Con una larga trayectoria profesional, está en uno de sus mejores momentos y acaba de lanzar su nuevo tema ‘Acid Mind‘. Hablamos con la diva portuguesa del techno sobre sus lanzamientos, sueños, metas…

Wololo Sound –¡Hola Sheila! Estamos encantados de tenerte en nuestros medios. Hoy en día eres, sin duda, una auténtica diva del techno en Portugal. ¿Cuál ha sido tu camino hasta llegar donde estás hoy?
Miss Sheila – Ha sido un largo camino lleno de duro trabajo, algunos momentos difíciles, pero muchos otros maravillosos. Estoy muy contenta de estar donde estoy y aún más de ver que la música ya no se considera un mundo de hombres.
Wololo Sound – Hello Sheila! We are very delighted to have you in our media. Nowadays you are, without any doubt, a real diva of techno in Portugal. What has been your path to where you are today?
Miss Sheila – It’s been a long path full of hard work some tough times but a lot more of great ones! I’m very happy to be where I am today and even more to see that djing is no longer considered a mans world!
WS – ¿Darías algún consejo a los productores que empiezan a hacer techno hoy en día?
MS – Supongo que el único consejo que daría es que se mantengan fieles a un estilo y no se limiten a seguir simples modas.
WS – Would you give any advice to the producers who are starting to make techno nowadays?
MS – I guess the only advice I would give is stay faithful to a style and don’t just follow the band wagon.
WS – ¿Cuáles han sido las principales dificultades que has encontrado en la industria musical?
MS – Sobre todo en la época en la que no se tomaba en serio a las mujeres, como he mencionado antes, pero lo que no ha cambiado son los grupos de presión, por desgracia no todo se basa en el talento, sino en a quién conoces.
WS – What have been the main difficulties you have encountered in the music industry?
MS – Mostly back in the day when women weren’t taken seriously as I mentioned before but the thing that hasn’t changed is the lobby’s, unfortunately it’s not all about the talent it’s about who you know.
WS – ¿Cómo es ser una mujer DJ en la escena techno?
MS – Hoy en día es lo mismo que ser hombre, se nos toma en serio y el sueldo parece por fin igual.
WS – What is it like to be a female DJ in the techno scene?
MS – Now a days it’s just the same as being a man, we are taken seriously and the pay seems finally equal.
WS – Tienes una larga carrera a tus espaldas, tanto en Portugal como en el extranjero. ¿Cuáles recuerdas como tus conciertos/festivales favoritos dentro y fuera del territorio portugués?
MS – He tenido muchos, demasiados para elegir uno en concreto, he tenido la suerte de tocar en conciertos y eventos increíbles por todas partes.
WS – You have a long career behind you, both in Portugal and abroad. What do you remember as your favourite gigs inside and outside the Portuguese territory?
MS – I’ve had many, too many to choose one specific one, I’ve been blessed to play amazing gigs and events all over.
WS – Recientemente te has unido a la agencia Cubbo Bookings, que gestiona tus giras internacionales. En los últimos meses has visitado países como Qatar, Emiratos Árabes Unidos, Suiza…. ¿Cuáles son sus lugares favoritos para tocar? ¿Crees que el público vive la música de forma diferente en cada parte del mundo?
MS – Me encanta tocar en todo el mundo, pero Portugal siempre será mi favorito, es el país en el que desarrollé mi carrera, me vio crecer y me apoyó incondicionalmente. En cuanto al público, creo que una fiesta es una fiesta en cualquier parte del mundo.
You have recently joined the Cubbo Bookings agency, which manages your international tours. In the last months you have visited countries like Qatar, United Arab Emirates, Switzerland…. What are your favourite places to play? Do you feel that the public experience music in a different way in each part of the world?
MS – I love playing all around the world but Portugal will always be my favorite, it’s the country that made my career saw me grow and stood by me unconditionally. As public goes I think a party is a party any where around the world!
WS – Hablemos de su música. Desde hace varios años tienes el sello Digital Waves, donde publicas gran parte de tu música. ¿Por qué decidiste lanzar un sello discográfico? ¿Qué ventajas te ofrece a la hora de publicar tu música?
MS – Siempre quise tener un sello propio en el que pudiera lanzar mi propia música y la de otros talentos. Es estupendo tener nuestro propio sello porque podemos lanzar nuestra música como nos plazca y cuando nos plazca, sin tener que pasar por el proceso de esperar respuestas, a veces durante meses, de otros sellos.
WS– Let’s talk about your music. For several years now you have owned the label Digital Waves, where you release a lot of your music. Why did you decide to launch a record label? What advantages does it give you when it comes to releasing your music?
MS – I always wanted a label I could call my own where I could launch my own music and other talents music as well. Its great to have our own label because we can launch our music as we please when we please and not have to go through the process of waiting for responses sometimes for months from other labels.
WS – Tu último single, ‘Acid Mind‘, se publicó en Digital Waves. ¿Cuál ha sido el proceso creativo de este tema? ¿Qué mensaje quieres transmitir a tu público?
