Hoy es lunes de nueva entrevista, y como sabemos que llevábamos mucho tiempo sin traeros algo de STMPD RCRDS y muchos sois fans de la música que lanzan, volvemos a colaborar con el sello de Martin Garrix para traeros a uno de los artistas insignia del label. Julian Jordan vuelve a pasarse por Wololo Sound tras casi tres años de su primera entrevista para ver como ha evolucionado tanto personal como musicalmente con una pandemia de por medio, la gran comunidad que está creando con sus fans, su último tema ‘Thunder’ y por supuesto esa colaboración tan increíble que fue ‘Diamonds’ junto a su gran amigo Martin Garrix y Tinie Tempah.
Tuvimos el placer de charlar con él a través de Zoom y aquí tenéis el resultado. Esperamos que os guste tanto como a nosotros haber realizado esta entrevista con el neerlandés. Y como no hay dos sin tres, seguro que Julian volverá en unos años a hablar con nosotros, nos lo ha prometido al final de la entrevista. Julian Jordan: ¡Muchas gracias! Sí, ha pasado mucho tiempo pero estoy feliz de veros de nuevo. Esta vez a través de Zoom pero igual de feliz. La próxima vez será en persona, es la progresión correcta jajaja.
Wololo Sound: Hi Julian! It is nice to have you back in Wololo Sound after two years.
Julian Jordan: Thank you so much! Yeah, it’s been a long time but I’m happy to see you guys again. This time through Zoom but still happy to see you guys. Next time will be in person, that’s the right progression hahaha.
WS: La última vez que hablamos fue en febrero de 2019, y por culpa de la pandemia que hemos vivido parece que ha pasado una eternidad. Esa vez como primera pregunta te pedimos que te describieras brevemente: ¿Qué dirías que ha cambiado del Julian de ese momento, al Julian de la actualidad?
JJ: Durante la pandemia he cambiado un poco mi visión como persona. Antes solo estaba de tour alrededor del mundo solo pensando en el trabajo, estaba en un huracán y todo estaba ocurriendo alrededor de mí. Solo estaba enfocado en mis tours y crear música, vivir el día a día. Estaba actuando en un show pero ya pensando en el siguiente, y cuando llegaba a este ya pensaba en el próximo. Nunca he tenido tiempo para apartarme y disfrutar del momento, siempre estaba mirando más allá en vez de mirar atrás para ver lo que he hecho.
Asi que cuando la pandemia ocurrió me vi forzado a sentarme en casa. Tuve tiempo para mirar atrás en mi carrera para ver todo lo que he hecho hasta ahora y me siento muy afortunado de ello, esto es una de las cosas positivas que me llevo de la pandemia. También vi cómo de importante son las amistades y la familia; en la primera semana de la pandemia en Holanda hubo un confinamiento muy estricto, no pudimos ir a ver a los amigos y a la familia y fue muy duro porque sientes como de importante es el contacto social. Y también con las fiestas, los festivales, los clubs, es muy importante conocer a gente y dejar ir tus problemas diarios algunas veces.
Verdaderamente tengo esa visión ahora msimo y me siento conectado con el público incluso más porque he tenido lo mismo que todos los demás, estábamos en el mismo barco, todos sentados en casa cuando queríamos salir e ir a fiestas. He cambiado desde aquel Julian Jordan en ese punto de vista y me siento muy feliz por ello. La otra parte que ha conllevado la enfermedad por supuesto es terrible, pero esto feliz que la pandemia me haya cambiado un poquito más y haya hecho que piense en como de afortunado soy de ver a mi familia y amigos, y disfrutar el momento en vez de darle vueltas a las cosas.
WS: Last time we talked was in February 2019, and because of the pandemic it seemed like an eternity. Back then we asked you to describe yourself briefly: what would you say that has changed since that Julian until your current self?
JJ: During the pandemic I change a little bit my view as a human. Before I was just touring around the world only thinking about work, I was in a hurricane and everything was happening around me. I was only focused on touring and making music, living day by day. I was playing a show but I already thought about the next show, and then I had the next show and I was thinking on the next one. I never really got time to sit back and enjoy the moment, I was always looking further and further instead of looking back to what I already did.
