Devin Wild lleva tiempo siendo uno de los artistas más infravalorados de la escena. Tras haberse producido un cambio en su sonido, con unos kicks más ácidos y reminiscencias del hard techno, nos encontramos con uno de los productores con el techo más alto en el mundo hard. Y hoy está con nosotros en Wololo Sound para charlar un rato sobre sus últimos proyectos, futuros lanzamientos, su visión de la escena ¡y mucho más!
Wololo Sound – ¡Hola Dion! Es un placer para nosotros tenerte en nuestro medio. Primero de todo, me gustaría preguntarte sobre tus comienzos. Comenzaste tu carrera muy joven lanzando euphoric hardstyle en un sello gigante como es Scantraxx (en el cual aún sueles sacar tu música nueva). ¿Qué significó para ti tener el apoyo de una discográfica tan grande ya desde tus primeros pasos en el hardstyle? ¿Cómo gestionaste la presión de ser famoso a una edad tan temprana?
Devin Wild – Cuando empecé a hacer música no era consciente de cómo funcionaba la industria musical. Yo a esa edad no hacía más que ver vídeos de música en YouTube. Ver vídeos de eventos reales con este tipo de música sonando me hizo darme cuenta de que esto era algo grande. Durante los años me fui desarrollando y creciendo más y más dentro del género y comencé a tener más ambiciones respecto a sacar música en discográficas. Así que que Scantraxx me fichase fue algo surrealista en aquel momento. Un verdadero sueño hecho realidad. Convertirme en DJ nunca fue algo a lo que aspiraba antes de empezar a sacar música, así que esto fue algo que realmente nació en mí por lo que todo eso de “volverme alguien famoso” no fue algo de lo que fuera realmente consciente.
Wololo Sound – Hello Dion! It’s a pleasure for us to have you in our media. First of all, I would like to ask you about your beginnings. You started your career very young releasing euphoric hardstyle on a huge label like Scantraxx (in which you still usually release your new music). What did it mean for you to have the support of a giant label already from your first steps in hardstyle? How did you deal with the pressure of becoming famous at such a young age?
Devin Wild – When I started making music I was not aware of the whole music industry. For me at that age it was nothing more than just music videos on YouTube. Seeing videos of actual events with this kind of music being played made me realize this was something big. Through the years I was developing and growing more into the genre and I started to get more ambitions to release music on record labels. So getting signed by Scantraxx was something unreal at that moment. A real dream came true. Becoming a DJ was never something I aspired to before I started releasing. So this was something that I really grew in to so that whole “getting famous” thing was never something I was aware of either.
WS – Durante los últimos años, tu música se ha vuelto más dura hasta ser lo que produces y lanzas hoy en día. ¿Cuál ha sido tu camino desde el euphoric hasta lo que haces ahora? ¿Cómo describirías los kicks y la música de Devin Wild?
DW – La música siempre ha sido algo que ha crecido conmigo. Empecé de pequeño, tuve una gran evolución también como persona. Esto tuvo mucho que ver con mis gustos, mis elecciones y mi visión de la vida en general (la cual no tenía realmente de niño). Así que, con los años, mi idea de ser un artista realmente va cambiando. Para mí la música es más que una traducción de lo que pienso y cómo me siento, de expresar mis opiniones y mis creencias personales. Pienso que mi música se puede describir como: abstracta, a veces profunda, musical, temática y capaz de crear ambiente, pero intentando que sea enérgica y contundente.
WS – Over the last few years your music has become harder into what you produce and release today. What has been your path from euphoric to what you do today? How would you describe how Devin Wild’s kicks and music are like?
DW – Music has always been something that grew with me. I started as a young kid, I made a huge development as a person also. This did a lot with my taste, choices and overall vision in life (which I didn’t really have as a young kid). So through the years my idea of being an artist really changes. For me music is more of a translation of how I think and how I feel, expressing my opinions and personal beliefs. I think you can describe my music as: abstract, sometimes deep, musical, thematic and vibey but still try to keep it energetic and punchy.