MS – Bueno, normalmente empiezo definiendo exactamente hacia dónde quiero que se dirija el tema, después empiezo a trastear con los ritmos y las líneas de la base hasta que consigo el groove perfecto, luego vienen los sintetizadores e intento que encajen a la perfección con los ritmos. Una vez que todo está unido, busco el gancho o incluso mejor, la guinda del pastel. Con ‘Acid Mind‘, me centré en hacer un tema techno con un toque ácido y funcionó utilizando un gancho ácido que personalmente me encantaba.
WS– Your latest single ‘Acid Mind’ was released on Digital Waves. What was the creative process behind the track? What message do you want to transmit to your audience?
MS – Well I normally start by defining exactly where I want the track to head , after that I begin to mess around with beats and baselines until I get the perfect groove, then come the synths where I try to fit them seamlessly to the beats. Once all is put together I look for the hook or even better the cherry on top! With Acid mind the focus was in making a techno track with an acid vibe and that worked by using an acid hook that I personally loved!
WS – Suponemos que tienes muchos lanzamientos por delante. ¿Qué puedes decirnos de ellos? ¿Hay alguna colaboración que podamos esperar en los próximos meses? ¿Alguna pista sobre fechas de lanzamiento?
MS – Bueno, aún no tengo fecha de lanzamiento, pero acabo de firmar con el renombrado sello Reload mi próximo EP llamado ‘Suck my Noise‘.
WS– We suppose you have a lot of releases coming up. What can you tell us about them? Are there any collaborations we can expect in the coming months? Any clues about release dates?
MS – Well I don’t have a release date yet but I have just recently signed with the renown label Reload my next EP called ‘Suck my Noise‘.
WS – Nos gustaría ir un poco más allá y preguntarte por algunas cosas de la vida de los DJ, pero que a menudo pasan desapercibidas para el público. ¿Cómo llevas la presión de tener que sacar música tan a menudo y al mismo tiempo, estar de gira por todo el mundo casi todos los fines de semana?
MS – Bueno, hago lo que puedo. A veces no es posible mantener la consistencia de lanzar música todo el tiempo, pero cuando tengo la oportunidad de volver al estudio intento compensarlo haciendo un par de temas.
WS – We’d like to go a bit further and ask you about some things about DJ’s life, but that often go unnoticed by the public. How do you deal with the pressure of having to release music so often and at the same time being on tour all over the world almost every weekend?
MS – Well I do what I can! Sometimes it’s just not possible to keep the consistency of launching music all the time but when I do get the chance to step back in to the studio I try and make up for it by makings a couple of tracks.
WS – ¿Alguna vez sientes que necesitas parar un poco? ¿Cómo compaginas la vida profesional con la personal, los conciertos/las giras con el descanso?
MS – Relajarme es cosa del pasado ahora que tengo un niño pequeño, pero de algún modo consigo equilibrarlo todo con la ayuda de mis seres queridos.
WS – Do you ever feel you need to stop for a while? How do you balance professional vs personal life, gigs/touring vs relaxing?
MS – Relaxing is a thing from the past now that I have a toddler but some how I manage to balance everything with help of my loved ones.
WS – ¿Cuál crees que ha sido el mayor logro de su carrera hasta la fecha? ¿Algún festival/evento pendiente del que le gustaría formar parte del cartel?
MS – Para mí, mi mayor logro es seguir siendo considerada una de las mejores DJ de mi país después de 20 años. En cuanto a festivales, todavía tengo muchos lugares a los que quiero ir, pero en cuanto a line ups, ya he tenido el privilegio de tocar junto a los mejores DJs y que más admiro.
WS – What do you think has been the greatest achievement of your career so far? Any pending festival/event you would like to be part of the line-up of?
MS – For me my greatest achievement is to still be considered one of the top DJ’s in my country after 20 years it’s a true accomplishment. As far as festivals go yes I still have many places I want to go but as far as line ups go I already had the privilege of playing along side the tops DJ’s I admire.
WS – Por otro lado, ¿qué sueños y objetivos te quedan por alcanzar? ¿Qué te inspira y motiva para producir nuevas canciones? ¿Cómo encuentras la inspiración?
MS – Me inspiro y me motivo en mis actuaciones. Como DJ, me inspiro constantemente en lo qué la pista de baile transmite.
WS – On the other hand, what dreams and goals do you still have to achieve? What inspires you and motivates you to produce new songs? How do you find inspiration?
MS – I find my inspiration and motivation at my gigs, as a dj Im constantly being inspired with the dance floor.
WS – ¿Tienes ganas de visitar pronto nuestro país? ¿Qué destacarías del público español?
MS – Si claro, para mí la gente española es una verdadera fiesta y eso me encanta. ¡¿A quién no?!
WS – Are you looking forward to visiting our country soon? What would you highlight about the Spanish public?
MS – Yes of course, well to me the Spanish crowd is a true fiesta crowd and I love that!! Who doesn’t?!
WS – Y por último… ¿algún mensaje que quieras enviar a tu público?
MS – ¡Sí! ¡Gracias por el cariño!