So when the pandemic happened and I was forced to sit at home. I had the time to look back on my career on what I did already and feel very blessed about that so that’s a positive thing about it. Also, I saw how important friendship and family are; in the first week of the pandemic in Holland there was a really strict lockdown, we couldn’t go to see friends and family and it was really hard because you feel how important social contact is. And also with parties and festivals, clubs, it’s so important to meet people and to let go of your everyday struggles sometimes.
I really see that right now and I really feel connected with the crowd even more because I had the same thing that everyone else, we were all on the same boat, we were all sitting at home when we wanted to go out and we wanted to go to parties. So I changed myself on that point of view and I’m really happy about that part. The other part about the whole disease of course is terrible, but I’m happy it changed me a little bit more and made me more think about how blessed I am to see my family and friends, and enjoy the moment instead of thinking more and more.
WS: Has firmado un 2021 sobresaliente y con una gran cantidad de nueva música. ¿Cuál es el track que has hecho que te tenga más obsesionado? (Rollo wow, este track es que es un banger de manual).
JJ: ¡Es una buena pregunta! La primera vez que he tenido este sentimiento fue antes mientras estaba girando antes de la pandemia, fue con ‘Oldskool’. Cuando hice este track fue un momento donde pensé okay, he encontrado mi nuevo estilo, algo en lo que quiero profundizar, y ‘Oldskool’ fue el track que para mi representa realmente mi propio estilo, este es el típico sonido de Julian Jordan, años intentando distintos géneros, haciendo distintos estilos e intentando encontrarlo. Puse todo eso junto e hice un track que lo incluía, y eso fue ‘Oldskool’.
Encontré los ingredientes que tengo que usar para hacer un track con mi sonido característico, y después de eso, ha sido un viaje salvaje. Muchas producciones, realmente sentí esa chispa otra vez en el estudio que tienes a veces y dices “okay, estoy en una buena racha produciendo”. He trabajado muy duro pero se siente bien, no lo siento como trabajar, se siente como que me lo paso muy divertido creando bangers por los cuales pierdo la cabeza cuando los escucho por primera vez. Asi que siempre intento ponerme en la perspectiva del público cuando escuchan la canción por primera vez, por lo que estoy muy feliz de encontrar esto.
WS: You have had an outstanding 2021 with a huge amount of new music. What track got you more obsessed? The one that made you think “wow, this is a banger!”
JJ: It’s a good one! When I had that feeling for the first time while I was still touring before the pandemic, it was with ‘Oldskool’. When I made that one it was really a moment when I thought okay, I’ve found my new style, something I want to go deeper in, and ‘Oldskool’ was the track for me that really represents my own style, this is the typical Julian Jordan sound, it’s like years of trying different genres, trying different styles, and all those years of trying it. I really put all of this together and made a track with everything included, and that was ‘Oldskool’.
I found the ingredients I have to use to make a track with my signature sound, and after that, it’s been a wild ride. A lot of productions, I really felt that sparkle again in the studio that you have sometimes and you be like “okay, I’m on a roll productively”. I’ve been working my ass off but it feels good, it doesn’t feel like working, it feels like I’m having so much fun making bangers that I would like to lose my mind too when I hear them for the first time. So I always try to look in the perspective of the crowd when they hear the track for the first time, so I’m very happy of founding this.
WS: Uno de tus temas más especiales para ti este año es el remake que hiciste al ‘Shout’ de Tears For Fears. ¿Cuánta importancia tiene para ti tanto este track, como la influencia de la música de los 80?
JJ: Amo la música de los 80. He sido un gran fan de la música de los 80 incluso habiendo nacido en 1995 por lo que nunca estuve en esa época. Pero siento que esos temas que siempre escuché en el coche cuando era un crío, en la radio cuando estaba en el coche con mi padre el solía poner todos estos temas y recuerdo ‘Shout’ de Tears For Fears. Recuerdo escuchar esa canción en la radio de pequeño y con esta edad, 26, la escuché de nuevo y fue como que es uno de estos temas por los que te sientes nostálgico inmediatamente. Aunque no estuvieras en ese momento, te sientes nostálgico, sientes que eres parte de la canción y que está escrita para ti, a veces tienes ese sentimiento con estos tracks antiguos.