WS – Si escuchamos tus últimos lanzamientos, nos damos cuenta de que existen ciertas reminiscencias al hard techno en tus temas. ¿Qué te inspira y te influencia a la hora de hacer música? ¿Crees que veremos más de esta fusión entre el techno y el hardstyle en la escena?
DW – Un género puede llegar a ser muy repetitivo ya que siempre existen los mismos elementos que definen ese mismo género, lo cual es totalmente aceptable y normal, pero para mí usar diferentes influencias lo convierte en un reto y en una forma de actualizarme. Espero que la gente siga intentando traer siempre nuevos ingredientes a este género. Esa es la única forma de que las cosas progresen.
WS – Listening to your latest releases we notice that there are certain reminiscences of hard techno in your tracks. What inspires and influences you to make your music? Do you think we will see more and more of this fusion between techno and hardstyle in the scene?
DW – A genre could be really repetitive since there are always the same elements that make a genre a genre, which is totally fine and normal but for me using different influences keeps it challenging and refreshing. I hope people will always try to bring new flavours into the genre. This is the only way things develop.
WS – El año pasado lanzaste ‘Exhale’, un EP formado por 4 canciones, el cual es la continuación de ‘ACID’, tu EP anterior. ¿Qué quieres intentar reflejar en estos proyectos? ¿Tienes planeado continuar este concepto en el futuro?
DW – Tengo planeado hacer estos EP’s cada año. Para mí estos proyectos son una gran oportunidad de darlo todo creativamente, tratando de explorar mi horizonte y probar cosas nuevas, lo cual no haría en un lanzamiento de un single “normal”, tal vez.
WS – Last year you released ‘Exhale’, an EP consisting of 4 songs, which is the continuation of ‘ACID’, your previous EP. What do you try to reflect in these projects? Do you plan to continue this concept in the future?
DW – I am planning to do these EP’s every year. For me these projects are a great opportunity to go all out creatively, trying to explore my creative horizon and trying new things which I maybe wouldn’t do with a “regular” single release.
WS – En 2022 trabajaste con Sub Zero Project en ‘Trinity Till Infinity’. Esta fue vuestra tercera colaboración, tras ‘Meltdown’ y el remix de ‘Feel My Love’. Parece que tenéis una gran química en el estudio, y ahora vais a trasladarla a los escenarios, ya que compartiréis el RED Stage en la próxima edición del Defqon.1 en un esperadísimo B2B. ¿Qué esperas de este set? ¿Tenéis en mente algo especial?
DW – Esos chicos son grandes amigos míos desde hace años así que, ¡no espero otra cosa que no sea divertirme! Pincharé nueva música mía, por supuesto, ¡pero también estamos planeando una nueva collab para el Defqon.1!
WS – In 2022 you worked with Sub Zero Project on ‘Trinity Till Infinity’. This was your third collaboration, after ‘Meltdown’ and the remix of ‘Feel My Love’. You seem to have a great chemistry in the studio, and now you are going to move it to the stage, as you will share the RED Stage at the next edition of Defqon.1 in a highly anticipated B2B. What do you expect from this set? Do you have something special planned for it?
DW – Those guys are very close friends for years now so I expect nothing less than fun! I will of course play new music from myself but we are also planning to do a new collab for Defqon.1!
WS – Siguiendo con tus actuaciones en directo, el año pasado estuviste realizando tu show “The_Innergame” en diversos festivales y eventos. Acabas de estrenar en el APEX la nueva y mejorada versión de tu show, llamada “The_Innergame: MINDTRAVEL”. ¿Puedes contarnos cuál es la diferencia entre esta actuación especial y un set normal de Devin Wild? ¿Cómo ha mejorado MINDTRAVEL los shows que realizabas en 2022?
DW – Lo primero, el mayor de los cambios es la temática en sí misma. Nuevo look y nuevas vibras, nuevo outfit pero también un enfoque musical ligeramente distinto. Como siempre me gusta evolucionar, quería probar nuevos equilibrios en mis sets. Con MINDTRAVEL, la atmósfera es menos “oscura” y “vibrante” en comparación con el primer Innergame. Siempre trataré de mantener la identidad de “The_Innergame”, pero a veces con algunos cambios en algunos aspectos.
