llevar?
SZP – Nos pidieron que hiciéramos el himno de Defqon.1 hace aproximadamente un año. Por supuesto, ser los responsables del himno de Defqon.1 genera presión, pero en cuanto llegamos al estudio las cosas fueron bastante bien. Estamos muy contentos con el resultado. Es un gran honor hacer este himno y estamos agradecidos de que se nos haya dado esta oportunidad.
WS – This year you were responsible for producing one of the tracks that generates the most hype throughout the year: the anthem of Defqon.1, the world’s biggest hard dance music festival. When did you know that you would be the ones to create the soundtrack for this year’s edition? Did you feel pressure when you started working on the song, or did you just let it flow?
SZP – We were asked to do the Defqon.1 anthem about a year ago. Of course being responsible for the Defqon.1 anthem creates pressure, but the moment we hit the studio things went pretty smooth. We’re very happy with how it turned out. It’s a big honour to be making this anthem and we’re grateful to be given this opportunity.
WS – Se sabe que pincharéis en varias ocasiones durante la próxima edición de Defqon.1, siendo una de ellas un B2B especial con Devin Wild. Tuvimos la ocasión de entrevistar a Devin hace unos meses y nos adelantó que estabais trabajando en una nueva colaboración de cara a este show. ¿Podéis contarnos algo más sobre ella? ¿Tenéis preparada alguna sorpresa más para este set o para otro de los que realizaréis en Defqon.1?
SZP – Sí, estamos trabajando con Devin Wild en algo ahora mismo, pero también con otros artistas. No queremos desvelar nada todavía, pero estrenaremos un montón de temas nuevos en Defqon.1, incluidos nuevos temas en solitario.
WS – It is known that you will be playing several times during the next edition of Defqon.1, one of them being a special B2B with Devin Wild. We had the chance to interview Devin a few months ago and he told us that you were working on a new collab for this show. Can you tell us more about it? Do you have any more surprises in store for this set or for another of the ones you’ll be playing at Defqon.1?
SZP – Yes, we’re working with Devin Wild on something right now, but also other artists. We don’t want to spill the beans yet, but we’ll premiering a lot of new tracks at Defqon.1, including new solos.
WS – Por último, durante 2023 hemos podido disfrutar de vuestros shows en España en dos ocasiones, ambas en Fabrik, siendo una de ellas una versión live de vuestro show ‘Psychodelic’. ¿Qué pensáis de la escena hard española? ¿Sentís el cariño del público de nuestro país cada vez que nos visitáis?
SZP – El público español siempre está lleno de energía, por eso nos encanta pinchar en España. Hace poco hicimos nuestro show ‘Psychodelic’ en Fabrik Madrid y el ambiente fue una locura. Tenemos más bolos en España este año, ¡así que estamos deseando que lleguen!
WS – Finally, during 2023 we have been able to enjoy your shows in Spain twice, both of them at Fabrik, being one of them a live version of your show ‘Psychodelic’. What do you think about the Spanish hardstyle scene? Do you feel the love of the public in our country every time you visit us?
SZP – Spanish crowds are always full of energy so that’s why we absolutely love playing in Spain. We recently did our ‘Psychodelic’ show at Fabrik in Madrid and the vibe was crazy. We got some more Spanish shows coming up this year, so we can’t wait for those as well!