Asi que tenía que hacer algo con esto y Teo Mandrelli, un buen amigo mío que también es DJ y productor, hizo las vocales con Jordan Grace y me las envió. Literalmente un mes después de estar pensando en hacer algo con esta canción me enviaron la demo con la acapella, fue una coincidencia muy loca. Yo estaba como “por supuesto, vamos a colaborar” y creo que creamos el tema en una sesión de face time juntos, fue muy divertido. Es uno de esos tracks de los que estoy muy orgulloso, y en vez de hacer una especie de remix con sonidos estúpidos, intentamos mantenerlo lo más auténtico posible con instrumentos reales, es una locura.
WS: One of your most special tracks for you this year was your remake for ‘Shout’ by Tears For Fears. How important is this track for you as well as the 80s music influence?
JJ: I love 80’s music, I’ve been a huge fan of 80’s music even though I was born in 1995 so I never was there during the 80’s. But I felt like those tracks I always heard them in the car when I was a young kid, on the radio when I was in the car with my dad he used to play all those tracks and I remember ‘Shout’ of Tears For Fears. I remember hearing that song on the radio as a kid and when I was like this age, 26, I heard it again and I was like this is one of those tracks that immediately feels nostalgic. Even though you were not there at the moment, you feel nostalgic, it feels like you’re part of the song and it’s written for you, sometimes you have that with these old tracks.
So I had to do something with this and Teo Mandrelli, a good friend of mine DJ/producer as well, made the vocals with Jordan Grace and he sent the vocals to me. Literally, a month later they sent me the demo with the acapella and I was thinking about doing something with this track, this is a crazy coincidence. I was like “sure, let’s collab” and I think we made the track on a face time session together, it was really fun. It’s one of those tracks that I’m really proud of as well, and instead of doing like a remix with stupid sounds, we tried to keep that authentic feel as well with real instruments, it’s really crazy.
WS: Hablemos de ‘Diamonds’, una de las últimas bombas que ha salido por STMPD creada por ti y tu gran amigo Martin Garrix junto a Tinie Tempah. ¿Cómo ha sido el proceso de creación de esta collab?
JJ: Fue divertido, un viaje realmente divertido. Hice la primera demo del track y era súper oscura casi como techno, y recuerdo estar con Martijn en el estudio y enseñarle la demo. El fue como okay, y si pruebas a hacer esto, esto y esto otro, y de repente ya estábamos trabajando juntos en el drop y nació la primera demo real de ‘Diamonds’, era como una explosión en directo, uno de esos temas que a veces solo funciona con un público realmente grande. Estábamos pensando “okay, si soltamos esto en Tomorrowland o Ultra, el público se volvería literalmente loco” y esa era la mentalidad que tuvimos constantemente con el drop, tenía que ser enorme.
Me fui a casa tras la sesión y recuerdo estár andando de vuelta con mi novia por Ámsterdam y Martijn me llamó de repente diciéndome “tío, qué pasa si ponemos a Tinie en el tema?” Yo dije que sí por supuesto, por qué no, era súper genial además me esneñó un verso de Tinie en el track y encajaba de locos, así que dije okay, vamos a trabajar. Volví a su casa, trabajamos toda la noche en el tema y unas semanas después trajimos a Tinie a Ámsterdam.
Tuvimos un tiempo muy agradable con él, la sesión fue genial y su escritura es legendaria. Así que los tres escribimos la canción, Tinie aportó también ideas a la producción, fueron sesiones muy guays. Creo que lo lanzamos justo antes del ADE y la respuesta fue increíble, recuerdo la primera vez que la pinché en directo que fue en el ADE y todo el público la canto al unísono, es una locura. Estoy muy orgulloso de este tema.
WS: Let’s talk about ‘Diamonds’, one of the latest bombs that STMPD has dropped created by you and your long-time friend Martin Garrix alongside Tinie Tempah. How was the production process for this collaboration?
JJ: It was fun, it was a really fun journey. I made a track like the first demo and it was super dark almost like techno, and I remember I was with Martijn at the studio and I showed him the demo. He was like alright, if you try to do this, this and this and then we were just working together at the drop and then like the first real demo of ‘Diamonds’ was born and it was just like that live explosion like you have those tracks sometimes that only would work for a big crowd. We were like “okay if we drop this at Tomorrowland or we drop this at Ultra, the crowd would go literally insane” and that was the mindset we constantly had with the drop, it has to be huge.