WS – Continuing with your live performances, during the last year you have been performing your show “The_Innergame” at different festivals and events. You have just premiered a revamped version of your show, called “The_Innergame: MINDTRAVEL” at APEX. Can you tell us what is the difference between this special show and a normal Devin Wild set? How has MINDTRAVEL improved on the show you played in 2022?
DW – First of all the biggest change is the theme itself. New look and feel, new outfit but also a slightly different approach music-wise. Since I always try to evolve I would like to try some different balances in the set. With MINDTRAVEL the overall atmosphere is less “dark” and “vibey” compared to the first Innergame. I will always try to keep the identity of “The_Innergame” but sometimes with some small adjustments here and there.
WS – El año pasado hiciste tu debut en el Qlimax con un set de sólo 15 minutos, siendo uno de los DJ’s sorpresa del evento. ¿Qué pensaste cuando Q-Dance te habló de la idea de actuar por sorpresa? ¿Tienes ganas de volver al Gelredome, pero esta vez para pinchar un set completo?
DW – Qlimax fue una experiencia de otro mundo. Siempre ha sido un sueño formar parte de él. Ya fui uno de los Shadow Priests en Qlimax “Distorted Reality” el año anterior, así que pude probar un poco lo que se siente, pero actuar en el Gelredome fue, por supuesto, algo completamente distinto. ¡Sería increíble pinchar un set completo, claro!
WS – Last year you made your debut at Qlimax with a set of only 15 minutes, being one of the surprise DJ’s of the event. What did you think when Q-Dance informed you about the idea of playing by surprise? Are you looking forward to return to the Gelredome, but this time to perform a full set?
DW – Qlimax was an out of this world experience. It has always been a dream to be a part of it. I already was a part of the Shadow Priests on Qlimax “Distorted Reality” the year before, so I was able to already have a little taste of it but playing in the actual Gelredome was of course something really different! It would be crazy to do a full set for sure!
WS – En este set pinchaste ‘No Resistance’, tu última canción, lanzada en Q-Dance Records en el contexto del festival. ¿Hiciste el tema a propósito para el Qlimax? ¿Cuál fue el proceso creativo del track?
DW – Sí, hice la canción especialmente para el Qlimax. Q-Dance me hizo una presentación por encima para darme unas pinceladas sobre la temática del año pasado. Comencé creando una atmósfera que reflejase cómo entiendo yo que es el Qlimax, con esos elementos en mente. La temática principal era sobre el magnetismo así que traté de la mejor manera posible añadir esas referencias en la canción. Lindi hizo un gran trabajo con las vocales también, las cuales hicieron que el tema quedase completo. ¡Así que un aplauso para ella!
WS – In this set you played ‘No Resistance’, your latest track, released on Q-Dance Records in the context of the festival. Did you make the song on purpose for Qlimax? What was the creative process of the track?
DW – Yes, I made this song especially for Qlimax. Q-Dance gave me a small presentation to give an impression of that year’s theme. I started off creating an atmosphere that reflected how Qlimax feels to me with those elements in mind. The main theme was about magnetism so I tried to put these references in the track as much as possible. Lindi also did a great job on the vocal which made this track complete. So big up to her!
WS – Has comenzado fuerte el año con tu primer lanzamiento, pero nos gustaría escuchar qué está por venir. ¿Saldrá alguna colaboración importante en el futuro próximo? ¿Lanzarás un nuevo álbum o EP este año?
DW – Definitivamente haré un nuevo EP este año, así que eso es algo que podéis esperar. Hay algunas collabs chulas planeadas y en proceso, pero las quiero mantener como sorpresa. Pero sin duda una canción con Sub Zero Project se vendrá 🙂
WS – You’re off to a strong start of the year with your first release, but we’d like to hear about what’s to come. Do you have any major collaborations coming up in the near future? Will you be releasing a new album or EP this year?
DW – I will definitely do a new EP this year so that’s one you can already expect. There are some pretty cool collabs planned and in the making which I still want to keep as a surprise. But a new song with Sub Zero Project is one to expect for sure 🙂