So I went home after the session and I remember I was walking back home with my girlfriend in Amsterdam and Martijn called me all of a sudden and he said like “yo, what if we put Tinie on the track?” And I was like yes of course, why not, it’s super dope and he showed me a verse from Tinie on the track and it fitted so crazy was like insane, so I was like okay, let’s work it out. So I went back to his home, we worked all night on the track and a few weeks later we flew in Tinie to Amsterdam.
We had a really good time with him, really great session his writing is legendary. So all three of us wrote the track, Tinie put some ideas on the production as well, there were really cool sessions. And then, I think just before ADE we released it and the response was amazing, I remember the first time I played on live was at the ADE and everyone, all the crowd sing along with it, it’s crazy. I’m so proud of that track.
WS: Hace poco hemos podido disfrutar del regreso de ADE tras la pandemia, e incluso te hemos visto haciendo un meet & greet espontáneo con tus fans. ¿Ha sido muy diferente esta edición respecto a años anteriores debido a las restricciones y a la falta de conferencias?
JJ: Sí que lo ha sido, muy diferente para ser honesto. Los clubes tuvieron que cerrar a medianoche por lo que no fue un ADE normal, muchos eventos no ocurrieron. Había muchos eventos pero más enfocados al techno, con más DJs locales algo que es súper bueno para ellos por supuesto. Pero no fue realmente un ADE internacional este año porque muchos promotores no vinieron, así que espero que el próximo año las normas sean mejores y podamos únicamente estar de fiesta toda la noche y tener a todos los promotores viniendo esperemos.
Personalmente, para mí fue una buena edición. Creo que hice algo bueno, también la reunión con los fans fue muy divertida y estoy feliz con los shows que hice. Estoy feliz con todo lo que ocurrió, la gente que vi, solo espero que las restricciones desaparezcan el próximo año y venga más gente.
WS: Not long ago we were able to enjoy ADE’s return after the pandemic, and we have even seen you doing a spontaneous meet & greet for your fans. Has this edition been much different compared to other years due to restrictions and the lack of conferences?
JJ: Yeah, it did, it was super different to be honest. The clubs had to close at midnight so it wasn’t like a normal ADE, a lot of events didn’t happen. There were a lot of events but they were more like techno, with more local DJs which is super good for them of course. But it wasn’t really an international ADE this year because a lot of promoters didn’t come, so I hope next year the rules are better and we can just party all night long and have all the promoters coming over, so let’s hope that.
Personally, for me it was a good edition. I think I did enough good stuff, also the fan meeting was really fun and I’m happy with the shows I did. I’m happy with everything that happened there, the people I saw, just let’s hope the restrictions are done next year and we have more people coming.
WS: Ya desde antes de este verano, y sobre todo durante el mismo, hemos podido volver a ver afortunadamente eventos en directo como antes del COVID. ¿Qué tal has vivido la vuelta a los shows presenciales y a actuar de nuevo frente a miles de espectadores?
JJ: Recuerdo que el primer show que hice fue en Polonia, fue la primera actuación en prácticamente dos años. Fue una locura, recuerdo que estaba muy nervioso por la actuación, nunca he estado tan nervioso pero irónicamente nunca había estado tan bien preparado porque tuve dos años para prepararlo, pero fue increíble. Recuerdo que sentí el mejor sentimiento del mundo, pura alegría y felicidad. Estaba súper feliz con ello y el sentimiento es indescriptible, algo fuera de este mundo porque has echado de menos algo durante dos años y finalmente puedes hacerlo de nuevo.
Para mí es el mejor sentimiento del mundo, es como tener tu batería y se carga cuando sientes la energía del público, y cuando no la sientes la batería se vacía, y la mía estaba súper vacía después de dos años, pero con esta actuación se cargó completamente de nuevo, fue como si me pusieran un cargador en el culo jajaja.
WS: Already before summer and during it, we have seen the return of live events as before the pandemic. How have you lived the return of live shows and acting in front of thousands of people again?
JJ: I remember the first show I did was in Poland, it was the first show ever again after two years almost. It was crazy, I remember I was really nervous again for the show, I was never that nervous but ironically so well prepared because I had two years to prepare, but it was insane. I remember I felt the best feeling in the world, pure joy and happiness. I was so so super happy with it and the feeling I just couldn’t describe it, it’s something out of this world because you’ve been missing something for two years and you can finally do it again.
For me it’s the best feeling in the world, it’s like you have your battery and it gets charged when you feel that crowd energy, and when you don’t feel the crowd energy the battery gets empty, and after two years mine was like super empty, but with that show it was fully charged again, it was like they put me a charger on my ass hahaha.
WS: Este año has quedado en la posición 66 del Top 100 de DJ Mag, escalando 27 posiciones en únicamente 2 años. Lo primero de todo, ¡enhorabuena! Y lo segundo ahondando más en el por qué, ¿qué parte de tu trabajo dirías que ha tenido más importancia en esta tendencia al alza?
JJ: Siempre me preocupo de mis estadísticas y creo que estos últimos años he invertido en crear una conexión con los fans, porque para mí era muy importante conectar con ellos a un nivel más personal. Hice una serie en Youtube la cual sigo haciendo, tengo mi canal de Discord donde conecto con mis fans inmediatamente. Me gusta hacer muchas cosas por mis fans, incluso he tenido un viernes súper fan en noviembre que fue algo especial cada viernes de ese mes donde daba algo a mis fans y cada semana se volvía más loco.
Pero creo que eso es importante porque siento que estoy construyendo un escuadrón de personas que se sienten más una familia que se apoya y escucha los unos a los otros. Eso fue lo que hice la mayor parte de mi tiempo el pasado año, crear realmente un movimiento y no pensar únicamente en mi propia carrera, esto me ha ayudado a crecer creo.
WS: This year you are sitting in 66th place of the DJMAG Top 100, going up 27 positions in just two years. First of all, congratulations! And secondly and getting deeper into it, what part of your job do you think had the biggest impact on this rising?
JJ: I’m always looking into my own statistics and I think the last years I really invested in connection with fans, so for me was very important to connect with my fans even more on a personal level. I did a Youtube series and I still do that, I have a Discord channel right now where I connect with my fans immediately. I do like so many things for my fans, even I had a super fan Friday in November which was like a special thing that every Friday of that month I gave away something to my fans and it got crazier every week.
But I think that is so important because I feel like I’m building more like a squad of people that feels more like a family that supports and listens to each other. That’s what I did most time last year, I really built like a movement so not only think about my own career but think about the whole movement I’m building, so that really helps me to rise I think.
WS: Vamos a profundizar más en ello. ¿Piensas que una artista como tú que está más enfocado en la música electrónica más popular tiene que cuidar más de su público que un artista underground que normalmente se centra más en su música?
JJ: No creo que tengas que hacerlo, depende de lo que quieras porque es muy personal, pero siento que yo quiero conseguir esa conexión porque es debido a una experiencia personal. He formado parte de un foro de música electrónica cuando tenía quince años, era parte de esto. No tenía tantos amigos cuando era más joven pero tuve todos mis amigos en ese foro así que mi contacto fue a través de la música y es realmente importante hoy en día, especialmente ahora en el estado en el que está el mundo, donde la gente tiene un lugar para verse online porque en la vida real es casi imposible ver a gente de nuevo. Creo que es muy importante crear una comunidad online donde puedas tener amigos, eso es lo que he estado haciendo y no por mi carrera especialmente, lo hago porque de verdad lo siento.
WS: Let’s go more deeply into it. Do you think an artist like you that is more focused on mainstream electronic music has to take care more of his public than an underground music artist that usually is more focused on his music stuff?
JJ: I don’t think you have to, it depends on what you want because it’s super personal, but I feel like I want to get that connection going because it’s through personal experience. I’ve been part of an electronic music forum when I was fifteen years old, I was part of that. I didn’t have that many friends when I was younger but I had like all my friends on that forum so my contact was through music and it’s really important nowadays, especially right now in the state the world is in, where people have a place online where they could find each other because in real life it’s almost impossible to see people again. So I feel like it’s very important to build a community online where you can have friends, that’s what I’ve been doing and not especially for my career, I do it because I really feel that.
WS: Este año hemos podido ver en STMPD RCRDS tanto el álbum debut de Matt Nash, como el tan esperado álbum de AREA 21. Estás en un momento de tu carrera donde el nombre de Julian Jordan ya está muy asentado en la industria y tienes las vivencias suficientes como para hacer un trabajo a gran escala en forma de LP. ¿Está entre tus planes realizar un álbum a corto plazo o estás a gusto con tu ritmo de singles?
JJ: No me siento tan cómodo para ser honesto porque estamos pensando, y pienso como nosotros porque siempre trabajo con mi equipo de gente en STMPD RCRDS y mi mánager, y pensamos sobre esas cosas muchísimo sabes, en cuál es la manera correcta de hacer cualquier cosa. Siento que tal vez podamos hacer un EP pronto que se centre en mi propio sonido, definitivamente eso es algo que estamos planeando y pensando. Creo que es bueno para los fans para que vean que “vale, él ha sacado a la luz temas en un pequeño álbum (que es básicamente un EP)”. Así que sí, estamos trabajando en ello absolutamente.
WS: This year, we have seen Matt Nash’s debut album and the long-awaited AREA 21’s album on STMPD RCRDS. You are in a moment of your career in which your name is very established in the scene and you have all the experience to carry on a project on a bigger scale in the form of a LP. Is it among your plans to release an album on the short term or are you feeling comfortable with your singles releases?
JJ: I’m not feeling that comfortable to be honest because we’re thinking, and I thought like we because I always work with my team of people at STMPD RCRDS and my manager, and we think about these things a lot you know, what is the right way to do with anything. I feel like maybe we could do an EP soon which is focused on my own sound, so that’s definitely something we’re planning and we’re thinking about. I think it’s good for the fans also to see like “okay, he’s been putting out tracks on a small album (which is basically an EP)”. So yeah, we’re working on that absolutely.
WS: Acabó 2021 y nos tenías una última sorpresa preparada. ¿Guardas más arsenal para 2022?
JJ: Tenía una sorpresa todavía como pudisteis comprobar. ‘Thunder’ ha sido mi último lanzamiento y la respuesta del publico ha sido increíblemente loca. Creo que terminar el año con ‘Thunder’ al ser un single está guay porque hice un montón de colaboraciones el pasado año. Para 2022 tengo mucho material, pero de verdad tengo tanto material que tengo que estar seguro de que escojo porque de lo contrario es demasiado, por lo que tengo que estar seguro y dejar que la calidad se imponga.
WS: 2021 is done and you had one last surprise prepared. Are you keeping more stuff for 2022?
JJ: I had one surprise left as you’ve seen. I released my latest single ‘Thunder’ and the response of the public has been pretty insane. I think it’s cool that I ended the year with ‘Thunder’, a solo track, since I did a lot of collabs this year. For 2022 I have a lot of stuff, but really I have so much stuff that I have to be really secure what I choose because otherwise it’s too much, so I have to be really sure and let the quality take over.

- WS: ¿Algún objetivo para 2022? – JJ: Inspirar a más gente y crear una comunidad más grande de la que ya hemos hecho. Únicamente enviar más positividad al mundo.
- WS: ¿Cómo ha sido tu Spotify Wrapped del pasado año? – JJ: Ha sido un montón de hip-hop y rap. El artista que más he escuchado ha sido Drake y el tema más escuchado probablemente ha sido ‘Diamonds’. Lo he puesto muchas veces en el coche, estoy muy orgulloso de esta canción.
- WS: ¿Próxima vez que te veamos en España? – JJ: ¡Vamos a hacerlo! Creo que este verano definitivamente estaré en España. Se vienen algunas contrataciones y espero que sea muy pronto. - WS: Favourite show this year – JJ: Israel
- WS: Favourite club you have played – JJ: Hï Ibiza
- WS: Secret hobby that you enjoy a lot – JJ: Kickboxing, I do it every week 2 times with my friends. I do it for a few years and I love it, it’s fun and it’s good for my health
- WS: Favourite Spanish word – Paella
- WS: A goal for 2022? – JJ: Inspire more people and create a bigger community than we already did. Just send more positivity into the world
- WS: How has been Spotify Wrapped last year? – JJ: It has been a lot of hip-hop and rap. Artist that I’ve listened more has been Drake and the track most played probably has been ‘Diamonds’. I’ve played it a lot of times in the car, I’m so proud of this track.
- WS: Next time we’ll see you in Spain? – JJ: Let’s do it! I think this summer I will be definitely in Spain. I think there is some bookings coming up, hope to be there very soon. I can only wish and I think it’s going to happen for sure this summer. Also the best weather in Spain at that time so let’s hope.
